This was a real joy to pull together. I played 20 or so games before settling on this list that’s full of joy and nostalgia. Is your favourite pixel art game in the list? Did I miss anything you think should be here? Feel free to let me know down here in the comments. Cheers all!
Honestly for this category i would've focused on the quality of the pixel art. Vampire survivor makes no sense here imo.
To each their own.
A game i personally would've put in there is Owlboy
Owlboy!!! ah damn it.
THE MESSENGER !! :O
Not that I disagree with any of your options, but a few that I'd also mention from the top of my head: Papers, Please / FEZ / Blackwell series / Eversion
Id love to see you check out Inmost, its a beautiful game with an amazing story, and i wish it could receive the recognition it deserves
One game worth to mention is Hyper Light Drifter. For me it's one of the best fast paced action adventure RPG I've ever played.
It was one of the first games I've played when I built my gaming Pc, so it holds a special place in my heart ♥️
Excellent choice.
Hld is so good. Buttery smooth and fun combat, immersive exploration and sense of discovery, awesome soundtrack, and just hands down the most unique aesthetic I’ve ever seen. It’s responsible for getting me into pixel art and has yet to be topped. Last night or Replaced might be able to do it though.
I made it to the top in celeste a few days ago, it was an incredible experience. I feel I can take on anything now, after overcoming so many times what felt impossible
Tried the farewell DLC and will very much not finish that one. I´ve seen playtroughs of it. It´s way out of my league.
Felt this way too, then tried to play Hollow Knight and gave up.
u need to try strawberry Jam (mod) to see how good that is
That’s on my list of things to do this weekend.
Your voice tone and cadence are soothing like Stardew Valley's OST, not to mention the passionate and poetic words you use to describe things you so clearly love... Sounds like ASMR with content, with a soul... Speaking of which, I should try to rewatch some videos someday and see how fast I can fall asleep to it hahaha Thanks again for the video!
Thank you. That’s very kind of you.
I was away from gaming for some time and now that I'm back it feels amazing to have not one, but several new videos to watch, lol. So good to have you back.
A wonderful countdown, as always. Some of these have been on my list for a while, time to move them to the top!
lovely list. A short hike is such a warmhearted gem. very much recommended
Coming back out with hits after hits! I would add "The Messenger" to the list. It was such a delight with just enough nostalgia to pull us in with the add of new mechanics and visual twists that I haven't seen in other games.
The Messenger! What a game and that twist halfway through! Oh deary, how did I miss this one off the rundown.
If you guys enjoy pixel art just go and play Eastward. No regrets, I swear. Incredible character development and personality, sublime OST, the graphics and stage details/lightning are just mesmerizing to look at, fun battle system + puzzles. I just felt sad after it ended, because it's a beautiful experience.
I've gotten every achievement in Katana ZERO but have never once seen that place where you get the shield around you and deflect bullets. Was that a secret room? What am I missing?
Great curation as always. You guys are the best in the business!
Thank you!
Thanks for the video! To me, Phoenotopia: Awakening is at least a top three. Also, Eastward's OST might be one of my favourites ever.
Fab choice there, thank you for sharing.
Agreed, such an underrated title. Also CrossCode
I had a lot of trouble with Phoenotopia's controls. They feel like they're fighting against what the game is asking you to do much of the time. I'll give it another go sooner or later because it's really comfy and otherwise seems great. I just couldn't get past the controls and how they felt.
Why I haven't come across your page sooner astounds me! This is exactly what I'm looking for in a gaming channel. Nice work ! Now gonna go binge all of your videos.....
Hi there. That's most kind.
Terraria: "Am I a joke to you?"
One of the OG pixel art games
Its not 2023?
Undertale isn't 2023 but it's still featured
Me seeing Undertale at number 10 on this list: "Damn, this is gonna be one hell of a Top 10 list.."
Even if Im not into gaming atm, your voice/delivery is fantastic.
Thank you that's most kind.
I love the way bonfire peaks looks.
I go back and forth playing Eastward and other games, but I'm really enjoying Eastward.
I bought Celeste last year but haven't tried it yet. I've heard it's not easy, but is enjoyable.
Bonfire Peak looks stunning! Thanks so much for bringing this one to my attention 🙂
It's so good!
