I think the trash discussions happen with noticeable dialects for any language. People want shallow entertainment of "wow they speak funny" more often than a linguistic deep-dive into how a region speaks. Back when I was kid I'd get asked to say "walking and talking" because that somehow highlighted my accent, and they'd literally just laugh and walk away, no longer interested. That's with immature children, but even adults fixate on specific phrases and joke about it.
Even youtubers and tv show producers that are trying to educate will fall back on simple phrase demonstrations because that's the surface-level understanding of a dialect, and they're not familiar with any of the deeper points.
So thank you, for actually teaching and discussing it instead.

It's a complicated topic. I am absolutely STOKED about the positive attention academics have been giving to AAE (African American English) lately. I hope we can do a lot to preserve other varieties of languages all over the world. I'd prefer a world where we all are highly informed about all the different ways people speak to one where we standardize everything, but I'm not sure if it's a fight I'll win.

Thanks so much for the support. Real life gets in the way sometimes, but I'm always itching to do this. Glad you think it's thought-provoking, sometimes I'm worried I'm over analyzing this all a bit.

@@KoreanPatch you are over analysing but I am very fine with that as I like doing it myself 😂

Super interesting! I've been a little irked by the online 사투리 content situation recently, myself.
I wanted to understand "standard" Korean first, then dive into different 사투리, but I found little to no good resources for it.
I appreciate all the effort you are putting into this. I like the way you take the time to go into details.
It may seem boring first time through, but having the content at all to constantly come back to and learn from is essential for long term growth. Can't wait for the next video!

Great video! I didn’t know about the history behind it with the 중세 한국어, tones and pitch accent. I also didn’t know the difference between the 나 and 노 question endings. Can’t wait for the next video - I’m always here for the deep-dives!

Love your channel. So interesting in many respects especially this video as someone born in Pusan, emigrated to the states in elementary school and learned Japanese in college. Sorry your channel did not take off. Probably too esoteric for your casual RUclips viewer.

Probably. I'll be back some day, just ran out of runway and had to go back to the day job. Thanks so much for the kind words, my friend, I appreciate you taking the time to stop by and watch the content 😊

Thanks for calling 제주말 a language instead of a dialect. The political nature of this classification often times goes over people's heads.

Thanks for caring about the diversity of Korean languages! This, specifically 경상도 사투리 which has the biggest influence on my personal version of Korean, is a main focus of this channel. If only I had the financial freedom to dedicate more time to talking about it 😔

You are right. Mandarin is just the result of Mongols and Manchurian accent of speaking "Chinese". It has a relative short history of a few hundreds of years, while other southern Chinese dialects like Cantonese has much longer history and speaks much similar to the Ancient Chinese. It is unfortunate that a dialect speaks by the "invaders" dominant and represents Chinese nowadays

Their audience likes shallow content so that’s what they deliver.

    • @KoreanPatch
      @KoreanPatch  Год назад +2

That's partially the reason, but I think that's too simplistic. This kind of content being "good enough" for the average audience is true, but what I'm exploring with this rant is WHY this is considered "good enough" by certain demographics. I'd like to tear that concept to shreds.

In a way, Busan saturi is to Korean what a Boston accent is to standard English. Or cockney English to standard British English. Nothing more and nothing less. Not sure what the big deal is.
