When it first came out I went to see this in theater and there was a fly walking across the projector the whole time and it took us way too long to tell if it was part of the movie or not.
When I watched this movie I was so confused, but as soon as the guy said “Cheese and crackers!” I was convinced this movie was actually a M. Night Shyamalan version of a comedy. And it makes sense because all of the actors have been in some really funny comedies. It even funnier that it’s so serious lol. I can’t be convinced otherwise.

Not in the US. There are other pollinator insects that can take over the bees niche. The honeybee is actually invasive and was brought over from Europe. There are over 4,000 species of native bees and many many species are not affected by the bee die off. But friendly reminder: don't use pesticides & while you're at it, don't use fertilizer. Fertilizer because it harms amphibians who breathe through their skin.

A neuro-toxin could, I guess, effect each person differently. Since each person is different in how their nervous system is wired. But I like how the plants seem to be actively attacking humans. I mean…the concept is fun.
I read somewhere that Wahlberg said he would ask for directions about certain scenes and his character, but M. Night would say to just act serious and nothing else lol, I think that explaines a lot
My dad showed me this movie when I was about 8 years old (I used to watch horror movies all the time from a young age-) and honestly I still love this movie. It's shitty, sure, and weird, but it has so much nostalgic value for me lmao
I absolutely 100% remember seeing a clip during filming where Wahlberg is questioning Shyamalan about why they are going in houses if the food is likely tainted (or something like that) and Shyamalan snaps about “canned food” or something but it was ages ago and I can’t find it anywhere 😭 Something tells me Marky Mark knows stuff was sounding a little stooopid
This is genuinely one of my favorite scary movies of all time. Because the concept is very new and has never been done before, and there are bits and pieces of truths in it via how plants communicates and how plants are sentient.
You did NOT just say ''died laughing'' when thousands and millions people die for real... Overusing this expression in times of pandemics is CRINGE AF, almost as the Happening
@@Amused_Comfort_Inc how is "large swaths of bees are dead" not a metaphor for the plants killing off large swaths of humans. As in, by misrepresenting colong collapse disorder as "mysterious" it hints at nature producing a mass death event that will be used on humans. Not saying it was done well or incorporated properly but it's there.
I actually remember reading an interview with Shyamalan back when this movie came out. He said he wanted to make a bad B-Horror movie, like the ones from the 50s. So, he wasn't necessarily trolling, but this movie is exactly what he wanted it to be. I feel like, because he had already made Signs and Sixth Sense and The Village, etc, people thought he was taking himself really seriously with this movie, but he wasn't.
Makes sense. But didn't he direct it himself? I figured it was meant to be more melancholy and super dark. Either way the art direction and post prod totally screwed it up.
He was lieing he did this movie to precondition society with what's to come. .. the "plandemic" and "social distancing"... I.e. gov't tyranny and total control i.e. social conditioning society for what's to come
Ok, but when Mrs Jones was all ‘you’re gonna murder me in my sleep’ abs Mark was like ‘what? No,’ it reminded me of some of the reactions I’ve had with my confused, older patients. They’ll be like ‘you’re gonna stab me with a fork!’ And I’m like ‘what? No…’
same oml. like ik they teach us not to engage with someone in the throes of dementia, but i try to dignify with SOME response. idc if they forget right after; our job is to make them comfortable and safe, and i don't want anyone left to steep in frankly terrifying delusion & no reassurance for ANY amount of time
