I live in New Mexico. I love the way you have covered different towns around my state. I wish this was not your last place in new mexico to cover.
I grew up in Tucumcari during its heyday before the interstate bypass. We had over 10,000 people living there then. I bought the record soundtrack to The Good,The Bad, and The Ugly in Sands-Dorsey drugstore.
Classy video SSS i hope you dont ever stop..wonderful presentation…Marty must be very proud of you..you just keep getting better at this game.
There is something very special, something beautiful in abandoned places. I guess it's the ghosts of history beckoning us to see and appreciate it. To find out it's secrets. If you're on Flickr, there are some great groups posting photos in this same vane. Sally and Marty certainly have that appreciation in their travels. Great videos kids!
Hope to see ya up north pretty darn soon then! My Mom was raised on Mid Lake in Woodruff. She's doing quite well at 92, and now in IL. She worked for the DNR at Trout Lake as a teen. Have a good one, and I'll be in my old "Hot Rod" pickup, riding with my old dawg "Boomer"! Happy Holidays 🐰🥚🐣🐤
Good stuff
Professora Sally, a Canção que eu não conhecia é lindíssima! Michael Martin Murphey - Land Of Enchantment! Gratidão. Parabéns pelo seu Trabalho! "I met a lady in my drifting days
I quickly fell under the spell of her loving ways
A rose in the desert I loved her so
In the land of enchantment, New Mexico"
Sally and Marty, have a Great and Glorius Week!
You do such a wonderful job of explaining everything. Marty also adds tidbits of information too.
You guys do a great job thank you.
I have to admit, the 50s and 60s were the pinnacle for the 'American' experience. So many folks can remember travelling across country on the L:incoln Hwy or Rt 66 on vacation with their parents on their way to sunny CA, Disneyland and everything else the west coast had to offer so different from 'back home'.
I used to stop there OFTEN....toook-um-kerry ....yup sho'nuff .....had a great cafe there in the 1980's....you are saying it right.....it was a busy place when I was around there(of course that was a couple of years ago)
I stopped here on my way to Tucson last year (live in West Bend ❤). I didn't have time to sight see but you did it for me. I stayed at the Fairfield Inn. I ate dinner at La Cita which is off the old route 66. Really good Mexican food. I actually stayed and ate here again on the way home. Cool little city. Hope to stay here again if I can get my 60 year old stomach to work somewhat normal again. 😊
I like the old bank that is now an antique shop. Thanks for taking us there
Well and respectfully done, thank you. Born and raised in Tucumcari.
Have loved your coverage of all the forgotten towns in New Mexico. Heard you say something about heading through Oklahoma next. Would be really awesome if you came through my town of Cushing. Keep up the awesome videos. Stay safe and God bless.
Steve from Oklahoma
Great camera 📸 shots Sally and Marty
Marty, a man of few words, but, speaks volumes.
Ty again for sharing your travels . Wishing you and yours a Wonderful Easter Sunday ❤
Rt. 66 in the west, iconic signage and architecture.
Before leaving New Mexico you must go to Lincoln and Ruidoso. Lincoln ..Billy the Kid town. Wortley Hotel. We use to take a drive out of Ruidoso to go to Lincoln and have lunch at the Wortley Hotel. Then Ruidoso is paradise on Earth and has an interesting history and currently is interesting as the Playground of the Southwest!!! It's also where all Texans vacation. It's essentially Little Texas but in the mountains of Ruidoso, NM. There's a ski resort, race track and everything else in between. Gorgeous and very scenic place.
I'm surprised you didn't drive up there when you were in Roswell. It's about an hour away, up in the mountains. Seems like so many RUclipsrs don't know anything about Ruidoso. They'll drive to White Sands, Cloudcroft, Roswell, Carlsbad etc..and completely miss the 45 minute drive up the mountains from Alamogordo to find paradise... Ruidoso!!!❤❤
Great vlog. Love you and Marty's adventure,s. Stay safe and Happy Easter 🐣 ❤️
Like this a lot, the historical details of the town make it come alive. Quality work, thanks.
Maybe Clint Eastwood will watch and chime in on the pronunciation of Tucumcari. 🙂
Unfortunately COVID lockdowns killed about 40% of all small biz in NM, but over the last year we have really seen an explosion of new business! Thanks for the spotlight on our little town!
Turns out the fires in 2012 were set by one of the Tucumcari police officers and his friend. Look up Dustin Lopez. Very sad.
