The best trainer in the world! I trained my Bernese Mountain Dog, Brodie, to be fully reliable off leash by 8 months with Tom's videos. I can't believe these lessons are availabe for free! Balanced training is the way to success folks!!!!
Amazing!
I have a Big Chunky German Shepherd × Bernese Mountain Dog 😁🐾🐶🐾
Same!! It was through e-collar training that I got my Australian Shepherd off-leash trained at 7 months old in about 1-2 weeks. To be fair, he already had a very obedient and attentive temperament, but with the addition of a little e-collar training, I felt comfortable putting away the leash. It's so nice not dealing with the hassle and stress of leashes anymore (minus the few areas they are required, of course). I will be an e-collar user for the rest of my life with dogs!
@@tomdavisofficialwhen will the next free seminar be?
which?! Falkor is hella stubborn and I've the e-collar course but I'm just not doing things right or something.. :|
I LOVE this e-collar!…I have trained my high drive Malinois on it…what an amazing feeling knowing she can be off leash on our walks in the mountains…she has been tested on bears, running deer, a cougar & all those cheeky rodents ..mice..squirrels and chipmunks..& birds.. I don’t allow her to chase…she has always recalled..I have not had to use a stim for many months now. But she wears it every walk..to me it’s a “ seatbelt “…& she loves to see it come out..she shoves her head into it…lol..👍
I have been using a dogtra e collar for about a year now and it’s used daily after watching all your videos she is totally conditioned to it perfectly. I got it because she is so well trained but her prey dive crazy
Yesterday I had to use the boost for the very first time after she took off after some dogs whilst off leash and she turned and came straight back to me
I could have cried I was so happy. Thank you for all the advice
L
are the e collars send shocks or vibrations?
This is awesome thank you! I have a dog who used to be able to be off leash but he’s very prey driven and started taking off after wild life. I’ve been considering getting a e collar for him to learn to be able to be off leash again and hearing about others successes is very encouraging!
@@isabellemcgeachie663 good luck with the collar it will change you and your dog’s relationship for the better 🤞 the best advice I can give is make sure you condition your dog to the collar, like shown in Toms videos and your dog’s reactions to your commands will be almost instant 💕
@@ahoerauf94 The collar has both vibrate and I suppose you can call it shock but you don’t have it that high that it shocks them, it feels more like a tingling sensation
E-Collars are a godsend. They are illegal where I live (prong collars too), and highly frowned upon. I got one anyways (about a year ago), and using many of your videos to learn about them, and it has turned my dog (Staffy/shar pei mix) into an absolute gem. Best trained and behaved dog (by miles) where I live.
People can say what they want, this tool is damn near mandatory if you have a dog that isn't a "pleaser" and you want proper off leash control ♥
Illegal and totally misunderstood where I am too. You got lucky to find one to use. I'm pleased for you.

If I could send you the snapchat video of our boy walking offleash with the wife's parents and dog I would. If you would have told it would have only taken these 4-6 months to get him from wanting to remove another dogs head at over 200 yds to being less than 2 feet away with not a care in the world i would have called you nuts. E-COLLAR AND TOM DAVIS'S training videos have allowed us to train our LGD Sarp to not only be a companion, but to work doing what the breed is suppose to do, but with control and clear direction/purpose. He was a lost soul when we rescued him, but he has new life and it is glorious!!!
Burleigh is huge! He’s such a good boy and very handsome! And Lakota is the best big sister!
Thank you Tom for educating the world about E collars because my dog loves the freedom of being off leash. There’s not a day in world that he doesn’t want to put it on because it means he can be free.
Love his floppy ears and he runs back to you 😍
Too cute
I’m a new subscriber to your channel but I have to say your videos have been so great for me. I am planning on getting a puppy in the next few months and as a first time dog owner, your videos make me feel way more comfortable
I am force free dog trainer, but I’m not doing any videos yet. The funniest part for me at that RUclips rivalry between force free and balanced dog trainers, I have only seen force free trainers doing their videos inside home or facility with their highly trained border collies. Balanced trainers have on leash off leash videos at public
something else you will NEVER see positive only trainers handling is out of control dogs that try to bite.... been watching for years, and not once have I seen even ONE. LOts of talk, no action... only the balanced trainers are able to handle every dog. As for me, I am a balanced trainer, because my 23 pound mutt mix taught me positive only does not work in the real world...

