This is SUCH an important video because it depicts actual reality of owning a puppy. By the way…80 pounds and still growing!?!? YIKE!! Also every time that dog looks at the camera you can’t help but smile and laugh at how cute he is…☺️
He'll probably more than double that weight when fully grown.
One of the guys i know at the local dog park has one of these at 2 yrs old and he's 200 lbs. Absolute beast of a dog. Super sweet.
Keeping it real round here! Thanks so much for watching ❤
My american bulldog is 85lbs at 6 months. He also grow until 2 But i BET he Will slow down soon. But he Will be real big for a american bulldog, 155-160. But This boerboel Will be 200-220 😆
I hope this message reaches every single person who thinks about owning a dog. Dogs will dog ❤
Me too.
I have a 6-year old rotweiller that i have trained since 2 months old. During his puppy stage, i did teach him the "leave it" and "drop" commands for several reasons. First, his safety. Second our sanity. I also taught him using the "trade-off" method. Treats were used as well, however, i wanted him to know the difference between my stuff and his stuff. I can place a new item next to his toy box now and he will explore it. However, he will leave it alone because i haven't given him permission to "take it." My house is nicely decorated and the headboard of my bed has a few stuffed animals on it. My rottie and my shih tzu do not touch them because they have both been taught the difference between what is theirs and what is mine. I have had my fur babies since they were pups. Kali, the Shih Tzu is now 13 years old. Buster, the Rotweiller is now 6. It's a matter of trust and respect, and boundaries between the dog and the owner.
As a owner of a 7 month old Irish Red Setter, this video was needed! Obedience, staying in place, walking on leash etc is all going well. But he's still a puppy who wanna chew on things and try to eat the catfood on the counter!
Ah yes you probably relate a lot to this video lol
This video added another level of understanding and helped me to make the separation in my mind between trained and just “being a puppy”.
Wohoo!
I needed this so much. I felt like I was failing my dog because he is obedient, but when we aren't training he is a velociraptor LOL. Thank you so much Tom!
So happy this is helpful!
❤ Burleigh is a sweet baby puppy, he is smart, rambunctious and brave! So happy to see him enjoy his puppy stage🙃☺️🤭💕
I've fostered 133 pit bull puppies over the last nine years, and this is my reality. Puppies chew on EVERYTHING. I buy dog beds two and three at a time. 🙂 I thought that my current foster puppy was over the bed chewing thing and put out a new one yesterday. (I have four dogs of my own, so there are a lot of beds in the house.) A half hour later, there was bed stuffing all over the living room. And I can't begin to tell you how many dozens and dozens of throw rugs have been peed on and chewed up. It's a good thing they're cute, or...
Thank you for fostering! 🐾💙
My Corgi puppy didn’t even turn into a dog until she was almost 2 years old despite having good obedience, socialization, and exercise. She had so much energy and was into everything. Now she’s 4, and she is awesome, but I’m not sure I ever want to have a puppy again!!
Love boerboels, they are by far the best guard, family, protection work ect of the mastiff breeds and other large dogs. When trained properly, given a purpose, an adequate size yard ect to patrol N guard ect they are the best & if they come from a working line breeder ect are impressive at bite work, protection work ect. Have found they are a more handler sensitivite of the mastiff working/guard/protection breeds and need to wait till theyre older than corso, gsd, dobermans ect. Cant be rushed and have to let their bodys, bones, joints ect mature properly before starting intense training and exercise for them.
We have a 9month old Boerboel cross Mastino Napoletano. Not our first rodeo with this breed or mix. She is a pain in the butt sometimes but also the sweetest gal. We crate trained her from day one. Makes life so much more relaxed. Not having to worry about her hurting herself when we are not around.
Its kind of like putting a baby in a cot. You know they're safe and its only for a while.
Keep loving big boy they thrive on gentle hands and a lot of patience and thanks for sharing and keeping it real.
Our girl still gets into puppy mischief, loves stealing our shoes and running off with them, teasing the cats, still wants to mouth our hands. All part of the puppy life. 😂 Wouldn't have it any other way. Being 9months and just a big clumbsy, stubborn lovable furrball
Hello, Tom 👋🏼. I love how open, honest and transparent you are. Burleigh is so adorable and getting so big! 😳 So good to see Lakota, too! Glad she’s on the mend. Have a Blessed Day 😊🐶
Thanks so much :)
So appreciate the transparency of this training. We DO get frustrated with puppy life so it's good to get affirmation that we're not failing....just have to be present and consistent. Thank You Tom 🐾
Thanks for this. We have a 10 month old lab bloodhound mix and this helps normalize everything we’re experiencing. We’ll just keep doing what we’re doing! Burleigh is adorable.
