      I agree. When parts are changed out on ANY vessel in real life, there will be small changes in angles, materials, and especially underlying parts. When engineers find ways to make little improvements, those improvements have a cascade effect. Change a few pieces of important components, the other components surrounding it might need to change too.

      @Collin S. People are nitpicking the crazy maneuverability of the ship and I think this along with a few other details and assumptions basically cover that criticism. The entire star drive is almost certainly an upgraded version compared the the D. And that's where all the power is coming from, iirc Geordi mentions that a lot of the saucer is incomplete, I like to believe that it's mostly empty space with a lot of the modules pulled to gain access to the structure. It is likely massing many many thousands of tons less than normal.
      I think a bit of dialog about narrowing structural integrity and inertial dampers to crucial items like the hull and frame it's self and anything holding a critical system combined with some shots of interior spaces being absolutely wrecked by their maneuvers would have covered the critique and added a bit of drama and tension. The issue really being that there seemed to be little risk or effort put into that fight. If the ship was being pushed well past redline and suffering actual damage it would have only been more epic.

In spite of this, however, I personally enjoyed seeing Data maneuvering the D tightly through the Borg Cube, and I think they gave a good enough explanation for it to suspend disbelief: Data’s new body, much more human-like than his previous one, yet with the same astronomical computational ability. Even Data admitted that it was statistically improbable to tightly maneuver such a massive ship into the core of that Borg cube, but unlike the Data from the past, he now has a “gut,” and he made a human-like decision to listen to that “gut.” I think his “gut” feeling came from knowing in that moment that he had beyond-superhuman reflexes and computational ability, and therefore felt confident that he could throw the rule book out the window and maneuver that ship to unknown limits beyond any textbook or the wildest imagination of any human.
      And that power slide maneuver in the scene where they pick up Jack, Picard, Riker, and Worf wasn’t Deanna- Data was still flying, with Deanna mostly guiding Data to their location ;)

But the obvious reason why ships didn't move as fluent in the 80s/90s, is because they were working with large physical models, which may be harder to rotate, move the cameras around etc. Now with CGI, this makes things a whole lot easier, and probably as it always was intended.

      They were lit in ds9, never tng. Riker said that line in best of both worlds but no exterior shots of the Enterprise ever revealed that. No shot ever in the series ever showed the saucer impulses engines lit except when they were separated. So no they are not wrong

    • @zhenka1982

      @@ericmooney5740 DS9 and TNG and Voyager exist in the same canon universe. You can't really separate them like that--just because you didn't see something on screen during TNG (because the visual effects budget and cgi capabilities were rudimentary in the early 90s).
      I am not saying you necessarily had to have the saucer impulse engines lit up. But the explanation that they weren't lit up in TNG as the reason "why" doesn't make any sense.
      TNG also made it seem like starfleet had some number of dozens of ships. 40 starships engaged the borg at wolf 359. Shelby tells picard in the end of Best of Both worlds that "we'll have the fleet back up and running inside a year". Which seemed like more confirmation of the total number of ships available.
      We know from DS9 that the reality is, starfleet had thousands of ships. These kinds of discrepancies are explained "in universe".. i.e. Hansen simply meant they only had 40 starships near by.
      By the same token, trying to explain something is "TNG only" doesn't make sense "in universe".
      Now, of course :) non of this matters. Picard is a stylized version of TNG era start trek. It doesn't really follow any canon rules. I mean, the galaxy class ships are now retired? :) After 25 years? even though they were suppose to last for like 150+ years.

    I understand why they rechristened the Titan A. It was the second last ship Picard and his crew served on. They could not have just built any ship to honor the Enterprise and her crew but had to choose a ship that is related to their final mission, a ship Picard has an emotional connection to. It's the ship that brought him to his son. And without the tiny Titan the Galaxy would not have gone on her final mission. Let's say the D had to step in when the Titan was facing a mission too large for her. See it this way.
    P.S. And also, the Enterprise G is a NEO-CONSTITUTION Class ship. Back to where it all began.

The key giveaway is the extruded window frames. That closeup shot had no extruded frames, had completely different designs to the escape pods, and was also ruined with gamer lens flares on the nacelles and had generally poor texturing throughout which made the hull look like a jigsaw puzzle with black lines around the edges of every piece. I would say that the closeup shot was either added much later, or much earlier in a different VFX run.

