just have to say every single time tom puts out the BEST VIDEOS for puppers on youtube.. learn something new, seemingly small but crucial every single time
One of the absolute best trainers! I have watched thousands of his videos! And have learned so much! I will continue to watch. Because just like training a dog is for the life of the dog, the same for us humans 😂❤
I taught my dog this using the "Look at me" cue. This comes in handy with puppies who are allowed to look at things but need a marker word to stop fixating. Used this the other day when we walked outside to go potty and a reactive doodle was passing by the neighborhood. My puppy got excited, but I was able to defuse it by saying "Look at me" and he did. after that he just stared at the doodle calmly until they turned a corner a block away.
Tom is hands down the greatest human trainer around. He trains us to speak to our canine companions, in a way they actually understand. Thanks to him, my wife and I speak dog and our 4 month old GSD is doing amazing. Obviously there are times that it’s hard, but Tom has equipped us with the knowledge we needed to get through those times. Thanks to Tom, we are raising our dream dog.
that is some neat conditioning. we used to have dwarf chicken, the top hen was really smart and always got rewards when flying up onto our shoulder when feeding wheat. the conditioning went both ways she flew up onto our shoulders when she was really hungry and made us get special feed for her...
Please keep this series going! I have a 4 month Boerboel and have been using your videos to make sure I know 100% that he will turn out great. Love the work you guys do! Keep it up!
😢 I had a unicorn dog in my 20s. She was a boxer/pit mix and trained beautifully with nearly no effort. Everything was a matter of showing her once, and she was a master. I never once bought treats for her. Her obedience literally just happened, almost magically. I miss her terribly, and I often wonder how amazing she could have been if I'd actually tried. I miss her terribly. Now, I have beagles... They're sweet as pie and cute as buttons, but I'm realizing my good girl set me up with wildly unrealistic expectations.
You cannot imagine how much this video helped me. I have a 6 month old aussie. It always seemed the dog did not pay attention to me but to the reward. I did your routine - now the eye 2 eye engagement is on the money. As well your heel routine - really change my life. I always had labs in my life and they are different. The aussie is smart and needs a better approach - and you are pretty much providing this better approach. Thank you, Tom ! I learned from you that with 2 pieces of beef liver you can train a dog for 15 minutes and build up a strong relationship.
I've been watching the videos, it is definitely turning out to be the best puppy training series. he's so adorably entranced by you in the kitchen videos.
I just added an 11 week old boerboel t9 my family, so this series is heaven sent 🙌 these dogs are super intelligent, but that doesn't mean you dont have to put in the work. Thank you!
Perfect timing! Our pup comes on the 7th. We're in Rochester and raw feed too. My 9 year old daughter loves training dogs and will be following along the puppy series. Thanks for doing this!
I gave my dog a treat for dropping a napkin he had in his mouth that fell on the floor one time, now he goes around the house picking up stuff and dropping it on my footstool every time I sit down and waits for a treat.
Found you last week when I found out I’m getting a golden retriever puppy at the end of December! Trying to prep as best I can to train a well mannered good family good boy!🙌🏼
This is brilliant and totally makes sense , my dogs are various ages and I will be staring this technique with all of them to get training on track as totally my fault I haven’t done in the past . Looking forward to following the series .thanks @tomdavis
I just got a 13-week-old Mal/Shepherd mix. She's feisty! I also have a 15-month-old male Malinois, and he is obsessed with the puppy. I don't know how I got so lucky to have you doing a puppy series at the exact same time I have a puppy the same age, but I'll take it :)
Hi, came across your YT channel a few days ago. Just rescued a black mouth cur retriever mix 4 days ago, he’s 4 months old. Been struggling on where to start and this is a big help. Keep the vids coming!!
CONGRATS on your Black Mouth Cur!!! I had one for 7 years, and while it took some time to get him acclimated, he turned out to be so incredible and loving!
Once I taught my Boerboel this 'look' command he learned to do such stair downs with us, could stair in my eyes for hours (sometimes with puddles under his lips if he anticipates food). He now uses this to communicate with us, especially if he needs something, just sits in front of you and stairs intensely so we just have to guess what it is he needs, usually he shows.
So great watching Burleigh grow in size, confidence and obedience, Tom❣️ Under your guidence, he's developing into the perfect new member for your family.. Thanks for taking us along! Safe travels, friend ❤❤ Stay FROSTY... Keep your powder dry and your head on a swivel... 🇺🇲🇺🇲WWG1WGA🇺🇲🇺🇲NCSWIC🇺🇲🇺🇲