This is something that I really need. My dog is turning a year tomorrow and he behaves exactly like this. I just realized I was being frustrated to him for a year when I shouldnt have and those moments could have been a much better experience for both of us.
I’ve got a 5 month German shepherd puppy and this video so far has been amazing.
My puppy has amazing obedience too, but that puppy brain sometimes just takes over.
The good news is is that even during zoomies and witching hour she will listen to obedience commands. Even though the moment I twitch too fast she is off back to playing “you can’t catch me dad!”
It’s really helpful to see what realistic expectations should be. I’ve been heavily working with my GSD puppy and at times I feel like I’m failing her, but other times I think she’s amazing. It’s easy to forget that immaturity is immaturity, and it’s totally okay.
Same here. Nice to hear it
Everyone goes through this and it does get better but never is over :)
😅 I knew that puppy would test Tom's soul!
It's great to watch him relearning the joys and travails of a big, goofy, willful dog.
👨🏫 Tom Davis is definitely back in school!
always!

🐕 Burleigh ROCKS!
YES!!! Thank you for this - Getting puppies into adulthood is much like parenting, requiring diligence and patience and teaching accountability. Thankfully this phase is shorter, (!!) but no less important. Thank you for showing that laying the foundation is the key to a great dog. So valuable.
I wish I had had this 2 years ago!! I thought I was failing my corso because I had a very well trained puppy in obedience, but was a nightmare when we weren’t training, even with meeting with trainer consistently. She’s now 2 and finally where I’m not constantly battling the frustrations of daily life. This was very encouraging and realistic.
Uff, thank you so much for this video. I was so frustrated with my grandson's 5 month old Cane Corso. Knows all the basic commands but is tearing my house up, not to mention my arms!!!!!
Am starting to use a slip leash, also have a harness but my last resourse is a E-collar. Again, thanks so much for this realistic video. My fur baby isn't so bad after all😅
The exact same as my 5 month old female boerboel, good obedience, but still just a huge goofy puppy that has 100 toys but will constantly go sneak one of my sons toys every single time 😅
THANK YOU!!! I feel so much less alone and no longer feel like such a failure!!!
haha!
Boerboels are different. They mature slowly. The shift mentally and emotionally between 2-3 years is almost like having a different dog. His confidence and own sense of what is right and wrong comes to the fore. Depending on how everything went before that, it can be a good or bad thing.
Yep! Super slow!
Reminds my of our Magnus. He was our Boerbel also. We did all of this training plus service dog training (ASA) and agility training. Miss our guy
Love Burleigh!
This is such a helpful and real video! So good for people to see what can be trained and what has to be managed and guided. Also, Burleigh is just SO cute! 80lbs already!😂😂
Tom,
Watched your videos for a long time when I was training my Aussie. We recently got another puppy and jumped back on your page. Come to find out we also have a 5-1/2 month old boreboel! So awesome!
Love, love, LOVE this!! 🙌 I have a 5 month old gsd, I’m a newish trainer (~1yr) and I really needed this reminder! No one really talks about this part like this. I find myself getting frustrated and questioning my very existence far more often than I thought I would lol. A lot of what you talked about I’ve known to an extent or on a surface level, but to actually see you dealing with all the same shit I am rn is so helpful, as is being reminded that it’s all normal puppy stuff that’ll subside with time and guidance!
P.S. you’re the reason I became a prof dog trainer, so thank you for everything you do! The way you teach and explain things made everything just click for me, and I knew this is what I was meant to do. I’m so grateful to have found you and your videos, they pretty much changed my life in all the best ways 😊
I loved the “what Lakota was doing” 😂😂😂
haha
I have a 5 month old GSD (suspected Mal mix ) and I have been watching your channel since 2019, When I first got into training with my older GSD. The week after I brought home my puppy I saw your first Burleigh video and it has been so reasuring to me after not having a puppy for 9 years. To see the realness of your experience being so similar to mine. I’ve never trained a puppy with the expectation of her just being a puppy before, It has been a totaly different experience. Focusing on relationship and a solid foundation, guidance and patience, with the needed resiliance and stubborness to match. Thank you for creating great content, can’t wait to continue watching! Long time fan
Thank you!! I NEEDED TO HEAR THIS!! I’ve been so frustrated with the puppy behavior feeling like it was my training not working, but now I know she does listen she is just a puppy (6 months) 🎉 I have hope and my perspective and patience shifted immediately
Love, that you as a pro are able to admit, that a stubborn puppy is even for you hard to deal with. Thank you!
