I train in mma, and palm strikes are extremely underestimated. A person isnt able to do straight shots with mma gloves on since the wrist is locked, and blocked with the constriction of tape and glove, so hooking palm strikes are the only option, however, if mma competitions were bare knuckle again, or even similar to combat jiu jitsu which allows palm strikes while on the ground, you'd see them utilized alot more. It's not just for the safety of the hand, it's because of how stiff of a shot they can be. All a person has to do is watch some of Bas Ruttens old fights in pancrase, which only allowed palm strikes to the head while bare knuckle to see their effectiveness. He had many knockouts while using them. Theirs something unique about a palm strike aswell. The force seems to penatrate alot more rather than just disperse on the surface like a punch does. Which means if you can catch a person's liver with one, it can be a fight ender. You can also hit behind the ear alot easier with a hooking palm strike, something that's very difficult to do with a closed fist, unless you bend the wrist, which is dangerous, and tenses up alot of muscles. Bas rutten the legend himself said he doesn't know why mma fighters arent using that technique yet, since like I mentioned earlier, they can still do hooking palm and forearm strikes behind the ear, which is a knockout button. Fists have uses aswell, but have more of a close range in fighting advantage. If a person's good with their elbows and knees, they don't need to rely on punching with a fist. Me and some buds have experimented by sparring with palms, and these are the techniques and advantages we found. For one, if you make your opponent cover up their face, when you go to strike, you can reach for their opposite arm to you, and from their, pull it down, while striking with either another palm strike in the opening, or else an elbow. Regardless, if done right, it leaves a good opening. Another trick which Ken Shamrock would do, but works better with palms is, you pretend to go for a low tackle, in terms for everyone to understand, otherwise I'd just say a shot, by looking at their legs for a second, and lowering your stance. That will instantly drop even a trained fighters hands. In that instant, you than spring up with your already open hand, and jam it into their face. Alot of benefits to this technique, it gets a taller person lowering themselves for you, opens up their face completely, and if practiced and done right, you can push off with your leg and put your whole body behind it with force, plus the palm strike is a very stiff, and safe strike, it can handle that force if it's alot. A punch at the angle might buckle the wrist, etc.

      Ambidextrous and trained
Never trained in MMA but consider MMA a training tool.
Your comment is highly underrated and I commend you.
I will never not use palm strikes. Over 40+ years in this and it's hilarious that this is even a discussion.
I just knew when Bas presented the palm they would pay attention but I was wrong.
I can minimize damage to myself and maximize the damage output.
The things I was trained in were never about sports to begin with so palm strikes were second nature.
Once again your comment is highly underrated and just plain reality.
      Well done

I have been training in martial arts for about 40 years and teaching for over 20. I am former NYPD and I teach a lot of women’s self-defense and law-enforcement self-defense and handcuffs and techniques. I one hundred percent agree with what you say. The one caveat that I would add is if the person throwing punches has former training or continues to train on punches, that is fine, but most people do not. It is easy to fracture your hand or sprain your wrist by punching someone wrong. Especially if you punch them in the head (missing the face). For someone who is not dedicating a lot of time to sparring or practicing a jab cross, palm blows are more effective. It also gives you a higher probability of not being injured. You may not have the same “end the fight” capability as a punch but if you have to defend yourself against more than one person and you injure your hand doing the first jab cross, you are in trouble defending yourself against that second person. I always stress palm blows or hammer fist strikes afterwards for the person not dedicating a lot of time training.

Palm strikes, hammer and elbow strikes are so effective. A friend almost lost his hand to an infection after striking a creep in the mouth with his fist. The guy's tooth cut my friends hand and he didn't immediately clean the wound. After several days in the hospital the doctors were able to save his hand. I had no idea this could ever happened.

Ha! EXCELLENT! When I was in college, I took martial arts classes. Long story, I'll spare you, but the instructor was impressed so he gave me private lessons FOR FREE! He taught me lots of stuff and, no, I won't share. It's really gruesome, but this was my first lesson. Not fists, palms and to the nose. Also, groin kick first. Don't lose balance, you don't even have to make contact but make them THINK that it's coming. You barely have to raise your leg. Get them to bend forward a bit and then strike. Also, practice until it comes naturally. If you must, use a wall. After your second power strike, spit in their face. Repeat. I am now OLD, but it doesn't take a lot of strength. It takes balance, knowledge and, most importantly, mindset. And remember, EVERYONE gets hurt in a fight. Even if you don't get a scratch, there is mental trauma. Believe me, I know. Best advice? Don't get in a fight.

I have been involved in martial arts from an early age (I'm 68) and I wholeheartedly agree with having just a couple of techniques that you can do in your sleep. For example...in Okinawan karate, we might practice 15 or more ways to deal with a straight thrust from a knife. 15 to 20 techniques to deal with slashing attacks. 15-20 ways to deal with _______(fill in the blank) It's much MUCH better to have just a few "tricks" that work in a variety of situations.

I read an article you shared about how Paul Vunak disarmed multiple people in a bar, I just wanted to ask was it multiple people with knives, and other weapons or multiple gunmen? Great job covering the basics. My favorite fighting moves are illegal boxing football and pro wrestling moves. Simply grabbing an attackers shirt on the outside of their shoulder and pulling is enough to take them off balance sometimes they will even trip and fall. Also hammer fist which are hand chops with a closed fist. These are great to use on someone that you just pushed or pulled off balance. Even if you opponent is bigger and stronger than your the time to push or pull them is when they are moving their feet especially when they have one foot off the ground. When pushing just like in football drive with your entire body and extend your arms at the moment of impact. Also you can push with one hand and pull with the other. I’ve done this to turn sideways opponents who were sneak attacking me then extended my arms and they went flying tripping over their own feet.