Tbh, this movie really freaked me out as a kid😆 It used to pour rain where I lived, & you could literally watch the grass stand back up once the rain stopped. Some would pop up faster than others, & some would have a slow ascend. It was weird to witness, so when this movie came out, I was in total belief plants could say f*ck you guys, & release a chemical to f*ck with us. Now that I'm older, I feel like this could've been executed 100x better.
Saw this in theaters and remember at the time people didn't even realize how bad this was until later on. At this point in Shamalon's career people were still very optimistic about his talent bc he hadn't reached full on whacko yet, but was getting there. We all for whatever reason gave him the benefit of the doubt and took this for what it was, even if the ending "reveal" was utterly ridiculous.
I saw this movie in theaters with my husband and some of our friends when it first came out. We were all talking about it after we left the theater, saying how ridiculous it was and how nothing made sense. One of our friends said he didn’t get what it was supposed to be about, my husband and I tried to explain, but then our other friend said the stupidest thing: “it’s about friendship. Their friendship fixed the happening.” And he was totally serious.
there is a really cool pod cast called “how did this get made” thad dissects bad movies. My husband and I watch bad movies based on this podcast on a regular basis. I have seen some doozies!
The mood ring is a nod towards the plants are effected by the mood of those around them. I feel like M.Night ws trying to make an English Teachers cream in their pants movie. All this symbolism that is an absolute reach.
Even if you select the air recirculating switch, some amount of air from the outside will get into the car. It's useful if you're passing by a pig farm and you don't want the smell. But it's not a biohazard protection system 😂😂
This was always my theory too. Like some people just got real ding-y and weird and others started self harming/dying. I felt like it was a precursor to the actual "happening"
PS, the heavyset woman in the blue shirt in the group scene (when they’re on the phone with the girl who sees in calculus) was Christina Crawford as a little girl in another absolute classic “Mommie Dearest”. Which would be AMAZING for you to do Jaime!!!
that hot dog man is literally me. i made a 4 paragraph post on facebook like a month ago about how hot dogs are underrated and get a bad reputation but they are one of the most consistent foods.
In college, I did a series of experiments with 2 botanist involving plants. There have been lots of these experiments through the years, and the findings are usually the same. We gave our plants the same amount of food, water, and light. However, for half of them we played nice music, we talked to them, and said nice things, and for the other half, we yelled at them, and said mean things to them. The ones we treated like crap, died, and the ones with all the positive reinforcement thrived. So the premise of this movie was good, but the execution wasn’t great. It wasn’t the worst movie in the world! The thought of a species rising up against us, because we treat it like crap, is not only terrifying, but not completely improbable. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@@shanac5536 We don't even ignore them, we murder them to make paper. But all the other trees are just chill with that I guess? I often wonder if some of these "we talked nice to the plants" experiments don't account for differences in sunlight, since if you're yelling at one plant it can't be placed close enough to the other plant for the "loved" plant to hear the yelling, right? Not saying I don't believe it, but I'd like to see it replicated with trees and other types of flora. Maybe only some react? Maybe non-trees react because they have a shorter lifespan? idk.
u think that maybe unconsciously u were just genuinely taking better care of the ones you were being nice to, and it was u receiving the positive reinforcement?
@@astroboystanI assume that a college professor can manage to make sure the plants are physically treated equally (same amount of water, plant food, pH, whatever…) and such. If it was a homemade experiment, that seems fair enough to ask, but I assume that a professor educated to teach full grown adults these subjects can manage to set a schedule and get measuring cups.