That's Too Cool 😎 for school....sister!😁👍
Great video! I’m dying to visit Dunn’s funeral home.😉
Awesome ! You all found a pay phone booth 😅 Very Rare 🎉 great Video
I used to be an avid 66'er. I had to drive across the USA 6 times a year. @ 23:46 over your left shoulder, & before the bush was the room, I spent the night in. All of it was original, even the AC, the cable TV , which was set on a porn station, (Just kidding, cable was an .) It took a while for the AC, but it did cool down the room. I wanted to spend the night in Tee Pee, but they were closed too. I had dinner at Dells, Great food. Thanks for sharing, drive safe. 🤠
Love that old brick building at the beginning of your video on Tumcumcari! Always got to talk to a local on how to pronounce words. Love the native American story on the name of the town origin. Old theaters are always interesting and it's a shame if it can't be restored! Wow that is cool about the original bank vault being inside the now antique store. Shame about the fire destroying that building. Wow the stories of the old hotel are interesting! Love that the one building still has the hard wood floors. The train depot and the history of the rail line is nice. Glenlock motel should be restored. A lot of areas in Southwest were supposed to be good areas to treat respiratory diseases. Yes we need to keep history alive like the bathhouse. Too bad a lot of places like the POW Wow Inn are slowly falling apart.
Nice video. Well done, very well done. A shame so many empty, lonely old buildings standing on 66 in all 8 states. I fear many wont be standing for much longer
I loved your "spooky music" I was half expecting Dracula to pop into the scene or at least a floating ghost to hover over you. lol...and who else sang the jingle "Fat Kids, skinny kids.." when the camera paused a bit over the old Armor Hotdog ad?
I can’t believe my FB comment about Marty entering to the theme for The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
Growing up in New Mexico and have been or traveled thru alot it seeing it in your videos is cool and being in the Army also I've seen alot of the country and choose to stay in the Southwest Thanks, Samuel from Vegas that lives in Vegas NV
I agree SSS, you are documenting for those in the future. Think if all those movies that people took over the years were in a repository instead of laying in an attic or box in the basement. Thank you so much. Appreciate you and Hubby.
Tucumcari was the former Rock Island Lines/Southern Pacific railroad train and engine crews change point for the former Rock Island Lines crews based out of Dalhard, TX and the SP RR crews based out of Tucumcari and worked to and from Vaughan, NM. Final run of the remaining passenger train service through Tucumcari, was made on February 21, 1968. And the crew change point in Tucumcari was eliminated and now the UP RR road crews work through between Dalhart, TX and Vaughan, NW.
Outstanding video/tour!! Thanks for that last look at New Mexico on your way home. 👍😄
The VFW signs looks like an old music note for a piano shop
The movie was made in Italy with an Italian director. Maybe why Lee said it that way. I've gone thru Tucumcari many times over the years. Before I-40 was completed it was a bustling litte burg. Wife and went thru there about 10 years ago and i was really shocked at how much it had gone downhill.
Love your channel!
Love those "old" hardwood floors! Wish I could afford to lay hardwood in my house. So jealous of that store! I hope they appreciate what they've got and don't take it for granted because it's been there so long.
I only knew the pronunciation of Tucumcari based on the Little Feat song called Willin'.
Always wish I could restore stuff like this, but then I love the arrested decay too...
Nice town. Be safe.
I have yet to spend any time in Tucumcari, but back in the early 1960's (pre Amtrak) I would take the train from Phoenix to Chicago to visit my Dad back in Milwaukee. He would pick me up at Union Station in Chicago. Back then the train was along the Chicago, Rock Island, and Pacific line. At El Paso it would split, with one part heading on to New Orleans, and the other headed up roughly along US 54 across New Mexico (including Alamogordo and Tucumcari) on into Kansas and beyond. I think my love of New Mexico started with those train trips back in my teenage days.🙂
Never saw Tucumcari in the middle of the day arriving after dark and seeing it as the sun came up. Many thanks for sharing.
Lee Van Cleef is the only man that can make Chuck Norris blink in a stare down.
Beautiful place! Thank You & Regards from Ody Slim
Love your adventures😊😊😊
Sally Lee Van Cleef must have driven all the way Route 66! Haha!
I just recently found your channel. You're doing a great job on my state. We seem to rank 1 or 2 or 49 to 50 on so many lists. Anyway, seriously, I read where termites invaded San Jon years ago and ruined most the wood framed buildings into dust or bug feces. The town is on the NM-Texas border on I-40
s
Just going back in my mind (could be wrong) ....when y'all were in St Vincent thrift store ...I think that was the old J.C.Penney's .....but...been a long time since I was down in those parts
You missed Kix on 66 in Tucumcari! It’s the absolute best place for breakfast within 100 miles!
Grrrreat!!
We could hook that theater to Marty's belt and y'all just take it right on back to Wisconsin....no problem
Sure hope you can catch my fam tribute. My great grandfather had the 1st windmill, worked on the 1st railroad near 66, and an original pioneer Richard D Baker. My cuz is his name sake, still is out there and did this please look see it✌🏼 about 24.5 miles east of Amarillo, Texas is this fantastic leap of faith/imagination in the form of a peace park apparently conceived and built by one Richard Daniel Baker, born June 19, 1951
Love Tucumcari. I always stop there when I'm crossing New Mexico.