I doubt this has any veracity in anything considered canon, but I once found a site (I thought it might've been on Ex Astrist Scientia, but either I'm wrong or it was since then removed) which presented the history of the Nebula prototype as a ship that originally used borrowed USS Galaxy saucer for test purposes. Like I said, this is super non canon, even with as loose as Trek is with its secondary canon, but I liked that idea so much I always ran with it. And in my headcanon it is exactly like that. Yes the Bussard Collectors have three light sources and the original Enterprise did not. But you must remember, that section of ship is not the original Enterprise but its the Syracuse. While the style can be close, it’s plausible (like in real life naval ships) that later constructions of the same class of ship received improvements. Even though there are 4 Iowa class battleships, all four have unique traits to each ship (as a real life comparison.) The Enterprise was the third Galaxy class ship of the line and should be considered an original ship to the original engineering specs. A design that is also much prior to any improvements that came later following the exposure to the Borg and the Dominion war.

    • @bmused55

      Bingo
      Some folk seem to think a design never changes. That a ship launched one year will still be identical 30 years later, that no improvements would be made, no modifications. This is unrealistic and naive.
      We saw in TNG the D got a new warp core. It's more than believable that as more Galaxy Class ships were built, lessons learned from the original 6 were used to modify and improve the later versions. These improvements would then later be retrofitted to the older frames. The class WAS designed to be modular and accept upgrades.
      Had the Enterprise-D not been mostly destroyed and written off in Generations, she may have received these upgrades at some point.
      The Arleigh Burke class of US Destoyers is another example. The newest ones are still of that class, but feature better technology than the original batch. Look fairly similar outwardly, but have many changed internally.

    Also thought final shot with Enterprise and Titan was a call back to final shot from The Undiscovered Country. One of the final shots with TOS “on board” the Enterprise A, matched with Sulu’s Excelsior. To me it’s what I saw and appreciated the nod of the cap.

    For added context for these kinds of shows, VFX is usually done by multiple VFX studios at once (ILM is just one of hundreds in the industry), it’s very expensive, hard to coordinate and usually needs to be done in less time than is ideal. So there’s always going to be a lot of inconsistencies in terms of detail and quality. The Marvel films are a really notable example.

    At least one galaxy had all the impule engines on in ds9 and since its the dominion war variant, I always took it as one of the upgrades it had. The class clearly had been upgraded since atleast one had one the the all good things upgrades on but it had been flipped 180° (if I remember correctly) so the class itself probably got upgraded to have all 3 impulse engines on but since its the original primary Hull it made sense for them not to be on

    • @90lancaster
      @90lancaster Год назад

      The "expanded canon" / Fanon for the Galaxy is that the later ones had all 3 Impulse engines on all the time at sublight an extra torpedo launcher added to the back of the saucer (not visible when combined) and more of the interior space was not filled up (no civilians either).
      One would presume they also added holo emitters and other improvements.
      Now since the Galaxy class type the Enterprise saucer is is so old, it's reasonable for them to be off. but if it was a later one i'd strongly suggest they should be on.
      One could argue reasons why they might be off or on on a case by case basis too they might be using the reactors for a secondary purpose and decided to have the propulsion on too for example.
      I am frankly not the least bit bothered either way and wouldn't consider it an 'error' either way.

    I like how people complain, yet they clearly forget a few things..
    Firstly, Picard was shot in 4K so the upscale and detail of the Enterprise would be significantly better, yes it's on Amazon in HD, but I'm guessing they'll release a 4K edition soon enough so they'll want to take advantage of the upscale, including the ships.
    Geordi also pointed out he'd been rebuilding the ship for the last 20 years, he doesn't explain if he did it on his own or he had help, so assume he did it with very minimal staff and probably as a side project when not doing other duties. Big ship to repair if on ones own. He'd probably have the best schematics and, will be working from memory too, so that could be explained for any subtle differences in rebuild.
    The only complaint I have of episode 10 was the way it flew around in the Borg cube, Data flying skill or not, the Enterprise never flew like that. Although, quite like the 180 turnaround when it sat above Picard, Jack, Riker and Worf to beam them out. Reminded me of Voyager.