Was there another version or update to Katana Zero? I ask, because the powers that were displayed in your review (being able to catch and redirect bullets) is not in the version I played. Perhaps it's a mod?
One thing I absolutely love about these videos is when people also comment about games they adore and i get to look up and possibly add soo many new games to my wishlist.
Absolutely agree with this.
I was waiting for your comeback, nice to see you again. i think there is enough really great games for part two? anyway thank you for video I enjoy it so much
I'll be doing another pixel art games to watch out for in 2023 / 2023 in a few weeks time. Many thanks for the kind words about the comeback.
Eastward was a delight. The characters, art design, gameplay, and music were better than I was expecting. The story and pacing really slowed down in the middle and I lost interest, but hoping to return to finish some day! A Short Hike, though. That gave me feels I didn't even know I had. Fantastic game. Great list!
Glad you enjoyed it, many thanks.
The ending gets really weird for Eastward. Left a bad taste in my mouth.
@@aprilmg7072 Good to know. That's a bummer...
@@shaunbinneboese7542 it is 😞 it was my most anticipated game of 2022 and it was a real letdown. Don't think I'll ever replay it.
I'm playing it in this days.
Aside from vampire survivor (I’ve never played it) this whole list is easy to agree with. These are all bangers. If some one twisted my arm to put one more I’d probably put Undermine on my list. Out of the piles upon piles of rogue likes that and Dead Cells have always hovered above the rest. Great video brother. I know I’ve already said it but it’s good to have you back. I missed that soothing voice
I´m really glad I´ve played them all, except for Bonefire Peaks, so onto the wishlist, I guess. (but si that and a Short Hike pixel art, tho?). I would´ve been more inclined giving it to Blasphemous or Hyper Light Drifter.
Great list! Chained Echoes, for me, has shot up the list of pixel art games. I love it so much
Sooooo....I've played all of these. Hope there is a part 2 to this :)
Thanks for introduce me to "Bonfire peaks", I didn't know it and looks great. Awesome selection overall 👍☺️👍
No problem, my pleasure.
Bonfire Peaks is a truly wonderful puzzle game.
@@simonpotticary7658 Nice to hear about ...I will definitely check it out!
I played Harvest Moon on Gameboy when I was a kid and Stardew valley brought me right back to that. Played 30 hours in two days and had to put it down. So relaxing.
Katana Zero is amazing! cant wait for the next one
Hopefully soon!
Is Return of the Obra Dinn considered a pixelart game ? I think it really deserves to be on the list.
Excellent call. And yes. I forgot about it.
So glad you included Bonfire Peaks in this list. It’s a truly wonderful - and utterly beautiful - head scratching puzzler. Vampire Survivors came out of nowhere for me too. I’ve since dumped around 30hrs into it on Xbox, and I’m rather looking forward to the upcoming Switch version.
For me though, and narrowly holding out the likes of Celeste, Cuphead, Death’s Door and Hades, I have to say that Dead Cells is still my favourite indie game ever made. In fact, I’ve put more than 130hrs into it on Switch and, having recently gone back to it on my PS5, I’m currently just two trophies away from getting the Platinum trophy on the PS4 version.
Oh and by the way, it’s great to see you back posting videos, buddy!
Theres one thing wrong with this list ....it's missing noita
Brave decision to keep A short hike such high in list, its truly a short journey but relaxing and most beautiful ❤️❤️
I would have to say that Heroes of Hammerwatch is my favourite pixel art game. It is way, way too grindy, but the gameplay is very solid and I like the way that the different classes that you play have buffs that are account wide. Similar to the Badass Rank in Borderlands 2, only the stat boosted is predetermined by which class you are playing.
Hyped for Bonfire Peaks DLC
All great titles! I'll always be partial to SoTN, but all of these are on my list.
You're back!
Yep! I took a full year off and decided it was time to return.
I've been playing The Messenger to get prepared for Sea of Stars in August, and it's great joy. Other games worth mentioning imo: Fez, The End is Nigh, and Crosscode.
Marvellous , as always
Thank you! Cheers!
dude i once saw a trailer for a pixel art game of a guy and a girl in a kind cyber punk futuristic word but i completely missed it. do u have any idea what it could be? I think it was a narrative game. please help me
I was hoping to see Owlboy, I love his beautiful pixel art and the lovely soundtrack.^^
I must give this another play. Thank you for the nudge.