I got this collar and I love it show much when it got lost in the woods I bought it again. I wasn't pleased and I looked for it for hours, luckily the remote was around my neck I don't know how it came off the dog, but e collar training meant I never even noticed it come off because my dogs recall is so good!

Thanks so Very much for this video.
I was reading one of the other commenters about how she used the e-collar because her dog took off after another dog.
Newly adopted 2 yr. Old Lab mix has prey drive. I can't feel safe if she spots a squirrel. I found out when she dragged me down!
I really admire you and your training.
I've hired a trainer who seems to use some of those trading methods.
Thank you so much Tom Davis❤
Good video. Tom is great. I bought his E-collar program and it is well done just like the video. Though I am having some issues with the one dog who is very nervous. We started training outside and had more distractions so I turned it up a bit but maybe too much so now he just shuts down and is miserable whenever I put the collar on him. Unfortunately haven’t got too much customer assistance but this video and all the comments encourage me to keep trying. I got it because they are super reactive to other dogs and very prey driven and if I’m walking them together they completely lose their mind. I’ve tried slip collars and prong but they still go at it. I’ll keep watching Tom’s great videos and keep at it. I was encouraged he took the long line off. They both seem to stumble over it when training and the nervous one doesn’t trust it at all. Took me a while for him to even get used to it enough to train.
Hi Tom, your videos have enlighten me! Just wanted to say thanks, my pup Aspen (Samoyed) and I are having the time of our lives. I’m not on my journey from a full time event producer to a dog trainer!
Hi Tom. I realize you have a ton of people messaging you but I hope you see this. I have done the conditioning of my GSD/Husky SD over the span of about 6 weeks. My method was to show the dog the collar then reward for about a week or so once or twice a day at the same time of day. The next step was to put it on the dog, reward, leave it on for 15 to 20 min while doing on leash work then remove it twice a day for a week. During this time i did the occasional vibrate or tone when off and reward. She reacted very well to it. I learned the hard way how tight the collar has to be for the sensation to get to her skin. On top of this, going by recommendations i have researched (a lot of videos including yours) I tried at a level 5/6 on a bousnic collar only to find that it hurts her. She yelps at that level. I very carefully move her hair out of the way to make a good contact but find that a level 1 or 2 gets a significant reaction out of her. For this I am working on the vibrate for a recall which is working ok.
I am continuing to work with her with the sensation and im using that part for a recall when she is very distracted (I still have a bunch to do with her on that). Is it normal for some dogs to have an extreme reaction at that low level. I have tried it at a 10/12 for the extreme distraction (once only) but her reaction is a very loud yelp and cower which I really do not like. I am going to be implementing the bungy cord update to the click collar and im considering the other 'extended' contact leads we see on amazon.
Thanks
What brand are you using? a lot of ecollars can be painful if cheaply made or not many levels.
@@GuideDogBambi bousnic collar. I have the dual receiver on. It is a very highly recommended collar.
Sounds like your eCollar's lowest levels are not low enough to establish what Tom calls a "working level".
Tom, Burleigh has those eyes that look right into your soul. 😍 He is so adorable and getting so big! Another well explained and executed video! Well done, Tom! Have a Blessed Night 😊🐶🐶
Thanks so much for this video. It’s reassuring to see that no dog is perfect. Just starting e-collar use now, and very excited
Tom. Thanks to your videos I have learned a lot. Even though only 1 of my dogs is doing very good on the e-collar, I am enjoying free and happy dogs now in less than a month.
Update: 3 months into the training 2 of mt dogs are doing great. It has been awesome.
As a South African (where the Boerboel originates from) it is actually pronounced Boo ( like a ghost ) - rrr ( like a growl ) - bull
Woah thanks! I had no idea thats where they originated :)
I always thought shock collar where the worst until my dad's friend who was a trainer explained it and showed it to me. I then trained my older chocolate lab, her sister and my dads 2 germans shepherds to understand it and I was able to off leash walk all 4 of them together. I used to go hiking with them and it was such a life saver. I recently adopted a German shepherd/husky mix and i trained her as well and I am able to off leash walk her anywhere and everywhere and everyone who sees is is completely mind blown at how well she is and that I never have her on leash. They always comment that they wish there dogs would be able to do that and they think I'm magical or she's just a super amazing dog (well both of those are true 😂) but the e-collar is what made it all possible. Now I just adopted a puppy yesterday morning, he walks off leash and follows me as it is since he's so young and just wants to be around me but I know once he's older and has more control of his own mind and goes into that "teenager" phase, I know the e-collar is going to allow that fully and condition him for a lifetime of excellence.
