Do you know how chamber 5 solves itself? I saw this in the beginning of the video and I want to know more about it. Is it just completely random or is there a way to trick the game into triggering the level to do that?
This makes sense. You don't want her to interrupt herself, but you also don't want her to skip any camera lines. So they really needed to check the achievement counter and skip the dialogue counter ahead when it's 33.
I'm not trying to patronize you or be rude I just like thinking about this stuff, also, take what I say with a grain of salt as I'm not a valve employee and I'm an amateur programmer at best. There are better simpler implementations that don't require a connection to the steam service or reference to another part of the code, eg, simply keeping track of the times the player portals a camera off the wall independently of the dialogue playing or not; eliminating the need for a "Dialogue" counter in the first place. Safeguards around if the player dies might need to be considered depending on how the aforementioned code was implemented, eg not adding to the count if the player dies 15 times on a level and shoots the camera off the wall every one of those 15 times or 15 times without shooting it and only shooting it on the 16th time, but I digress.
@@Legomanshorts-c5o Isn't the achievement counter tied to the save file? otherwise, we would then be able to create 33 saves and destroy the first camera in each and eventually get the achievement
I think the reason the achievement counter and the voiceline counter are separated by the "is glados talking" check, is to keep track of the achievement while also making sure that the player hears all 4 of the camera detachment voicelines. If both counters went up or if was just a single counter keeping track then everytime glados was already talking and a camera got detached, the corresponding voiceline would be skipped. A simple fix would be to have a check for the achievement counter before selecting a voiceline. Something like If(achieve.count = 33 OR voice.count = 33) { play special voiceline} Though everything seems obvious in hindsight
It may be that the game can send events to the achievement system, but can't read from it. In which case, it would have to have a third variable 😕. Probably worth, but still - unfortunate

This is very interesting. I'm not a game developer and have very little code knowledge outside simple Visual Studio functions, but surely there could just be a mismatch check between the dialogue counter and the achievement counter? If every dialogue is the same past the first three, it shouldn't matter if it gets skipped because the player won't miss much. Something like "if achievementCounter > dialogueCounter, dialogueCounter = achievementCounter". Again, not a developer, but it seems like a simple fix from a layman's point of view. Could have also been so minor that it's not worth dedicating resources to from a business perspective. If I recall, Portal 1 was a very fast project that Valve slapped into the Orange Box at the last minute.

Honestly... As someone who's currently majoring CS, this whole video inspires me to pursue game development at some point, even as a hobbie. Your final speech conveyed emotion in a really good way
As someone who is a self taught programmer, I only know programming as a game development hobby and nothing else :)
When I'm programming something I'm passionate about I get into "the zone", that's what makes me continue to program.
ive heard this a couple of times, no idea it was rare
Can we take a moment to appreciate the editing skills here? Especially at 2:38 :P
This was awesome, popped up on my recommended and didn’t even realise the achievement had its own special dialogue, marblr w
Love your videos. Keep posting videos from other games as well! It's very high quality, and i'm ok with you going to other games if you retain the same quality content!
Love to see you branching out with your content. Many youtubers get trapped in a "niche" and find it hard to break out. I think its clear from the quality of your content that you are one of the exceptions.
as a game dev, i can guarantee you this was the work of one tired dev at like 4 am going like "fuck it it's too hard to get the variable for achievement progress, just make a dialogue counter instead w/e" and here we are 16 years later still talking about it lmao
Ur going to be a million+ subs channel soon. Please keep up this diverse content it is just pure gold. For sure doing only ow will hold u back. This is amazing
when will marblr be making his triumphant return?
As someone who wants to do game dev-ing as a job, I always find coding and work arounds and loopholes to certain problems always fascinating.
It's interesting that everyone couldent wait 33 seconds
THANK YOU For putting the music in the description!
I MISS U!!
never expected a portal video from you, but as someone whos been in love with this game and series since i first played it over 12 years ago, i am all for this video and your other types of content. i loved this video
RIP Marblr
I really like this! It never came up in my feed though, which is weird because I almost always watch your videos on release.
bro made portal vid and immediately gone lmao
bro stepped away from overwatch for one second and they punished him for it
But this video performed well@@riff_raf
@@ItzJupiter I was implying that blizzard assassinated him for making a video about something other than Overwatch.
Ohhh lmao that makes sense@@riff_raf
This was a super interesting video! Always neat to learn new Portal trivia and you explained it super concisely!
miss u
I am very glad that you are expanding the themes for your videos!
4:12 glados is the cubes?? :0 the lore!!!!
Thank you for this video! I love Portal with all of my heart, and I had no idea about this. I enjoyed the video greatly 🖤
please continue branching out like this! your presentation style and editing are always a joy to watch. you could post a video about a mosquito's digestive system and i'm sure i'd still be entertained ✨
thats one of the best portal videos I have ever watched, thanks for posting
it's here 2:59
Please keep making videos like this. Learning stuff like this in games is always cool. Now I'm gonna get a rare voice line!!
Portal is a great choice to start branching out the content, usually those changes are kinda jarring but Portal has a special place in people's hearts. Nice video as always.
Also love how it says "detatch" in the code lol
Cool, I saw that too! And then I scrolled down until *all* comments were loaded. You are the only one who wrote a comment about it :)
7:08 OMG Is that Chell? I need the source for that, please.
Marblr content is always welcome, whether it is overwatch or whatever other thing he loves and is passionate about
Keep up the amazing work!
Where's marblr?
Taking a break or making a new video
Brotha you dont have to make a 7 minute video about a single voiceline
Great video! No longer play Overwatch myself but I still tune in to watch all your videos. This video format works and is really captivating regardless of what game.
come back
