Correction: in the video, I refer to a space saver spare. Happily, the Passat actually carries a full size 18” spare wheel. My thanks to the eagle-eyed commenters who noticed this. -Tom
Will keep stating the benefits of the wagon - that said, we know a good SUV when we see one. Also looking forward to driving the new Octavia (and also the Superb Scout - next month!).
Thank you, Tom..!! Why doesn't everyone buy a Passat, They are the most rounded car ever! Quiet, composed, comfortable, roomy, and a cracking thing to drive,..?? Will be my next car..!!
I had a 2014 130TDI Passat wagon, and what a great car. Quiet, supremely comfortably seats, especially for long journeys, and the handling of these things would surprise a lot of people. A few years ago I did a bad thrash from Bright to Mt.beauty on an awesome tight and windy road, and the way the Passat handled it was truly remarkable. It never faltered once. I can only imagine the new Passat would/could possibly be better..?? A hard act to beat..!!
Just bought a used Passat wagon (2018 Comfortline) at the EOFY. I have to say it is a product that as complete as it can be at this price. Compared with so many mid size SUVs that we also looked at, it is just fit for purpose and achieves that value for money. My baby's rear facing car seat fits in perfectly behind my driving position (I am 6 feet tall). The boot is so spacious for all the baby stuff + everything else you need to chuck in and super handy with an electrical tailgate. The infotainment system and driver assist functions are just smart and feel like 21st century. I'd recommend Passat wagons to young families with up to 3 kids. It is the car that addresses all your concerns.
Another professional review Tom. It's refreshing not to hear " gonna go ahead", "with all that being said", " thanks for all the love (???) & support" Give me a break!
Thanks, Cam. The good news is that I think just as the SUV was the response to the (then) unfashionable wagon, the wagon now seems to be the cool alternative to the SUV. Hopefully that sentiment grows.
The issue is height with little ones. It saves your back not having to bend, and I think people just get used to that over time. Our Citroen C4 Grand Picasso is pretty much as high as an SUV without being an SUV, with more room. I'm looking for something with more performance though! Might have to wait for the kids to get a little bigger too. The Scout or Alltrack might satisfy the boss in regards to the extra height, hopefully!
Tom, that was a great review. Sadly in Canada we don't get the German Passat but the American one which even after the redesign still is nowhere near the European version, lots of scratchy plastic, the only advantage is that the rear space is bigger than the European. Keep the good job and the reviews coming.
I have a 2018 comfortline wagon going on 3 years. We love it, so much so that I'll probably look to a 206tsi hopefully alltrack wagon if they make a return, or maybe a scout or superb wagon if they don't! Agree with pretty much everything you say in this review, really makes SUVs feel like a barge when you get in them. I really struggle to see the appeal.
I know, I know ... look, admittedly you do bend over a bit more to put things into the Passat (including baby seats) which I understand might be tiring for some, but I think this car makes up for that in ride, handling, quality, looks, economy .... etc.
I've got a 2019 206TSi R-Line wagon with 4Motion & DCC, great car jam packed full of features. To new buyers I highly recommend speccing one with DCC, you have the 3 stock VW modes or tailor dampers, steering wheel weight to how you want it. Great everyday run around and rapid competent car with the AWD even when it's bucketing down. Put Michelin PSS on, the original Bridgestone run flats are horrid.
Chasing Cars I really enjoy your Class you put in your content you provide. I know this AUS. But to gain more SUBS it would be a real bonus to do the exchange to USD on the screen. Don’t have to announce the numbers just graphics on the bottom or corner. Love the Class act and you have some of the best Presenters who speak clear and without fakery. Loyal Long term Sub.
I’m sure he can do that easily, but it probably won’t tell you much; car prices and tax structures differ hugely between Australia and the US, as do average incomes, so a raw AUD-USD rate-of-the-day figure won’t mean a lot...and will probably scare you, ha!
Thank you, Gene. It's something I can certainly think about, though the crazy fluctuations of the AUD-USD in these uncertain times would make me pause! That said, a ballpark figure of "about $30,000 USD" could be sufficient.
I have a 2017 Passat 132 tsi comfortline sedan. It has been an excellent car. However, the resale value has dropped further than an SUV of similar price due to the greater popularity of the SUV format. I purchased the Passat due to superior interior and technology than other cars of the same price. The car has been completely reliable.
