Skye Trail Part 1 - Wild camping under the ridge

- One of the best walks in Scotland and one of the best walks of my life. The Skye Trail takes you along the whole island in the Scottish Inner Hebrides archipelago. Starting in the north, I headed along the coast towards the Quirrang, an incredible landscape of jagged rock and amazing views before wild camping under the Trotternish Ridge. This long-distance walk isn't for the faint-hearted in poor conditions (to quote the guidebook) but embarking on a thru-hike of the Skye trail will be one that you'll never forget.
BTW, I MADE THIS INCREDIBLE BIT OF GEAR

EPIC hike so beautiful! I found your channel watching your hyper light bag review now watching more, Subbig!
Well this has been worth the wait 😉 solid work dude, loved them nice shots of the lookout. Whens part 2 coming out?!???
Ahh nice one dude. Glad you enjoyed that. Hopefully have part 2 out next week. You got any more vids coming out?
Loving the coastal vibes and epic scenery!!! Russ missed your cheeky convo and face bro this was brilliant. Quality filming, editing and vlog style, Roll on Episode 2 🙏👣📸
Thanks so much dude. Haha glad you enjoyed it. Part 2 coming soon.
Oh dude! Place looks like Jurassic Park. Definitely need to get myself there. Awesome video man! Damn those midges look mental! Canny wait for part deux 🤙
Ahh thanks so much mate. Sorry about the late reply, only just managing to catch up. Hope you’re good. 👍👍👍
Great video! Thinking of doing this this year. What time of year did you do it? 🤔
Midges looked horrendous!
Thanks BBWoolfy. Glad you enjoyed it, I did the Skye Trail in August.
“Just” what I’ve been looking for ‼️
Having watched your trekking poles vid & subscribing (ordered poles online then), I thought I’d have a look at your channel. Really liked the Sky trail vids. I’m just watching your 1st one and will then watch 2&3 B2B.
So many questions have I❓
Not in any order ….. where did/do you get your backing music? What drone do you have? Have you made a vid on the trekking poles tent (you have my interest here, as some of my “might” hike’s need a tent but my back pack is kinda full with film gear and your tent looks relatively easy/lightweight to pack away???
Really good stuff
Awesome video editing and incredible scenery!
I just want more of this :P
Ahh thanks so much. Much more coming soon.
Hello! Firstly, let me say that you had me cackling with all of your commentary about the midges! That looks absolutely horrible and I’ll be sure to slather myself with Picaridin when I go.
Secondly, I can’t tell you how glad I am that these videos exist. Planning a trip to Scotland from the US with my little family next June and hoping to save money by mostly backpacking and wild camping the Scottish highlands. Planning international travel for the first time since 2010 (Morocco) felt daunting. I’m very used to planning itineraries for backpacking long trails like the Appalachian Trail here, but it’s not that easy to plan this one, or so I thought. These videos are helping! Question: how often did you come across a water source?
Leave it to my fellow backpacking RUclipsrs to give me all the best info!
I will definitely pick up that “map for walkers!”:-) I love your video style and truly appreciate the information within. Thank you so much!
Ah f**k those midges mate! 🤣😂🤣😂.
I love my trousers and gaiters too much to wear shorts and trails on that terrain! Lol
Great part 1 mate. Looking forward to the next.
Haha ahh they weren’t too bad outside the tent. They get worse in the upcoming episodes. 😭😭😭 haha thanks mate. Part 2 coming soon
@@thetrailhunter4469 ❤️👍👍
Great trail really enjoyed following your adventure, so I spied another atompacks different to your first, which model size etc is this... I'm about to pull the trigger but just can't decide on which one.
Cheers Al
SMIDGE is a must for midges season. Good news is there numbers have been dropping over last 10 years, bad news is they are a good food source for many of our wildlife
love your videos mate, really well produced but as a Scotsman I have only one complaint, your pronunciation of Bothy is making my teeth itch :) I will help you though ! its "baw - fay" kind of like toffy
Nice video and cool scenery. I see the pack you're using looks like an Atom+ made with Robic Extreema, not XPAC like the one you had made in the "See how an Atom+ is made" video. Is there a reason for the switch and do you like one material over the other?
Alright mate. Just wondering why you chose the Solplex and not the StratoSpire for this trip?