The Happening was like a turning point for Shamalan's career I think. Before that point he was mostly well regarded, and while Lady in the Water wasn't great, it was at least more low key about its badness, and it was more the weird that stood out in that movie which acts as a bit of a smoke screen. People who still wanted to think he was a good director could dismiss it as just being too weird for them, rather than bad. With The Happening it was all bad, and in your face with it, no excuses. The premise, the presentation, the acting, everything was bad. And then from that point Shamalan wasn't seen as a "good but a bit strange" filmmaker anymore. Even his older stuff was viewed with more criticism after that point. And then not long after, The Last Airbender permanently solidified his status as a Bad Director to most people.

I just found this channel today because I was watching the latest upload from one of my favorite RUclipsrs, Nick DiRamio, and someone recommended a possible collab between him, and Jamie in the comments. So, I decided to check her out, and boy am I glad that I did. She is great, been binging her stuff for hours now, love how she edits herself into the movies. I hit that subscribe button less than five minutes into the first one. Great stuff.

I’m going through a very hard time right now. Severe depression. Your videos have gotten me through it when I feel most low. This is one of my favorites and I watch it a lot. It always makes me laugh. Thank you for your content.
When it first came out I went to see this in theater and there was a fly walking across the projector the whole time and it took us way too long to tell if it was part of the movie or not.
This comment and the picture in my head of what you experienced made me laugh out loud! 😂😂😂
🤣🤣🤣
When I watched this movie I was so confused, but as soon as the guy said “Cheese and crackers!” I was convinced this movie was actually a M. Night Shyamalan version of a comedy. And it makes sense because all of the actors have been in some really funny comedies. It even funnier that it’s so serious lol. I can’t be convinced otherwise.
I always thought it was a comedy? Lol
That actually makes sense.
Apparently it was supposed to be a parody and none of us got it.

I liked honey kinda 😂😂
I was 18 when it came out and loved it! But I would love to look at it now with my 35 yr old soul and Jamie's review; I'm sure I'll be in stitches!
The plants were killing the humans because the humans were responsible for the bees dying and plants need bees for pollination.
Oh my gosh that makes so much sense.
Lol but there's places where humans do it like in China.

There's this channel on here run by a biologist who breaks down different movie sicknesses and things like that and he actually did a pretty in depth explanation of what may be Happening. It's a pretty interesting video!
The channel's called Roanoke Gaming and he also thought it was a really stupid movie XD
I actually really like the concept of this movie. It’s really a shame that the execution was done so poorly.
I agree.

A neuro-toxin could, I guess, effect each person differently. Since each person is different in how their nervous system is wired. But I like how the plants seem to be actively attacking humans. I mean…the concept is fun.

This movie was SOOOO frustrating. Like did he tell everyone “hey act like you don’t know how to act” and go
That's the only explanation because John Leguizamo is amazing in every movie (but this one).
I read somewhere that Wahlberg said he would ask for directions about certain scenes and his character, but M. Night would say to just act serious and nothing else lol, I think that explaines a lot

The bee thing is called Colony Collapse Disorder. It's a really interesting, but depressing topic. No one really knows.
Lots of people know. 🙄 the point was that it wasn't brought up again in the movie. Any tying it to the plot is a reach and a half.
I genuinely loved this movie as a child and still do because I rewatch it through the filter of childhood
Nostalgia goggles are strong 😂
I actually remember reading an interview with Shyamalan back when this movie came out. He said he wanted to make a bad B-Horror movie, like the ones from the 50s. So, he wasn't necessarily trolling, but this movie is exactly what he wanted it to be. I feel like, because he had already made Signs and Sixth Sense and The Village, etc, people thought he was taking himself really seriously with this movie, but he wasn't.
Makes sense. But didn't he direct it himself? I figured it was meant to be more melancholy and super dark. Either way the art direction and post prod totally screwed it up.
Nothing about this movie was 50s B movie horror
He was lieing he did this movie to precondition society with what's to come. .. the "plandemic" and "social distancing"... I.e. gov't tyranny and total control i.e. social conditioning society for what's to come

Love a marky mark in a vesty vest though
The whole thing with them thinking they were safe inside the vehicle is kinda dumb bc a vehicle's ventilation system draws air from.....outside.....

Not if you close the vents
Even if you select the air recirculating switch, some amount of air from the outside will get into the car. It's useful if you're passing by a pig farm and you don't want the smell. But it's not a biohazard protection system 😂😂

my theory is that everyone in this movie is so stupid and acts stupidly because the happening is already having a mild effect on them.
Every conversation is the least relatable dialogue I've ever heard. And sometimes they are just absurd.
hey that's smart!
Or the plants are killing the stupid people. 😉
Definitely a sound theory
This was always my theory too. Like some people just got real ding-y and weird and others started self harming/dying. I felt like it was a precursor to the actual "happening"

I appreciate and love how you edit yourself into the scenes and highly IMPROVE UPON THEM!!! LOL😆😆 Love you, love this series!!! 💖💖
But we ignore trees and they are doing good so I guess it's ok
WHAT?? NOOOOOO
