    I was fortunate to be associated with Bill Krause back in the 90s (when we were both much younger). He was already a talented model maker back then; his skills now are just next level. His designs really are breathtaking and he deserves to take his place alongside Jefferies, Probert, Drexler and all the others who have brought the starships Enterprise to life.

    The more I see the Titan/G, the more I like it.
    It doesn’t feel like a natural evolution from the Sovereign, Odyssey or Inquiry, designs, but it fits well with the Stargazer, Excelsior II, Duderstadt, etc. and I think it’s a GREAT representation of how Starfleet is moving back towards exploration ships and away from aggressive pointed warships.

    That Endurance model is awesome, as is the shuttle. Put that in Star Trek Legacy. The ship could easily be a 2400s ship.

    Love Mr. Krause’s designs and I hope he gets the opportunity to design more ships for Star Trek as things move forward.
    Can’t wait to see future videos with him!!
    Thanks for making this happen, Treyards and thanks to Mr. Krause for giving his time to this video.

    Bill interacts with us model builders on the Facebook model groups and is a joy. He shares works in progress from armature design to clean led lighting. He adds so much to the model community by his sharing of knowledge, and a picture says a 1000 words. Bills pictures speak volumes more. He helps modelers push for better. I love his designs and happy to see him succeed in the Star trek universe

I really hope we get to see the Endurance in some future project as I feel like it would be the best of Bill's designs to fit into a later era of the Trek Universe and I am a big fan of that ship (throw in some Javelin shuttles too).

    Dana Knutson had some fantastic designs in the first FASA manuals. "Wrath of Khan" established the "cut and paste" fleet look, which from a production standpoint makes more sense than what we see later where every ship has a unique nacelle design.

  • @Jack_Stafford
    @Jack_Stafford 8 месяцев назад +2

    Clearly the design belongs 100 years earlier, and is an excellent edition to that era.
    Two questions about the design that I can't think of an "in universe" explanation for, is the odd, asymmetrical grill shapes on the sides of the nacelles, a rare oddity on an otherwise very clean, elegant, logical design, and the very large number of impulse engines; even the largest ships in this size/class performed at the top of end of speed with much smaller proportioned engines.
    Especially ones that thrust right into the front of the bussard collectors.
    Also, severe lack of windows... no ship in the past 150+ years had so few windows along the edge of the saucer, especially. That is very hard to justify.
    Overall, so much nicer than ANY of the "Nu Trek" designs, the Titan is just lost in time from its era.
    Cheers!

    Thanks for the interview, Bill. You said you were surprised when it was chosen as the hero ship, can you elaborate on your reaction? I've got to be honest, it'd be a fine background ship, but before I even knew it was called the Titan A my first reaction was "I hope that's not the same class as the next Enterprise." Apparently I was not alone, how do you feel about the fan response? It's interesting to hear you say you were not a fan of the TNG era and you wanted to take it back to the 60's and 70's. Would you have chosen a different direction had you known what was on the table?

    • @Tuning3434
      @Tuning3434 8 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah, I relate to that reaction. It's a fine ship, but the nacelle's are just a bit to outlandish for my taste. My old sketchbook is full of ships that have similar outlandish thingy's, so I totally understand why that route is taken, but it just that I never considered my sketches to be hero ships either.
      It's a bit like the USS Centaur. I love it as a background / one-off. But I would have a different opinion off it it was the ship we would look at all the time. Maybe it's not fair of me to judge it like designs like the original Conny and Ent-D that where designed as a constant eye-catch for a long running show, while Titan-A / Ent-G was picked with the knowledge it was a one season only thing.
      I must admit, I have not watched any episode of Picard, so I don't have the same emotional connection with it as I have with the other hero ships.

    • @TychoYard
      @TychoYard 8 месяцев назад +3

      I was surprised in the fact that one of my designs was chosen to be used for the show. I mean, how exciting is that? I knew the other fan reaction was going to have a field day with it but that was beyond my control. I didn't say I wasn't a fan of TNG, only that I haven't built any ships of that era, except the D. I also was not taking anything back to the 60's or 70's. The TOS and Movie era ships are the ones I build the most and the Shangri-La being a 23rd century design was selected by the show runner because he preferred that look. I did not make that decision for them.

    • @Cheezbat
      @Cheezbat 8 месяцев назад +1

      Go figure I prefer all the newer Next Gen and beyond designs. Not a big fan of the ‘old’ ships. The one thing I actually liked about the Titan-A was the nacelles.
      I didn’t mind it as a hero ship, but I hate that they turned it into the Enterprise-G.

