I love that Tom is showing us training challenges within a house rather than the training facility because it makes it more realistic for us. Like burleigh getting off place when he heads to the door. I’d love to see the next step when he starts training with people over
Omfg the boop. I died. Must stop to boop. I love that you admit to and show us your own training mistakes. No training is better than bad training. Great advice- I’m working on my puppy’s training incrementally. Slowly leveling up and managing my expectations. Thanks for another awesome video Tom
Speaking as an old guy who has made some errors (not just in training our dogs, but in general, including professionally), some the best lessons come from errors made and overcome. The fact that you perceived and taught us about your hard lesson speaks well of you.
My Cane Corso is a year old. I really wish that I found these videos when I got Enzo at 5 months old. I guess I'm just getting experience at fixing the stuff I've done wrong. Lol
...my neighbour has a big black beauty CaneCorso & keeps it in frontyard on a really long "cable-run" a few times a day for exercise...i feel sad for him cus its all just goin crazy everytime some person or dogwalker goes past...its a very busy "rural" road but it seems to be his life experience...if only all giant doggos could have this amazin training that Burleigh is lucky to get for a life of deserved freedom & love...🤔💖🐕🐺🐼🐈💖🇨🇦
Funny watching this as it brings back so many memories. I have a 9 year old 1/2 Boerboel and 1/2 GSD (working line) and I would have to remind myself that she wasn't ready for certain challenges when she was a pup and in training. I found that for as smart as she was, she was immature and just not ready for the bigger stuff. A super good reminder about working the dog/puppy in front of us at their readiness and not ours for bigger challenges. Happy training!
Yes! It's such a mind twist when you've got a very smart dog who's still a young puppy! My GSD would pick up on things sooooo quickly but duration was a challenge - he wanted to move on to the next thing! Had to remind myself over and over that he'd get there as he matured (and he has!)
Excellent reminder of the effort needed in order to get a puppy to adulthood. It’s easy to forget the amount of time and dedication that is necessary to have an outstanding dog!
My puppy has a little nubbin' too and I always thought I was a long tail girl, but now that I have a little nubbin boy, I think it's just the cutest thing ever!!
After watching so many videos and working with my puppy then ultimately failing, I realized I expected way too much from her so we're going back to square 1 of basics and her focusing on me. Re watching these makes even more sense now, thank you
So much of your training has been massive in my world. The biggest one was changing from saying "no" to a noise. I happen to do the same "ahh ahh ahh" as you do and its brilliant. It really was a game changer. We say no for so many things its kinda silly of us to think the dog knows when its for them, and when its not.
FINALLY!! HOLY COW! THANK YOU TOM! FUR REALS! 2 years I have been asking for a video with a dog that has NOT been trained in the behavior AT ALL. I was feeling like a failure and my puppy must have rocks for brains! This is everything.
I am loving this series. I have a nine month old soft coated wheaten terrier. Her training is going so much better with these videos. Thank you so much for helping us with our fur babies.
Super video. it's so good to see the process and progress. Interestingly, we don't train the stay command at all. We expect our dogs to stay in the specific position or place until told otherwise or we give our break signal.
I love the realism in this video! this is something i had to remind myself of this a lot when i got my new dog that they werent fully trained like my older dog is, awesome work as always!
I LOVE ❤️ 💯 that you do this as most trainers only like to come off as they NEVER make a mistake. No matter how small. I respect you so much more where you simply state I just was not having a moment of clarity in the moment of distractions.
Yep made that exact mistake with my now 2yr old retriever. It's ok though, got the No Bad Dogs RUclips crew to help with the reset😊 Grateful for these videos!!
This shows who ever we are we make errors. We often forget when having older dogs, how long it took them to achieve their current standard when we have a young dog. Xx
Hey Tom I’ve just got a Boerboel puppy he’s 14 weeks and your vids are helping loads I used to have a dogue de Bordeaux sadly he passed last year only age 4 but my new puppy reminds me how stubborn mastiffs are 😂 the hard work pays off for us both tho
Currently going through this with my 15 week old terrier mix, some walks are good and she's got a nice loose leash in a low distraction area in front of the building, but the last 3 walks were a major failure due to a football tournament in our neighbourhood, causing her to be distracted and overstimulated.. Trying to socialize her and train her to not pull in the 2 short weeks ive had her has been overwhelming, Thanks for the reminder to not set my dog up to fail.
