Some says VW make a mistake by invested over $700 million in XPeng, they said it will be like VW handed over their technology to XPeng or XPeng gonna steal their technology simply because they are Chinese. A special comment over your presentation and professional honesty in reviewing car products. It never occurs to me you and your colleagues favor one vehicle over another one. Your review provides analytical insights with indicators for self assessment, which is what an independent review is required. Therefore as mentioned previously rema8the way you are. Love this car, seen so many reviews, so badly want one, with the premium pack, I hear the sound system is amazing, knowing my luck it will be at Munich next month, which I'm not going to! Great review, like I said I've watch so many reviews on this, yet you showed us bits I'd not seen before. Keep up the great work.
I own two Nios, personally like Nio and BYD more than XPeng, but G9 is quite a nice EV. And the title makes me wonder, western companies like VW and Audi choose to invest and cooperate with Chinese EV brands because they know those Chinese techs on EV is too late for them to invest and develop internally by themselves, whether it is the design or function concept, both on interior and exterior, after they visited the Shanghai Auto Show and got shocked at, WHILE some people outside of China, still like to judge and consistently believe that products made in China present low-end quality and design, despite they may not know most of the things they are using daily are made in China, some of them are totally designed by Chinese companies and just relabeled by brands they are familiar with. I can't really see that if it is a loss for Chinese brands, or the market of consumers who keep thinking that way. I have been witnessing a huge transition in China's auto market in the recent 4 or 5 years, EV are getting cheaper and more reliable, along with the upgrading HMI system and battery parts, thanks to huge amounts of charging stations being built countrywide and some other technologies advancement. BUT EV OR NOT, things are being more and more intelligent in China for daily uses, people can leave their houses with only a smartphone few years before the pandemic, pay for literally everything, and now everything are being connected more and more under the 5G+AI network being built and already waiting for the 6G to come. So is it really worthy to carry ideologies and bias on the back, denying progress from the other side of the world, and isolate selves living in "old ages".
Regarding doing "everything" with your phone; I quite like that I can still pay with cash at most places and that the government doesn't have total access to my social life through access to phone apps. That's a big difference.
@@Jajalaatmaar It's 2023 now, you government can accesses to get to know all your social life and transfers by all means, the only question is are you worthy for them to do so.
@@cheungchingtong I understand that that is the Chinese cope and you can't really do anything about it, but it's not true in my country (source: I work for the government where a recurring issue is a lack of data and how to use available data without violating privacy laws).
@@Jajalaatmaar Lol, you just misunderstood what I just said, totally. dear. Personal data leak mostly happen in banks and internet companies, not the government, you know your information are leaked when you get one of those fraud calls. But I have something to share due to your comment, in mainland China here, the government also need to apply under the privacy regulation, or restriction, on personal information. Take this as example, in Mainland, buying a mobile SIM card, you need to provide your ID and bind it to your card, most of time if you register an internet account, for most of apps or websites, you do it with your phone number, that means if the government wants to track your internet footprints, they can. BUT, tens of thousands of Chinese criticize or even some spread rumors and hatred publicly, on Douyin, Weibo and Bilibili(Just like keyboard warriors and haters on Tiktok, Twitter and RUclips), no one get warned or arrested if what he/she says does not do harms to others, national security or normal citizens. So my point is, average normal citizens are totally fine with what we are dealing with here, it is a country with 1.4 billion, you don't expect a government being so bored to go check everyone, unless you are actually committing crimes financially or criminally. Everything should be done under the law, and it's funny sometimes some of those laws are too strict and, stubborn I would say, people urge the CCP to improve, just like what I mention above, we usually see haters spreading rumors online, and most of times the government is too late to handle them, it is us, we need to report those kinds of garbage to the officials, urge them to delete those rumors and hold ones responsible. And THIS is what I mean by are you worthy. We are actually using so called L2.99999 autonomous driving system (or more precisely driving assistant system) in China. The EVs with this ability are able to self-driving in some cities e.g. Shanghai and Beijing. However, drivers are still responsible for the driving action, which means if there is an accident, the driver should afford the consequence.
Didn't take long for the student to master the art of car making to such an extent that the former master is now the pupil. The progress of Chinese car brands is impressive.
Apparently the 700 million investment only give VW access to the G9 platform. The new and more advanced G6 platform that is more efficient and includes features like megacasting and cell to body construction is still off limits to VW.
