This was fantastic! This is exactly what I need and want to see. Perfect example of what socializing our puppy should look like. Thanks Tom for showing it with Burleigh. He is growing so fast. He’s in good hands! Keep these Burleigh puppy videos coming. I’m learning so much for our just turned 1 yr old female boxer.

I love this so much, because positive only folk only shows puppy "training" in perfect scenario's with easy dogs. This is raw, uncut, totally random (so not perfect), with one of the most difficult to socialize puppies. Bravo! This helps a TON of people, I am sure.

Yes! Please! Socializing these protection breeds in their formative months so important (I was a Dutchie owner) and psychologically unique to their future genetic push (forgive me, I’m a shrink :). More, please! I love to “hear” your brain put the pieces together.

    • @david18ireland
      @david18ireland 4 месяца назад

It's not psychologically unique. Every breed has to be socialised the same way, there's no difference between the breeds in terms of when socialisation must begin (3 weeks old) and the manner in which you socialise them. I'm an accredited dog behaviourist in England

I found it interesting that when a dog passed by he stopped and turned to continue watching the dog as if he was guarding you and made sure the other dog continued walking away. I did appreciate this video and would love to see more. I’ve had my rescue two weeks now and thought he was aggressive towards people and other dogs. My daughter came over with her two dogs (a lab and a hunting dog) to meet mine. I’m happy to say my dog played the entire time so I guess he’s not aggressive. I also walked him today and asked a lady if he could meet her. Again he went up to her and she gave him a couple pets. I’ve learned so much watching your videos! Thank you for what you do! 😊❤️🙏🏼

Absolute favourite breed shown at its best. They are solid companions and if set boundaries and just good social manners they thrive. I say perfect for single women who are active as they can read energies and good judge of situations. Non intrusive in public. My girl waits for me to introduce her and knows to look at my face. They try to be bossy and have selective hearing on open ground to do perimeter checks. Mine live with tiny rescue dogs and foster dogs. Zero reaction even if pushed. I call my girl the plod donkey lol. So glad i found her. Very special.

You nailed the Boerboel breed right on the head, stubborn is the number one thing and very confident. They are some the most protective for sure and the most loyal breed you will ever see. I love when people see mine and are like I want one. People should do a lot of research on the breed and when they think they are ready do more as they are a very strong breed that is not for a lot of people as they will not be able to handle the breed if not experienced.

Hi, my boy is my nightmare but I love him he gets daily socialization since from seven weeks of age. My problem with him is that he doesn't like other dogs to stare at him, cats, he hates cats, or any other animals. The only animal he doesn't mind are the sparrows. They get close and he just stares but stays put. There are woods three blocks from me and I can't walk him into the woods because of fox, feral cats, ect. I wish I could send him to you for training even though he's had training already. When it's just myself and him in the house, he's fine. When anyone comes over, he's not well behaved.

Super interesting to see a Boerie trained this way. In South Africa they're used as guard dogs on farms a lot. In that setting they're mostly trained by the older dog in a kind of apprenticeship and it's definitely not gentle. They're also not socialised as a rule. When you stop at a farmhouse and you don't know the Boerie yet, you do NOT get out of the car until the owner is there and you don't move freely until you get the handshake that tells the good boy/girl that you're okay.

You're probably just not as generally social as some people lol. But hey, to each his own, right? As for me, I get filled with pride when people love on my dogs and I see the joy that my dogs brings to those people 😊 But it rarely happens coz where I'm from, most people are scared of big dogs.
I was wondering, since you get grumpy when people invade your & your dog's space, how does your dog react to them? Does he feel your energy and get grumpy too? I hope my question isn't too forward...

Seeing Burleigh being such a little puppy but super confident and protective is just incredible!😭😭 I got an XL bully from a well known kennel in the US shipped to my country when he was about 2 years old, as a teenager, and we got him a trainer the day he arrived. He's about 160lbs now but super fearful and nervous about everything and I really mean everything like toys, collars, leash, his own couch, of course other people, dogs, sounds and scents. Scared of taking shower, scared of dryer, even scared to pee or poop if there's a bug.... and has 0 food drive so treats never worked sometimes even won't eat his food for no reasons. Always runs away and tries to hide his big ass when got scared... My trainer and now my family takes him out twice a day every day for at least 2 hours no matter the weather or time just to socialize and desensitize. He's been with my family for almost a year and he made 0 progress still the biggest coward...

Omg please more videos like this. What a good boy. Love getting to see his behavior real time. Your silence while watching and evaluating his behavior gives me the listener time to do my own thinking and evaluating independently. You then follow up with your proffesional advise and opinion, polishing off my internal commentry. Love getting to see his behavior. I personaly rather train a puppy like Burleigh who's a "bossy puppy" with playful confidence than one who is timid, seems like a blast. Keep being patient, you are doing such a good job. No Bad Dogs.😍🥰🤩

13:38 This video was great! I have a mastiff mixed with boxer and he is the most stubborn dog I've ever owned! I've had him 2yrs now and he barks at everything. I chocked it up to just being vocal initially but being that he still does it, concerns me. He barks at things he's afraid of, likes and may be intimated by. Dogs and kitty's 😏 Due to health issues unfortunately I wasn't able to socialized him around other pups as much as I wanted too. Where do I go from this point? I've tried just about everything 😔 Again thanks Tom for all you do! I wish you'd come to the east coast soon 😊

My Boerboel boy was a bit different as a puppy out socialising. Loved meeting people and was very submissive when meeting other dogs. Was not scared of them but as a big puppy he seemed to know that his size may have been intimidating. Was happy to play rough and box with bigger dogs and others that matched his play type. We did have a couple of bad reactions from other dogs who's owners wanted to interact . He even now at almost 3 has never tried to be dominant even when playing with his best mate, a male Irish Wolfhound, however at around 2 years the submissive side turned off when meeting new dogs and any aggression shown was met with a definite show of force. He will still usually just ignore all the typical small yappy aggressive dogs . Love the breed and the way they can just change from the outside their yard socialising mode to back home in protection mode.

