I use it as a phone, not my bank and credit cards. Also my dog carry's it around all day so the government can keep an eye on him for me.

+XDki113r You are right, but there is a bit more to it than that (don't backup texts to iCloud, don't use a weak 4-digit phone passcodes or fingerprint unlocking, hope that Apple didn't put a backdoor in their key-server, etc). That's if you want full security, at least.
+soulstealer29a Look up what TED really is about and it might make a little more sense. These talks are not necessarily step 1-5 "how to/tutorial" kind of deal. These talks/speakers is everything from professors to a regular sculpture-artist sharing their ideas. TED's slogan is after all "Ideas worth spreading". To me, this particular idea is simple; Be aware of surveillance and know that you already have tools that can help protect you. Hope this clarifies a bit.
+HandullDTD If the texts are encrypted as it says in the talk, backup'd or not it won't change anything, they're still encrypted. and about 4-digit phone, that's just an issue overall.
I'd also like to know why fingerprint unlocking is unsafe, I'm not very informed about them.
+XDki113r Your iMessages are end to end encrypted, but when they are backed up to iCloud the encryption isn't as secure, and Apple has backdoors into iCloud data. Anything stored in iCloud can easily be obtained by Apple for any govt agency if a legal warrant is supplied. If you are especially concerned about the security of the data on your device, you want to turn off iCloud backup.
Additionally, a weak point in end to end system is access to the device. If you are arrested, for example, and the police legally have access to your phone, they can access anything that is encrypted if they can get in. It is well known that the fingerprint reader can be hacked with a good quality casting of your fingerprint. While in custody, again as an example, it would be easy for someone to lift your prints off something in the holding cell you touch, or even just off the back of the phone itself. It would be a lot of work, but if they wanted it, they could get at your data. An 'easy' work around to this would be to shutdown your phone if you knew you were about to be arrested. On startup, the fingerprint login would be disabled, and they would have to crack your passcode. If it is only a 4-digit passcode, it is relatively weak.
Finally, it is worth explaining what I meant by Apple's key server. I saw a great video about this, but I don't recall who it was by. Imagine Alice wants to send Bob an iMessage. To do so, she uses Bob's public key, stored in Apple's key server to encrypt the message so that only Bob can decrypt it. However, Alice also wants to be able to see the message on any of her other devices with iMesssage, and Bob wants to see the message on all of his devices with iMessage. So in practice, each device has it's own public/private key pair, with the public key stored on Apple's key server. If Alice and Bob each have two devices, then Alice really ends up sending her message three times. Twice to Bob and once to herself. Now, Apple claims there is no backdoor into their key server, however they also haven't provided any tools to allow people to verify this fact. Imagine the NSA wanted a backdoor into Alice's conversations. All Apple would have to do is list a third device as belonging to Alice. Alice would then unwitting also send her message to this third device, but since it wasn't one of her devices, and instead was owned by the NSA, they could now decrypt and read the message on their end. It is the one little flaw in Apple's "we give you true end to end encryption" statement. It's a slight oversimplification, but it's good enough I think for posting here.

Well, he's not entireley wrong. He mentioned that it cannot 'easily' be wiretapped (i.e. like the old phone lines where you literally tap into the hardwire). He didn't mention anything about Whatsapp getting to your data in THEIR end.

This is quite true, when a backdoor is built into things. It makes it where ANYONE can break into them, not just the people that built the devices.
Very good Ted. Hackers aren't usually outsiders, but are Cable & Phone company employees with special knowledge of and acess to communication systems. Everyone should also avoid ATM's other than those located at your bank. There is a lot of hacking at the eaisly accessable unguarded ATM's found in fast food restaurants, gas stations, laundry mats etc. First red flag is the antenna on these.
I laughed when he said whatsapp is secure to us. FB gets in enough trouble on its 9wn with its Hacker-haven, messenger. He never said how to secure our phones, he implied we Trust free apps that t rack us everywhere we go.

1. There's no actual proof of such encryption other than a message and a picture of a QR code.
2. Even if it's indeed encrypted, Facebook (which owns Whatsapp) would have the encryption key. So at least you're protected from your government... But not from Facebook... which can and will still sell your messages and data to the government anyway.
That is how Facebook will become the world's pseudo world government my friend.

this TED talk is full of disinformation, or mostly out dated information. it was factual at least from 2018 that all of those big tech giants are collecting massive amount of personal data, analysing it and sharing it with god knows who. this is a fact. not a theory.
It's like people who don't believe that all of those smart devices sold to you by amazon (Alexa ?) and Apple are not wired to the microphone, taking hints from whatever you say when you are near your device (almost all day long) and using it for either ad re-targeting on 3rd party platforms or even worse