Thanks Tom. I have heard that VW are focusing on SUVs which would explain why the Passat is still on the old platform. Looks like a great car but I’m not sure how much love this is going to get from VW from now on. Keep up the great work.
It’s all good, the Passat is actually on the new platform (MQB) - and happily it’s still high volume in Europe, so I expect to see VW keep it competitive. Anything else would be sad!
Very nice test mate. If you addressing viewers from USA it would be worth to mention engine power in Horse Powers as well. USA and Europe still use it.
Thanks. I do need to get better with putting the conversion up on screen - while Google will do it for you instantly, as CC points out below (ha!), the fact is Australia is the odd one out in using kilowatts. For reference, this car is 140kW = 188hp = 190 PS.
A Alltrack in that spec would be my perfect car, when I sold my Golf Alltrack I was close to getting a Passat Alltrack but didn’t want a diesel and end up getting a Tiguan 132tsi comfortline with the driver assistance package
i bought a great car ... bmw 330i m sport 2022 model. But it is a small car at the end of the day and I quickly realised the mistake. The car is sure fun to drive but I am really tall and the leg space even for driver seat is not enough. this looks like a good buy... sells quite cheap these days
This model Passat has always been underrated and soberly handsome, it might’ve been nice if they had lifted the design if the inside a little but it’s still that tidy, easy to use, highly functional interior so can’t really moan too much, a bit of move towards the Touareg dashboard design might’ve been nice to sexy it up a bit is all.
Thank for awesome review. I was always confused between my first SUV vs Wagon and this video has cleared lots of my doubt. Could you please share your thoughts between Mazda 6 wagon vs Passat Wagon ? Thanks, Ben
That's excellent consumption. Happily, the 140TSI was a bit more economical than I expected - like 6L/100km highway and 8L/100km town, but your diesel would beat that easily, I'm sure.
I love this car. It looks great. Just add a panoramic sunroof and I am good to go. Unfortunately, the U.S. will never get this car. Wagons, especially mainstream ones, don't sell well here, with the exception of the Outback. Great review as usual, Tom! Thanks!
That's sad. Hopefully they make a comeback some day. Given our increasing awareness of vehicular emissions, and the inherent higher energy consumption (whether electric, hydrogen, petrol or diesel) of taller, heavier vehicles (i.e. SUVs), a wagon comeback is more than a possibility.
Hi. Love the videos. You mentioned this car wireless Apple CarPlay. I have a Samsung. Are there any new cars on the market here in OZ with wireless Android Auto?
Thanks for adding some detail, Antonio. I haven’t heard of it in factory systems but BMW have said they’re doing a software update later this year to add wireless Android Auto.
Great review Tom. I am wanting to switch back to a wagon after owning an SUV. Have been eyeing off the Skoda Superb Scout. How do you feel about this car vs the Skoda?
Sounds like a plan, Jeremy. I’m driving the Scout in about a month and will have a video out soon after that - I look forward to letting you know my thoughts. Also on the horizon is the Passat Alltrack 162TSI which will split the difference in performance.
Agreed Tom this is a great wagon with no need for frills and does what it says on the box although to nit pick I’d like it with the Golf GTI outputs but that’s just my right foot speaking :)
That’d be good - but VW have heard that, as the Alltrack will be fitted with the 162TSI here in Australia (though that’s some way short of the current GTI’s 180TSI).
Great review, Tom, but it’s such a shame that the soft touch materials and electric seat adjustments are not being replicated in the current VW 2.0T AWD Troc. Both these two VW stablemates are priced approximately the same $.
Yes! The Passat Alltrack is on its way back with the 162kW/350Nm 2.0T petrol. It should arrive soon. In the meantime, the closely related Škoda Superb Scout with 200kW has already arrived and we’re driving it late next month.
Is the new 206 tsi going to be 200 tsi like the superb, with that awful PPF? Also any comments on the lights? Are they matrix - and on the matrix ones, are they worth it? They look like they'll be very good to have. Can you also give your opinion of this vs the 508?
VW haven’t confirmed yet, but there has been a weird pattern with the Skodas picking up the PPF while the Volkswagens go without it, so it’s actually quite difficult to guess. The lights were pretty bog standard fixed LED - nothing special but bright enough; they’re not Matrix. As for the Pug: the 508 feels sportier and more agile, and the interior has more verve, but the Passat is quieter, more settled, more practical and it feels a bit more solid. It almost goes without saying that the VW will depreciate slower! That said, they’re both lovely cars and I would be happy to own either.