Ok that makeup mirror feature is actually really thoughtful and well implemented 👏 also I absolutely agree with you about there no longer being domestic brands - we live in a modern global economy grandpa, time to wake up!
Thomas, your review of the G9 was highly anticipated on my behalf as the one you did on the Skoda Kodiaq some years ago convinced me on buying that. Your reviews are honest and credible hence the reason you are my go-to-guy when it comes to car reviews - and this time was not different 👍 Thanks so much for doing a great video and please keep us posted if there are news regarding CarPlay/Auto or other relevant topics. Thanks again!
actually its not a surprise, the china have new architecture of building infrastrucre helping EV , and they are the 1st industrial power and gdp, they have the 1st EV market, despite its a luxuary product overthere, middleclass cant afford a 50k€ suv in china. its like the smartphone market, once a time hold by few companies nookia/apple/samsung who maintain very high price for too long, the chinese smartphone came with better and cheaper product..a xiaomi huawei at 300$ is better than an apple at 700$. the same is coming with electric vehicule, no matter what western do with EV a chinese car will be cheaper and better because it cost less to make.
Bad reviewers are always "grateful" when reviewing a new car & will bestow gushy lavish praise & admiration in order not to offend the car execs. Thomas' reviews on the other hand are in a different league fearlessly listing all pros & cons and if necessary 6:55 will speak to the CEO about animal skins or any other shortfalls. These principles make your reviews superb and second to none.
I live in China and have owned my G9 for a few months now. Previous car was a Model Y and I can say without doubt the G9 is a much better car than the Y. Not just by a little bit but a long way for the reasons detailed in the review. No regrets. But there are still some software bugs that need improvement but I can live with that because the G9 is so comfortable to drive. Buy and enjoy.
Thanks again for another great review. Nice car, and beautiful interior. Just be patient until the software is in order and then it will be a real competitor.
I was wondering if you were a couple and then both of your smartphones showed us beautiful pictures of you two when you started the autobahn part. Congratulations and great review as usual!
holy crap, chinese cars (and products in general) have come a long way. just going by the video (and your comments), I can feel this car is much better put together than my tesla model Y.
On one side, WV ID series is way under their expected quality, finishes and trims, that are more suitable for the cheaper brand of the group, but, surprisingly, on that side, Cupra and Škoda offer better quality for less price. This XPENG looks as premium as an Audi (at least from the screen) for the price of a WV. I thing this joint could serve well to WV if they don’t ruin it.
Thank you kindly for reviewing the G9. have been requesting and looking forward to seeing you review it and was not disappointed. As always you are among the most thorough and clear reviewers. As pointed out there may be a couple of factual errors, but hopefully you'll clarify once you've had a chance to double check.
Super cool that you reviewed this one. It just seems like the value king in this luxury segment atm. Nice attention to the details, like that air conditioning control and the cooling in the storage compartment. Does it beat an Mercedes EQE SUV in value to you, you think? Even with software being as it is right now. I mean, this thing is €77K with the interior package in the Netherlands. The first EQE SUV with hyperscreen (I think that's a fair comparison right?) is around €120K. And then you still charge half as fast and reach 100 km/h half as fast. Oh and this thing has 7 years warranty right now. Mercedes has 2 years... I want to see an Xpeng G9, BMW IX, Mercedes EQE SUV and Audi Q8 E-Tron comparison.
Thanks! For me, they need to upgrade the software (seems very doable with some bugfixes imho), then it would easily beat the EQE SUV. Software being right now would be a little to annoying to me, but I guess you can also get the software upgrades over the air later
not really to be honest, there was no real congestion, it was very loud, I was shocked a couple of times in a dangerous way and it is super annoying. It also appears randomly 3 times in a row
4:25 they do it because they want to see if the tire and wheel flexes during acceleration or not, they also have a little dot on the tire which you can see very lightlly, they are placed on the same level when you have brand new tires and wheels put on.
Year ago, their self steer was already head and shoulders above anything from Europe and the US. Their smaller cars have been a bit meh based on reviewers I trust, but this one looks promising. EQE SUV alternative more so than a Model Y alternative? Comparing to Tesla easily exposes less than amazing aero and drivetrain efficiency. You end up needing the large battery to match a Model Y, I guess, before seeing the range claims and findings.
The G9 is not meant to compete against the Model Y. That would be the G6, which has the same dimensions as the Y with considerably better fuel efficiency.
Thanks for all your very detailed reviews. I drove a XPENG G9 and it was fabulous. The next day I drove a ZEEKR 001 and I was a little bit disappointed. Not a bad car, but……. I cannot lay my finger on it, why this is. Do you understand what I say and can you make sense of it? Thanks!
this car interior and all the tech in side it its just soooo exciting. i can say i already stayed in one and if i would need a car i would buy this one! its amazing for young modern family