Such an important message-He's still a puppy; expectations should be commensurate with that. Thank you!
Great reality check for us dog owners! 👌🏻
Look how much Burleigh has grown! He’s is such a sweet boy! I know that puppy stage can be a little frustrated but it goes away with time. I love videos with Burleigh in them. He is such a sweet hulk lol ❤️❤️
Ohmy....a boerboel LOL.
I babysat a boerboel for years, great dog but omg the mind on those!
To me and all he saw as his he was the sweetest log of a dog. I owned an 15 pound dog and since that was a senior the boerboel had all the respect for him. He made sure my dog ate before he did.
I also love the style they protect, never harm, just warn, until someone wants to harm....they go full protect mode.
I am a real small dog owner but I loved that impossible log of a dog
PREACH! I share this to clients all the time. Even in our home full of wolfdogs, now have 3 month old high content wolfdog pup that I am doing the same with.
I have a half Malinois who just turned 4 months so this is very comforting lol😭 she’s smart and can learn anything fast but she’s still very distracted and has days where she acts like she’s never learned manners in her life. Randomly decided dogs and strangers in public are scary and started growling when she sees them at a distance so we’re working on that
Patience, consistency and time... I ended many of our puppy days with a few tears 💞
I love horses as well that’s so cool that your son is interested in them
Thank you so much for the training series with your own puppy. It's been very enjoyable :)
I love your showing how this works even with a top tier canine behaviorist. A puppy is a puppy
He’s so adorable 🥰 ❤
Great video, Tom. A simple message but easy to forget.
We rescued a 3 month old (now 18 months) German shepherd/pitbull and she was very smart, took to training right away, but that puppiness made our lives chaotic for the first 6 months. It was almost unbearable at times. Now, she is an absolute joy. A very intelligent and obedient young dog.
Thank you for your videos, Tom. They got us through some very difficult times 💜
Thank you!
💥👏💥👏💥 Cant thank you enough for these videos!!!!! THIS VIDEO is exactly the kind of information that keeps me from saying, "My dog's training never looks like Tom's. I may as well quit." THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for watching!
I like all of your videos but really LOVE this series with Burleigh!
He's hilarious and a cute puppy, I love that dog!
Two years already?! Happy Birthday, Mr Banks!
I never liked e collars because I didn’t understand how they were used - I just upgraded to a Dogtra and it’s awesome! I have my poodle trained to use the pager to mean “come find me” and it’s been a game changer for our park trips and he is so confident compared to before when he’d panic if he couldn’t find me - now he knows I’m nearby and looking for him too!
Thanks for watching!
The crate is the den.
It’s also a boundary
Henry loved his
Goose loves his too
Hey Tom, when he is fully trained, can you get another puppy so we can do this all over again?😊
HA!
Burleigh is so freaking cute! That face!
I Love How You Love your puppy, and how patient you are with him
This is such a great video. It’s important to see that even a professional can get frustrated and to know that some dogs just take longer!!
Professional and useful training learning videos to better understand and train their puppies
Fabulous video! Realistic expectations! Thank you. Burleigh is ridiculously fun to watch!
Love this style video! Burleigh is adorable. Thanks for the tips.
I love this video. Thank you for being so honest. It's so easy to get frustrated when training and your dog is still doing puppy things. Thanks for sharing that this is normal. Big sigh of relief 😊
Thank you Tom
Your videos have been monumental for me as I’m training my 11 week old puppy
I appreciate your relatability with your puppy
Thanks so much for this info. Very helpful for those of us going through the puppy stage.
Happy you like it!
Lakota and the chipmunk 🐿️ 🤣
Burleigh is so big and adorable! Thanks for the honesty about the puppy stage struggles, I think it makes the rest of us feel a bit better. We just made it out of the “velociraptor stage” with our husky pup at about 7 month. Thought the nipping/chewing would never end, regardless of our corrections. 🫠
haha!