I'm loving these tips. They're not (too) simple at all but rather very realistic for those first days/weeks with a new pup. Also: my gosh Burleigh seems so calm! I was thinking I would have loved this series when we got our pup back in December and reflecting back on what we did and didn't do with her and I mostly just remember the struggle of training when she would not sit still for 2 seconds especially not if there were treats around which just immediately sent her into overdrive 😅 She's gotten better luckily and we're catching up on training!
This is awesome! I live near large wild Kangaroo's and my 9 mnth chi still gets scared on the lead so looking forward to learning from this so I can be a better dog parent! My 12 wk old Chihuahua is great with eye contact, Place and her name and hoping that I can retrain my teenage chi at the same time.
This new puppy content couldnt have come at a better time, getting my puppy in two weeks and this is helping me so much with preparing for it, thanks Tom :)
I’m studying to become a dog trainer (service dogs) and tomorrow I’ll go for the first time to a local shelter to start working with the dogs and I’m so excited I can’t sleep , it’s like 2am and I’m here binge watching Tom’s videos 😅😅😅
Hey Tom things are definitely moving in the positive direction. Just saying , I do this exercise but I use the Good where you use Yes. I really like your hold using the word Good. Think I'm going to switch my words with my new clients. Thank you .... Again 😁🐾🐕🦺!!
Men thank you so much for this content/series,i just got a puppy a week a go and its really helpfull. Giving me the confidence to build my puppy confidence.
I am in love with this series it’s so engaging and fun to watch I all ways wanted a puppy and this prepares me for one .amazing series love it .keep up the good work ❤❤!!!
I love Burleigh so much already.....I would love a Boerboel pup but am getting...I feel...too old to start with such a strong power breed. I'm 68 this year and have a nearly 9 yr old GR and also raise guide dog pups for Guide Dogs Victoria Melbourne Australia. So get a new pup each 14mnths and love all the training and preparation for their future role. I would have to give that up for at least a good year while I focus on the Boerboel pup. Not sure I could do that.....have been addicted to GD pups for the last 20 odd years. Really love your videos and Koda and Burleigh are a credit to your love and devotion to them. Just as your young son will be too. 👏👏🐶🐶👩❤️👨👶❤❤❤
I have a Cane Corso and Boerboel mix mastiff. She's a tank. She is now 3 months old. I do so appreciate your videos. She doesn't like rainy weather and getting her to go outside to potty has been a real challenge. Any advice you can give me is very much appreciated.
Cute puppy, if I had a squeaky toy in a pouch around my German Shepherd, he would never forget it, he'd go after it no matter what 😂 but he's pretty good and understands so many words.
He's coming along nicely. I'm a pet owner trainer and I learned the early stuff a little late but Maxie has come along nicely. I'm thinking about getting another pup now that I know better how to train. Mal maybe! Lol😅
Tom, Burleigh is so stinkin adorable 🥰🐶 Question 🙋🏼♀️ do you ever let the dog have the treat you throw down? Or no, just from your hand. Thanks and, have a Blessed Day 😊
That doesn’t mean the dog is underweight. Rib show is normal in boerbols, especially when exhaling. Huge puppies like this are hard keepers, too. I’m sure as a dog professional Tom knows what he’s doing. The “ribs are showing, feed more” logic is not always correct and can lead to over feeding if you’re not considering the actual body condition score.
So I did it backwards. I am trying now to get him to focus on me. He is 8 months we got him when he was 4 months. Any different tips for am 8 month old? I just found your videos I'll keep watching. Thank you
Do the other members of your family do this work with Burleigh, too? If not, will it be necessary for them to and when would they start? Loving the puppy vids! ❤️❤️
Getting another pup. How do I ensure he bonds with me more than my other dogs (all GSDs). My 2nd pup bonded with my oldest dog and I’m definitely second fiddle! I don’t want to make the same mistake again.
Later when you teach Burley commands and obedience would you use Lakota and her obedience to help him understand what is required from him? Just wondering if that would be effective.
Love your videos Tom! I don't have a puppy but for the next dog, I will keep your series in mind. I would love for you to touch on his relationship with your partner. Is she doing some training with her too, is his training carrying on with her also?
I am religiosly following your puppy series. Thank you for the videos! But there is one thing I have always wondered, at what point do we stop rewarding them with food? And when we stop, how do we prevent them getting discouraged? Because obviously we can't walk around with treats all the time and it is not so nice if your dog listens to you "only" because you feed them.