Quality video dude, definitely got to do this trail myself!!
What's the Solplex? How does it relate to the Plexamid?
Now this is how to explore the Isle of Skye!! Incredible video, incredible adventure and incredible trail!
Thanks so much Josh!
Is it a tick infested island? I hiked the west cost of Jura two years back and I’ve never known so many ticks! Still would highly recommend that island though.
Thanks Simon. D’ya know what. I’ve never ever had a tick. I thought maybe Skye would be the one but still, nothing. Unless there’s one I still haven’t found lurking somewhere haha. All the best.
@@thetrailhunter4469 all I can say is, you’re extremely lucky! Considering the amount of time you spend out and about!
Dont make it too popular :D - i have hiked it 5 times now... and sure, more people now... but still not that often you meet "thruhikers" - if you get back, consider doing the Bla Bhenin variation - more interesting than the southern route i think
Ahh haha cheers mate, will try not too although it probably wouldn’t be everyone’s cuppa due to the lack of trail and the insane amount of bogz. Sure yeah, I did the Bad Step alternate which will be in part 3 I think.
Amazing music and editing! How many days did it take you to hike from Hunish?
Nice one buddy. well put together, absolutely stunning views as well! What drone do you use? I’ve been thinking of getting one! Anyway glad to see you back on the trail and cheers for the video 👍🏻ATB George
Thanks so much, George. Glad you enjoyed that. Sure, it’s a DJI Mavic Air 2. It’s bigger and heavier than the Air 1, but quality, range and battery life are insane. The Air 1 though is tiny for what you’re getting and the Mavic Mini is very powerful for its size. Thanks for watching mate and all the best to you too.
@@thetrailhunter4469 cheers bud much appreciated. When I see a drone being used it helps me appreciate so much more of the scenery and gives you more of a sense of actually being there. Anyway cheers again and look forward to seeing the next video 👍🏻
No doubt your videos are some of the best filmed very high quality compared to other channels. Look forward to watching the rest of this, would love to do this one.
Ahh thanks very much, True North! Really means a lot. Hope you enjoy the rest of the series. The Sligachan and bad step episodes are my faves.
What a beautiful trail! I love that openness of a grassland like environment. Pretty much the natural environment of other countries is what makes me want to visit them! Heck I don’t want to visit other states in the US unless I’m hiking/biking them 😂 great video!
Thanks, Shawn. Ahh man yeah you’d really like this trail. It reminded me of the PCT on so many parts that day. Hope you can come out and hike it some time. Where abouts in the states are you?
"that's not right is it?" haha midge rainfall! epic shots of the Quiraing.
Thanks Rigby. Glad you enjoyed that. Stay tuned for part 2!
Love your videos man! This is amazing! Planning to go in may :D What is the first song called if i may ask?
Nice one! Ahh I can’t remember. It was from a licensed library called Artlist.io Hha. Thanks for watching and good luck in May. Let me know if you have any questions 👍👍👍
Will you be doing a video about the gear and clothing you used
Yeh boy! Well worth waiting for that! Loved watching mate and following along brought back loads of memory’s dude. Looking forward to part 2
Weeeeeyyy! Thanks mate. Means a lot coming from another Skye veteran. Glad you enjoyed that mate. Hope all’s good your end. Always thankful for our phone call before to discuss the route. 👍👍👍
@@thetrailhunter4469 skye veteran 🤪 yes enjoyed our phone call before you set out on this trail was good chatting about it.
Not too good my end to be fair mate. I’ve come of social media ect too. Life’s a massive mess at the min dude.
The production value on this is 👌
how you handle with the midges....
Wow, I'm the 5,000 viewer (for real). BTW, your editing is sick
Thanks so much Kawan!!! Really glad you enjoyed it.
Good start to this series Russ! I was looking forward to it partly because I was curious to see how it would look in someone else's eyes and also because it's nice to relive the trail. Nice one! Cam
Thanks so much, Cam. Glad you liked it and it’s so good to hear your thoughts as you’ve done the trail yourself. Would you go back and do it all again?
@@thetrailhunter4469 I realised I never replied! I would redo parts of it probably but adding some nearby summits just to spice it up a bit. The section from Loch Sligachan to Portree was such a let down for me so would want to use time in more exciting terrain!
