The Captain's quarters on the Enterprise in Stranger New Worlds is pretty warm, inviting and homey while being modern and current. Perhaps they can bring that aesthetic to other bridges on the ships while keeping it functional. The lighting and cinematography is critical - Bridges like the D if lit wrongly looks like a set and becomes dated. The D was lit and filmed pretty well here although some would disagree saying it was too dark. It's darker in comparison to the older shows but it is not dark per se. It is pretty cinematic and gives more depth and dare I say it, respect.

Especially since when the Enterprise D went down the bridge had had a refit with consoles on the side wall and an elevated platform for the command chair. Geordi and his team would have been not only restoring the ship but reverse engineering it back to its 2370 appearance. Presumably Geordi would have had to source the parts from the fleet or replicate custom parts so that definitely covers the little differences.

  • @tompinkerton8099
    @tompinkerton8099 Год назад +15

The key point to remember here is that this is not supposed to just be the original Enterprise-D bridge, preserved all these years unchanged, but a restoration by Geordi. Remember that sometime between "All Good Things..." and "Generations," the bridge had been changed rather significantly. And then in, in Generations, it gets basically demolished by the crash on Veridian III. So there was probably very little of the original to work with. So it makes sense that every single little detail is not going to be 100% perfect. I think from an in-universe perspective, Geordi did a fantastic job restoring it, and from a real-world standpoint, the production team pulled off an amazing feat recreating such an iconic set so accurately.
My only beef, really, is not in the set itself but in the lighting. I understand television has changed. But this is supposed to be an old ship from a different era. I think they should have lit it the same as it was lit back in the TNG days. Just my personal opinion.

  • @nathand.9969

As a note, the fact that this set was shot digitally while the original set was shot on film will change how the set looks.
One for instance is that on film light spots get washed out and you lose detail, while with digital media you lose detail in the dark places, this is why in the TV show you could see detail below the command chairs, while with Picard it's much darker below the chairs.

The biggest change was in season 1 the wall behind the chairs and underneath them was painted white and they were anchored to that short wall instead of the floor, to appear like they were "floating", this became a problem with larger actors sitting on the chairs and so when they changed out the captain's chair they painted that lower wall part a darker colour and then securely bolted the chairs to the floor on pedestals beneath them rather than having them cantilever out from the wall behind them.
They faithfully recreated that change in Picard that matches most of the seasons, the little chairs off to the side of the main three changed and season-to-season, but those seemed to be able to be changed according to need from scripts, like a modular ottoman chair lol

If you look at the gray areas around the turbolifts, they have a lot of pink in them. So I'm betting that they used a pinkish lens filter in those shots where it looks less yellow. That more yellowy wall color may be correct - you're just not used to seeing it without the color tnit of the lens filter appied to it.

There was more subtlety available than simple lens filters. There was a process known as color timing where the final print could be adjusted to taste when it was produced from the camera negative. Whether there was enough budget or time available to do this on a TV series is another matter but if you look in the credits of movies shot on film you will see someone credited as the color timer.

Something to consider about the lights and grading is that PIC is shot and graded in 10-bit HDR. With the new set, the thing that sticks out to me is soft focus and bloom.
Part of that is likely post process. But another part of it is also that the TV seasons are using some kind of strong lighting from behind the camera man to clearly illuminate the actors. In the 'Picard' wide shot, there isn't a strong frontal illumination light going on, and that makes it feel darker.

I don’t know if anyone else has pointed this out yet, BUT… Geordi La Forge, not even 30 seconds from the reveal, stated that this is the saucer section that Troi had “crashed” on Veridian III.
Now, what that means is this: the Enterprise-D saucer section from the 1994 feature film, Star Trek: Generations is what crashed on Veridian III. Now, what THAT means is that THIS IS NOT THE CORRECT BRIDGE! THAT bridge (from Generations) was a “refit,” and had steps between the captain’s/XOs chairs and the ops/con stations, which they, too, were closer together, among other things. Again, it was a refit. The bridge from Picard, however, is meant to look like the one from the TNG series. I only mention it because Geordi just said it was THAT Enterprise; the saucer section that crashed on Veridian III in Star Trek: Generations.
So, if it truly came from Veridian III, then it SHOULD HAVE looked like it did in Generations.