My GSD puppy is 10 weeks old. He doesn’t seem too playful with me or happy when I come back home from work. He stays in his crate with water and AC while I work but I always come home on my lunch from 12 to 12:45 and walk him, feed him, and try to get him to play with me. I work from 7:45 to 4:30 and I always feed and walk him early in the morning before I have to go to work to try and tire him out a little and stretch his legs. He eats 3 times a day and I always keep him some cold water since he drinks quite a bit. Idk he just doesn’t seem to be too playful with me or happy to see me. He listens to commands when he wants too but also tends to just ignore me sometimes. He does fairly good with potty training. I struggle in finding the right way to correct him when he does wrong since he’s so young. I’m his only caregiver and I’m the only one he trains, feeds, and tries to play with him. Idk what to do I’m looking for any help to get my little man happy, playful and positive. All I want is for him to have the best life I can give him. (While he stays in the crate while I work, I do come home for 45 min to take care of him and walk him, he’ll only have to stay in there until he is fully house broken)

VERY helpful, thank you! This is real life. Please do more with the great explanations of why a pull vs. jerk vs 'no', vs good boy. I have a large rescue that was abused. I want him to be wary of men (I have been abused) and able to judge and accept patting when proper. Also, to see you and the dog see other dogs and how to handle it. My dog was very reactive. ( In Odin''s transfer from owner who did not want him to a shelter, he got loose. He was lost in Mexico for a while, got beaten by humans and street dogs and was starving when they finally found him. 47 lbs then to 79 lbs now) He still reacts about 1/2 the time when in the car, but seldom when walking now. Your explanation of the dogs' body language is so helpful. Thank you for your videos, Tom!

Around 10 months they are becoming adults, and if your dog was in tacked, hormones are kicking in. People forget our dogs, babies, bubbas whatever name you want to use are animals and yes they will bite if someone makes them uncomfortable, and we miss their cues.
I too refuse to have strangers pet my boy, it doesn’t benefit him and only benefits the person. Plus I’ve muzzle trained my boy, because you never know in unknown areas and the vet.

This video was so awesome!!! Seeing it out in the real world and you explaining everything right after... had my full attention the whole time... I had one of my female bloodhound pups come back at age 3.5yrs and he had never been socialized, no manners, extremely fear aggressive, n scared of everything... he spent that 3.5yrs prior in a kennel or on a chain n we were only told they didn't have the time or money to keep him and he was ruining everything... come to find out he was super skinny and showed soooo many signs of being beat... n they got a new puppy less than a month after surrendering him to us, which makes me furious... but I'm doing my best to show him love and that things aren't that scary but also setting rules and boundaries... your videos have helped me so much!!! ❤

I got my pup short after you got burleigh so it’s been so cool to watch your pup grow alongside mine. I’ve used many of your training methods and they have helped immensely. Keep giving us more of Bs progress!!! We love to see it!

More, please, yes! It's easier to see it than have it explained, great work!

Love to see this type of content: informative and fun to watch! It's also nice seeing how you correct behavior in the moment-thanks for putting this out there!

Thank you! I've rescued an adult mastiff x who will really benefit from this (and more like it).I love that you have such a nuanced approach to dog training and socialisation.

Beautiful Boerboel, i think he has inherently built in memory and thought the hose was the exact colour of a Boomslang snake,

Thankyou so much for these types of videos! I am pretty good with dog training but my weakness is reading PROPER dog body language between 2 dogs. I grew up with dog agressive dogs so I can spot a potential fight a mile away, but when it comes to really playing I have no clue where to draw the line because I'm so used to looking for a fight. My last dog was dog friendly but I still always felt tense about it. I just got a retriever puppy about a month or so younger than Burleigh, so following along your videos has been so helpful. Luckily i have a small older foster dog that i can observe their interactions and see where she draws the line because otherwise I crack down on good playful fighting and I dont want to discourage good behavior just because MY association with it is escalation to a dog fight. This knowledge is powerful, I feel a bit more confident to take my pup out on a walk to expose to other dogs now because before my biggest worry was: "but what if they want to play?! I won't know what to do?!" 😂 its silly, I know

Yesssss!!! I'm glad you expressed the true meaning and understanding the true meaning of socialization. My wife and I have been seeing Burleigh's journey as it is a HUGE help due to us planning on bringing a Cane Corso in the near future! Yes I know two different breeds however, seeing a big powerful dog as Burleigh which will be big can give us pointers on who steps to include on our agenda. Thanks for this video Tom! I hope you come down to FL and we will be able to make it. We currently own a 16week old lab and your videos again have been a huge assistance. 🤙🏾🤙🏾🤙🏾

I've found that teaching a touch and using it on new items have helped my dogs get over the hump of it. Since they know touch means food and safe, they seem to do better, and it kinda takes their mind off the new thing

I would love to see more of these! It’s so helpful to see the interactions because it can be a little tougher when you’re in the situation as it comes and trying to read it and doing the right things as a newer owner. I think this definitely better prepares you for possible outcomes and how to handle them! Thank you. ❤

Nice. You did a wonderful job at training him. Your using the interaction to your advantage. And using it to know where you are or not. 😃