I have a four month old German shepherd I am thinking of getting a shock collar but I don’t know if I should get the dogtra 280c or the mini educator. Also my dog likes to chase people that are on a run and she also likes to chase bikes what shock collar do you think I should use to train her?
Im training my 18 week old german shepherd he sits on command, listens to a "come call" but i can not get engagement with crate training or any other training. He likes to do his own thing and not engage with my attempts to train him. Any videos on your channel i should watch or advise for me?
I have a Dalmatian mix puppy who really could care less about treats which makes training a little bit more tricky. Any tips on how to help with this??
I have a yorkie puppy and I’m about to pull my hair out! What do I do if she’s too young for Treats? I’m feeding her a milk replacer because I got her too early and she’s peeing everywhere
Thank you for this! I've had my dog for a year and we have a bit of engagement but I wanted to build more and didn't know how. I'm going to start here!
Hey Tom, this might be a silly question, but I'm curious about the best ways to show our dogs affection. Beyond play, training, and good boy pats...do you endorse snuggling? Growing up, my dogs were constantly climbing onto my lap, leaning against me and (in my mind) initiating cuddles in a very human-like way. Looking back, I wonder if this was a good sign or something less desirable, like a display of dominance/ownership. Anyway, I am preparing to get my first dog as an adult and I would love to know if the "snuggles" that humans love to bestow on their pups is actually wanted/needed by dogs and healthy in the long run. Thanks!
My 4 month puppy I adopted last week is not very treat reacting.I put the treat in front of her mouth (after no reaction if the distance is 1-2 steps) to tease her but she ll be lazy half of the time like the treat was not that exciting or like she expects me to feed her the treat right inside her mouth which of course I will never do if she doesn't deserve it. Any advice?
What kind of collar is this? I did train my puppy without treats. She had (still has) one particular toy she loved and I used this instead of giving food. She learned really quickly (Australian Cattle Dog). All the dogs we had before her were trained with treats, and my old guy (14 years now) is still so fixated on treats, he only does things for food.
Will this engagement training work with two owners? My wife and I will be getting a puppy soon and I want it to be comfortable and have a good relationship with the both of us.
what is your oppinion on restarting my training from scratch. my dog is already moderatly advanced in obedience but i want to take it to the next level . she is a bully and quite stubborn in her ways, what would you think is the best way to reform my training ?
We have been enjoying this series so far, and have been following it closely we just adopted a 2 month old BMC from animal control. Your tips have been a lifesaver as far as potty training, and crate training. However, I was wondering if you would do a video on how you handle the interactions between your young children and your new puppy when the puppy is playing to rough with them, nipping, or jumping on them. That would be super helpful to have, keep up the videos in this series coming we are following right along with training ours, and it is so helpful. I know you have some young ones as well so just wondering how you are handling that. We have 3 year old twins, and a 7 year old, and just managing that has been tricky, puppy wants to play chases the 3 year old and is jumping and nipping, kid runs away to avoid it and puppy thinks it's a fun game but the kid is terrified. Just stuff like that, we try to intervene as quickly as we can, but yeah.
We're no Tom Davis, lol, and we're first time pet owner so take this with a grain of salt... We have a 9.5 and 3.5 year old. We taught the 3.5 yo to freeze, put his hands up immediately and hold them across his chest, and to help really loudly if our pup (10 weeks old) nips or tries to nip at him. (He's the closest person to her size so of course the puppy wants to play with him.) We also always watch closing and will yelp, distract with another toy, or intervene in other ways when necessary. Another tip to encourage safe play: we let him roll a ball toward her. We also allow him to use a really long tug toy with her so his hands won't get nipped during playing. Hope this helps!
Q: I’ve had my pup for about 3 days. We’ve been potty training and crate training. he’s about 8 weeks old, yet follows me around without a leash. I tried the leash today and he did NOT like it. If I should, how would I introduce the leash to him in a way that he likes it?
What if your dog is not treat/food or toy motivated. My im working on more engagement with my pyr. He refused to hand feed as a puppy. He literally went without food for 4 days when he was 8 weeks old because he did not want to eat from my hand.
I don't even have a dog atm. Just here for the puppy cuteness 😂 and some learning too.
hehe, thanks for being here!
Me too!
Getting one real soon, I'll update y'all🌚