Patience..don’t expect a formal heel, let them be a puppy to explore on their walks. Beckman (I think) dog trainer says to wait until day 366 to really “put the screws” to them. Obviously it’s not cut and dried like that, you can expect short distances of not pulling, but as puppies they have to explore their world. I don’t remember what Tom’s philosophy is on this, but my GS wouldn’t even acknowledge me until I got a Herm-Sprenger prong collar, that’s one element, engagement is another element. Bring dehydrated chicken or beef cubes, pause on the walk to get engagement, reward with a tiny bit of treat when they come back to you, (always go backward away from them..this always gets them engaged to coming towards you as opposed to “chasing them down) do a few steps of formal heel while they lick at the treat in your hand, pause again in sit with them looking at you, then break and let them explore again. 15 weeks is super young..enjoy the puppyness!
Awesome video! So great to see that even a successful dog trainer makes mistakes sometimes. 10:30 I think you missed a valuable moment of him understanding “break” to know that there actually is a time when he can get off without punishment. He stayed in there for you so well even though he didn’t need to
The laundry and the covered flat surfaces is so real - thank you for being so realistic with us. Watching this sort of training with a Boerboel is so incredibly validating for me while I'm struggling with my stubborn dog with 0 food motivation.
I agree with others: it's great to watch mistakes in real time as we home dog owners/handlers need reinforcement in our techniques, to know when to correct a behavior/command and how to correct it. Love that Burleigh (spelling???). He's a huge cutie. I had a mastiff mix who lived to be about 13. Great dog.
Distractions..locations..yes. 10 months old GS, I worked so, so hard since 8 weeks, he’s great w no distractions, but when dogs, or lots of ppl are there, it all mostly goes out the window. His teenage phase is also being a problem..add in the bouts of giardia and it’s all been a challenge..
I havent had a puppy in 8 years. My english mastiff was a dram to train, it seemed as if he was born knowing everything and I barely had to train certain behaviors. I'm getting a doberman in November, and I know this puppy will give me a run for my money!
I remember training a client's Golden Retriever on the Stay command more than the Place command but same idea. I used the long leash and would step out farther and farthor and he was amazing except for when I would walk behind him and he could no longer see me - then he would break the Stay command. It was too funny - no matter what I did, he had to be able to see me - I could be 20 feet away and he would not move but if I was 2 feet away and behind him, he would have to spin around to see where I was.
Love your you and videos. Having some problems with my 1.5 yr old golden retriever pulling on break while practicing heel. Pls advise me what to do. He doesn't look at me while walking but will sitting and laying down. Doing pretty good on stay but he has a mind of his own. The WORST thing JUMPING on anyone and can't have him around kids. I know I am asking alot but I really need your help please.
I have a 2,5-3 months old Pit bull puppy and he knows sit come go bring his potty and crate trained is that too much for him? And if he sees a bigger dog he will just froze what do I do ?
Hi Tom. I am relatively new to your channel and have absolutely loved all the videos I have watched so far. I have learned so much. I do have a question in that I have a dog with Pica. She will ingest everything from plastic to stones which scares the life out of me. So I spend most of our training time outside trying to get her to stop eating everything she sees on the ground. I have been looking online for help but so far have found very little information. I want to work with her before I resort to spending thousands of dollars for the vet to do tests. Money I just don't have. She is a Mini Aussie/Collie mix. 11 months old and smart as a whip. But getting her to stop eating everything is a real challenge. She knows leave it. I can toss chicken on the floor and she won't touch it until I say ok. Sorry I know this is a little off topic to this video, but when I saw the little bit of leash hanging from her collar it made me think, nope she will just eat it! I know I'm there to stop her, however, it is a constant focus on getting her to leave it rather than using it as a correction. Hope this make sense and sorry for the comment being so long. I need help for Poppi, my sweet little girl.
What my dog during heel training doesn’t want the treat? How do I get her attention if she doesn’t want toys. It’s not very busy where I live but she gets extremely distracted and scared. What should I start off doing I have a beagle and u know what? She is extremely active
Do you have any recommendations for paying a smaller puppy? I use raw liver treats but because of my puppy’s weight it recommends only giving 6 treats a day.

