- An old Sony Hi-8, actually the first Hi-8 in the sub compact chassis that Sony made gets an overhaul. Can this old dinosaur be made to work like new. Lets find out.

You are just what I needed to to take out my old Sony TR705E, which is very similar to yours. With your instructions I was able to take it apart, localize the foulty Caps, same as on your machine, absolutly genious that you showed the Slide Resistor for the Focus and how to clean it! And beautiful how you talk through thr whole procedure.
You have just got yourself a new subscriber, Thanks for the excellent Video
Like ringing a bell for you. Was amazing watching you work with your big hands when before little tiny hands were in there. Amazing!
Glad you made this one. I saw your other video on ejecting a tape from a dead Sony Handycam, but it was a different model, and I was having a heck of time locating the motor terminal on my 81. Thanks to this one, I know where to attach the power.
You, good sir, have given me hope. I have an old Canon UC10 passed down to me from an old friend who recently passed. It presents almost the exact same symptoms and I thought it was ready for the bin. Now I think I might be able to fix it. Thank you!
Well done dave :-D
I'm always amazed when you bring compact units back to life using capacitors.
I've never had that much trouble with capacitors but it could be how critical a circuit is.
Those units must be very critical, designed with very little component tolerance error.
I needed to test the output of an old car keyfob, the frequency was 433 mhz so i plugged in my old realistic 2005 scanner in, the scanner was dead!, six years not being used just killed it.
Yep it had two caps in the audio stages that had leaked then eaten tracks.
Dam capacitors!.
I love your energy, and this is like an unholy fusion of when I tore down my 1989 Discman D250 to do...something I forget, and when I tore down my 2016 Alpha A6300 to swap the SD reader board. The complexity and density of boards in this unit is like the A6300, but the actual components are similar to what was in the D250. What a fantastic old piece of kit. Cool that you got it working again. And you're right, those old units do still have value, both to hipsters trying to recapture their youth, and to people like me who are trying to transfer the tapes of their youth before they rot. I had no idea the sony tape did that. I hope the model I get on ebay has good caps.
I had that little camera for doing destination weddings (having to fly there) in the early 90's. It was thankfully so small and portable for packing in a suitcase with the other gear, and the output quality was superb for the time. I have no complaints - wasn't a cheap purchase but there was nothing like it. Certainly beat trying to drag a Sony EVW-300 all over the place - that travel case was massive.
Great, I love these videos. I have a "Fujix-8" 8mm camcorder that uses this mechanism and it also has troubles with the tape playback and the sound.
You are an absolute legend, thanks for this amazing video that allowed me to see family tapes I haven't seen properly for too many years! I was concerned the tapes had deteriorated, but it was the same surface mount capacitor issue on my Sony CCD-TR707E I just bridged it and soldered it in and bingo clear picture and now enjoying some great memories. Remind me to buy you a beer :)
Hey you can do that! I accept paypal!

It must be nice to have your skills and knowledge!
Hi, thanks for your video, with your help I just repair an old sony Hi8 camera. Good video.
I bought the Fijix Hi H80 in Dec 1991, which as you're well aware was a Sony CCD-TR81 that was re-branded and sold by FujiX. I took loads of home movies and will now double check my old tapes (almost all, I think, have been digitized with the Sony DCRTRV840 Digital 8 which was backward compatible with the Hi8 standard and could output Hi8 to the IEEE 1394 standard). Thanks for the "heads" up on how dangerous the Sony Particle tapes could be because, 1. Losing "precious memories" of friends at parties, and 2. Clogging up video drum heads. It was a great camcorder that lasted about 9 years and now I know that it was probably a couple of failed capacitors that did it Great video. Very impressed that there were no loose screws - and it worked like new when you finished!
I recorded my silly friends at parties with my tr81 too. Lots of very funny tapes.
Superb job done with your usual care and in depth explanations. Vids like these are invaluable guides for unskilled, unafraid and unauthorised meddlers like me (it's bust anyway so either kill it or attempt to revive it, nothing to lose)
Wonder if my mini DV Sony DC TRV 17e still works? I really ought to transfer those tapes if it's not too late.
Before the tapes crap out
rest in peace Siamese cat, unknown-2002. :'(
Aware that this is old Tech as you stated, still you have to admire what went into the design and manufacture. Humans have come along way since we used to hurl rocks and sticks at each other. Tho we still do that sadly. But hey look what else we can come up with.