Glad to see some businesses along route 66 still open. Motel Safari is one place I remember. Aww the Palomino😄. Thanks for sharing about Tucumcari!!
When life deals you lemons, make lemonade! Yep!
12:52
Thanks for the tour you two! 😍
🤠👍
Happy Easter All! 🌷
Strange how Clint Eastwood didn't correct Lee Van Cleef as he worked in Tucumcari during the filming of Rawhide from 1959 to 1966. The picture at 7:06 is the Princess theater burning, and it was never rebuilt. So it's probably still a mess. I moved here in 2005 and the town had become smaller every year. Since the Covid years, more are moving here. Probably because you can still buy a house in town for about $30 k and very little crime exists. So if you can work remote, or are retired it's cheap. We have two huge lakes nearby, Ute Lake and Conchas Lake. Ute lake has a town with it, Logan, NM but Conchas Lake is basically just the lake, so bring a lunch.
Cleef was also a Ninja! Remember!
Just an FYI, the VFW is still active ;)
Nice video Sally isn't that the town where that thing comes out every 23 years to feed for 23 days oh I'm sorry dang gone that's the wrong movie you guys stay safe stay happy and healthy👍✌️
Great Video
Another outstanding video. Thank you. Be careful on your travels. Happy Easter.
good to see you both back out there! right on!
Great video, sorry to see you leave New Mexico. Still so much to see.
As I can tell by your Instagram, Sally: You and Marty are back in WI and FREEZING! Who'da thunk April would still be winter but...In hindsight, I bet you two wished you'd have 'lingered' a bit in the southwest before heading back home!
Awesome video, thank you!
We're heading for Tucumcari next week!
Awesome! Have fun 🤩
Your discussion of the pronunciation of town and city names makes me think of two local pronunciations that we live with near Springfield, Illinois. Spelled the same as the capital of GREECE, a small town near Springfield is pronounced A - thens, NOT AY thens. We also have a town near Springfield spelled NEW BERLIN, but instead of pronouncing it New Burr LINN, like the capital of Germany, locals pronounce the town's name New BURR linn. Tucumcari reminds me of the towns in the movie Cars, Little towns on Route 66.
Loved your New Mexico series. Drive safe.
💜
Good music
M-A-R-T-Y!
Six Shooter Siding was the wooliest town in the West, beating out Dodge City Kansas for the number of gunfights and murders.
No wonder Van Cleef got it wrong .He was on location in Italy
We all in my family Two Canerys.
👍
i have the old route 66 tv series on dvd.
Nice Huckleberry Hoodie, where'd ya get it ❓❓❓
The Flying J east of town in where I overnight on my migration back to Hudson Wisconsin from Palm Springs California. But ya gotta get there by 4 PM or it fills up. The Loves across the street is pretty much noisy truckers. BYPASS Oklahoma City by take US 54 north to hook up with KC.
Marty was right! Lee Van Cleef got off that train right there!
Please visit the Four Corners:]
Should have kept the pool & bath house !
You and wunderhussy must be identical twins seperated at birth 😊 love you both 😊
This Train stops at Tukumkari - For a few Dollars more
by the way the route 66 tv series run from 1959 to 62.
❤
When are you and Marty posting another video?
2cam carry my husband s family is from New Mexico.
So Wisconsin is the mission now??
Did you attend lake Superior college they played Whittier college in calif. A few years back, Pres. Nixon's almamater.
Illinos can blame it's pronunciation oddities on the French Explorers mixed with the later Appalachian Settlers.
Care O, Cairo
Vy Anna, Vienna
Buck Koo, Beaucoup
Many places are named after Egypt cities such as Memphis
If you're still on Oklahoma, check out Davenport and Ketchum. Dad used to live there. (In Davenport ck out the Masonic Lodge PM me for a local contact)
We have a town that was eaten by termites
Interesting. Tell me more please!
Thank you for pronouncing President Roosevelt's name correctly. Roose, not Rose.
Tucumcari is pronounced like the locals pronounce it not Clint Eastwood or Hollywood I live here in New Mexico and the pronunciation in the movie is wrong
Awesome video but unless you can show official documentation Route 66 never ran down Main Street. It's always been Route 54 but never 66.
Here’s where you can get “proof” of that information on Route 66: from the archives at the library in Tucumcari.
No, it's always sound at the end like Mary. Welcome to the Mandela Zone
Pronounced two come carry
It's just the typical American way of mispronouncing names and words, like wolf for instance, Americans always say woof, instead of pronouncing it with the "L" or roof, pronounced ruff, instead of the oo sound. There is a lot more, but I think this gets the point across.