  • @Nurhaal
    @Nurhaal 4 месяца назад +1

    I love the ships design, its just shallow being a part of "Picard' which is canonically decades past Voyager.
    Bill's work is absolutely extraordinary and I love it. Even as one whos isnt fjll Tekkie, Bill's work alone along with a couple of others make me want to be one. I just cant stand the bsd writing of the new shows. However, Bill capturs that Trek feel from a technical prospect. Theres a little less functionality in Bill's work and more artistic flare, but thats why the cool-factor for his stuff is so good.
    That said, this "Neo Connie" is basically a pander machine almost as if there was Corporate demands made on him to make it look so purposefully retro and thus going agsinst any if the established logic of the IP's setting/lore.
    Its amazing. And in hesd cannon I see it as more of a Battleship or Supercruiser for the Refit/Movie era of some sort - but none the less it does feel odd purposefully going so hard into Retro considering the setting of it's use.
    Wonderful ship. Id nit pick the nacelles, but other than that - Bill's work, no matter if it makes sense on a show or not, is seriously inspiring.

    Ok, I really, really like the hull design of Concept D for the 2260s Stargazer! It stands out, and I think it needs to be used for future designs! Each of the other designs were still pretty cool, and look like nice support cruisers for the late TOS era. I also like how the B concept resembles the Cardenas class, and I think it would have been cool to actually modify her as a refit of the Cardenas, and create some continuity there, while Concept C is what appears to be a Constellation class Mk-I. I like the idea that the Constellation that we see in TNG is a VERY old design, and makes more sense to have them around at least a decade before the Excelsior class.
    Also, I usually look to aircraft when I have an artist's block, but usually towards more modern fighters, and lifting body designs. That, and Japanese science fiction anime designs.
    I'm not liking how the Titan was renamed the Enterprise-G, and I think that a brand new design should have been made for that exact purpose, but that's not Bill Krause's fault, and the Shangri-La is a still a cool design.

    • @TychoYard
      @TychoYard 8 месяцев назад +1

      Some of Stargazer concepts were based on a variety of previous TOS concept work I had done for the sake of this expediency. Concept B uses a hull from the Repulse, Concept D is an Arielle-class science ship concept with nacelles from the Endurance, Concept E is the Sentinel light cruiser hull and Concept F is an early version of the Wasp which would eventually develop into the Duderstadt-class Intrepid seen in episode 305.

    • @assemblyrequired7342
      @assemblyrequired7342 8 месяцев назад +1

      @@TychoYard Hey, it's always cool to hear from you! And it is always a pleasure to hear about the process that goes into design! It's also interesting that you took a "throw everything at the wall, and see what sticks", even though most of the concepts look like they would have made a for nice Stargazer nonetheless.
      Concept B, even though it uses assets from another design, still looks great, and has a nice, muscular profile. The Cardenas class similarities might be a coincidence, but hey, sometimes that's what happens in real life.
      And finally, the Arielle class has such a cool configuration, and I just love that pointy bow! So sleek! It reminds me a lot of fan and beta canon designs for the late 24th/early 25th Century that eschew the traditional saucer for more arrow-shaped primary hulls, and I do think that a descendent of the design would fit in nicely with (up-to-now) Beta Canon designs like the Vesta and Merian classes.
      And thanks again for sharing!

    Not a fan of the Neo-Connie/Connie III. Though to be fair, not a fan of "retro" styling designs in Picard S3 in general, because it feels odd with all the design evolution, etc over the decades to be "you know what, let's toss all that out and use styles from 100 years ago, ignoring all we've learned about warp field engineering since."
    I do, however, really like the Shangri-La and Radiant classes, so there's that.

    • @XTINFILM
      @XTINFILM 8 месяцев назад +1

      Endurance is far too big for Discovery era (Crossfield class also far too big - Constitution should dwarf everything).
      Anything that size should be in the operational era of the Excelsior class, and use that design language.

    He didn't design the future he made a ship that is a throwback to the past designs. That is a massive step back, the designs should incorporate old designs but are a very clear progression. That was the opposite of this ship.

