I had a perfectly functioning 1/2hp well pump at 245ft. The well was put in in 1984. Last year, 2023, I noticed the metal top cover was cocked. When I took it off I noted a big slug inside the well liner about a foot down. When I tried to grab it it fell into the well. Oh well, I called a well company and they sent a gentleman out and we discussed the well and the water condition. Ultimately, he suggested blowing out the well and chlorinating it. When he said he would need to pull the pump to do it I asked him to just replace the 1/2hp pump with a new 3/4hp pump - I figured that it made no sense to pull a 39 year old pump without replacing it. Took most of the day and I am very happy with the results. It took several hours to blow the well to clear water and The refresh rate went to 8gpm. The bottom silt was blown out and I do not have to worry over having a 39 year old pump giving out on me unexpectantly. 😊😊

Not enough barnacles growing on that pump ;)
My grandparent's well in Missouri near Long Lane had 4-wires on the Jacuzzi branded submersible pump. It was there and operating when I was 18.
That was 45 years ago. The casing was metal (looked to be painted fire red) and there was a 1" threaded galvanized pipe which ran from the captive air tank to the cap of the casing, a galvanized 90° elbow, and the rest went down the casing. The well was 250'. As I remember the casing did not go down possible 2/3 or 3/4s of the way?
This was all installed in the mud porch off the back of their house. There was also a removable hatch in the roof of the mud porch.
The well had two different types of pumps prior. A Jet pump, and prior to that a Piston pump.

I wish. I tried getting a local drilling company (near Mt. Pleasant, TN, name a lot like “Gantry”) to change my well pump and connect it to my (new) house about three years ago. They called back with the well data (depth, casing, flow, date) and I never heard back from them despite calling several times over the next six months. Watching your videos I’m confident I have all the right parts (pumps, clamps, fittings, pipe, etc) to put this all together myself in the next few weeks. Funny, but my neighbor also had them come over on the same day one of the owners came to my property, they agreed to have them drill a new well and, six months to the day they just showed up unannounced with a drilling rig, got down to 110 feet, 1.5 GPM and stopped there. Six months out the well was pumping mud, neighbor had to get a plumber to install a filter. Funnier still, that samecompany that never returned my calls is now posting ads all over the county looking for work. I hope they go bankrupt. God Bless YOU though for all you do here on YT and in the field.

@@buggsy5 Well drilling companies in that area are very territorial, like gangs. I’ve called others but get the same answer from each one. “Try “Sentry” company, we don’t work that far away.” Yeah, all of about 30 minutes from one of them, 45 for another. I tried calling a few of them and lied about my location and got similar answers. It’s like they have counties/boundaries, preexisting agreements not to step on each others’ turf. I doubt anyone will sue, but they’re the only game in town. I had a county building inspector tell me last year the TN legislature opassed a law making it illegal for homeowners to change out their own well pumps. I don’t know if this is true, I haven’t looked, but really? With a dysfunctional service industry like that what’s a farm/landowner to do?

The pump companies around here all hang their pumps on schedule 120 pvc. Pretty much have to call them to pull a pump. The pump at the ranch is on poly, me and the wife pulled it lots of times at 150 ft. When that pipe is full of water plus those Franklin pumps are heavy it is heavy to pull, I finally got to pulling it with the ATV. I like the looks of those little pumps you use. That is why I ordered the clamps from you. I figured if you are hanging the pump on poly with no safety rope you must use good clamps. Not disappointed, top quality marine grade Made in USA. Not as expensive as the chinese ones that Ace sells.

Interesting the differences in well construction. Here in the frozen north we have to use pitiless adapters to keep piping below frost level, only the wiring goes up and over.

@@tomschmidt381 While true that 120 volts would be measured from either leg to GROUND, he was measuring the voltages to a piece of metal. The input ground from the breaker panel was cut. There is PVC pipe to the left and right of the pressure tank, so there is no metallic connection through the plumbing. So the whole pressure tank assembly is electrically "floating", i.e. NOT GROUNDED. Severe electrocution hazard if either power leg should get connected to the tank metal parts. Add wet floor, five kids, write your own story.