Same! I can’t wait to see more. I have a puppy close to the same age. This new series is so helpful to me!
That’s exactly why I did it. No excuses for anyone after this series!
fully agreed
Excellent, thank you! So helpful
how much does he pay you to say this?
The way Burleigh keeps staring at you while you are explaining something is so cute :D
Even Tom can't resist the boop
It’s so reassuring to see the “fails”. No one is perfect.
The expectation that the new dog will behave as a previously trained dog. Was my pitfall with this dog 7 years ago when she was a puppy
“there ya go, nubs” was my favorite part lol im always a fan of those kinds of nicknames 😂
I have Rotties. We have stubbie waggles all the time. Love them.
I love how as soon as you were welcoming the ghost guests your dog got just as excited about new friends!
Omfg the boop. I died. Must stop to boop.
I love that you admit to and show us your own training mistakes. No training is better than bad training. Great advice- I’m working on my puppy’s training incrementally. Slowly leveling up and managing my expectations. Thanks for another awesome video Tom

Best trainer/dog lover there is. If you want a better relationship with your dog WATCH ALL OF THESE VIDEOS.

Thank you so much for sharing this. It really helps me remember we all make mistakes!
Thank You Tom for showing the normal imperfect process.
Look at that sweet little face and puppy eyes 🐶❤️❤️
My dogs want to thank you for giving their mom a clue hahaha!
Haha ❤ 100% true….. funny and cute… ikr. Me too 😂
Thank you Tom for these videos. It’s actually helping me with my 3 year old, I feel like I’m retraining her all over again. I really appreciate this.
B is getting so big! His engagement with you is so impressive! Well done, Tom!
I am loving this series. I have a nine month old soft coated wheaten terrier. Her training is going so much better with these videos. Thank you so much for helping us with our fur babies.
You are the best my two huskies really thank you for the good tips ❤ been working with them to be the best kids ever
Really appreciate the great, informative, and slightly more raw content.
Super video. it's so good to see the process and progress. Interestingly, we don't train the stay command at all. We expect our dogs to stay in the specific position or place until told otherwise or we give our break signal.
Love the little step by little step breakdown. Sooo helpful. Thank you, Tom.

Tom we just adopted two 13 week old lab puppies that we are training using your puppy training videos...Thank you...
THE BOOP! 😂
I missed it, when was that?
So fun watching these training videos from the get-go!!!
He's the cutest chonky boooi🥹😭✨
Love the realness of home videos!

Is that a Wolfgang collar on Burleigh? I’m thinking of getting one of there collars.
I love his nicknames already. B and Nubbs, suits him to a T

🤔 Can I do this type of training with my 1 year old dog?
I really like how clear your instructions are(!) but I can't stop thinking that there's a risk that people think "Oh a Boerboel might be a good idea." To 99.90 % of the population it's not. Even experienced dog people may get the wrong idea, that a Boerboel is an option. If I just do what Tom's doing this might work. No, it won't. They're fantastic dogs in the hands of extremly few people. I wish you'd be more explicit about that. There are many people that think "Oh what a cool dog! All that muscle, guardian instinct". Most people shouldn't deal with a dog like that. In the wrong hands it's a leathal weapon.
@vivienleigh4640 --- why would you say a Boerboel is not a good idea for 99.90% of the population? The Boerboel is a family dog, it is a very intelligent dog and yes a muscular dog, but is a great dog for owners who are experienced or owners who are willing to learn how to be a good owner to a Boerboel.
Yeah, I chose "SPOT" for my Trapper and "Place" for Zelda, since sometimes I need Trapper to "Place" where Zelda's pretty cool. For whatever reason, the FOXHOUND is the more protective than the Dutch/Mal/Lab/Pit/German/Chow/Catahoula Mix, you know the thing that is literally 83% protection breeds and only 17% Lab. And recently Trapper's been going after cycalists and vagrants, as in last year and a half. Didn't really do it much when it was just him and me, but ever since I got Zelda about that long ago, he's been super protective. Which is annoying since I can take care of myself, I live in a Gun Friendly State, have a lot of those, he's 6 years old, Zelda is 2 years old, and besides the random homeless guy here and there, the area I live in is rather built up, so we have constant patrol out given that we're up-market.
I have a question about why you did leash corrections all the way back to his place. Doesn't that send the wrong message to go to place? 7:45 & 9:25.
5:44 positive reinforcement vrs positive punishment 5:38
How old is your dog Lakota