  • @BullGator-kd6ge
    @BullGator-kd6ge 8 месяцев назад +6

    I am the firmest believer they should’ve kept the Stargazer from Season 2 as the hero ship of Season 3 as it has more ties to Picard than the Titan ever did. And in doing so, they could’ve spared themselves the effort of wrangling a 23rd century design into the 25th century and passing it off to perplexed audiences.

      @@korypedersen9768 I’m glad I’m not the only one. The Stargazer and Inquiry redesign are my only favorite ships to come out Picard excluding ones made for STO originally.
      On a similar note, I’m just venting at this point, the Enterprise-F being decommissioned early should’ve been the Enterprise-E. That way, it doesn’t leave its fate ambiguous (Unless you’ve seen ST Prodigy), it lets the fans and audiences imagine what the ship did in nearly 3 decades of service, and in the finale could’ve made way for the Enterprise-F without taking the spotlight away from the characters.

    • @korypedersen9768

      @@BullGator-kd6ge I agree again!! While I got a good hearty laugh out of Worf's defensive one-liner, retiring the Enterprise F before we even saw it on screen is a damn shame. They thought they were throwing us a bone, but honestly, it just reminded me of what we should have gotten. In STO, the Enterprise F was just getting started during the Picard S3 timeline, right? It's just ... undeniably nicer and more elegant than anything produced for screen lately.

    • @BullGator-kd6ge
      @BullGator-kd6ge 8 месяцев назад +1

      @@korypedersen9768 In the STO timeline, the Enterprise-F was commissioned in 2409 while in Prime it’s in 2386, two years after the E’s damage beyond repair thanks to the Living Construct. But to me that is indicative of the problem of the showrunners, and by extension, Starfleet running through starships.
      With these canon dates in mind, this means the Enterprise-E only served for 12 years and the F for 15. And for another example, Season 3 introduced the Voyager-B. It isn’t specified on when it was commissioned, but assuming it’s the same year as the show, that means the Voyager-A due to be introduced in Prodigy 2 served for, at most, 17 years.
      I remember either Dave Blass or Terry Matalas addressing this as it’s not about how old a ship is, but rather it’s mileage which is true but considering these ships are supposed to last several decades, it isn’t a good look to me.

Most FASA stuff doesn’t do that, and it’s actually entertaining to compare some of their more goofy ideas with their better ideas. My main complaint with FASA is their ortho views don’t match up! If i do a model I picky about getting those 3 or more views to match up, and FASA three views are about the worst Ive seen lol!

    @DoremiFasolatido1979 8 месяцев назад +2

    Because I know how much know-nothing producers interfere with the whole process, I don't really blame him.
    But...having seen certain design concepts of ships for other shows, from other designers over the years, I also can't really let him off the hook, either.
    I didn't really have a problem with the ships in Picard being so similar in a lot of ways. Like the "copy/pasta" fleet as a concept didn't bother me. That's how a navy is. Every ship of a given role is nearly identical to every ship of that role, even in other nations. And the versatility of future technology is only going to increase that circumstance, not alleviate it.
    I had a problem with them just being badly designed ships in the first place. The Inquiry-class had a few neat concepts to it...but just looked weird...and it sure as shit wasn't a warship.
    Then in season 2 with that World-Razer thing...wtf? That thing was like an especially stupid version of K.I.T.T.'s Pursuit Mode on a Galaxy Class. Whoever did that needs to be barred from ever doing the work on any show, ever again. Whoever requested/approved it should be exiled. And I say that as a non-fan. I like Star Trek...but I don't do fandom. It's just a show. It, nor anything else, will ever be more. Nothing is sacred.
    I didn't care for the pseudo-retro design of the Titan-A (now Enterprise-G...which is just annoying for a whole other reason) at first, but it doesn't really bother me. I wound up more bothered by the Sagan and Echelon class ships. That was a little TOO similar. Same size, exactly the same shape, but just missing two nacelles? I mean...at least cut off some of that blocky ass to change up the profile slightly. Rescale it so it's smaller and has a different window layout as a result, and so on.
    It makes sense that ships would follow a lineage, or design philosophy for a given era, but that...was pushing it.
    Didn't care much either way about the Romulan ships, but I wasn't impressed. The Shrike looked intimidating, but mostly just that. It didn't actually look dangerous. Thin, flimsy, inefficient. A powerful ship...but not any sort of warship.
    Nothing about any of the ships of Discovery or Picard have impressed me in the slightest. Star Trek has always had a problem with really stupid designs...and it just seems to be getting worse. That's what happens when you don't follow a consistent set of constraints.