Hello, Love you videos. I Have a sony mini DVD camcorder (DCR-DVD7) it has a notorious issue with the actual camera lens all failing/Black out. Would you know if I could swap the lens unit out with another model? or how to find out which one could work? . Doing what I can to save this unique model of Diskcam. Thanks in advance.
This was enjoyable. Thanks
thank you, very informative video.
at that time this model have nice future..it also can record from vcr by linked cable right?
I can appreciate your expertise, that being said is there a good reason to repair a camera that's 20 to 25 years old ?I see used digital format sony video cameras that are a quarter the size for sale used for $20.00, these where made when Betamax players were hot.
Are ceramic caps any good for an application like this?
LOL, my mom and dad's wedding after-party was shot on a Sony VHS tape. It is the only VHS tape in our family that did not last. A 1991 Stop and shop tape and SHG "super high grade" cheap tape that did not even the VHS logo lasted longer.
Some Sony models go sticky and you can use a toothbrush and oven cleaner gentle rubs it clean. Its glue seeping though the rubber.
Is there a setting on a trv98 that allows or not allows playback of hi8 tapes? my trv98 hi8 camera will only play back 8mm, but won't play the hi8. please help!
Dave, have you ever tried baking those sticky Sony tapes? It supposedly solves the problem for a short period, just long enough to archive the content. IIRC, 50-60°C for many hours (12-48h), but do your research, as I looked it up many years ago, and my numbers might be incorrect.
The stickiness is caused by the deteriorated binder, which soaks up humidity from the air. By baking it, you can dry it out, and that stops the stickiness temporarily. I wonder if putting them in a vacuum chamber after heating them up helps reducing the baking time, as the water evaporates much quicker at lower pressure.
The Sony Hi-8 fully working are worth £40 to £60 in U.K, I have repaired 30 to 40 over last 10 years. I pick them up for £5 to £10 from colleges and universities.
This is very helpfull! I am currently looking for a Hi8/Digital8 camcorder. I wondering if you hay any experience with Hitachi cams, like VM-VM965 or similar. Any recommendations?
Don't have much experience with Hitachi. Do have a Sony digital 8 from a client to sell for them. Plays analog and digital. Records in digital .
Where are you located and how much do you charge to repair a TRV98? it's a hi8 but only plays back the 8mm.
I still have my TR81. It hasn't been used in a very long time. I should pull it out and see what happens.
I have the four 8mm tapes including three TDK and one Maxell 8mm tapes, bought them at the yard sale for a quarter of whole tapes and I never had any camcorders that has either Hi8 or 8mm format that I can record one, and it's all new it's all blank and no data at all.
@12voltvids - i can't believe i found a video with my exact camera. Thank you - have this taken apart, and when i hold the top of the 2 acps you have replaced and pinch the other side of the board, i get colour. So i beleive replacing these caps will fix this. The first cap (that you have already replaced) is clearly marked as "r4 220 4V". The one you actually replaced in this video, you call out 33 4V, do you know what the first characters are? Half the cap is blocked with blue marker and I cannot see it. A big help if you could point me to the details of this cap. Thanks so much
I wish we had a camcorder for I don't know how many years. I guess it was 2004 before I had any way to record a video. It's a Kodak digital camera that I still have. It uses 2 AA's but thinks new batteries are flat nowadays. I think it will only accept up to a 2 GB SD card.
I have one of those kodak playtouch cameras, Looks like a little cell phone. Records an excellent picture. uses 2 AA batteries and supports to 32GB.Used to use that to make travel videos
Hi do you know if the old sony CCD tr83 can playback sound thru the camcorder? Only viewfinder Lcd. the manual says move the record button back to standby but mine does nothing. Sound fine with playback through tv.
You need to plug headphones in to get sound on camera unless it has a flip out screen. Then it will have a speaker as well.
I GIVE YOU 10000000000>>> LIKE >>ITS AMAZING REPAIR
well done thank you
I have this exact same camera. You want another one to play with? It has a bad playback picture and now the door is jammed closed and won't open.
finally! after all the electronic repair videos i watched from various people i heard someone say crapaciters. anyway, i think my dad's old hi8 camera dodged a bullet. it hadn't been used in years and I put a tape in and a picture would only show up in ff an rw. after maybe 30 seconds of playing it started working perfectly.
I call them crappacitor all the time.
yes incredible
Thanks SO much! I may try to tackle my TR-81 as well! I paid over $2500USD in 91 for it!! LOL
Yes I know how much it was. Don't remind me.
