The dialogue in his movies is always so distinctly his own. Like it's all exposition and with no sense of urgency. Kudos to him for being able to get actors to all deliver lines the same way. He's got a vision for sure.
The one thing I really like about his films is just how uniquely weird the dialogue always is. It's not realistic, at all. People don't talk like this. It's eerie and off-putting. If his ideas and plots were better, it would be really effective, I think. But since so many of his ideas are kinda flimsy and badly developed, it all just comes across as "and he can't write dialogue, either."
@@austerity101 Unfortunately, majority of the time, he _is_ bad with dialogue. And I don't mean the stilted, awkwardness, that's fine. I often talk like his characters and that's because I'm autistic, so things like the way the boy was talking won't really bother me. The thing is, he's really good at having things in the background that foreshadow the upcoming events. Like in this movie, before they reach the beach there's a poster easily missed, about 'the time of your life' or something, several other things like that. I like things like that in movies, but the problem with M. Night Shyamalan is that he always TELLS instead of showing. Every character has to say who they are and what's happening at all moments. That's bad dialogue. It means that the second you see any kind of object on screen, any poster, you immediately know what Shyamalan is going to do with it because he just can't help himself lol. You see the poster, you're intrigued and make some guesses, maybe they'll go back in time? But then all the characters start monologuing about 'needing to appreciate the time left', and you immediately know the main characters are going to have their 'time' cut short. That's bad dialogue, because it's unnecessary dialogue. When all the hotel staff are wearing hospital scrubs, you can guess it's some kind of science experiment from the beginning, but then you have a ten minute monologue at the end where the researchers are going into detail about all their research and how great it is and how sad it is people have to die, but that sacrifices have to be made. That's bad dialogue, because it's unnecessary. It stinks. If he could reign himself in a little bit, I agree, he could be so good. He could have the mix of symbolism, with SHOWING, and all the eeriness of the stilted dialogue. Sometimes silences can speak louder than words, and sometimes the audience isn't as stupid as Shyamalan thinks lol.

Another HUGE plothole is the medical study (which is supposed to be the entire premise of the movie.) The doses they had at the hotel would've already metabolized & left their systems long before the 1st 30 minutes on the island.
not to mention the conditions are still that they’re rapidly aging. so they’ve only been shown to work under that specific condition, whether or not it implies that in a sense decades had passed for them in particular. for it to be that time did in fact pass, the island would have to operate on an alternate timeline where that cop wouldn’t be there anymore and all the workers would also be old or replaced once the experiment was complete.
Three things: 1. Thank you for condensing this movie to 30 minutes 2. Thank you for making it actually enjoyable 3. I luv your bangs. 4. Mid size Sedan is probably the best name ever in film and should have garnered an Oscar ( ok sorry - four )
I usually like M. Night Shyamalan movies, but you're right, this one was pretty bad. So many plot holes! Patricia dying at the end plagued me. I thought, maybe I misunderstood something because they say she was cured, yet she died...from a seizure! Made no sense. And the whole pregnancy plot should've just been left out, that was disturbing.
The medicine held off the seizures. I think they said it was 16 years? I cant remember the exact number. But the medicine was no longer in her system so it caught up to her and she died.
@@paytonrobles3113 very few seizures are actually lethal though. Most people don’t even need to go to the hospital after them unless it’s their first seizure or they hit their head.

Hang in there, friend. Two years post diagnosis here and while it hasn't been easy, it does get better. Be kind and patient with yourself as you navigate life with a new body. Give yourself lots of grace as you're trying to figure out a new normal. Take care!❤
Hi! From someone with several autoimmune diseases I have to suggest that you be the advocate for your own health! If you don't like a Dr, get a new one. There are so many treatment options now. There is no reason for you to just have to go with what your insurance says you have to start with. I sincerely hope you find a treatment option that works for you but don't be surprised if it takes going through a few to find it. The stages of grief may be something you go through... for your old self and body. Allow yourself to go through that. You need it. Depression and anxiety accompany theses diseases. Get treatment. Don't live one day without giving your body what it needs and deserves!

The only thing about this movie that genuinely bothers me is that the doctor guy is obviously showing signs of Alzheimer’s or general dementia but at the end they say it's schizophrenia, of course the only way a mentally ill person can be violent in a movie is if they have schizophrenia 🙄 /s Edit: even if it was confirmed he had dementia or something like that I would still be salty about the most villain character on the island being the only mentally ill person, come one Shyamalan
@@colorsMEwonderful it was DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder) in Split, it’s another trope to make people with that in films be violent and “crazy” so Shyamalan doesn’t have the best track record with dealing with mental illness I’d say
Exactly. Yes Alzheimers and dementia can cause times of uncontrolled emotions but it doesn't make people dangerous. Schizophrenia doesn't either. If left untreated then it can get worse but people with Schizophrenia aren't evil or malicious. That's a huge problem in media when others portray them that way because it makes the public believe that they should be afraid of people living with mental illness

