Tom, if you’re reading this man, you are absolutely incredible! Your ability to communicate and articulate animal behavior and teach is seamless and flawless. You just really get it and these dogs are so fortunate to have you advocate for them. I’m an animal nurse technician in the veterinary field for 5 years now and developed an interest for specializing in animal behavior after obtaining a fear free certification. Then I suddenly came across your videos and completely aligned with your approach. Thank you for advocating for these guys and really educating people. There is so much I’ve learned with your videos that I can take with me to work and educate those around me and remind people there are “NO BAD DOGS” I’ve always believed that as well. Keep doing what you do 🙏🏽
@@samwdavis, and I disagree with you. This redirection ( toy/ play/treat) method apparently worked with this dog. The dog had more positive association with the stimuli before those triggers vs negative associations with those triggers. Negative/ corrections with a reactive dog can and do sometimes cause the dog to be more aggressive. Each dog is different and not every technique works for every dog.
Great comments both, shows how variable the answer is. Would have been great to see both styles to see the reaction. I guess it's always best to start with redirection, treat and then progress to correction if no results are seen in real world scenarios.
Creature and his owner are going places! You can tell he actively listens and absorbs what Tom is explaining and showing, and wants to do the absolute best for Creature. Love seeing engagement from both the dog and the owner!
My purebred rescue working line GS is choosing to listen, sit, and ignore dogs both on walks, and passing fence when she's loose in backyard. She now looks to me for direction now and comes when called. Hotdogs are a favorite treat. 😁She used to lunge, spin, growl and just come unglued. I have learned so much from you, Tom. And I am so grateful! She's a gem with people, but was so dog aggressive --it was a grave concern after she slipped out of the front door and bit a dog and wouldn't release.. I love her and am devoted to keeping her safe as well as others. She is smart, loyal and such a delight!! She is living the good life now.❤❤❤
As someone in the vet field, I cannot explain how helpful these videos are. I cannot even count the amount of animals we’ve had brought in to our hospital for euthanasia because of “aggression” that ends up in signing owner rights to us for us to train and find the perfect home for or sometimes even just helping the owner find places to go for training and widening their mindsets on owning an animal. I always recommend this channel not just for training, but the explanations you give for why a dog is reacting to certain things in certain ways. Love love love this!! ❤️
This is the kind of dog I love to pull from the shelter. Oh the things you can do with a little understanding and training. He could literally do anything from dock diving to search and rescue. What a little diamond the owners have uncovered with your help Tom! I'm so glad you guys were connected and now Creature and his people will be able to have a more fulfilling life. Thanks for sharing!
It's the people not the animal..but good way to think..........he needs to train these people not the animal...this dog didn't understand how to play even...a dog like this gets close to mine and it wouldn't be good
Just a high-drive dog that needs a "job." Breeders select for that drive and owner focus he's got in his obedience - he just needs the outlet, like you said.
I totally agree. As a trainer, when you see a dog like this, everything changes. I love a good, motivated working breed. Working with one now and its such a challenge, because she also redirects. Its honestly just like this video, having to try so many new things and continually problem solve on the spot because of the redirection. But in doing so you find such amazing dogs out of it. Who knew how motivated this dog was!!? Nice video, Tom!
I didn’t know until this video how much of the science behind the terrier mindset I had been missing. Dogs like Creature (and my own) really can be such a different experience. You remind me regularly that each dog is different and has its own journey. Thank you. You remind me there are always ways to celebrate with my dog.
Love this episode! The owner stepped up to the responsibility on training his dog and he really listened well to Tom's guidance. Tom, your understanding of dog behavior wow.
This is the first time I have seen a dog as reactive as my dog is. He is 14 mos he does his obedience work off hand signals beautifully until another dog shows up. Today he got past the first dog pretty good, but blew up on the next two. He doesn't bark and growl any more but like Creature it is hard to get his focus on me. I have tried what this video teaches and things are getting better. He was 8 mos old when I got home and treated badly which is why I have him now.
I really respect the owners for taking responsibility and sticking through it with this dog. A lot of people would've said no this dog is too much, and he wouldve ended up in a shelter. People tend to think reactivity is pure dog aggression and its not. This is by far my favorite video Tom has done. It really shows how misunderstand pitties are and how great they can be. They really really want to do good. They just need a little guidance to funnel it into the right direction.