Its there. Wont show on phone. Need to use pc. I won't put it here as bots will grab it and spam me then I have to kill it and get a new one.
Hi. Great video! I have CCD-TR45E. The problem i have is that when i connect it to the TV or PC the image is dark and looks like it has an emboss effect. In the ocular the played video looks normal. If i understand correctly there is a foulty capacitor somwhere? I would appreciate it if you could point me in right direction to fix my problem.
Thank you.
There are leaking caps on the board. They are surface mount electrolytic types. The liquid that leaks out is corossive and will damage the board. As to which one that is what you will have to determine as I don't know the exact one. This will usually get it running for a short time until the damage caused by the leakage kills the board. And no you can't fix that because it is a multi layer board and the damage happens on internal layers. It wicks in and corrodes the internal layers. Then the fun begins.
@@12voltvids Thank you for your fast reply. I will try to find the foulty one.
I wonder if the modern SMD electrolytic caps have stable electrolyte inside? I am not amazed that Dave can take these to bits and fix them. I AM amazed that he can get them back together again with no bits left over.
I used to get all excited for Friday at the shop as that was camcorder day. If I touched a camcorder before Friday I got yelled at.
Yes that problem was solved long ago.
Guess you're going to condemn it, but I used to punch the hi hole in normal tapes in order to record hi8 on my tv-65. Not easy to get hold of proper hi tapes back in the day around here. Congrats for the repair, it's obsolete valueless stuff now but they are still tech marvels.
I used to punch 8mm to fool my digital 8 deck into thinking it was a hi 8 so I could use the lp speed all the time.
Hi! How do you narrow down which board is the video processing board? I have an old Sony ccd-v5000 and there are several boards inside.
V5000. I had one of those. All the caps on every board need changing. Good luck.
12voltvids hey, thanks. Hopefully not but are there any identifiers for the video processing board?
Having found 2 old Video8 tapes that I recorded on around 20 years ago I managed to get hold of a Sony CCD-TRV30e off ebay for £40 so I could at least play the Sony Video8 tapes back, fortunately it turns out the guy that had owned the camera had it from new and took very good care of it and still had the original box and accessories and by a fluke saw my address and messaged me saying he lived just a short walk away! he saved me £5 postage buy dropping it off in person, so got a bit more history about it and himself (he was a tv repair man years ago) he said it just sat around for years so he sadly decided it had to go, he originally listed it for around £75 but knocked it down to £55 with offers I offered £40 and won and when I played back my old footage it was perfect like I had recorded it the same day!
You were lucky. Most of those old cameras have suffered from the capacitor plague that this one had.
The question that i have is, are they still married?
Who knows.
Ya Dave, my father's got old JVC gr-ax 5, and gr-ax 55 with same capacitor issue ☹️. I could fix this, btw i don't understand wich value is the cap
It should say on the cap itself what value it is
I admire your skill,i dissembled a camcorder but could not get it back together again.😥👍 There was a problem with the camera but by then i had F£$"% it up.(JVC was willing to change the camera).
Getting it back together and having it work is the challenge.
I bought one of those in 1995 when my first granddaughter was born, went through two more grandchildren. In 2005 I archived the tapes to digital and placed the working camera in a church yard sale. Let someone else have the problems.
Parents bought a camcorder similar to this in 1996 albeit with some cosmetic differences (CCD-TRV11) and used it for its intended purpose as a video camera until mid-late 2007. Still works without problems, only issues it ever had were dependent on the tape itself
I have a Mitsubishi VHS HS-U80 S-VHS VCR. I have a problem with the VHS does not rewind it does not fast forward. I want some advice. The belts is new.
Check the pulley attached to the capstan motor. It is known to crack and then slip on the shaft. Check the clutch.
@@12voltvids He is able to read cassettes. The problem is the idler gear system for rewind and fast forward. That's the problem of this vhs hs-u80. I would like you to make a video of this type of vhs u 80.

Are Fuji film Hi8 MPDC tape ok? I have a new 120min
Fuji were fine as we're maxell. Sony were shit.
@@12voltvids Funny, cos sony's audio tapes (pure chrome, cobalt doped ferric and metal particle ones) are quite good even till this day
@@blackhawk606 Sony fe-cr tapes were great but a batch of hl 8 mp and hmpx tapes were garbage.
I actually have many Sony Metal P Tapes and not a single one has these problems you adressed in your Videos, I wonder, is there a difference between the tape formula of America and Europe? Because all of mine work!