This is indeed a very interesting car. The only thing that worries me is the financial situation of XPeng. If they reach the bankrupt, we will not find spare parts anymore. That is the only reason why I am hesitating to order one. A part from that, software issues can always be fixed. It is just a matter of time
That's the big concern. Although the product is good, but on the verge of collapse, there is no big back support, and there are few models. Every step is a test of life and death. Cars that are hot in Europe sell only moderately well in China. Few of the cars that sell well in China have the capacity to go to Europe.
@@zebraimage they might be rising their sales but not in China which is their biggest market. It is a risk to buy this car but it is really amazing for the price you pay it
@@OSQQ123 I'm talking about the total numbers including China. It has been increasing the last 6 months in a row, which seams to be a positive sign, plus the VW investment. I hope they have hit the bottom.
The cover and (cooled) space in the central tunnel were already used in the 1st generation Peugeot 3008. That only opens from the driver side, by the way. The portable torch light in it’s boot, was copied by Skoda in it’s Karoq model to start with. Keep making great videos Thomas! 👍🏻
Amazing stuff as always! One question though; Are sure they will offer Android Auto / CarPlay? Because this is the first time I hear of this, and their Danish department has gone on record denying any implementation of this on numerous occassions.
I think the Dutch dealers are really pushing Xpeng to support it because a lot of people want it here (and Xpeng has implemented a few suggestions they made before the cars went into production). But as of yet, no support yet. I hope they do support it eventually.
Great review. Had a testdrive scheduled for today and was even more excited after your review. It drove perfect and you were right about the steering wheel. Even with the sport settings to loose. Thanks!
XPeng should add youtube, netflix, disney+ and others for the passenger display, because if you have the same functionality on both of the displays it isn't really worth having it. But all-in-all it's a really good car and Thomas is making sure that review is non bias.
That is launched on cars now, they got Twine4Car and the passenger can look while driving: RUclips, AppleTV, Disney+, Amazon Prime etc. Netflix is told to get in there in a bit.
@thomas Why are you not reviewing the Fisker Ocean. Waiting for it since a long time? Its an interesting concept and I want to know how it drives from a German's POV.
As always Thomas, a really nice reviuw. (But I would say that the driver position/interiour is NOT influenced by T***a, rather from Genesis sort of) XPeng + VW looks very interesting, plz VW copy this interiour to your EVs asap...
I continue to lament the apparent going-away of the traditional hooded gauge cluster in favor of a kitchen appliance feel, but other than and despite of that, that is a really nicely designed and put together interior. Exterior's not too bad either. Also, don't worry about bias accusations, those people simply want you to be biased towards what they like. You do you and you do it well. Cheers from US.
Pretty big update coming this month (March 2023). The beta for it just released. It will seems to solve pretty much all the software complaints in on go. Now to see if they can deliver. It features: - Bluetooth sound quality improved. - Battery capacity can now also be displayed in percentage. - Charging stations in navigation can now be filtered by charging capacity. - German language setting is now possible. - Fewer disclaimers for apps. - Improving the translation of functions in Dutch and other languages. - DSM (driver monitoring system) can now have 3 different sensitivities: low/normal/high. High is what the standard was before the update. - LSS (Lane support system): number of warnings significantly reduced to the most necessary and legally necessary. Less vibrations on the handlebars. - IHB (intelligent high beam): Should be more precise, turn off the lights earlier to avoid annoying oncoming traffic. Should be better on highways too. - X-Pilot ACC (adaptive cruise control): should work more "smoothly", less braking by parked cars at the edge of the street. Also improved logic in processing speed limit changes. Now automatically maintains speed when switching from LCC to ACC by steering movement. - X-Pilot LCC (Lane Centering Control): Traffic light detection has now been added and appears at the top of the driver's dashboard. Optimization of acceleration and braking, so less slow acceleration and less sudden braking, even when drivers merge in front of you into your lane. Also less delay in corners and less chance of the system switching itself off. - ALC (automatic lane shift assistant): Feedback has been improved and timing of acceleration after the lane change has taken place has been improved. ALC should be able to be the primary means of lane changing on the highway. - APA (intelligent park assist): Has become better at parking in spaces. Better comfort due to fewer sudden movements during parking. Better at parallel parking on roads and also in narrow streets. Less time switching between forward and reverse during parking movement. - 360 degree camera: tires are now visible under the chassis. Transparent chassis has been improved. Steering direction and tire position can now be seen in real time. Optimization of the driving direction in 360-degree view to prevent parking damage. - Beeps: fewer beeps and visual notifications during X-Pilot with ACC, X-Pilot with LCC and ALC while driving. A more peaceful and user-friendly driving experience should be the result. - Air conditioning: anti-dust function starts earlier, reducing the risk of air conditioning and window damage.