Tom, I appreciate your channel so much, and all you do to help these dogs. In our town, a pit bull, owned by a complete idiot, bit a neighbor dog. Police were called. Owner paraded the dog out in front if officers who had guns out and dog cornered, then she released the poor dog. He went to bite the officer's ankle and pop pop ( local media actually posted the body cam video which is abhorrent). The whole town seems to be rejoicing. I know the officer didn't have a choice it happened so fast, but the glee of the people that another pit has a bullet in him, is so upsetting to me. No mercy, no sadness, no compassion. Unbelievable. Local social media news outlet posting jokes and memes about it. I guess the best I can do is just be thankful that's not where my heart is. Such an ugly ugly way to be. If only you could save them all :). You're the best. You're admiration for the dog in this video is really sweet.
A SMART DOG, A RESPONSIBLE OWNER AND A WISE/PASSIONATE TRAINER CREATE A HAPPY LIFE FOR A HAPPIER DOG !!! THIS IS ABSOLUTELY, THE BEST - WHOLESOME !!!!!
Education wise, probably the most helpful video I've seen for me personally speaking. I have a Catahoula with a very high prey drive. Having the rope ball example was great, I need to try that with my boy. Many of the things done here I need to try!
I also have a Catahoula, also with very high prey drive, very similar to my last dog which was a terrier mix. It’s challenging for sure, especially when you see the neighbour’s dog across the street just sit and watch the bunny hopping by and yours is going crazy! Videos like this are so helpful. Good luck with your Catahoula. 👍
My staffy x puppy also has a high prey drive, and she is very intelligent and responsive to training. 💖 Terriers are a special type of dogs, and while persistent (stubborn 🤦🏻♀️) they are incredibly loving and loyal, and trainable. 😊
I've been watching your videos to learn how to tain properly my 1 yr old pitbull. I adopted her in June at 1 yr old. She is a good girl I just can't stop her from jumping on people when she is excited to see anyone.
Yay I made it! I haven’t watched the video yet but just wanted to say thanks for giving us great content. You’ve helped me raise the greatest dog I’ve ever owned and I’m using my new skills and knowledge to raise my newest pup
I haven't been around a dog quite that intense, so I am very impressed by the transition! Breaking down the the training into such small increments helped both the owners and the dog. Tom, your instinctive training for each individual situation never ceases to amaze and inspire! Great job one everyone's behalf!
Thank you for confirming terriers are challenging to teach. My 12 pounder is fine with tricks, but the OVER reaction with other unknown dogs can be maniac. So frustrating!
I love that you are using "magnetic hand" or what you called "contact obedience". I used that with my reactive dog when I first started working on his leash reactivity around his triggers. The perfect solution to teach him to pay attention to me because I'm much more valuable than the dog or kid or bike passing us. Now we can cross the street away from his triggers and use "look at me" with treats being given every few steps while he maintains eye contact with me 😊 super useful tool!
My 30 lb Terrier mix (so many different ones that he's a real Heinz 57) is prey and food driven. I gain control of him when he keys in on a cat with an "OUT!" beef liver treat. Same with other dogs. Now he seems to be selective with dogs in that most he wants to play with. I'm saying full tail wag so fast and hard his whole body will shake but there are some dogs that he wants to go after aggressively. Deep, chest growl and challenge. I redirect him with "OUT!" and a beef liver treats when he makes eye contact with me while also turning and walking in the other direction. Once he's back (a nice stress shake and/or a good heel) we'll circle back and try to pass again while I tell him out when he starts to redirect and a beef liver treat when he either continues with me or looks at me while we're walking. These are all different things I learned by watching these videos.
Literally my dog down to the White heart-shaped chest and socks she's just a brindle and does like to tug but can't get her to focus on a toy but using Focus with treats and touch have been a game changer!
My girl gets 10 minutes every day to "kill" her raggy ball. It is a must to keep her calm. Off topic. Loving your socks Tom : ) good owner here who is really listening.
This is a great video! Creature is so lucky to have owners that are willing to take responsibility and properly train him. Tom, you are an incredible trainer!
Stunning just stunning. The instinctual motions of Creature was incredible. And then watching the building block of the training being added off that foundation. Chefs kiss. Awesome
bro once tom got a hold of him and started using the tug and taught the drop it i was like holy shit this dog has amazing drive and could do so much more than he is and hes so damn quick
This dog reminds me so much of my family's new dog, even looks wise. I think she got the potential to be not just a good dog, but a perfect dog with the right training, and yet we're struggling so much because of her reactivity.
