7:43 what a game changer. what people who drive for long periods need is cooling. heated seats are only good for the first minutes of short trips while the rest of the cabin heats up. cooling the driver can be a helpful aid for hours at a time. making contact for long periods of time with car seats can cause uncomfortable levels of perspiration, even in cars with air conditioning and premium materials.

It saddens me that there won't be a sedan, I've had two of them. Of course even the sedan was available, VW pulled the car from the South African market. A Passat Sportline 2.0T has been the most reliable car I've ever owned, and that's even above (other German cars I've had) Merc GL500 and BMW 320i

    • @e7234
      @e7234 10 месяцев назад +7

this vw wasn't designed and made by volkswagen. In this case everything was created by skoda. You can get a skoda superb which this time is not only based on the same platform but both cars were developed in parallel by skoda. Pricewise they are literally the same in Europe. So you can still buy the equivalent car to the passat and also it comes with a better boot as the windows opens with the boot. It is no longer a traditional sedan but a liftback

I own a 2017 Alltrack SEL and love it. Practical, good-looking with AWD for going up to Tahoe and taking on rainstorms, it's also pretty good on gas and drives 8/10ths like my Mk7 GTI. After 42k, it has been utterly reliable with the exception of a sunroof leak that took 3 trips to the dealer to finally fix. Lastly, I got it with the 'lighting package' which all cars should have standard, it's that good. The only thing that could improve it is a diesel... but I guess that will never happen again. Sadly, VW has given up on Estates over here in the USofA. Instead we just get more and more SUVs including the awful I.D.4. So sad. I owned a 5th-gen Passat wagon too and loved that car as well. Soooooo much space, there was hardly anything I couldn't put into it and yet it was easy to park! Also, we DON't get the Audi A3 hatchback. You Brits get all the good stuff!

I've already driven a rather old Passat. I think it was the B7 model and it had a pretty cheap spec. However even after the 200,000 kilometres it had to endure, it drove so insanely well. It didn't have massage seats back then and also no voice assistant. But just as you said, there is so much space and I can confirm you get less tired than in cars in the same price class. The seats and the passive suspension made it so comfortable over bumps and in fast corners.
I believe that this car can do all those listed things better. But I'm not sure if I'd choose it over the old one. First of all I'm not fully convinced of the new design. The front bumper looks a bit weird. Like someone put a concept car bumper on an old car. The door to rear boot is awful. It seems like someone crashed into your car and thereby moved the door in.
The next thing is that I'm a fan of manual gearbox and the strong older passat 2.0 Diesel engines, capable of 240+hp and close to 500nm of torque (although these two options can't be combined).
Overall I'm still a big fan of the Passat series and VW has done what people and regulations demand nowadays and I would definitely consider this car when buying a new one.

As one Italian designer said, you don't make a car for consumers' tastes, you make a car that they will buy. I don't understand why manufacturers slap a large screen, a tablet on the dashboard, and make the dashboard uglier?

You don't get the 690 ltr capacity boot with the plug in hybrid btw, the battery robs some of the boot space.

I was wondering that too when we were shown the boot space initially, the level of the loading bay 'floor' was way too high compared to my current B7 estate. It looked like an electric/hybrid but that wasn't revealed till later in the review.

While i love the dynamic chassis control on my golf the front shocks are £1300 to replace and the rears £1100. The fronts start misting after not long at all and despite any mechanic you speak to saying they are poor quality VW &K will not consider misting as a warranty issue.

I've driven the current model quite a bit. It's pretty much all the car you need if a bit long for parallel parking in town. The seats are also very good though the sweaty arse relief could come in handy on a long run.

1:21 Great choice VW, just look how much better car looks when you do not force unibrow lights!
Now ditch them also on the rear.
And bring back all physical controls like in the old cars (circular AC control knobs)!

3:43 with those EQS-style wheels this could easily be mistaken for a CLA Shooting Brake. Which would be awesome for VW sales down here in Singapore because we really love our Mercs (they were at one point the best-selling make and have always been in the top 3.)

Nice lines on that car. Beautiful looking wagon style. have to research reliability before purchase. The higher the tech, the more can go wrong, not to mention expense. I'm always weary of new models that are typically rushed to market before the bugs are worked out.

It was right of VW to ditch the saloon (sedan) version, as Europeans (at least) no longer buy saloon cars. But I think VW missed a trick by not offering a large hatchback version of the Passat, as these are still bought across Europe. The Audi A4, A5, plus ones by BMW, and Honda, as examples.
How would the Passat estate fare against both the Skoda Octavia, and Superb estate cars?

I've got a great idea for all these massive screens that look like an afterthought that's been bolted to the dashboard. Rip the f***ing thing out and fit some good old switches and dials.
At least it's an estate which is ten times better than an SUV.

Well let's hope it's reliable. My Golf 8 GTE was nothing but trouble. In the 25+ years I've been in the Motor Trade it was hands down the worst car I've ever had. The technology was always going wrong. Ended up with a new steering wheel, new infotainment screen, replacement cameras for the lane keep assist. Oh and the central locking didn't work properly and VW didn't have a fix for it. Was glad to see the back of it.

Good review. Curious to see one in real life, as the design is starting to grow on me. Looking to buy a new family car in the next year or so, and it's awful to see how many brands are turning SUV-only. Still, interesting to see how it'll compare to the Superb, price and quality, because the main rival to the Passat is coming from its own group.