Actually it goes back to 1998 and a document signed by Bill Clinton called Presidential Decision Directive 63; also known as the "Critical Infrastructure Protection Plan". A slick name to make it seem like their original intention was to protect us but if you actually read the entire document (almost impossible to find now in it's complete form) it becomes obvious that they plan all along was to take control of tech companies by "offering" them protection in exchange for having a certain degree of control. And if they refuse they'll suddenly find themselves getting attacked by hackers; credit card numbers stolen etc. until they come crying back to the feds begging them for protection when it was the feds attacking them all along. It's no different than how the Mafia operates with their "protection rackets". They didn't start recording all cell phone calls until 2003 with the Carnivore system, later renamed DCS1000 which was run by the FBI. Carnivore became obsolete when the NSA launched the Trapwire system some time between 2006 & 2010 & then the Prism system in 2007 but I think those two programs are currently running in parallel and I think Trapwire is more a collection effort; Prism is more dissemination of information to intelligence agencies on an instantaneous but "as needed" basis. The NSA has nodes and listening posts scattered all over the world so that there's no way you could ever shut them down - even if you blew up one of their buildings all traffic would just get rerouted to another one. Apparently the most recent and most high tech facility is the one in Utah but I trained not far from the one at this location: 33°24'43.60"N 82°10'7.54"W.

The video does a good job of reaching to the general public and raising awareness, despite the lack of substantial advice. More people need to know about the necessity, benefits and feasibility of encryption in daily interaction.

From what I recall, Facebook is willing to give out user data to the FBI or NSA willingly. Possibly sending data is encrypted but what ever content hosted by Facebook can be forfeited.

Absurdly enough, only 2-3 years after this TED talk was published, apple started doing exactly that to their customers - tracking their every click, application usage, geolocation etc.. and sharing that with god knows who else in addition to probably many 3rd parties, few among them must be government agencies.
To add an an insult to injury, in 2020 the forced and sneaky installation of a tracking app (Corona tracking app. hmm...sure) on every iPhone the moment the owner of that phone decided to upgrade his iOS, an action that in many cases is mandatory in order to be able to keep using the offered apps, and even worse making this tracking feature a built-in native module in iOS so you can not remove it, should you wish not to be tracked. that component was installed without any consent of the user of the phone - and what is even more raging, that update that took so long to arrive and that many users were expecting would fix multiple major issues with the phone, did not fix anything - probably was a click bait to have people install the tracking component.
Call me a tin foil hat but all of those tech giants like the big G, FB and for sure Apple are all human mass surveillance sub-contractors in a guise of service providers, and they don't exclude anybody - it's like all of us are criminal without committing any crime.
Until some time in history - in order to have somebody tap into your privacy was requiring you to commit a major crime and them using a special warrant - today those who wish to provoke our privacy are doing it at their whim.
This is WHY i hate Technology.

One thing I do know about Apple which is true is that they are the only phones on the market which are TEMPEST shielded. Which means that they'll survive an EMP or HERF or CME. The NSA initiated the TEMPEST program. I only know this because I trained less than a mile from here: 33°24'43.60"N 82°10'7.54"W
ALL of our equipment had the TEMPEST program stamp on it - a small metal plate with NSA TEMPEST certification markings on it.

I don't feel they need to be in use to record. I've had SEVERAL occasions where an ad, suggested video or website appears on a different device after I had merely discussed the topic to physical people. It's very creepy.
Those of us who were employed on US Gov't contracts over 60 years ago knew all this before the "digital age". It was ASSUMED that whenever we picked up the phone to communicate, that someone other than the intended call recipient was always listening, and we were always mindful of the WW2 axiom "Loose Lips Sink Ships". This was a habit that extended even to normal conversations when no job related topics were discussed.

My understanding is that the surveillance actually takes place on the network level as opposed to the device. By this I mean the actual network infrastructure (Cell Towers) is vulnerable.

What I learned was not to trust any new devices. If I want to send a secure message I will use the post office and write a letter. It is still a Federal offense punishable with prison and/or fines if.someone were to open your letter.

It's scary to think that you could be on your personal laptop, and be minding your own business, and have someone tap into your webcam and see what you are doing.
It has happened. There was a case a few years back where a father discovered his middle school child's webcam was being remotely activated so basically it was in his/her bedroom and the school could remotely activate the webcam without his/her knowledge. That's why I put a triple layer of electrical tape over the web cam on my desktop and laptop,tablet and double layer on my phone. Now how to disable the mic unless and until you needed it for a call.
Completely cover the phone with aluminum foil when not in use. The NSA Hoovers up all your phone conversations and meta data, but they do not have people look at them, they store them, and if charges are brought against you, or if you are suspected of being a threat to any of the intel agencies they go back and look at your communications, see if they can find something incriminating, or even if they can find a lead, that will direct them to a person or a place where they might be able to find incriminating evidence legally.