Started the trail with you to this morning Russ. Looking great and ready for next instalment. Those midges!! Thanks for taking us along - Ben ⛺️
Scotland does it again! Absolutely superb stuff yet again mate and swinging my thoughts to do more trail walking even more. I'm looking forward to the remainder now.
Keep up the great work,
Bryan
Wow, I've been waiting for this! Yeah, I know how it feels like. When you HAVE to get out of the tent and there's no way to do that without a hundred bites and inviting them inside.
Haha yes! Was mental. Used my cook pot as a pee pot a couple of times. Adds to the flavour 🙊
@@thetrailhunter4469 🤣
really enjoyed the video, another trail added to the list. Are you doing a kit run down video? Because i really want that buff haha
Haha thanks John. Yes I will be some time soon. You can go to my website for a look at all my gear. thetrailhunter.com/category/gear 🤙🤙🤙
@@thetrailhunter4469 that buff will be mine! Looking forward to part 2
What an epic place I've had a few people say this is their fave place in the UK I'm going to have to go check it out
Amazing stuff buddy, looking forward to the next!
Thanks Jonny! Glad you enjoyed that.
These views are EPIC! The ridge lines are unreal especially the footage in 13-14min 🙌🏼. What music tracks do you use? The bit with the midge flies was insane - so many of them. Nice job on the video buddy! Really enjoyed it
Loved Skye! I went on a solo trip, camped for 2 days in Skye. Did 3 day hikes (Old Man Storr, Quiraing and the Fairy Pools) and I was so in love with the it and its majestic views. Wish to go back and maybe hike the Skye trail.
Great video, thank you. What time of the year was this?
Thanks Andy. This was filmed in July this year. I had a very small window of good weather and one day was terrible. 🤙
Hi Mate, what time of year did you hike this? We are interested as this for August 😬 fingers crossed and just wanted to assess the midge level!?
Hi mate. Yeah this was mid-August. Midges aren’t as bad as wind and rain in my opinion, but they took the biscuit haha. Worth the rewards though. Was amazing.
@@thetrailhunter4469 hi mate I've had to change plans as holiday doesn't align and looking at October, I guess not midge issue but I'm thinking camping on the ridge maybe a bit exposed... Either way in enjoying the planning for a long (ish) hike again... Finally 😎
Hi Russ, can i ask what software are you using to do your outline maps and the progress maps? they are really good.
Hi mate. Sure I use after effects for those. Create a path and in the layer panel, click add > Trim Paths > Set keyframes for start and finish > use the speed graph to adjust the easing. Hope that helps. 👍👍👍
@@thetrailhunter4469 erm .....yeah ha ha you lost me at trim paths
Absolutely brilliant vlog mate. The drone shots are stunning. You're right with what you said at the start of the Vlog, I'm surprised it's not as popular as some of the others in Scotland!
Wow what a beautiful place and your cinematography was amazing. Thank you for taking us along with you I can't wait to watch part 2.
did you drive to the northern start point or to the end point and get a bus to the start? cant seem to find any info on best ways to go about it.
I left the car in Broadford and then got the bus to Portree and then a second bus to Duntulm. It was quite late in the day so wild camped just south of the lookout bothy.
@@thetrailhunter4469 oh right cheers mate, got 3 weeks off work planning on doing this and some other stuff in september.
Nice to see you with a hiking vlog again :-) You should come to our island I think you would like it! And we dont have midges like that, but we do have 1000s of ticks in the goat areas!
Thanks Outdoor Ting. Which island are you on?
Oh my life that music is giving me all the feels!!! Wonderful video as always!
LMAO, thought there was a piece of lint on your lens in the lower left corner for a while.... trail looks fantastic!
Really enjoyed that! Great video Rus.
Another epic and inspiring video mate well done. Love the channel.
What do you eat?? I'd be starving!
Ahh haha I packed out salami, cheese, tortillas, skittles, nuts, ramen, Lucho Delitos and cuppa soups!
@@thetrailhunter4469 ok that sounds better! I was wondering if you had survived a whole day on cuppa soup 😂
I’m doing this trail in late May. My biggest concern right now is food and water! Any suggestions?
Thanks for watching. Carry a Sawyer Squeeze water filter. Resupply food in Portree if going southbound.
