Skye Trail Part 2 - The Trotternish Ridge

- The most difficult section of the Skye Trail awaits. Steep ridgeline hills and low visibility coupled with driving wind and rain made the Trotternish Ridge slow, long, cold and bleak. Only a few momentary breaks in cloud cover showed the magnitude and scale of the landscape. The peninsula below to the NE seemed to stretch for miles.
The Old Man of Storr turned out to be shrouded in cloud, and by the time I reached the road I was completely washed up.
One of the best walks in Scotland and one of the best walks of my life. The Skye Trail takes you along the whole island in the Scottish Inner Hebrides archipelago. Starting in the north, I headed along the coast towards the Quirrang, an incredible landscape of jagged rock and amazing views before wild camping under the Trotternish Ridge. In this episode I continue along the Troternish Ridge, walk past the Old Man of Storr and end up wild camping roughly 3 miles east of Portree.
BTW, I MADE THIS INCREDIBLE BIT OF GEAR

just came across your channel, the way you vlog has a sort of gaming pov feeling which is sick. underated channel, big up!
Loving this series Russ. So much work goes into each episode. Gotta love the Scottish weather :-). ATB - Julia
Thanks Julia, you legend 🤙🤙🤙
Man - you are a hard core adventurer. I so respect what you are doing documenting this beautiful yet desolate landscape for others to follow. Overcoming all the challenges, extraordinary navigation let alone the midges OMG. Just incredibly put together with all the cameras and drone footage. Absolutely breathtaking. Congratulations on your achievements.
Wow epic scenery looks challenging in bad weather it seems to have a spooky vibe or was that the music and cos ive had a smoke very good russ really enjoyed it look forward to the next vid the Prometheus opening shot cool scenery
Epic place
Nice effort bro, I like your channel
Those views 🤤😍
This is great. I grew up on Skye and spent a lot of my teenage years walking and camping. This is bringing back memories of walking the part of the Trotternish ridge, first day was beautiful weather when camping at the Quiraing but the next was just rain and mist and zero view. I don't miss camping with the midges however. Tempted to try the Skye Trail next time I'm up visiting family.
Incredible scenery and well captured. Thanks for sharing and tolerating the midges.
Loving those views Russ. That bit of drone footage was magic! Look forward to seeing more yogi
Ahh hello mate! Thanks buddy, glad you enjoyed that. More to come, how's you dude?
Stunning footage 👌. Well done for getting through those conditions 👏.
Wonderful scenery mate and nice trail even though there isn't one lol. 19Miles, the toughest walk you have ever done. Thanks you just made the old man feel epic after last Saturday 17miles hike 🤣🤣🤣🤣👍
Haha yes mate couldn’t see a thing most of the time, terrible weather pure bog, mud and crap across that ridge. 🤙🤙🤙
That's the UK for you and we won't have any other way lol. As long you enjoyed it that is the reward and hope u get back on PCT soon as I guess that is still on your plans mate 😀
Aw man, pity you couldn't get that view of the old man after all your effort. I was lucky twice up there. Magical. Justin.
Amazing, as always! Stunning scenery!
Thanks Soph! Haha eat them midges. I’d still class you as a vegetarian.
Straight to part 2 roll on part 3 this is pukka
you really got inspired me man.you re great!!!nice videos!!!
Stunning views. Great use of the drone. ATB. Grays
Those drone shots at the end mate! Nice work.
My wife has just spat her hot chocolate out at the hair in the bottom left 😂😂 especially when i said he has a taxi (our dog) hair and he's not even met taxi! Another brilliant film matey
mate that weather reminded me so much of my anglesey hike when the full storm hit! i feel your pain :-)
Nice, how much water did you have to carry? Is there water source along the trail where you can filter water?
Great vid I M planing to go there soon
The wettest and the most tiring section of the trail.. nice shot!
Ahh man it was mental. Visibility was about 10 metres most of the day. Nice one!
Those views at the end 😍
Thanks so much Paula!
Nice video buddy. epic drone shots😎I penciled✏️ this in on my places to visit after watching your last video the other day and this video just made it to being penned✒️ in now! Cheers for the video bud, looking forward to the next one 👍🏻 ATB George
D Fine Us tune was class wi the backdrop 🏴
Damn it’s a pretty place! Looks like you had it pretty bad for a while there. Hope you got that beer 🍺
Enjoy that beer my friend! 🍺👍
Thanks dude. I actually ended up camping a mile from Portree that evening. Didn’t have a drop of beer until the end 😭
Do you only take one Air 2 battery? And what case do you use to keep weight down? You say it's 1170g on your site, what does that include in total?
I take 3 batteries in total. Just added up from my weigh ins and realised I only accounted for 2. The number should be 1,366. That includes the drone, 3 batteries and the controller. I just used a Zpacks DCF packing pod and was totally fine on the Skye Trail. Will change that weight tomorrow. Must have built that page super late at night or something haha. Cheers.
really enjoying this route - cant wait until episode 3 ! Any chance you can go back so I can see what the Old Man of Stor actually looks like :-)
Ahh man I went back a couple of weeks later with my other half but still didn’t manage to reshoot the old man. Next time! 👍
You’ve actually got it in numerous shots 😎
Sweet drones and well put together!! But did you get the beer?? Leaving us on a cliff hanger for ep3 😂
Haha. Sheeeit. I actually ended up camping about a mile away from Portree. Didn’t get a single beer until the very end. 👍👍 cheers dude!
Russ, can you do a how to on your map graphic?
Probably not the place to ask this question but is there any reason I should not buy the MSR Elixir 2 V2 Tent ? I'm completely new to solo camping and am looking to buy a 2 Man 4 Season tent... I say 2 man but I mean me and the dog 😉
Sturdy tent for you and the dog. A friend of mine had a hubba bubba and rated it highly. I have a Tarptent Stratospire 2 which is a similar price point. Tom from Atom Packs had his for 6,000 miles.
How did the Helix perform Russ ? 👍🏼
I was completely soaked through by the time I got to the Storr. Definitely worth reproofing before a big hike. High winds and driving rain cut right through. If it wasn’t so windy it would have been a better experience with that jacket. My pockets actually filled up with water where the proofing inside the pockets was still good. Super comfy and very well made though. I’d give it a 7 out of 10.
The Trail Hunter thanks for that. Good video as always!
How did you go to the toilet at night with all those midges?
Haha. I used my cook pot. 🤪
@@thetrailhunter4469 now THAT'S ul dual use!
In a solo walk like this what’s your plan B if you fell and broke your leg do you have a sat phone or something
👋 yes. I make sure I understand escape routes on the map ahead and also have a Garmin InReach Mini. 👍
That weather would have me booking into the nearest hotel
Don’t come then. Your loss 🏴
Maybe, But some of us just aren’t built for harsh conditions. I get to enjoy
It from the videos though
@@claireemily1983 yeah, but it can’t all be wedding cake. That’s the beauty 🏴 go on Claire, come visit 😃
@@roddymcniven8734 aww shucks 😥
@@roddymcniven8734 aye, Scotland is gorgeous even in the wind and rain and clouds of midges.
I absolutely love your channel. I will keep watching even if you don't take my suggestion to heart. You do, however, make the same mistake so many other hiking vloggers make: You film your feet. Don't. Just ... Don't. No one wants to see your shoes, and why oh why would you film the rocks when there is scenery?
Also, it makes me nauseated, so I have to cover my eyes and that throws me out of the flow of the video.
Keep 'em coming, but please, please no more foot footage.
Thanks Kerri. I like to film the terrain I’m walking on to show others what to expect and I love geology and rock formations so much, I just have to film it all. 👍