Try explaining that to Zak George
Zak george litterly doesnt even try to train agressive dogs because he knows he cant. There are good positive only trainees out there (kikopup as an example) but zak george is garbage. He's only good for teaching puppies. My reactive Chihuahua never got better with his methods. So i do balanced dog training instead.
Using electronic collars to reasonably regulate the behavior of dogs can help train dogs and correct some bad behaviors of dogs. Similarly, professional and standardized electronic collars will not harm dogs. Sometimes you can try to use electronic collars and other related products to help you train your puppies.☺☺☺
Tom, another fantastic video! Regarding the Dogtra e-collar levels, it may be necessary to adjust them depending on the dog, the distractions, or the situation to regain or break the dog's focus from external distractions. For instance, recalling dogs with a particularly high prey drive may require higher levels. This is ofcourse after conditioning.
I absolutely love this channel and I would love to use the E collar, but where I live they are completely illegal :(
These videos have been SO helpful to me and really changed my mind on different training tools and methods.
If you happen to see this Tom, I would love to know if you have any advice for people who live in places where E collars are illegal?
If anybody else has any advice, I would love to know!
You can buy covers for both an e-collar and a prong collar.
@@Miadiablo thank you for your reply. I have considered this, however the penalties for the use of a prong collar are quite high over here, technically you could be fined for 20.000 euros and have a conviction for animal abuse on your record. Though in practice it's very unlikely the fine would be that high, but the animal abuse charge is what really worries me. It's incredibly sad that prong collars are so misunderstood :(
I would love to e-collar train ours for those situations in which distractions are just too great or rewarding to rely on our 'usual' recall, but unfortunately our government banned e-collars two years ago.. Hoping we'll get there with 'regular' training.
Hey Tom thank you so much for the awesome Video!! It’s been helping me out so much with my Cane Corso. Could you add the e-collar link? I don’t see it so I think you forgot to add it

This is a great video! Off leash looks like fun. However, there are so many communities where dogs off leash is illegal! It's also illegal to use a long line, 6 foot leash is required. Thanks for sharing!
My nine-month-old chihuahua is 1.7 KG's haha. I'd love to see Burleigh with her and their size difference! (I also live south of Burleigh Heads (In NSW) and love how you guys named him Burleigh!).

I'm also training my dog of 1.5 years old now with a E collar. And I got to say I love how you "gain" control so much better in some situations.
The only situation I cant handle is other people looking at me like I"m a bad dogowner cause I use a "Shock" collar.
Any trick on that you can give me? Any tips on what I can say to those people? Cause all I say now is "never mind" and I move on, or just nothing at all. :)

My toy poodle! And it worked so well, he's also agility-trained. do you have an e-collar that will work with him he's 12lbs.
So helpful...thank you.
Hey Tom where’d you get burleighs martingale from I love it?
I have a question, I just took in a 6 month old American Bulldog mix Stafford, he has a history of burn wounds because of the electric shock collar. He's already had 3 different owners before me and I'm kinda scared to use a e-collar now as it might have caused trauma. He probably will be a very big 70 kilo dog. Atm we are working on obedience training, and he reminds me a lot of your new pupper, very playful but also still has so much to learn and he's very stubborn. What will be my best approach in this?
Hey Tom, do you just purely use the vibrate function when training?
Love your videos 🐶
My dog ran into the streets and would go after motorcycles. Literally got into a guys truck as he was trying to get her out of the street.
I had no choice but to try a collar. I fought it. It wasn’t a multifaceted tool like you have. It definitely had a stinging sensation as I tried it on myself. Wasn’t pleasant but I turned it up just enough. I probably had to use it 3-5 x over the course of 6 months and she became the best off leash dog. I wish I had known about these collars at the time but either way I believe it saved my dogs life. And I did walk her on leash mostly, this was only when she was in certain areas.