That Star Trek Experience bridge recreation is beautiful. It's so close it doesn't matter if the light bulbs are too yellow. They had two on the Experience. One of them was taken away to replace it for the Borg 3D ride, and packed away, presumably to Paramount, and then the other stuff was destroyed in 2008 when the ride got taken down entirely.
They must have saved that bridge. It showed up on the Tours too. It's the bridge we got to walk all over back in 2006 or so. Same bridge. I sat at every console and got to look it over.
If it's not, it's a near perfect recreation of the season 7 bridge from the Vegas ride.

Although some parts like the ceiling were missing is conceivable that Paramount had access to some of the original parts. Anyway they did a minucius rebuild and any color changes or difference in tones can be easily explained out by for example aging materials getting yellowish in color, or some parts like the carpet being replaced during the restoration. Also editing, color grading, type of media, cameras can give an image a different tint.

When making a recreation of something as complex as a bridge scenario that was literally destroyed decades ago, inconsistencies are prone and expected to happen, and I don't fault them for that. They did do an amazing job, regardless. Though if we think in-universe, I believe it is safe to say that such differences are due to the whole ship's restoration process. The saucer section _was_ severely damaged and the shots of the bridge showed the thing completely wrecked. So in-universe, we can understand that Geordi had to replace almost everything inside the saucer: Carpets, chairs, consoles, screens, panels, lights, etc. Like restoring an old car, get everything absolutely the way they were is nearly impossible. Even the own factory (on rare occasions when the factory makes the restoration of a car for someone) often doesn't get everything exactly as they were when the vehicle was new. Real world-wise, they did a fantastic job.
I haven't watched Picard yet (I'm still new to Trek and only watched TNG and DS9 and am about half-way through Voyager at the moment, as well as having watched the first two TNG movies, so far) and to be honest, wasn't really interested in it, but this here changed my mind. The designers DID change the dimensions of the set in that the back half of the set is higher than the TNG bridge. LeVar mentioned the ramps being steeper now. The wooden arch sits higher than in TNG that's why you can see more of the rear stations through it, when the camera is on Picard's chair. In the same shots you can also tell the arch is taller now since the captain's chair headrest doesn't reach as close to the arch's front access panel outlines as it did in TNG. Some minor changes in the light bars of the side panels (tng blue / picard yellow hue) and in the carpet design where red meets gray (tng had straight lines / Picard has curves). Minor things. The designers truly did an amazing job on this set. Props to the set builders for their attention to detail.

The Syracuse took a Jem Hadar ship to its saucer section during the Dominion war which destroyed most of the forward sections but left the bridge intact.
That bridge is now sat atop the Enterprise-D saucer since the Enterprise bridge in GEN was smashed to bits with gaping holes ripped in it.
This also explains how the Syracuse stardrive section was available.
Most of the Syracuse saucer wasn’t salvageable, but the bridge and engines were.
So, as we know Galaxy class bridges are swappable modules, Geordi simply swapped out the smashed GEN bridge and replaced it with the Syracuse bridge, while only making a few minor alterations (dedication plaque, names of the ship on consoles, etc.).
Thus, any discrepancies in the bridge can be explained away due to the fact that it’s not the same bridge from TNG. It’s a very similar module from a different galaxy class starship.
*disclaimer: the above may be headcanon