Hello Thomas and thank you for a terrific and useful video. Very helpful when I am considering buying a G9. I wonder if you can tell me how well this car withstands road salt? This is a big issue in Norway and cars that are 4-5 years old are rusting away.
From what I understand, VW invests in XPeng in order to re-taking the China market share quickly because the Xpeng platform is very cheap. Having level-4 (L4) autonomous driving is just BONUS. According to them, this whole deal is all about addressing the issue about VW losing share in its single biggest market, China. Per Oliver Blume, the VW-Xpeng platform is only for the China market, not US and Europe because VW already covers them with its PPE, MEB+, and SSP platforms. I would say it is the quickly short-term solution strategy. 👍

I really love the Xpeng G9! I hope someday I can afford one. It's just such an amazing car at that price point
Trust me, aito m5 and m7 is the best.
i prefer G6, G9 is a bit too big.

I'm suprised for the price it's extremely good.
Seeing both you and Lia's matching wallpapers is so adorable

A special comment over your presentation and professional honesty in reviewing car products. It never occurs to me you and your colleagues favor one vehicle over another one. Your review provides analytical insights with indicators for self assessment, which is what an independent review is required. Therefore as mentioned previously rema8the way you are. On this car, well, I am speechless. Absolutely incredible to see so much premium details and almost luxurious environment at a (high) reasonable price. I will surely look over such op8the time mine will need to pave the way for her/his successor. Still waiting to be honest for the potential SUV ZEEKR with hopefully the sodium solid state battery.
highly appreciated !
Based on ZEEKR's brand positioning, it is unlikely to manufacture SUV in the short term.

Great review, like I said I've watch so many reviews on this, yet you showed us bits I'd not seen before. Keep up the great work.

Wish VW would spend that amount of money on anything but premium and executive crossovers/suvs
The G6 is coming to Europe in Q2 next year. €40.000 to €45.000 in Netherlands (we'll see), my dealer told me. That's below a base model Y.