Thanks mate! I got a bit worried when you said it was the toughest bit of trail you’d ever done
@@MrJimmywalton ahh haha yeah no worries. It was especially when the wind and rain kicked in on the ridge. The trail can be completed in 3 to 6 days depending on how you hike so running out of food shouldn’t be a problem. Plenty of water sources on route. 👍
I’ll be taking the leisurely six day option..
Nice one TH. I walked the ridge from Flodigarry to The Old Man on my day 2. It was the hardest day's hiking I've ever done, but totally awesome. Maybe you'd liked to see it on my channel... Cheers, Justin 👍
Hey Justin. Thanks so much for all the awesome comments! That trail is the perfect way to get to know the island isn’t it!
Ahh cool, I’ll check out and subscribe to your channel!
Ahhh, Justin. I’ve watched a couple of your videos already and already subscribed a while back. Nice one!
Nice one Russell. Skye is wonderful, eh? It's hard to explain, but it doesn't feel like the UK, it's magical. I still feel emotional about the Skye Trail. Man. What a landscape.....
@@JustinWhiting9 ahhh man. Just outstanding. One of the most breathtaking trails. I just wanted to keep going. Have you got an Instagram, Justin?
How long did it take you to get to the start of the trail from home?
Ooo, It took me 10 hours of driving to Skye. Then I camped the night, then half a day getting the bus from broadford. 🤙
@@thetrailhunter4469 Jesus
Taken me a while to watch this but it's awesome the scenery is epic
Really enjoyed this Russ, great work. I particularly enjoyed you showing the route, that's a really nice touch. Looking forward to Part 2..
Thanks David. I really like making the map animations and doing a run down of the day on the paper maps too. 👍
Did you treat the tent with permethrin before the trip?
Will definitely do that next time. Is it very effective?
Yes its effective; spray everything including clothes
Great video as always! Those drone landscape clips are amazing!!!!! Love to do the Skye trail someday.
Thanks so much guys. Glad you enjoyed it. I’ll look forward to seeing your stories when you do, loved watching along on the W/EHW 🤙🤙🤙
awww Great video Brother!! Wow I want to do this....those midges what the...!! :p
Thanks Stuart! Definitely head up there and yeah they get worse the further I go. 🤙🤙🤙
Another great video dude, where can I check out your gear list for this hike? (Sorry if I've missed it) Looking forward to part 2
Thanks Rowland and also thanks for your Thrunotes order! I’ll be adding it to my website soon. It’s all on there, but not categorised into the hike thetrailhunter.com/category/gear
Great video from my beloved Scotland. When I visited Skye it was crazy foggy, but still beautiful. Looking forward to watching next episodes!
Thanks very much, Adam. Glad you enjoyed that. Yes I was very lucky with the weather, until the next day haha. Happy trails.
That was great! Loved everything about that movie, sound, views, planning and especially the tiny real-time map graphic at the bottom left of the screen. Brilliant...
Thanks Wood Chip!
Great videos! Looking to do the trail later this year... One question I wanted to ask, where did you park??
I parked the car in Broadford but the person did me a massive favour and let me park on their drive. I can’t say who it was of course or we’ll all be parking there haha. But there are spots down the main road and lay-bys all the way down the A87 where you could leave the motor for a week.
Also, thanks!
@@thetrailhunter4469 That's great! Thanks for the reply. I've been researching a ton but can't seem to find anything! We'll just wing it :)
Any time! Well, a short walk from Portree is this lay-by goo.gl/maps/UssoFhvnp6vPaY3Q8
You could park there, walk to Portree to get the bus and then get the bus to drop you off at the car from Broadford when you’re done. 👍
@@thetrailhunter4469 Great suggestion, thanks for that. I've seen a couple of free car parks in Broadford so may go with one of those 👍
hi i hope you don't mind me asking but what drone do you use ?
Not at all John! It’s a Dji Mavic Air 2. Very good battery life and long range. 🤙🤙🤙
The Trail Hunter thank you for getting back to me , stay safe and hope you get back on the PCT soon
@@johnmac8065 Thanks John. Means a lot and any time. Looking like 2022 for a completely covid-free thruhike.
Inspired me to do this next year thank-you so much

Thanks Desmond. Yeah that section really lifted me into it. The whole trail is spectacular.
Amazing scenery great video no virus up there i bet some of the colours in the sky were sublime 🏕🌌🌠🌅