People who abuse animals, I imagine, that most have other ways in which they harm them, POS’s.
My Corso's love the tone of me turing on their collars because it represents fun training in the front yard.
I don't trust my ignorant neighborhood that have delusions that they can step on driveway so they aren't hit by a car because they are too lazy to cross the street that has a great crosswalk & bike lane.
Stepping in my driveway is considered trespassing to my Corso's as they know where the property line ends at street. Plus, a senior neighbor sometimes comes over he is dog owner but, never thinks to look if the dogs are with me.
I have e-collars on mine because of ignorant stupid people when I am gardening out front.
Tom- Does your E-collar do 1-remote for 2 collars? I want to upgrade, but I need to have 1 remote/2 collars.
Not sure about the Tractive but the mini educator allows you to have 2 collars on 1 remote :)
Hey... so I got a couple of the 2 dog models from Educator Mini & from Dogtra, the Arc & the T&B 2 dog models.
Get them directly from Dogtra & Educator, because I had issues with the case cracking & letting in water on the controller with the one I got from a reseller.
I prefer the ones that have separate buttons & locking the stim & boosted levels for each dog.
Sometimes I would have preferred getting single dog versions, but my roommate's preference won with these.
The other thing I love, the original batteries lasted 2-3 years with daily charges & both companies sell replacement batteries & parts to repair broken parts.
When should you use the page button on the remote collar? We have a 13 month old English Cream Golden and got the Tom Davis remote collar to aid in the training and want to be sure we are using it correctly. So far she doesn’t seem to even react unless the collar is set to at least 18! Is that normal?
At what age do you recommend getting one for the dog?
Is it okay to leave the e-collar on your dog throughout the day? Or should you only be having it on the dog during training sessions?
Will you be doing protection training with him?
Do you use the remote to go to dog parks? Does it works there? My dog loves going to dog parks and playing with other dogs, I’m wandering if this will work if another dog gets aggressive with him (my dog never have had a fight but he’s a year now and I’m afraid at some point he’ll get into one). Ps: in the area I live the only way to have my dog off leash is if I’m at a dog park
What do you think about the warnings that any type of electrical field can cause seizures in dogs?
Never heard of it.
Thay are soo cute
What breeder did you guys use if you don’t mind me asking?
Hi!
Is the collar waterproof? Can the dog swim with it?
Yes
Is the collar specifically for recall or to get their attention for another command?
The video answered my question.
I am not a fan of the crate you shouldnt crate a boerboel its not really good for them rather use a place board a rhodesian ridgeback and a bowrboel are not dogs for cities unless you have enough space your a great trainer. Im South African i live on s farm and own a Rhodesian ridgeback i cant ever imagine crating him or a boerboel these are working dogs they need space they need to be worked and i totally disagree with crating dogs unless you dont have options like military and police dogs that travel far or dogs that travel often
The reality is, that what you call a 'working dog' can be someone else's lap dog. Do you see how happy the dog is? I dont think he minds.
The purpose of crating dogs, is safety; it is so they do not kill themselves or something while you are busy doing something and cannot provide oversight.
Hi Tom, Burleigh is so damn cute 😍, if you have anymore videos with him, pretty please post it
Tom, off topic but I wanted to get the type of elevated dog bed you use. I followed to your Amazon link and It says max weight 85lbs. Can you lead me to one that can handle a 135lb Rottweiler made with safe chemicals. Thanks for your training videos, they’ve been a huge help.
I still don't think it's needed for every dog off-leash. Like I've mentioned before, after 9 years of dog walking off-leash, I would say only about 5 dogs needed the e-collar.The other ones totally always came back when I called them. I also used the long leash when training puppies and found that best for the same reason you mentioned - giving the illusion of being off-leash without actually being off-leash.
I’m just here to show people how to do e collar training properly.
So what, if it is not needed.
It's a wonderful new technology capable of transmitting the RIGHT and NEEDED information to the dog through space in the right time.
I does no harm to the dogs, if used right. Why do people think, that it is preferrable, that the dog hits the end of a 20 yard long leash, after going for another dog or an animal?
Everybody should learn to use it, even for the most sensitive dogs, because if used right, even they prefer it.
Dog trainer for decades here.
Best invention after the dog leash.