I tell everyone I meet who's having doggy issues to check you out! Reactive dog or not, your first lesson is obedience and confidence which every owner needs and is at the forefront of almost any problem!
You are good, Tom, but that was one of the best owners I've seen on your channel. He picked up on what you were saying and doing right away. Good job! 🙂
I got my rescue, Harper, one month ago. She is exactly like this handsome boy. A pitbull. They are very much alike. Thank you for doing this video for the rescue pitbull parents out here. And bringing awareness that pitbulls are intense and very much trainable ❤ This kept me inspired 🙌 I will not and have notngiven up on my girl but seeing this video 😊 Saving it... to remind me on the hard days. Much appreciated 🙏
For some reason this is my favourite video out of all of them. Toms love affair with creature and the owners ability to listen to what tom says and just do it instantly are brilliant. The impact this has on creatures behaviour is brill.
What a beautiful dog. So many hate the breed or assume being terrier behavior indicates viscousness. Thank you for highlighting and showing his potential.
Thanks Tom for this video. I have an amstaff that’s exactly the same way. I could say you were training my dog in this video. 😂 Great awesome tips. You’re so good at your job. I appreciate the videos you put out. Great help.
That was fantastic, Tom. My Benny is also reactive and has redirected to me several times. I have not found Benny to have any sort of Toy drive but he is very food motivated. Great job with Creature!!
Creature is my dog's clone! My 3 yr. old is APBT + American Bully. His sister/littermate was so prey driven that after giving up on the dog park, broke through from the back seat barrier, out the front window to attack a small dog on a leash. Her owner made a quick decision to have her euthanized that day....We had rescued both pups at 2 WEEKS of age, bottle fed them and loved them immensely.....I can hardly think about her without crying....My friend is 70 and just didn't stop to think of training, muzzling, etc....This video lets me see how much further my dog can go...and how far he's gone because of following Tom for almost 3 years!
I love the information about breed type behaviours (terrier, shepherds, etc). It really helps me understand the root of the behaviour to compliment and understand the reasoning behind the training method. Thank you for taking the time to explain. Knowledge is power!
Creature is amazing. I had an Amstaff for 14 years he showed the same willingness to work and was great at anything we trained for. (Obedience, agility and show). Amazing dog and great owners.
I just have to say, I've learned so much from watching! I was given a pup that was heading to a kill shelter, she had serious issues for a year or more, then I started watching this channel and adopting techniques that were being explained. She's become my shadow and so very sweet. It's still a bit of a trial, she loves hunting anything lil that she can catch and destroys the house when left alone at times, but wow. She's become such a sweet baby. Just saying thank you!
Hey, you found my dog's twin! So far good to know I've been doing the right things; they are at the same level, but probably won't have any play buddies until she's senile and close to her end of life but so long as she doesn't freak out anymore. Kudos to you Tom, and the owners.
i've been working with my amstaff/pitty who is so much like this. genuinely the best dog i've ever had and so smart, but SO reactive. these videos are incredibly helpful, thank you.
He is the cutest and smartest dog I’ve seen yet ! Creature is so extremely smart and aware ! The absolute best part is seeing how loving he is to his owner
This is hands down the best session Uploaded to this channel so far. (IMO!). Beautiful use and example of positive reinforcement/drive and motivational leaning balanced training where the tactile interruption and suppression of reactivity from the prong toggled between the squeaky ball and the treats had such a fast and drastic effect in just 2 sessions. Bravo. One thing I wish there was more of on this channel is a continuation/following up with these dogs once they're in home again. I could see this dog regressing and struggling with these same methods and his owners struggling to implement them once they're in their neighborhood trying to do a leash walk but I would think in just a couple of sessions similar to this 1 they would be able to generalize the training to that environment as well and it would be really cool to see.
So helpful to watch this!! We struggle with how to address intense reactivity when it comes to cats and I think this will be extremely helpful for me to work on how I address it in the future.
Making up new training material is fantastic! I love it because at one point for some reason my chihuahua got reactive to the sound of other dog collars. So I'd mimick the sound and have her focus on something else instead! I love your methods Tom, I either learn something or remember to practice something from you almost every day!
I’ve been watching your videos for the past week and I see improvement with my leash reactive dog. She’s the sweetest girl but doesn’t like other dogs or when people hover over her. I learned it starts with being confident with myself that way she doesn’t feel the need to be the protector when we are on walks.