Loving the series. I am getting my pup in 2 weeks going to use this series as a resource
Great! You will be right in line!
literally same
I've been watching the videos, it is definitely turning out to be the best puppy training series. he's so adorably entranced by you in the kitchen videos.
Thank you!
Do you recommend waiting until they’re about 12-13 weeks to start obedience training??
Yay, more puppy videos!
I’m bringing in a puppy in a week re going through this series so everything stays fresh in my mind.
I just added an 11 week old boerboel t9 my family, so this series is heaven sent 🙌 these dogs are super intelligent, but that doesn't mean you dont have to put in the work. Thank you!

My female Boerboel Ellie is 13 weeks. Working on this engagement since 11 weeks. Going ok, definitely need more practice, but it is working!!
ready to follow this whole series, we will both benefit, he knows his stuff but reinforcing behaviors is always good.
Love it! Keep the vids comming they are great.

Men thank you so much for this content/series,i just got a puppy a week a go and its really helpfull. Giving me the confidence to build my puppy confidence.
Thank you so much for making this series. I'm following it all with my puppy and it'[s working like dream! Greetings from Wales UK

I am loving this content! We have an 11 week old puppy and are gleaning soooo much information from you. THANK YOU SO MUCH!
i love your videos. i got two shepherd collies 7weeks and I had no idea where to start from. I just wish you could have a 1 on 1 session with me
Got me a boerboel malinois mix puppy, learning a lot from your videos🤝🏽
I have a Cane Corso and Boerboel mix mastiff. She's a tank. She is now 3 months old. I do so appreciate your videos. She doesn't like rainy weather and getting her to go outside to potty has been a real challenge. Any advice you can give me is very much appreciated.
Cute puppy, if I had a squeaky toy in a pouch around my German Shepherd, he would never forget it, he'd go after it no matter what 😂 but he's pretty good and understands so many words.
God this is helping so much making great progress on my Cane Corso puppy
2:40 engagement
He's coming along nicely. I'm a pet owner trainer and I learned the early stuff a little late but Maxie has come along nicely. I'm thinking about getting another pup now that I know better how to train. Mal maybe! Lol😅

FINALLY A NEW VIDEO
Yeo!
Also curious about this
Every member should do it. You want the dog to cooperate with all family member for sure
Love this series!!! ❤
He is so cute!❤
Getting another pup. How do I ensure he bonds with me more than my other dogs (all GSDs). My 2nd pup bonded with my oldest dog and I’m definitely second fiddle! I don’t want to make the same mistake again.
What brand beef liver treats do you use??? I bought some but they were huge and too big for treats for my puppy???
Cuteness overload❤
what if you have a really small dog that doesnt eat much? what would be a good treat to practice this
Later when you teach Burley commands and obedience would you use Lakota and her obedience to help him understand what is required from him? Just wondering if that would be effective.
Hi Tom!! What would you recommend training schedule wise when both adults work full time jobs?
Is there an episode 2 in this series?
Love your videos Tom! I don't have a puppy but for the next dog, I will keep your series in mind. I would love for you to touch on his relationship with your partner. Is she doing some training with her too, is his training carrying on with her also?
yes

Great Info, thanks
Hey brother can you do a video on everything you bought before picking him up that would be awesome!
Check out my first video with him under the playlist
Love the breed! Such a squishy puppy❤
OMG he is a gorgeous boy. ❤
Love this
God love that dog wish I could have a dog
Im training my 18 week old german shepherd he sits on command, listens to a "come call" but i can not get engagement with crate training or any other training. He likes to do his own thing and not engage with my attempts to train him. Any videos on your channel i should watch or advise for me?

So is there a such thing as "too young/too early" to start applying leash pressure?
Amazing footage :)
Do you think this can work with a 3 year old mastiff. Hes very good but very stubborn at times!!!
Age doesn't matter. He says that in this video around 9:40 marker. Go for it but be patient.
Absolutely will. Find his high value reward and go step at a time. Very worthwhile.
Q: I’ve had my pup for about 3 days. We’ve been potty training and crate training. he’s about 8 weeks old, yet follows me around without a leash. I tried the leash today and he did NOT like it. If I should, how would I introduce the leash to him in a way that he likes it?
Just here for the puppy
Great
Good ❤
Lakota just wanting the camera person to throw the frisbee 😂
hahah yep!
What if your dog is not treat/food or toy motivated. My im working on more engagement with my pyr. He refused to hand feed as a puppy. He literally went without food for 4 days when he was 8 weeks old because he did not want to eat from my hand.