10:00 You can see on the backs of the consoles that they're more in shadow on Picard and you also noticed the shadow on the crew as well.
11:50 Where the bezel of the viewscreen meets the ceiling illuminated area is more curved on TNG.
On the right panelling beside the door you can see a block shadow cast indicating that there was a spotlight on the far left of the set
Again, warm lights above the doors in the Picard version as opposed to cold lights.
Slightly sharper edges on the front consoles.
One other thing I noticed was the warm light on the Picard version in the front console stand as opposed to the cold blue light in the TNG version.
I think lighting is one of the key things and it also affects the colour grading. All looks a little more movie like with fewer lights used to give more contrast rather than a more ambient feeling of the TNG.
Absolutely fantastic job however! So soooo much better than I expected. Truly remarkable and great that they didn't mix and match different season's versions of the bridge! • @redrob41

From what I understand of the technical manuals (which isn't extensive), the ships were modular in design so that entire parts, like the bridge, could be removed and replaced as a whole. Perhaps between "All Good Things" and "Generations" the shipyards refit the bridge module (which accounts for the extra work stations on the side) and put the old bridge module in storage. When Geordi rebuilt it in Hanger 12, he could have reused the old module instead of trying to rebuild the destroyed one. As for the color, he only ever saw the D bridge with his VISOR (with the crazy way that it synthesized every end of the spectrum), and now he's looking at it with his ocular implants.
Behind the scenes, the way they light the set is different now. For TNG on tv they used lighting stands behind the camera, and you can see the multiple, harsher shadows behind Picard when he's sitting the his chair (14:30). Also, the color grading is quite different as can be seen by the skin tones; Picard's skin is much warmer in TNG; much cooler in ST:P. Everything else follows suit with the warm/cool balance.

The two bridges built to handle the volume of visitors at the Star Trek experience were very good, but one notable difference is there was very little rise from the front at the bridge up to the rear, probably for handicapped access reasons, the top the captain's chair almost hits the top of the horseshoe because there is very little slant to the side ramps in the Las Vegas versions.
Other than that they were amazing.

Early on through up at least to The Defector, the gray carpet was changed to a very light gray. But after The Defector and definitely on The Best of Both Worlds, the gray carpet went back to a darker gray. I myself liked the lighter gray because of the contrast it gave. I can tell they didn't use LED screens, noticed that right away, all the other lcars on LED screens are too sharp, flat and pixelated, are desaturated, and fade quickly at any angle where the originals had bright warm lights behind them with much smoother sand organic corners, and look good at every angle since they were actual lights and had depth to their construction.

One comparison is missing: the generations bridge was modified with additional stations and steps.
In universe they probably switched out the bridge module for a newer version right before the movie. After the D crashed the old module was sent to the museum and was in better shape than the one that went down with the saucer.

The obvious thing is that the lights on the Conn and OPS stations should be blueish like the ones in the alcoves and on the Captains chair

I’ve noticed that the BTS pics coming out look much brighter and closer to how it looked in the 90s. Be curious to see that analysis too.

9:00 season 1 and 2 seems to have the desks where Geordi and Data sit angled but starting on season 3 it seems they made them straight, and looks like Picard's version is also going with the season 3 and onwards with the front desks.
The chairs on the other hand I see that the Picard chairs look closer to the S1 and S2 chairs.

I watched the segment on the Ready Room where Wil Wheaton and Mike Okuda were touring the set. Back during TNG, everything was lit with neon lighting. They attempted to recreate with LEDs, it’s not quite right, but I live that they really tried to be as accurate as possible.

It's so great to see the Enterprise -D Bridge in Picard S3.

I noticed that the two asymmetrical black “rectangles” above/behind the captains chair are etched into the material. In the original they were just painted on.

If you're getting your screenshots from the Blu Ray, those were remastered from the original film and re-color-graded. So there may have been more consistency between seasons as they originally aired and appeared on DVD.

The thing that stood out for me beyond anything else was the colour of the light of the two front consoles. Very much bluer in TNG, and looking somehow aged and yellowed in Picard - I suppose perhaps deliberately?

One note I will make is - I *think* - that the lighting changed during the progress of the scene - not just the initial ramp-up but a gradual, secondary, build up towards the end of the scene. It's subtle and it might just be my brain filling in gaps but I think the lighting goes from 0-80% in a few seconds, then the last 20% over the course of the following 2 minutes