Great training video. My ‘go to’ are both those things, the tug and the ball and rope, you need to have decently made ones or they don’t last two minutes. My dog isn’t as sharp as this one but is an Am Staff x and has a decent prey drive. Those items are our saviour for engaging my dog with me and off of other things. We do agility classes, rally-o, scent detection and fly-ball occasionally. I hope the owners find dog sports, it’s great for these dogs.
It really is so good when you know the owners are switched on and are willing to put the effort in. Creature is a beautiful dog and you can see he really wants to work and please his owners. They have a great bond.
Your videos make me smile so much and have helped me and my reactive pup too! Also this owner did such a great job during this training. His timing seemed great and his dog picked right up on it. Creature is in great hands with your guidance now!
everytime I watch your videos, part of me just wants to get up and start working with my dog, even if I currently can't rn. ^^ Your so inspiring and make it look so fun!
Great work Tom. You have shifted to the next gear with success. I can see that you are taking the best of positive training too. Combining all good stuff really works.
I see a lot of my dog in Creature. She's an Am Staff who has been more reactive since hitting sexual maturity. Videos like this one are the reason I have been able to make so much progress with her, and am able to take her on walks in public parks and into pet stores. I've been able to learn her body language, thresholds, and how to be an activate for her thanks to these videos!
He’s literally everything this breed is known for. High energy, high drive, willing to please, and super happy go lucky once you figure out the right way to speak his language. This is my favorite breed for this very reason.
Beautiful dog! The best video I’ve seen from you. It would be so much fun to train this dog. The drives that cause him to be so sharp at obedience are the same drives that make him reactive. It’s just a matter of controlling those drives as best as you can. Lovely lesson Tom.
Can't wait for the uncut version in the NBD Official Club! My dog has the exact same behavior and responds in the same way as Creature to this approach but a professional in my area keeps telling me that it's a leadership issue and that I should correct him until he submits even though it's obvious that each correction adds to his frustration... In this exact manner I've taught him to not react towards cats (it was easier because I had access to a calm cat that would not move at first) and also to not react to a fake dog (6 feet away), but completing the task seem to be very complicated as I do not have access to a real dog in order to help make the transition to real world situations. For me personally this is one of the most valuable videos on the channel! Thanks a lot and congrats on all your work!

Thats one of your best videos to date, hands down. Love from the land down under.
For some reason this is my favourite video out of all of them. Toms love affair with creature and the owners ability to listen to what tom says and just do it instantly are brilliant. The impact this has on creatures behaviour is brill.
I’ve been binge watching all ur videos dude
The change in this dog!! 🥰 Good on the owners for seeking help.
What a beautiful dog. So many hate the breed or assume being terrier behavior indicates viscousness. Thank you for highlighting and showing his potential.
i'm amazed at how intelligent this dog is. truly has so much potential and he's gonna do well
Thanks Tom for this video. I have an amstaff that’s exactly the same way. I could say you were training my dog in this video. 😂 Great awesome tips. You’re so good at your job. I appreciate the videos you put out. Great help.
Thanks so much!
One of the best clips I've seen.
Jeez this is a beautiful dog! And I love seeing how happy he is when he tugs ❤️
Loev this dog!
Can I book with you? I need help training my rottweiler puppies. They are so smart and doing really well. Just need some extra tricks
That was fantastic, Tom. My Benny is also reactive and has redirected to me several times. I have not found Benny to have any sort of Toy drive but he is very food motivated. Great job with Creature!!
wohooo! Hope this helps!
creature was so fun to watch 👍🏽 he’s such a natural
What a transformation! Beautiful dog!
Amazing dog and great owners.
that was a perfect video... I have a dog just like him!
Creature is such a beautiful and good boy! And owner is a natural!!
Okay... Well that's just too impressive. I'm blown, you're a legend 😳
Making up new training material is fantastic! I love it because at one point for some reason my chihuahua got reactive to the sound of other dog collars. So I'd mimick the sound and have her focus on something else instead! I love your methods Tom, I either learn something or remember to practice something from you almost every day!
FINALLY!!!
This is my dog EXACTLY! He has the exact same behaviors my dog has (looks like a similar breed and body-type).
Absolutely amazing dog! His parents are so lucky to have found him and what a fabulous job with the training!
This was an incredible transformation!!!! What a smart and awesome dog!!!! Also a shout out to that owner! He’s a natural 🙌🏻🙌🏻Well done
This dog has so much potential it's unbelievable. I love when you get dogs who just need a good tune up and new strategy but have a great foundation!
God, working Creature for even five minutes would fill me with so much serotonin. He’s so genuinely on point.