@AnimaTriste I'm not saying anything negative about the E-collar - I just myself don't think it's needed for every dog off-leash. As a dog walker, walking 6 dogs off-leash every day, there is also no way I could control all of them with each wearing e-collars so I had to have the knowledge that they respected me as their leader and came when I called with no exception.
@melodieramsay655
I walked even more dogs off leash. And some of them would go after each other throats if I'm not present.
That the dogs must respect you goes without saying, and you have to work it until there.
But...
I know that you like to think that you are special, but dog walkers in particular don't have experiences with real difficult dogs.
I know the clientele, they don't care about their dogs. Normally, they don't train them and even hire someone to take them for a walk.
But that's not the point, either.
The point is that it should be used with EVERY dog because it can learn faster, more humane and efficient until it respects you.
What a cool dog ❤️❤️❤️
E collar is essential in dog training

@@saschahesselink2803I’ve always had 100% recall with my dogs without using one, they weren’t around in the 60s when I started training. ⚠️ Bro No! Don’t take this vid with a grain of salt, take it with a TON of salt - (1) Burleigh’s Personality/Soul is a Gentle Giant. Less likely to become reactive, and hurt another person or dog that unexpectedly runs out of nearby house. (2) Most ppl don’t live in a high end excluded neighborhood. (3) Most ppl who get Big Dogs go for the Alpha Male Personality that has high reactivity/protection drive.
(4) Tom is an Advanced Trainer multi-tasker who has made sure no one is down the road, has his eyes scanning the houses, probably knows his neighbors schedules and ppl aren’t dashing out. (5) PLUS he is physically fit that if his pup becomes reactive to a kid dashing out, Tom can run 🏃🏻 and step on the long lead before pup can get to child. Dogs are WAY faster than ppl think/plan. (6) Too many ppl are getting Beast of Bred dogs that they physically can not handle, and get under control before another person or dog is attacked or terrorized. (7) Too many ppl take their pups off leash too soon, “we ask ourselves can we do this and never ask should we do it.” #DontDoThisAtHome
What do you feed him?
Raw diet
Would the collar still be effective on a level 4 with a long/two coat dog like a Malamute?
That would depend on a few factors:
1. BOTH contact points must touch the skin, so if you don't have contact points that can reach through the thick coat to the skin, then even the highest level will never be felt by your dog.
2. Every dog needs a different level. It simply depends on how physically sensitive they are. A sensitive dog will respond to a 4, but a more physically tough dog (like mine) might need a level 25 before they even notice it.
So, if you have good contact with the skin and a sensitive Malamute, then yes, a 4 might work. In my experience, though, Malamutes are very tough and stubborn, so I would not be surprised if they need a bit more than a 4.😅
Anyone know the name of the black collar Tom has on his dog? Just below the e collar
What do you use to award them for a command, I don’t know if I should use treats or just dog food
Dog food is fine.

I wish the e-collar wasn't a criminal offence in my country.
My border collie will just blow me off when she is sniffing a sent or chasing birds.
So she isn't allowed to be off leash at all in poorly fenced area.
I have used every positive reinforcement method I could find.
I have done the go get method but if the space is to big she will just keep running in circles I have done long line corrections but once the lead is off it usually only takes 10min then we are back to playing catch me if you can.
Also side not she has snapped 2 longlines when she got over stimulated by birds flying overhead and if she saw other dogs.

I bought that e-collar. No bad dogs collar. Exact same one. 15:01 It does the same as all the $25-$50 collars except for the continuous, but the no bad dogs one doesnt have warning sound feature that I do like. Also mine doesn’t make a sound as your does while on continuous. The no bad dogs collar seems very weak. My mastiff is fairly trained, off leash he is great alone, it distraction training that he needs. That collar can be on full power and he will ignore it. But the $25 collar he turns and recognizes it.
That said the no bad dogs collar stopped working and needs to be charged every few hours. I’ve had it less than a year. They wanted me to jump through loops and pay to send it back to get fixed, refused to send me a new one or even a return package. For $300 it does the same as the $25-$50 collars I’ve bought…
That said Tom your one of the best trainers I’ve followed. I’ve learned a lot and I use your methods quite a bit. I will always follow your videos. They are great
The sound you are hearing is a sound box he is using so viewers know that he is touching the button. I have the same model since its launch, no issues with having the need to. Charge it after a couple of hours. Sounds like you received a defective one.