What a terrier… errr, terror! 😂. AWESOME video! Thank you, Tom!
Great video. With my smaller pups, I would use frozen baby washrags to help with the teething. It would help numb some of their discomfort. For Burleigh's size, it may have to be a small hand towel. 😂
Thank you so much for this video, it helps put things into perspective! It actually made me more confident with what I have accomplished so far with my pup (6 month Greek Shepard). But he is not as stubborn as Burleigh! We have managed to eliminate the obsessive chewing on my furniture and hands, but it looks like it is more a personality thing rather than training. I have followed your videos on walking on a leash and he walks like a champ with minimum equipment, very focused on me, doesn't pay attention to other dogs and other things going around. So thank you very much for that 🙂
Keep these videos coming!
Awesome video. Thank you. We have a 6 month, 68 lbs female Mastiff x Bullmastiff. 🥰
love your videos. this one especially really helped me understand that immaturity isn't fixable, it's just a part of it and something you work with. i have a 5 month old corgi pup who is so brilliant and obedient, but her immaturity strikes her often in public settings. i now know this is normal and okay, and something we will get past once she grows up a little bit! i have learned so much from your videos and they have also confirmed my own "method/theory" i use while training. speak to the animal in their language, not just with words but with your body as well. i communicate with my pup how an alpha wolf/dog would and put her in her place if she's being bad, but on the flip side give her all the human love and rewards when she does something good. it has worked wonders for training horses and has now worked wonders for me training my dog. i will be investing in an e collar to continue my training like you have recommended and i'm excited to try it! thank you for the wonderful and readily available training advice.
So useful..as dog trainers we always seek the fastest and most effective solution, sometimes you gotta roll with it and mentor rather than hard-core train. This is pure gold. thanks
YeP!
Thank you so much Tom that was so refreshing to see😊 I currently have a 4 month old doodle breed & she is great at learning but omg but those real puppy moments are no joke 😂❤
😅😅i have a 74kg 2yr old boeboel an hes still as goofy an daft as he was at 6 months😂...they are a challenge but a nice wholesome one when you know what your dealing with😊..so nice to see this video out there.
Love seeing this and the transparency. I have a Corso a little over a year and he's great now. Loves people, well trained on e-collar, etc and reminds me a lot of Burliegh but the first year and even a bit now he's still a pain in the ASS. Wants to chew stuff and gets bored and just has to be doing something. Regardless of obedience, he's still a puppy in his mind. Loves to wrestle and teeth as well and doesn't realize being over 120Lbs doesn't feel good! lol but I love him. But looking back I'm glad that 4 month-1 year phase is behind. He calmed down quite a bit and is starting to grow up.
This video is so helpful as I have the same experience with my cane corso puppy. She is well trained thanks to Kasen and your team, but still does annoying puppy things. It helps to know those puppy things are normal even with a trained puppy, as are the other struggles of a large breed.
When you called him a blockhead and he looked at the camera like “who me?” 😂😂😂
Videos like this, with the associated commentary, are so beneficial in learning to live with a new puppy and all owners of young dogs need to see this video. Puppies are not born fully trained, they need help to learn how to fit into family and community life and even with that help (even by such an experienced professional trainer/owner and often with specialised training), at times it's a fact they're still puppies and that's what makes them adorable and creates those fun memories - even those involving damage to prized possessions the human forgot to put away. 🤫🤐
Burleigh is a great advocate for seeing this wonderful and sometimes exasperating puppy stage. Thanks Tom for sharing this video.
Thank you so much for this video, makes me feel so much better about how I’ve been training my puppy
That face, and Lakota 8 weeks???? I can’t. ❤❤❤ Happy birthday (belated) to Banks! 🎉
I just want to say thank you so so much for making this vid. You have no idea how it means and somehow lifts my spirit back up to see that we are not alone in this puppy raising journey and what a reminder that puppies will be puppies no matter how trained they are!
Thank you for being open and real. This means alot for us personally ❤️❤️
Reminds me of my Saint Bernard with those goofy puppy antics. He's 3 now but the puppy still comes through sometimes
Wow he is soooo big!
You had a lovely home, hehehehe
thank you!