And please, it is not a Chinese cope and something we can't really do anything about, so no offence, but please do not comment things the way you get to know from some others' opinions(let's say mainstream medias?), before you really get to know them, love.
@@Jajalaatmaar If you really care about online privacy, then you should advocate American companies to do the same not selective, but china bad right? Hypocrite.

The top Chinese new vehicle players (except BYD) purchase their battery from CATL mainly.

I love Thomas way…almost unintentional but detailed and committed…..superb.

I'm impressed with this and if the price point is good, I think it can be a definite competitor
The price point is good. First batch arriving to customers next two months.
actually its not a surprise, the china have new architecture of building infrastrucre helping EV , and they are the 1st industrial power and gdp, they have the 1st EV market, despite its a luxuary product overthere, middleclass cant afford a 50k€ suv in china.
its like the smartphone market, once a time hold by few companies nookia/apple/samsung who maintain very high price for too long, the chinese smartphone came with better and cheaper product..a xiaomi huawei at 300$ is better than an apple at 700$.
the same is coming with electric vehicule, no matter what western do with EV a chinese car will be cheaper and better because it cost less to make.
This is why Chinese manufacturers are overtaking the 'old guard' car makers.
Price is good, depends on the tariffs the EU is gonna put on Chinese EVs

I live in China and have owned my G9 for a few months now. Previous car was a Model Y and I can say without doubt the G9 is a much better car than the Y. Not just by a little bit but a long way for the reasons detailed in the review. No regrets. But there are still some software bugs that need improvement but I can live with that because the G9 is so comfortable to drive. Buy and enjoy.
Thanks for the feedback!
The inside of the Tesla looks like a rental house. The inside of the XPeng looks like a mansion

How do you compare build/quality and driving experience with the Zeekr 001 ?
12:38 awww the phone wallpaper 💜 And on both phones too. So cute!

Absolutely, don't make too many weird VW changes. Let the XPeng do what they do!

Haven't driven EQE much but imho, forget software it's somehow much more "smooth" than EQE.
@@autogefuehl You have to explain how it would easily beat the eqe?
same or better range, better fast charging, better build quality, way less expensive. Just software wise as I said at this moment too annoying
@@autogefuehl same range, Mercedes much better design exterior and interior, Mercedes better build quality, bettet handling.
That congestion warning was very good and helpful!!
not really to be honest, there was no real congestion, it was very loud, I was shocked a couple of times in a dangerous way and it is super annoying. It also appears randomly 3 times in a row
4:25 they do it because they want to see if the tire and wheel flexes during acceleration or not, they also have a little dot on the tire which you can see very lightlly, they are placed on the same level when you have brand new tires and wheels put on.
Randomly, I keep watching reviews by this channel... From now on am subscribed 👍
Most welcome!
Very interesting car, with an optional head up display and panoramic sunroof with function to open it would be the perfect car for me!
@@networm78 Turns out the have insufferable driving aids in this car. Total deal breaker.
14:00 Okay we need more Lea in the future. In fact Thomas you could just provide voice over, and let Lea do all the actions. XD

Thanks!
Thomas is living the dream!
You are a true car commentator, cheer for you, and ignore those nonsense.
this car interior and all the tech in side it its just soooo exciting. i can say i already stayed in one and if i would need a car i would buy this one! its amazing for young modern family
Leasing the car may be the best solution for eager customers. If something happens, the bank takes the hit.
Judging from their recent sale numbers, it seems that they're on the rising curve now. I'm also thinking should I get one.

It features:
- Bluetooth sound quality improved.

@@TsLeng My car at the moment is the VW ID4 and i have more than enough leg- and head room. The car before was an Audi E-tron, same there. The head room in the G9 is more than fine, what i am lacking is to be able to move the seat back, for maximum comfort i would want to have at least 5-6 more cm leg room.
Most german and swedish cars have actually great adjustment for the driving seat but from my experience i find that asian cars tend to be more conservative in that department.
@@victorcederholm5336 well that's interesting to know you maxed out on the G9's longitudinal adjustment and still don't feel comfortable. Surprising as I assume seats generally can go back quite far, far enough in my Skoda for me to not be able to touch any controls lol.
