I started learning Korean when I was around 13, but I didn’t really take it seriously until a few years later. The biggest reason why was because I was somewhat “ashamed” of learning Korean, especially given my age, and the stigma around Koreaboos. It also didn’t help that many people around me didn’t understand why I’d want to learn Korean over a more “useful” language like Mandarin, Spanish, etc.
Back then, I used to take 태권도, and as weird as it sounds, I would always try to hide the fact that I was even remotely interested in anything Korean. I didn’t want them to think I was only taking 태권도 because of Kpop, and not take me seriously. Looking back, I really regret never telling my Masters that I was learning Korean; I feel like it would’ve really helped me enjoy 태권도 more, and help me learn Korean.

That's really unfortunate. But you're still here learning with us, which is at least a silver lining to that sad story. I hope you're still enjoying your Korean learning journey!

Regarding the Koreabu comment - have you ever heard the advice: "If you decide to study a foreign language, the first thing you need to do is not tell anyone." Do this and nobody will judge you in any way. They also won't bug you to speak Korean to them (they do this in the nicest way, thinking they're encouraging you, but it's really not encouraging). There's some other reasons not to tell anyone - instead of being criticized people might praise you but you haven't even learned anything yet which is also not helpful. I kind learned this lesson on my own over the years and then later heard it online from other people and have found it's really helpful.

What's the issue with them asking you to say a phrase in Korean? It's that stressful?

    • @paulwalther5237

@@Matt-jc2ml I personally feel very awkward being asked this. I often can't say very much until I've studied the language for a really long time either.

It's scary how close my situation is to Aljoscha - I started pretty strong too for about 1.5 years (after work, in the USA) and then on and off since and I am on an upper beginner plateau. It sucks so much! I compare it to Japanese and when I decided to learn Japanese I had heard somewhere that it takes about 6 years to get decently good at it so I used that as a guide. If I wasn't prepared to struggle for 6 years then don't start in the first place. I resisted jumping in for about 4 months before deciding screw it... if it takes 6 years.. it takes 6 years. It was gradual but I think the 6 year guide line was pretty accurate for me. I know you said 3 years in your video but that seems a bit short to me unless they're in Korea and busting their butt. I know you can go on RUclips and people will say they learned Japanese/Korean in 2 years or something and maybe they did but that's exceptional. I can say I have only met 1 person in real life who really learned Japanese to a high level in about 2 years or so. It was a young high school kid from Ireland and I can only think that he was very talented and the right age to do it. I don't really want to just lose 6 years of my life (well maybe 3?) to be good at Korean but sometimes I kind of do. But if you put the time consistently, regardless of the method, I think eventually you'll get results.

Something else for the language exchange question. I lived in Seoul for 3 months in 2018 (before the pandemic), and there were also language cafes in Gangnam and Hongdae that I went to often! For serious language exchange, we would go during the week, and to just meet friends to go out with, we would go on the weekends. Not sure if that is helpful, or still a thing, but it was always a ton of fun!

Having just had a 1 month holiday in Korea this answers literally all of the questions I was stewing with! You're a legend! Maybe a question for next ep... I'm considering going to Korea for a semester of Korean Language Studies next year at Yonsei because I want to go to Korea again :) and figured it might help, is it a waste? Should I come to Korea and just keep immersing or do the course at Yonsei?

Not sure what ships outside Korea, so here's a link to the eBook version of 하루 5분의 초록 - www.aladin.co.kr/shop/wproduct.aspx?ItemId=241473783
As for 지구 끝의 온실, that's available like everywhere and will even be turned into a drama pretty soon. It's available on RIDI books if you'd like a nice walled garden experience.