@@GetIndieGaming
Thank you for the wonderful work you do. :) ❤️
Katana Zero is a truly awesome game worth a play for sure
Hope to see a sequel sometime soon.
@@GetIndieGaming I wish
@@GetIndieGaming Isnt there a DLC that was supposed to come out for it??
Vampire Survivors is they game of my lifetime! Been gaming since the 80s.
Dang, was hoping to see Hyper Light Drifter on here but glad to see some other gems like A Short Hike and Katana Zero
Is it just me ot does Vampire Survivors look like a pixel art candy crush.
I always liked skul: the hero killer that is my go to. When I want a quick procedural game.
Agree with all picks and, in a longer list, I would also add Crosscode and Rain World. Both gameplay and pixel art in both games are top notch.
RAIN WORLD!!!! Ah damn! How could I forget that exceptional game. Ah that will bother me for ages. I'm going to have to play it this evening. Thank you.
i find it uncanny that the video lauds Shovel Knight for how tight its controls are because that's precisely why I put it down after a bit under 2 hours. If it handled like *Hollow* Knight, I'd probably have loved it, but the character felt uncomfortable to start and stop, and the frontal attack has virtually no range, forcing you to downstrike everything.
Since you put Vampire Survivors as #1, I'm curious to see what you think of Magic Survival on Android. It's very similar and although it's still not complete, it has been getting regular updates since it released on Feb 2021. I really love the art style on that game.
Magic Survival is the progenitor of this genre.
Was released in 2019.
I love celeste, so satisfying, amazing story. It's one that I like to play through a couple of times a year. Does art of rally count as pixel art? That game was so underrated, top notch physics, beautiful visuals, lovely nods to rally of yesteryear, amazing soundtrack, definitely worth playing for racing game fans
Art of Rally is utterly superb. It's one of those games where you can get into a flow while playing and everything feels magical as you pull off those drifts and jumps. A wonderful gem of a game. If you haven't seen it, perhaps take a look at Circuit Superstars with it taking me all the way back to the likes of Micro Machines. Here's a link: www.circuit-superstars.com/
@@GetIndieGaming that looks amazing, might just pick it up. I played micromachines on the NES way back when on that crazy codemaster cartridge. The campaign was great but I had the most fun on VS with my sister, baiting her into turns on the F1 car billiard table level on the long straights on the edge of the table, fun times!
A great, visually pleasing pixel art game I love is Narita Boy. It's an amazing 80's style pixel art game that is the most visually beautiful game I have ever played. It is definitely not for everyone but I love it!
You know you love pixel art games, when you've played all the ones mentioned :)
Excellent to hear, Loved doing this video as I got to go back and play so many pixel art highlights.
Seriously getting sick of owlboy not getting th love or praise it deserves. Just as good as undertale, if not better, and the art style is amazing. Nobody checks out games that arent super popular though
I really like loop hero and the pixel art style.
Shoutout to Infernax for its excellent take on the Castlevania 2 formula.
Katana Zero is one of the great "high action" games I've played.
Thanks
It's a tough list to crack - my honorable mentions would be Blasphemous, Graveyard keeper (is that pixel?), Unmetal, Moonlighter, Valfaris, starbound and 198X.
My absolute favourite however, from gameplay, story and the amazing ripper soundtrack that brought Synthwave forward in games was Hotline Miami
Bonfire Peaks looks cool👍🏻
...and A Short Hike 🎮is becoming a Legend, there's also a GDC Game Dev Talk in which the developers explain all the considerations and techniques they used.
Looking forward to seeing that. Such a wonderful game.
Bro!
Review of pixel games originating from Indonesia. Namely a space for the unbound ( asftu). If I'm not mistaken, the plot has the theme of Indonesia in the 1900s. And also won the Japanese International Awards . Please you review it, because happy a first but sad ending T-T
first i wanna say also "thank you for coming back! I really love your taste and am so thankfully for so many good recommendations!
Personally i would say, Undertale is still easily the Nr. 1 and my personal Nr. 2 is Eastward! So much love for it!
Shovel Knight is still a great game I already own it on GOG but added it to my Steam wishlist because the developers are worth it
I have played Celeste for a few hours and all I have found is a challenging platformer that has no story and just seems to go on forever with more and more levels. I guess I haven't gotten far enough in the game to get to the story but I get bored after the first two hours or so and keep dropping it.