This film pissed me off in many ways, but the thing that pissed me off the most was how the film treated the epileptic character. She has a tonic-clonic seizure at breakfast, but after resting for a bit, she's up, walking, communicating, completely lucid, like the seizure never happened. TCs knock you the fuck out - it's a good couple of *days* before you've recovered to the level the epileptic character did. (Yes, I myself am epileptic and starved for good representation in film and TV and/or a genuine understanding of the condition IRL. Why do you ask)
One gotta love Shyamalan. He comes up with the most bizarre ideas and somehow he manages to convince a producer, a bunch of actors, and a filming crew to make them.
This movie could have been SO good. It had all the right parts, a good setup- mystery and intrigue but then they threw the plot to the trash and hit heavy on the shock factors with not much relevance. It could have been so sick
I could totally see how this concept could be a really fascinating story. There are just so many details that were not thought through, and the script was terrible. I used to like Shamalan’s stuff in the past, but this is ridiculous 🤦🏼♀️ I think Tammy would have made this movie better. She would have brought some comedic relief.
The cave scene, despite the movie it comes from, will forever be a bit terrifying. Imagine looking like crunchy spaghetti because of your shitty, instant-healing bones
I saw this at the theatre and didn’t hate it, but this roast was hilarious. 😂. All your points are valid, but I still found it watchable…once. I felt like some of the sillier elements like “Midsize Sedan” were intentional and the movie was making fun of itself a bit.
I watched this movie with my mom. Granted, it wasn’t that great, but I took a complete different approach to it. I follow a lot of true crime stories and this entire movie reminded of cases where they tried out different drugs on unsuspecting people to find what it would do. I feel like at some point in the 2000's M. Night Shyamalan forgot how to write characters and plot points that actually feel human and real and not written by a 15-year-old horror fantasy writer. Or maybe he just decided to start fcking around and seeing how long his movies would still do good in the box office. It's incredible how he has done 2 of my favourite movies and I absolutely hate all of the rest.
I watched this stoned and was pissing myself sobbing laughing the whole time. It's actually so good if you tell yourself it's intentionally a comedy. Or don't just laugh it's so funny. My absolute favourite moments were all the infuriating times (read: every second line of dialogue) when the characters would just narrate things that are happening off screen bc Shalaman is too lazy to actually use practical or special effects most of the time. Literally just exclaiming shit like "it's the size of a golf ball! It's the size of a SOFTBALL! It's the size of a CANTELOPE!!" or "you have wrinkles" "yep, the kids are definitely older" (that bitch was four when she came in and now she's in puberty??????) but the absolute PEAK for me was the part where Jarin gets so frustrated and screams "I'm JARIN!", had me pausing the movie to catch my breath from laughing. Also honourable mention to "he died from lack of attention" 😭😭😭
In case anyone didn't know: This is based on a graphic novel. It's meant to be more thought invoking than actually follow logic (hence all the plot holes and questions). A lot of the weird stuff and dialog is straight from the source material. So... I mean Shmamamalan is weird and all but not all of the weird is from him directly.
He explains everything in his movies, like the audience is full of soft skulls. The dialogues are horrendous. The characters change clothes. The kids look older in "middle age" than their parents did when they died of old age. There are so many things I could list which are 100% M Night's fault. The fact is, he makes terrible movies. He got lucky with Sixth Sense, but the rest have all sucked

1. Thank you for condensing this movie to 30 minutes
2. Thank you for making it actually enjoyable
3. I luv your bangs.
4. Mid size Sedan is probably the best name ever in film and should have garnered an Oscar

I absolutely lost it at “Midsize Sedan”. 🤣 That is the most hilarious Shyamalan detail since the reveal of the porcupine monster in The Village.

I read the comic after I watched a few videos on this and that graphic novel was creepy as shit like they focused on sexualizing the teenage girl so much it was weird as hell.

I swear all of his movies have SOOO much potential. The concepts are great. He has the clout, the $$, etc and still we get... OLD. sigh
The film itself even looks cheap. Like it was filmed by a team of cinema students for a end of semester project. It's baffling lol
that's my general problem with M. Night. He has some really cool ideas, but he executes them in worst ways. The acting is atrocious, the jokes aren't funny, it's usually the dumb delivery that is funny, not the actual joke, the mix between horror and comedy is uneven and ruins the vibe on spot. I have no idea if it's all intentional or he deadass has no idea how to make a proper movie.
Agreed. The man has great ideas but the execution is way off much of the time.

RIGHT like there are so many things this movie missed that actually couldve been interesting concepts. also why not write in like an 18 yr old girl who is pregnant but hadn't told her parents yet, and then when they all get to the beach she has the baby in like the first minute. great way to start things and not as icky as making a 6 yr old get preggos

The only thing about this movie that genuinely bothers me is that the doctor guy is obviously showing signs of Alzheimer’s or general dementia but at the end they say it's schizophrenia, of course the only way a mentally ill person can be violent in a movie is if they have schizophrenia 🙄 /s
Edit: even if it was confirmed he had dementia or something like that I would still be salty about the most villain character on the island being the only mentally ill person, come one Shyamalan
Yeah. Didn’t he also make split? Where the violent main character was also schizophrenic??
@@colorsMEwonderful it was DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder) in Split, it’s another trope to make people with that in films be violent and “crazy” so Shyamalan doesn’t have the best track record with dealing with mental illness I’d say
@@thedreammweaver6274 True!
Exactly. Yes Alzheimers and dementia can cause times of uncontrolled emotions but it doesn't make people dangerous. Schizophrenia doesn't either. If left untreated then it can get worse but people with Schizophrenia aren't evil or malicious.
This one is not his original idea, though. It's an adaptation of a french graphic novel. Shyamalan just made it worse.
Well… they still got paid and none of them were major high profile actors…
This movie could have been SO good. It had all the right parts, a good setup- mystery and intrigue but then they threw the plot to the trash and hit heavy on the shock factors with not much relevance. It could have been so sick

I feel like at some point in the 2000's M. Night Shyamalan forgot how to write characters and plot points that actually feel human and real and not written by a 15-year-old horror fantasy writer. Or maybe he just decided to start fcking around and seeing how long his movies would still do good in the box office.

Shmamamalan. Take my upvote.
In case you didn’t know, Jaime mentions this in the video
@jamie she mentions it’s based on a novel but that’s it.