Adopted at 6 months from a farm, my 18 month old lab/aussie shepherd never really chews on anything. There was a phase where he licked and gingerly nibbled on our baseboards but we nipped that in the bud pretty quick. He’s still struggling with leash walking, categorically refuses to ‘down’, is hit or miss on ‘place/stay’ though we’re working on that, and destroys all his toys (superchewer!) with great gusto. Perfect dog? No. Still a puppy? Yes. And that requires not only consistent training but a ton of understanding and patience! Thank you for all your insight. 😊
I appreciate this more than I can say! I have a 7 month old husky mix puppy, and I’ve been following along with these puppy videos since I got him. His obedience is decent, but he’s a menace in the house and I was getting extremely frustrated and started feeling like I was doing something wrong. It sounds silly now but I really didn’t think that trainers still had these home problems with their puppies. Mine climbs EVERYTHING (think he’s part kelpie) including counters, mouths me, and tears up toys like there is no tomorrow. I’m so glad that this is still expected at his age.
Thank you for sharing this. This helps us feel better about our experience. Our standard doodle is now 2-1/2 and recently matured enough that we noticed a distinct change and he is desiring to obey commands in a better way. It’s like a lightbulb turned on for him (or maybe distracting light bulbs turned off) and perceiving this gave us insight to communicate better in managing lingering behaviors. It now feels like everything we’ve done in training the past 2-1/2 years is coming together and working and he can still be our sweet goofball.
Thanks for watching :)
Great video good information. I've been watching you for some time now. I have a 15 mo. old border collie. Extremely smart. He was 6 mo. When I got him and scared of everything and everyone. He does great me not as good. But he is good for me😊
We have a 6 month old boerboel/pit who is also trained using your methods. He is very obedient and also a pain in the butt. Without the training it would be a nightmare. Thanks for reinforcing the training and giving us Burley as a yardstick. Thanks for your videos.
Thank you so very much for this ❤
My Boerboel didnt stop counter surfing and eating my trim until bout 14 months. They are just sooo big yet sooo immature. Theyre a puppy till 3 yrs old. But Ill never ever not have a Boerboel in my home 😊😊😊😊😊
Thank you for keeping it real! Top notch video.
I love the new shirt! Especially how "Burleigh" starts big and gets smaller to fit haha EXACTLY how I write things on those stickers in real life.
Tom, thanks again. My boerboel puppy is now 4 months, and he's so much fun. But he's a handful also. I've been using your technique, and it is a major difference
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for this. It's very reassuring to know that even you, a professional trainer, have the same puppy struggles as we have. I'm starting to see light at the end of the puppy tunnel with my 18 month old Lab mix. I've lost count of the number of dog beds & blankets she's killed.
The best thing I did was crate train her. She loves her crate, it is not punishment at all, it is her safe place. The problem is she has trouble settling down anywhere else in the house. The prong collar was a game changer for us. Again, not punishment, she knows that we are going for a walk and is eager to have that collar on.
I can so hear and feel your frustration and tiredness. Puppies are WORK even if you know what to do and how to do it! My 6mo Dobie bitch is sooo sweet but busy and a total instigator with my 4yo male Dobie. It’s temporary and they get along great and she’s brings us both so much joy, but I’m TIRED. lol. Burleigh is adorable, I’ve have 5 English Mastiffs and a Great Dane before my Dobies, similar but the drives now are more like Lakota’s which the trainer in me appreciates but kinda miss the couch potatoes at times. 😅
Exceptional information for those who are dealing with an active puppy! Thanks Tom!
I also have a Lokota-type mindset dog and then got a boxer x staffy, he's two now, same colouring as your boy and have since learned: There are two types of dogs: The working dog and the What's-in-it-for-me dog! The second type is a cunning creature lol
Thanks for posting this. My boy is about as obedient as your puppy, but still likes to "munch" on random things in the house. I thought I was doing something wrong because he still does.
Thanks for watching!
This is a great video. I have a 60kg 18 month old dominant male Rottweiler and I fully agree with everything Tom says in this. Large dogs are slow to mature, it’s 2 steps forward and 1 step back, but when they finally get it together, it’s extremely rewarding. Once my Rottweiler is 2+ years old I will be adding a boerboel and going through it all again.
He loves him some Tom🥰
Never been so fast to click on a video before
This is so reassuring!!! I have a 11 month springer spaniel and she’s been like this!
Ha,ha,ha you gave us a deep hearty laugh .ohh, I love my puppywupper. Thanks.❤
So helpful! We just got a puppy
I appreciate you so much