Great list of games though! Nice work!
Fantastic list. For me, I would add Subset’s FTL: Faster than Light and Into the Breach to my personal list.
Into the Breach! Incredible game. I must go back and have another play through.
I know you are just going for stuff that has already released, but boy am I excited for sea of stars, that game is so freaking gorgeous, with tons of effort put into every single sprite
I fully expect Sea of Stars to make this list in a year or so. The recent demo on the Switch was superb.
Decent list. What ever happened to innovative pure platformers, though? I miss the days of Super Meat Boy, VVVVVV, etc.
I just started Shovel Knight today! Also, Katana Zero is a great inclusion here.
Everyone who loves Celeste should check out Towerfall. It was their first game and could be described as Celeste meets super smash bros meets pac man, but with bow and arrows. It’s utter madness and so fun to play with friends.
For a game released in 2023, I have to give Norco a mention.
Man, that is some of the most breathtaking pixel art I've seen. I don't know how these artists keep doing it.
For all time, Blasphemous, Hyper Light Drifter, and The Last Door top my list, and Cloudpunk gets a definite mention for most surprising: I was shocked how effective the voxels were at creating a better and more immersive cyber-punk environment than most AAA games in similar settings.
Blasphemous and The last door are from the same developers. This shows how much are influent in the genre. Can't wait for Blasphemous 2
Just found this channel and I love it
Thank you, appreciate the feedback.
Not sure if I like to be reminded of my backlog 😅Eastward, Undertale (both Switch) and Vampire Survivors (downloaded on Game Pass) are just sitting there untouched, while Bonfire Peaks is waiting on my wishlist. And don't get me started on me not being able to progress in/on Celeste or reaching the end boss in Dead Cells for a second time 😪I took Katana Zero and Shovel Knight off my wishlist, because, you know, there is too much. The rest though... I have played 😆
Glad you are back!
The few people that down voted? What's wrong with you? Honestly.
Hi there and thank you.
Game name in the intro(the very first one) please
You should probably give Norco a whirl at some point Stewart.
That's a really good shout. It was in my top 10 GOTY video from last year I never got round to doing. Fab call. Thank you.
Good list, sad i've played all of this games before
Phoenotopia awakening?
I had to give Up on the Game bcs of the difficulty but till that Point it was a great Pixel Art Game.
my favorite gotta be Axiom Verge
Another great call here. Damn fine game. I must play it again asap.
Crosscode is also a banger. There’s just too many to choose from!
"tony fox" XD
Dead cells rocks!! 💪💪 love it!!
I don't think a short hike uses a voxel engine, but polygons. In the menu, you can increase the resolution a lot against the recommendation of the dev, and then it becomes even more obvious.
Thank you for this insight. Appreciated.
looking for a game, pixle style its action game... far as i member, you play as red head i think, a woman warrior... all i member is the trailer that was set in a forest... she was sitting next to her fire place....
well any help?
Rain World is also worth mentioning
Vampire Survivors makes the point
How can you not.
chained echoes should be on the list
Gotta go fast
check out katana zero shits dope af
Ufff! Big miss, Hyper Light Drifter, and it isnt even in the upper part of 10, it's easily the number one. Forgot to add, Fez...from back in 2013, is completing 10 years.
Excellent rundown! Now my list over games to play expanded even more. Personally I've been playing Kynseed (came out last year) and I'm honestly addicted. It's so beautiful and engaging.
Kynseed as an inspired choice! I need to take another look at it. Thanks for the nudge.
Guardian tale is underrated😢
Don't forget Undertale.
Eastward
Cracking, isn’t it.
Why game is that in the thumbnail??
Dead Cells.
Vampire Survivors was my game of 2022.....just seems so simple, yet at the same time its kind of genius with multiple builds and techniques possible.
Where's titan souls? Hyperlight drifter? Pixel art indie master classes...
You've clearly never heard of everhood, if you did it would be #1, 2 and 3
TONY FOX?!
Dead Cells is very addictive. Ye be warned! :)
Rain World !!! ;-;
Oh 100%. Nice to see this being suggested by a few people. Thank you.
@@GetIndieGaming Only crime this game comits is that it's had
It had a DLC( Rain World downpour ) recently with huge amount of content.