The problem affected certain years of production only. They did get the problem resolved in later years. Unfortunately for us stung by bad tape, we changed brands and never went back to Sony.
I have dozens of Hi8 Sony MP tapes from the early 90s on. No problems with any. Currently copying from my GV-D200 to my VRD-MC3. All copies are very nice on DVD. Of course they are 4:3 aspect ratio.

You are lucky. I operate an archive business and see hundreds of tapes a month and the numbers of bad tapes, all Sony is high. 40% of Sony metal p tapes are bad.
I have a Sony CCD-V701 from 1991. It’s very sentimental to me, has cap disease of course. Can you fix it?
Anything can be usually be fixed. Just look at this camera for example. I fixed this one didn't I?
The problem is the cost of doing so would be prohibitive.
12voltvids how much would a repair like this cost?
@@networkgames1000
More than the camera is worth.
12voltvids I’m willing to pay that. Just want it fixed and you seem like the expert. If your interested in repairing it let me know I’m willing to pay whatever it costs.
I use Aceton to anti glue that sticky surfaces.
I own two of 'em, and two more models with IR-night vision feature. 100% Fuji tapes. lol
Yep, quite a technical marvel at the time.
Perhaps I will do a video and show off my collection of camcorders.
I have quite a few that people have given me.
They sell these old cameras in the second hand shops in the UK for £10
They sell straight away .
We dont see many tapes around for them .
These cameras sit around for years
Of course they sell right away. Someone had home videos they want to transfer and no equipment to do it. Their old camera broke and they can't get it fixed so they go looking for another to play their tapes. Will likely sell this one now that it works.
@@12voltvids they are in demand .
Its the new ones that sit there for ever with dead batteries just like the new phones .
every one of then have a dead battery .
They say they are all tested , yeah right .
It can take up to 3-4 hours to start the battery up .
Some are dead on arrival , you can guess the rest .
As well as some pisst off costumers in the shop .
Yep the UK is one pisst off country
My Sony GV-500 video walkman has the same tape mech.
You sure about that. Must of those used the b mech which has the full size drum. It might appear similar but this chassis was typically only on the really small 8mm cameras.
@@12voltvids yes the drum looks the same but the rest is different. Mine loads forward.
Just replacing the 25 caps on a spare GV500 from Japan that has sound but no video so I hope its just the caps.
Sticky "rubberized coatings" - I treated some of my gear with Armor-All back in the day (when they were new) and they have survived quite well. My brother's stuff (untreated) became sticky and yucky. I doubt there is much that came be done to those now. Nothing I tried on them seemed to work. If one buys one off eBay, etc. they can expect it to be yuck!
Alcohol will remove it.
@@12voltvids Didn't work for me but maybe the things I had were a different compound. Nikon stuff.
@@RuneTheFirst I cleaned it off a teac portable dat. Left the plastic shiny black when done.
I got shiter version with buttons under the viewer lol
8mm tape classic lol I'm sure there used to be a VHS converter put tape in middle it
I think you mean the VTR (Video Tape Recorder) Sony Handycams (8mm/Video8/Hi8) and JVC VideoMovies (VHS-C) both have certain models that have that feature.
For the Handycams they came in from the late 80s/early 90s once they figured out how JVC VideoMovie had done it. From what I believe and researched, I honestly prefer the 8mm/VHS-C Camcorders that can do VTR, instead of the Player mode. :) It just makes the camcorder a VCR combo. :P
Looking at eBay, I'd say you could sell it for $20-40 but theres a couple oddballs over $200.
Cool I would be thrilled with 200 for it. I'll get it on eBay right away.
@@12voltvids Most I saw were $10-50. Only 2 crazy auctions had them over $200. They would have to be mint, sealed, in the box.
@@gbowne1 you would be surprised what working beta decks go for. YES YOU REPAIR THIS CAMERA BEFORE.. THE PROBLEM WITH NO PICTURE YOU REPLACING THE BAD CAPACITOR
I frankly disagree with the idea that these cams are totally useless and worthless except for archiving old tapes. I collect these old machines and find them very fun to use! Analog video has a very "cozy" quality that modern HD digital formats cannot replicate!
I spent 47 years looking at the world through fuzzy eyes. 3 grand later and 2 minutes staring at a laser beam, I can see clearly, and those old analog cameras bring back bad memories. HD and UHD all the way for me.