You should have gotten the mini Educator. Great brand.
I think e collars are illegal in my country. Looks like a good tool though :/
how does a clicky sound cause your dog to listen? mine ignores it
I have a cane Corso that moves very slowly. I noticed that Burleigh seems to have similar movement. Is that a mastiff thing?
Yes it is.
Yep lol, I have 2 bandogs and they’re both pretty slow compared to a GSD or border collie though doing lots of training when they’re young can make sure they’re solid with commands :)
I’ve been conditioning my 6MO puppy to the (Dogtra No Bad Dogs) e-collar for the last couple of weeks at home with no issues and good progress. Finally went out to the park with it and unfortunately it faulted out and produced a much higher continual stim than it was set to. Unfortunately I didn’t notice until I went to pet my puppy and felt the static almost surrounding my pup’s head and it shocked us both. I’m not sure how if it was just a momentary issue or it had been an issue but even after shutting it off it took about 10sec. to stop having a high staticky sensation. Thankfully Dogtra is replacing the collar and sending it to their engineers to inspect but now I have to work on conditioning her to be okay with it again (she’s fearful of it now) and she’s going into avoidance where the event occurred. Any advice on getting her okay with it again?
Remote collar link?
Does the collar have that noise which I like I hope so. I’m sure it must because how could he be doing it if it’s not included in the collar
the noise is not part of the collar. the noise is to demonstrate to us viewers when he is activating the collar to recall the dog. watch some of his older videos.
Oh, but I love the noise because that tells me exactly if I’m on queue about giving the dog the stem at the correct time. How did he do that? I would do that myself. Is that something hard?
@@watchmoivies123 Just let go of the button.
@@elleroberts765 oh but the noise for sure would be the exact perfect time and I love perfect timing,
Is this a Borebole puppy?
Yea
I have an e collar and my Aussie could care less. Could it be the fur is in the way for him to feel it? Trust me it does work cause I put it on myself. I've tried vibration and shock and all he does is shake his head and continue to not listen, he is 5 months old
He’s telling you it’s not working😢
Does he know the commands before you introduce the collar? If not, try the videos from this channel about this puppy's earlier training.
It sounds like he may not understand what to do in response to the sensation.
When I trained my Aussie at 7 months old, I would apply gentle stim while pulling him towards me on a long-line, and then stopped the stim when he committed to coming all the way to me, and gave him a treat when he reached me. After a few repetitions of this on the walk, I would apply the stim without leash pressure, and he would turn towards me all on his own and come to me for his treat, because he remembered that's what I've been guiding him to do after he felt it. At that point, I started to say "come" in conjunction with the stim, until I noticed he would respond to the "come" command before I hit the stim at all.
Nowadays, he responds immediately to "come" off-leash, and if he happens to be too distracted or too far away to hear me, I apply that stimulation again and it snaps him out of his distraction to come running. Usually he works at 35, and I've never had to go higher than a 45 to snap him out of something, but every dog is different.
Once your Aussie is reliable with recall ON a long-line, THEN you can start working off-leash. My guess is you went fully off-leash too quickly, and your dog doesn't understand the communication you're trying to give through the collar.😅
@@adventurousdoglover trust me it works cause I tried it on myself
@@farmerastronaut9804 yes he does know the commands. He knows come, sit, stay he knows heal but not verbal word heal if he starts getting ahead of me I make sure to say his name and make eye contact. He does really good with the prong collar
My dog is better off leash than on leash...work in progress
An e-collar is only abuse if you use it as a weapon of abuse
Are you developing an expandable version of your dog collar so you can control multiple dogs with it?
Working on it :)
Why "Come" as opposed to "Leave It" when he was digging?
Either would work. Two different behaviors. For me I wanted him to get away from the hole rather than stop.
@@tomdavisofficial Thanks for the response, just curious.
I’ve tried conditioning with this e collar at a level 3 but my dog is so sensitive. Level 3 she reacts by shaking her head as if she’s been bit by a fly. Level 2 she doesn’t respond. Any boosting and she yelps
What collar do you have?
@@Marciminks that’s why it’s a tool not used for every dog because of the adversity it can cause like this
