I hate how a simple job turns into a shtmess for me everytime. Was going good until one of the clutch spring bolts head snapped right off after barely getting any resistance. I guess I'm glad it didnt happen after i closed it all up. But ordering 6 more bolts, $40
Thanks for the great video! Replaced my clutch recently with the your guide as help :) However, is it normal to have a fair amount of drag on a newly changed clutch? I've got a WR450F from 2016.
@@UpAllNight91 While pushing the bike (engine hot or cold) in gear, holding the clutch lever in, you feel that the clutch is still engaging. The rear tyre doesn't drag on asphalt but definitely would on gravel. With the engine running, bike in first gear and clutch in, the bike rolls in walking pace. I have no problems with stalling during takeoff or while changing gears. Another noticeable thing is that I can't get it into neutral when it's running.
@@vossenzwe7637 Yeah thats a lot of drag. I have seen some aftermarket plates that can do this. I have also seen this happen when the steal plates where reused. Usually if all fiber and steal are OEM and new it usually comes out as good as a new bike.
@@vossenzwe7637 Yeah that is strange. Maybe open her back up and check everything out. Check make sure the nut in the middle that holds the clutch basket on is good and tight, and all the plates where put in properly. Double check for basket and hub wear and stuff like that.
Thanks! The yz450 takes about 850cc of oil to reach the oil level check bolt. As you may know, the glass window is a low level window and it even says low right beside it. But 850 cc of oil will get you right to the full check bolt and it where I suggest running it. These oil filters on these bikes drain most of thier oil out and back to the bottom of the motor if the motor has been sitting for a few hours. 850cc is good with both changing the filter and not, as long as its been sitting for a few hours
Hey so on the 2021 yz250f on the clutch plates they have 3 groves around each clutch plate. I’m not sure if you have worked on a yz250 yet but if you have are they all supposed to be lined up with each other. On the 450s they don’t have the 3 groves on the fiber plates
Yes I have. The grooves on the very end of the fiber plates do not need to be lined up. They really don't do anything. But I have OCD and like to line them up when installing clutch just because it looks good lol
Your welcome. Its totally ok to use a torque wrench on them bolts and nut. Just be sure to follow the manual on the torque specs. You will need to lock it in from spinning while torqued though.
@@ogloc119 Depends who you ask lol. I'm not even kidding you either. Some people get upset if you dont use a torque wrench on every single bolt no matter how much experience you have. If you trust your hands you will be ok doing it by hand. The bolts for the clutch springs dont need to be too tight or you can snap the clutch inner hub, and the center nut is kinda thin so too much torque is not good for it but it does need a fair amount of torque to hold well.
i broke one of my clutch spring bolts today hand tightening them... after inspecting my clutch it looks like it got a little warm and some of the plates got burnt im assuming the bolt was weakened by becoming hot at one point. all i could think of.
Hello, thanks for the video. I have a 2011 and bought oem clutch kit and just ripped open all bags of friction plates and soaked the over night and randomly put all friction plates on and metal plates w/o the grooved end toward motor. after resembled everything the bike doesn't disengage all the way with clutch pulled in. so after throwing away all bags the friction plates came in is there a way to tell which plates are which? I also tried adjusting cable and it is all the way out and tried prying (gently) the clutch lever on the motor and it won't pull in anymore so i'm assuming the order of friction plates and the beveled edge towards motor is crucial??? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
Hello. I think if you measure the thickness of the fiber plates with a micrometer there is a measurable difference between the ones with different part numbers. But even if you got that wrong, as long as its fiber, steal, fiber arrangement it should at least work. Because yours is not disengaging I'm guessing there's more wrong inside there than just fibers out of arrangement. I would pull the clutch back out. Try to measure them and get the arrangement right, then reinstall. After installing clutch plates but before putting the clutch cover back on, adjust the clutch lever and pull the clutch in while observing the clutch pressure plate. Does the plate raise up off the clutch stack a millimeter or two while pulling in the lever? If so you should be good, if not then something is missing or not right in the clutch push rod/pressure plate area, check again
Hey man, when I pull my clutch lever in my bike won’t roll, any clue what I’d need to do to fix it? Bike was drowned and doesn’t run currently trying to get everything figured out before I try starting it up, TIA
Hello. The clutches could have some rust on the steal plates. But I would get her running again first and try riding it and see if it improves. Sometimes the clutch plates can clean up after a ride and be ok.
@@UpAllNight91hey man one more question replaced all the plates exactly how you did in the video and now my clutch lever has no tension even when completely tightened. Any clue what this might be? Thanks
@@YaBoyCoye Ok. Your going to need to take it back apart and check everything. It could be missing the little ball bearing that goes down the center shaft (it can fall out while doing the job and easily gets lost). Recheck everything and put it back together but before you put the cover back on, pull the clutch lever and verify its lifting the pressure plate.
Hey im looking for some advice on a 12 yfz450 carb version. I did a top end rebuild and the clutch engaged when it blew up and now it wont engage. I pull in the lever in when in 1st gear or any gear and the qaud wont move freely. Any advice what may be the problem? Thanks