  • @jrvthatsme
    @jrvthatsme Год назад +1

    There is a question from a logic point of view for when Data flew the Enterprise inside the borg (I'm assuming is was an entire unimatrix). Why would they not have separated the saucer section and just flown the drive section in. It would have been easier to get through all that being smaller than an entire galaxy class ship after all, and everything depended on them succeeding. I know the show makers wanted to give the D a fantastic final heroic moment, but it still.

  • @mattlawler8794
    @mattlawler8794 Год назад

    Couldn’t you argue that the ship could have just as easily kept the Syracuse name? Assuming that most of the Star drive section was originally part of that ship. Given that the saucer section crash landed on the surface of a planet, it would be reasonable to assume that bottom one or two decks may have been shaved off by the saucer sliding across the ground. Based on what the bridge looked like at the end of Generations, I would guess that the interiors of all the other rooms would have been ripped apart as well when the saucer finally stopped.
    Now that Paramount+ wants to make a stand alone Star Trek movie every couple of years, I would love to see Levar Burton Star in a documentary style movie explaining how the saucer was recovered. Then we could also get to learn how much of the Syracuse was used to recreate the Enterprise D. It could be possible that every Galaxy class starship (maybe some Nebula class ships as well) that was damaged beyond repair during the Dominion War donated parts to rebuild the Enterprise.

    The Enterprise D with the Syracuse stardrive could fly like that as we've never seen a fully capable movement of the ship like that, and it's in space after all. The only weird thing is that when they beam the crew back up, there should have been a huill breach on the cube, and all the air should have rushed out. They could have tossed in a line, 'we've passed through their atmospheric shield, and most of it is still there. Our people are down there' or something.

They also glowed a more orange hue VS the main impulse engine. But the big D did not have them active while the saucer was connected. Maybe later versions did for greater speed and maneuverability....who knows.

    All those little details CAN and DO change on real-world ocean craft and space craft. When something is replaced on a a real-world vessel, there will be little changes and details that are not going to remain consistent. I mean just for a funny example, I got a new catalytic converter installed on my car, and there are changes to the outside of the housing. I mean, just get your windshield wipers changed and they are going to look different from the ones you originally had. It makes sense that the overall shape will be similar, but not as consistent as you might expect.

    5:24 wait 10 forward is BELOW Picard's quarters, OH DEAR, how often did he take a broom and angrily knock downwards off screen lol
    12:08 also a note with the ILM model there, what you forget is that that version was ment to be used with other ships in DS9 so the render detail would be tuned down for optimization in the battle scenes, as they never had any names, as you gotta figure the computer can only do so much, especially in 1998 with rendering ships ontop of each other
    and in composite too, as you gotta figure they probably had to animate one ship with another, then layer this, layer that
    vs say the USS challenger in Voyagers timeless, which was much more detailed with the name and everything on the bottom
    also apparently the stardrive came off of the ship he said he took the engines from, so what he got is what he got, and they raised the detail to give the ship definition on screen
    as the thing was shown in 4K at a special premier, and it was ment to highlight the difference between the weathered and matted saucer, and the glosy and fresh stardrive that you could say was fitted with abliative hull plating.
    also I kinda think it would have been funny if it turns out that they just missed a shakedown cruise with the saucer, hence why Jordi was so cross at picard showing up
    hence why all systems were go, like he just got the thing sorted and then the guy himself shows up lol

    @7:03 What they did it perfect in the movie. Using the impulse engines from the would not provide maneuverability; that is what the thrusters are for. In fact the faster speed would have made it harder to maneuver.
    What they should have done is separated from the saucer to ride the extra mass that would have made the star drive section more maneuverable and to better fit in the tighter spaces. The torpedos launch from the star drive section after all. It would have have been nice to see separation, however better cinematically to have everyone on the main bridge.
    If course has it been the star drive section only, would it have have really been the U.S.S Syracuse flying around since the star drive hull is from the Syracuse? They should have separated the saucer.

    In DS9 during the Dominion battles, the saucer impulse engines were on. :) The internet apocrypha technobabble reason at the time was due to more power redundancy and maneuverability. Since the Enterprise D was destroyed before this implementation, and since LaForge restored it to the pre Generations spec, it makes sense for the saucer impulse engines to be off.