I have been binge watching your videos... have to say that they are ALL great! I have been trying to troubleshoot / get information on the cycle rate for well pump. I have checked all the areas where water outlets are... No leaks (that I can find). At night I can hear the pump run for about 10-15 min, then about 2½ hrs later it runs another cycle. Checked the tank and still at 38# (40-60# relay). The info that I'm trying to find is this normal or should it hold until there is actual water draw from the system? Hope this makes sense 🥴.
Would really appreciate some help with this problem. I had my local well company come out and they checked everything and said they can't find any issues with the system... 😳

A toilet is the most common thing that can make a pump run in the middle of the night. Try turning off all the toilets and see if it still happens, in the morning, check each toilet tank to see if 1 is empty.
Or a toilet could be running over the overflow in the tank.
If its not a toilet causing the issue, maybe it's a yard hydrant if u have one, or it'll be a check valve in the pump that's leaking (or a loose fitting in the pump)

    • @billinfallon2634

I know that they're set at about an inch below the fill tube, neither are at the top. Haven't had any problems with them filling and shutting off when they're supposed to, but I'll check the (close) flappers again.
I have 4 hydrants in the back pasture... I sure as h*ll hope it's not one of them. They're down 2½ft, the ground is really rocky and compacted. I don't have any wetness around them.
Curious, would the well company be able to tell me if it's a check valve or fitting?

@billinfallon2634 if a check valve in the pump fails, leave the breaker off over night. Then go to a drain/faucet closest to the well head, open it & listen for a suction sound or put your hands over it & open up the faucet and feel for a vacuum action. If you get a suction, then you know that the check valve is leaking.

After watching your videos over the last several months, I took on replacing my 20 year old 100ft deep well pump with a Grundfos SQ, new pipe, wire, pressure tank, switch , etc. Came out great. Added benefit of the Grundfos has very low inrush power current so small generator or solar inverter can run it if power is out. After disinfecting, let it sit for 12 hours and run it out a valve before pressure tank. Can’t get bleach or high chlorination in septic tank.

Good point about the bleach going into the septic tank. It shuts down the anaerobic process in the tank; kills the good bacteria eating up the poop!

@H2o Mechanic, enjoyed the video! Those fire ants are definitely a pain, I was hit 3 times in the leg by one, lying in an awkward position on the ground once... Actually I think it's nice that the customer realized you weren't "on the other side of the country" and decided to call. You obviously know your craft and your videos are proof. It's already tough enough dealing with a variety of home/auto maintenance elements so if you need some "professional help", finding out that you can get that much needed help via a member of the YT community, is a huge plus because contacting a business which is SUPPOSED to provide "professional services", WE ALL KNOW, does NOT ALWAYS = "professional results"... Idk if you'll see this comment but if someone may... Two things I wondered,
    1. Why isn't the well cap "sealed" (with silicone etc., where needed) to prevent any rain water from getting into the well through those openings?
    2. Is that muddy appearance simply because the rain water has filled up and spilled into the well?
My dad, may he R.I.P., had an ~80' well and he talked about the pump and a "foot valve" or something coming losse & stirring up the water making it muddy. Idk anything about "well systems". I just remember that was something he mentioned.

You've got great content and I've learned a lot, (now I know how my Jet Pump well works), watching your videos. This video was awesome! It really shows your knowledge and skills. I was thinking at the beginning you'd be there most of the day but when you broke down your time at the end, wow you're good!

That was a very old pump. Nice of you to come out on a Saturday and fix the problem in record time. Neighbor down the street was a 'well driller / pump ' installer. He had lots of galvanized straight sticks (2 inch) laying in a large pile. I use to buy some to install CB antenna on. (used but in good shape). Used the old style slow drilling machines. Take care and God Bless