Looking for this kind of video because yesterday I just had an encounter in a parking situation - the guy in the car was pissed because I took his lot but it was not intentionally be me but rather a misunderstanding. When I left my car he already rushed towards me hurling like a wounded Bull and I was really shocked. Luckily I did watch this kind of video some time ago and remembered to put hands up while retreating with legs spread out and asking him to calm down. But he continued coming closer and I wasn't sure if he's going to attack. Where I live things are "difficult" from a legal point of view especially in traffic situations and if YOU attack you can easily become the bad guy no matter how it started etc. Therefore I decided to not form a fist and keep hand open signaling pure defense. As he approached further I stuck him once with open palm somewhere around the collar/neck and it helped. He realised that I will not back down and act out of a solid defensive position. He even started to retreat still hurling like mad completely out of touch with the situation. Bottom line: after seeing this video I feel having done the right thing within the legal boundaries of my country (EU) anything more could have exposed myself to legal trouble if things would have escalated. I will do exercises along this line and prepare myself mentally for a similar situation taking advice from this video very seriously.

agreed, a kick shouldn't be at a target above the opponent's waistline (if they're still standing). should an opponent try to grab a kick you launched at their knee, for example, they probably have to bend forward a little bit...not great for their center of gravity balance.

Keep in mind what moves you forward to deliver that force from your arms. Your Legs=power, Your Abdominal strength=.being able to apply torque behind that leg power.
Your hands/arms are just the “tip of the spear”
Your legs & upper body “throw that “spear”” Striking involves ALL of you, so train ALL of you (sit-ups/squats). This includes training to avoid danger as best that you can (situational awareness/making use of your senses/planning ahead)

The basic technique is great especially if you only have a day or 2 to learn to fight. I believe if you are particularly strong/big guy should use a palm strike rather than a fist to avoid breaking your hand particularly when hitting the head. (Sumo wrestlers use palms only for this reason). Twice I have fractured my hand punching someone in the head in a street fight. The last street fight I had I used only my palms to avoid breaking my hand again and it worked great (I’m a 300lb lifter). In one street fight I had (was defending a woman) I got punched in my nose hard enough to break it but did not feel a thing until the fight was over, I was also unaware I broke my hand till the fight was over - neither slowed me down the slightest (compare that to training were a slight bump to the nose was an absolute show stopper for me - point is your body can switch off pain, at least mine can, when your life is at stake - which is why my aim is to concuss someone in a fight, as your body can’t switch that off). Also in the video, the stock footage at 2:00 the guy is striking the head with the outer 2 knuckles which is much more likely to result in a hand break - probably how I broke mine (the woman in the stock footage before that doesn’t look great technique either). If not using gloves should strike with 2 knuckles nearest the thumb (or even better use a palm strike).

Once the fight starts, if I don't take the guy down, the taller guy will have the advantage. So, any tactical advice for shorter people? I'm thinking strike with open palms, and follow through, charging into them as they fall/step backward. Don't give them a chance to realize that I am not going to go down without a fight, in which case their guard will be up and if they are skilled, they will apply all their techniques against me. Especially usefull for women who might lack the power of a man's Strike .
A double ripping verticle strike ( from top to bottom ) starting at the top of their face and eyes followed by double cross horizontal strikes across the face , can do lots of damage to your enemy eyes .

Very good...but I would disagree with the "its all you need to know" philosophy/comment.

I'd like to share some pertinent information from my own personal street fighting experience, it's not a good idea to punch someone in the mouth with your fist! Why? INFECTION! It happened to me. This scumbag sucker punched me and it was on! His teeth cut my knuckles while I returned punches and my hand had swollen up twice the size by the next day. The swelling started going up my forearm. I went to the doctor and got some antibiotics. It could probably happen with a palm strike. I prefer side palm strikes to the ears, nose, etc. stay away from the mouth! The human mouth is the nastiest part of the body. It contains so much bacteria. Be safe people. Thanks for this video, Mr. Hanson!

When i was in college a guy scaled up the side of the dorm, crawled thru the window and was waiting in the dark for me in my dorm room when i came in. He locked the door and started throwing me around ( he was my ex boyfriend). I reacted out of fear and punched his face when he came at me again. Stunned him, broke his nose.I unlocked the door and got out. People were trying to get in door and rescue me and the cops were on the way.Broke a bone in my hand cuz i did not know how to really punch but it gave me time to get out and away.

The problem with these types of training/trainers etc, is that they neglect proper stance, footwork, etc.
Ok, you're blasting the other guy with palm strikes, great! It DOES work, however, where's YOUR balance at?

This is definitely all good stuff. I will say though, people need to train going THROUGH the actually target. If you're used to pulling your punches out of habit, when SHTF, you'll do that and that's a bad day for you. js

Great advice , the palm strike is one of the easiest ways to defend yourself without breaking your hand or fingers. But seriously if the guy behind you is afraid of viruses and still wears a mask how can he stand up to a man ? All I would have to do is sneeze in his direction and he would run 😂

Personal safety is extremely important but I'd rather be sure before hitting someone that they have an intent to harm me.
Appreciate these training videos but not in favor of a blanket approach to attack first with a justification of personal defense.