As an American viewer one of the primary reasons I subscribe to "Chasing Cars" is to stoke my envy of vehicles available in Australia that we're denied in the US. In the case of the Passat it's a double insult. VW has come to understand that Americans want their VW's to be bigger and cheaper than consumers in international markets. And while SUV mania is a worldwide phenomenon it's nowhere as prevalent anywhere beyond North America. Thus in America we get a vehicle with the Passat moniker that is built in America and is larger, cheaper, and not nearly as premium as the model available in Europe and beyond. And because Americans have almost totally abandoned wagons (and minivans) for SUV's we don't see an "estate" version of a Passat, at all. With the death of the Golf wagon and the AllTrack no VW wagons are left. Nor for that matter is there a wagon version of the Mazda6. In what we term the "mainstream" marketplace only the Subaru Outback remains and Subaru styles and refers to it as an SUV. Sad, sad, sad for those of us who love wagons.
That is a sorry state of affairs, Stephen. A great shame that the Golf wagon range won't be sold in America any more - but I hope for a wagon comeback some day.

Love the videos, mate. When showing the outside of the car and it’s lights, etc, perhaps don’t run your hand along the lights or under the letters on the back of the car as it’s a bit unnecessary and was a bit awkward to watch. I’m not sure if it felt awkward for you as well. A close up shot of the particular features you are discussing should suffice. Other than that, you’re golden! Look forward to seeing your channel grow.
What's with the massive black rectangle with four massive bolt holes on the front bumper where the number plate goes? I get that a Euro number plate would fit there, but it just looks cheap and out of place anywhere else. Does anyone else hate this about the look?
I have mixed feelings on the Infotainment screen size in all cars. Back in 1978 when digital readout for clocks and MPG on Caddy’s and a few other makes made you think here comes the Digital age along with 1980 and the Electronic Gauge readout for Fuel, MPH, Temp. It was expensive and the Future. Now we see how Time can make screen look so outdated and be a turn off on the used car market. But, an Upgradable system is nice until the processor is to small to handle the updates. I like 8 inch screens and I have mixed feelings about anything bigger and distracting.
I also have mixed feelings. I prefer a handsome set of analogue gauges to a badly executed digital screen ahead of the driver. If you’re going to put a screen there, it needs to actually work well and do something the gauges cannot - like display a full map, in the VWs and Audis. If it’s just going to be a digital screen displaying a representation of traditional gauges, what’s the point?
Thanks, Hernan. Am still considering Patreon or other avenues, but for now, the huge generosity in our viewers to subscribe, comment and share is having an impact.
Your Australian style passat is not a real passat. A lot of your complains are in the passat in the european version. So its a really stupid review if youre not living in Australia.
@@chasingcars Youre complaining about not having an active info display or an electric trunk opener or not having an 8" infotainment. All of them are available right now, but you said that the active info display isnt. Everything costs extra money I think your complain about having it standard because of 45k% price tag is unreasonable. It is a common price policy if you compare it to any other mid-luxury car
If you listen to my comments closely, I didn’t complain about the lack of an Active Info Display. I merely noted it, and said that those who want it will need to wait for the 206TSI. My complaint about the 8” low-res display is entirely founded. The Tiguan Highline, which costs about the same, has the high-res 9.2” screen, so all I’m asking for is consistency there. The same goes for an electric tailgate which is almost always standard at this price.
Correction: in the video, I refer to a space saver spare. Happily, the Passat actually carries a full size 18” spare wheel. My thanks to the eagle-eyed commenters who noticed this. -Tom
Absolutely love the Passat.
I'd never take an SUV over a wagon, they just handle so much worse and often cost more.
Happy you think so too :)

@@chasingcars i got your idea, i drove the last model once, and i love it too, but i still go for tiguan maybe t-roc after i watch your previous clip
Didn’t recognise you with the new hairdo
I don’t think I’ve ever changed my haircut!
Your Australian style passat is not a real passat. A lot of your complains are in the passat in the european version. So its a really stupid review if youre not living in Australia.
Not sure what this is supposed to mean. Our Passat comes from Germany - ergo, it's a "real Passat".
