Unless you drive a Touareg. Or a Golf. Or an Arteon. There are much more interesting VWs out there but people only ever buy base Jettas and Passats or maybe an Atlas if you have kids. Those are not real VWs. They're americanized compliance machines.

I hate to say this, but the question is... why would you buy this over something like a Camry? I get buying an Audi or BMW over a Toyota, but this? This is even blander and older than something like a Camry, while being more unreliable. I just can't think of a reason why *anyone* would buy a new Passat when it is so mediocre in every way. The Golf or Arteon are cool, which I get why people buy them, but this is just... meh.

6:05 - I'm 90% sure this behavior is due to a torque converter decouple mode, which is used for fuel economy. It saves the engine from the added drag of spinning the torque converter unnecessarily when at a stop. Alfa Giulias have the same thing in their ZF transmissions. You feel the RPMs rise slightly when you come to a complete stop, and then a slight delay to get going when you take your foot of the brake.

    • @apathyzen9730

@@MrConor159 VW group models have three modes of fuel economy display:
      1. Long term (up to 100 hours of driving)
      2. Since last refuel.
      3. Since "last" start. (resets three or four hours after stopping the engine). Short-term.
There's fuel economy since start, so it probably includes all the idle time while filming interior shots and maybe some aggressive driving.
Idle time is included in fuel economy, of course.

With that being said I also currently own a 2019 Passat that I picked up recently and picked this car to buy over the other competition because I have also owned a 2010 Passat which I loved. Which I why I decided to get another one. The Passat is a wonderfully designed car that has a feel of refinement that you just can’t get with the competition. This car definitely still hold it’s own with nothing to prove with a dying sedan segment. Yeah, it’s on the bland side which I absolutely love and means it will age gracefully. It drives magnificently with zero drama and everything is well thought out in the vehicle and very buttoned down. Wonderful review gooser.. and a wonderful classy car.

Local dealer has a couple of new leftover 2020 Passat SEL Premiums for $25,000. I'm seriously considering one. I just need something roomy (I'm 6'3"), quiet and comfortable for long trips that's well equipped. I don't think I can find anything that fits that bill better for the price. There's no way I'd pay $33,000 for one when it was the current year, but discounted this much for a new one still sitting on the lot, yeah, I might.

The EU Passat was given a mild facelift too for 2020 and its’ levels of refinement and quietness are regularly compared favourably with the luxury marques. It is certainly lighter, but FAR more rigid torsionally and for bending than the US Passat platform, which as the reviewer says, was designed over 10 years ago. One advantage to this that is apparent from looking at the underpinnings, is that you could probably rebuild the entire suspension for about a grand, if you did the work yourself. There's something to be said for that, and it's very VW-like. Looking at some of the newer multilink suspensions makes me shudder at the thought of replacing all those arms and ball joints. My wife has the current EU Passat, company car. Looks good to me, far better than the NA new model. I've driven this thing on holidays with the kids and a full trunk. Super comfortable for long motorway journeys with driving assistance (adaptative cruise control is great). The infotainment is good.
Would I chose this over my E92 330i (N52 NA 6 cyl 272hp with sport suspension) or harsh riding SEAT Leon CupraR, both for a bit of fun and involvement? Of course not, on short trips anyway, like daily commute to work or a spirited drive at the weekend.
However, on long journeys with kids the Passat has proved me it is a better solution and better value proposition if I had to buy one. I don't look for excitement in this scenario. Comfort, practicality, driving assistance, decent looks in the EU model.

As for the car, well, I'll say this: Foreign car companies make the same mistakes. When they design for the local market, they go native and end up with a product that looks and feels like a domestic product. They forget that the locals love their products in the first place because of their distinctive, foreign design. My advice is for the Japanese and German companies to shutdown their design studios in North America and sell us the same products they sell in their home countries. Obviously, the market for Japanese Kei cars may be limited here. But, I for one, would prefer a European Passat than one numbed down for NA.

To me, the epitome of automotive excellence is a sport sedan. And by sport sedan I mean the version of 20 years ago, not the track cars of today. A balance of ride comfort, handling, and some pep. In other words, a daily driver that is comfortable on long trips, but has enough sport to entice you to take the back roads home. I bought a used 2014 Passat with the VR6 a couple of years ago. I love mine. But, I don't disagree with you. I test drove a 2016 Passat TSI and it was everything you said this was. Call me crazy, but I appreciate the blandness of the exterior and what you convey as blandness of the interior, I see as efficient use of space. You're absolutely right, nothing exciting about it. That's why I opted for the 3.6 VR6, it surprises the most uninterested. If I'm at a stop light and an Infiniti G37 or a Honda Accord or any other other jdm with an aftermarket exhaust is next to me, they will be surprised by how quick the Passat with the VR6 is stock.
And you're right, I have a knack for spreadsheets, I'm a manager, and crave efficiency. My calendar is full and I lead a very boring life. But that's not completely me. That's why MY Passat with the VR6 is a perfect match for me. It's boring most of the time, but when I crave a little excitement it delivers and surprises while doing so.

My dad drives the new one and it is the perfect car for people who just want something relatively nice looking that will run for a long time

We are living in the age that Jetta and Passat are more boring than Camry and Corolla... Hyunda/KIA is the new VW.
