As many others have said... DUDE! YOU ABSOLUTELY ROCK! December 2020, and this video saved the day. I searched for C:31:22, and boom, you have the perfect video. Took me all of 10 minutes to find the little black roller stuck at the bottom (which I wouldn't have known was down there) and put it back on that post with some needlenose pliers. The Internet delivers something positive for a change. I hope this random comment finds you well, and thank you for spreading some good.
You literally made my entire family's day. Thank you soooo much. We were convinced that we would never be able to retrieve our old memories. I can't tell you how grateful we are. Best day ever. Wishing you all the best things in life!
2023 and your Video helped me revived my uncles sony camcorder, I said yes I will fix it, but deeply knew it was going to be a challange since its been a while i do electronics repair, I looked up on YT for a sticking tape no playback and WHOALA, your video was my first option and i have to say Thank you very much, the black piece was loose inside, i wiggled it facing down and it came out, put it back into its place and now the camera is working like new. Thanks again.
Wow, I am very impressed!! My camera stopped working correctly and was showing the error code which you described. I watched your video, discovered that my roller was missing as you described. I got a flashlight and saw the roller stuck way down in the bottom of the camera. I nudged it out with a long skinny screw driver, installed the roller back where it belonged wit a pair of hemostat pliers and, good as new!!! Thanks a million!!!
YOU ARE MY HERO! With this video, you just saved years of memories of my little children! Now they are in their 20th and during these quarantine time, we wanted to refresh our beautiful memories! Thank you!
it's supposed to have a little plastic stopper that goes in between the roller and the pin but if it doesnt have it you'll have to either get something like it or deal with the roller falling off every so often.
I have more than 100 tapes that I recorded few years ago with my Sony DCR-HC40. This week decided to start transferring them to my computer and then it happened, error c 21 23. I saw that a part fell out of the camera exactly like the one you showed. I had no clue how to fix it. THANKS TO YOU I'm now back with my project to save my family memories to my hard drive. Geovanny THANK YOU SO MUCH for sharing this video!!! All the best!
Today I dropped my camera and got c:31:22 code if I would not watch your video I could break the camera. Thanks for your tip, I did what you said - put the camera upside down, found that rubber thing and put it back, it's so simple as that but nobody except you gave this advice. Thank you very much. Spasibo! My camera works again.
Same as estebanko here! YOU SAVED ME A LOT OF HEARTACHE!!! Finally converging all of my videos to digital...camcorder was locked up..this piece was laying in the bottom exactly where you showed the playing head...put it back where it belonged, and I'm in business! THANK YOU , THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!
It's 2020 and this video just saved my camera! My TRV240 broke about 10yrs ago and I bought a TRV250 to transfer my tapes with (but it's not as good of a camera as the 240). I watched your video today and pulled the pinch roller out of the 250 and stuck it in the 240 and it worked. Saved my camera. Thanks so much for the video!
This is awesome. I almost about to throw my video camera away. so much worried how to digitize the cassettes that I recorded over 20 years. You are truly a life saver. Thanks a lot
I have been converting my family tapes to digital and my camcorder just stopped working. My problem was exactly as you described and the solution was exactly as you said! Thank you so much for posting this video!
I can't believe I stumbled upon this clip in 2022 to fix my cam with the same error. I was in tears when I found this problem.... Anyways long story short you HELP ME FIXED it!!! Ty!!
Thanks a million! I got out an old camera to convert some old video tapes and got this exact error. Found this video and found the little rubber piece down inside the camera and now I'm saving precious family memories!!
You’re the best! Thanks for posting this. At first I thought “not my problem”. Then I looked around on the floor and found the misplaced roller!! I never would have known.
Who knew that lil black piece could be lost in the mechanism, freaking crazy, whilst you were explaining I was thinking “ wow this guy, where does he expect me to get this missing component. It’s been right there all along God bless u bro
Awesome!!! You really helped me out!!! I just bought this camera used and so glad I found this video. I tipped my camera upside down and sure enough that piece fell out after shaking it a little bit. Thank you soooo much!!!
You the man!! Same thing happened to my Sony handycam, and I didn't begin to know where the hell that little black roller went? Thanks to you and your video you saved the camera from the garbage. Much thanks! 🙏
This helped so much more than any other video I’ve seen on this code, thank you so much, finished watching the vid and sure enough that’s what happened, ‘preciate it
I have a Sony MiniDV Camcorder, the internals were a bit different but I figured out where the roller went and your fix worked perfectly. Thanks SO much, I'm so grateful!!!
Excellent post ! thank you for help saving our old videos. Like you said the pinch roller has fell out and after placing it back, its working like new. Thank you !
thanks homie, was gonna look on marketplace for a replacement camera! now I can look at old movies of the Family and my late wife, can't thank you enough brother.
I was thinking "there is no way I grab my camera and that thing bounces out." Pick up camer, shake, well I'll be - out it bounces onto the carpet. Works great now! Thanks man!
Man thanks for this video! I have this same camera and had it sitting in my closet for years now because it stop working with the same problem. Now it does 👊🏾👊🏾
OMG!! Thank you brother!! Life saver!! It works.. oh man now I can watch good memories!! So grateful right now . Thank GOD for RUclips!! I’m like laughing of joy
Ah thanks so much - been trying to retrieve old videos of family trip to Disney 10 years ago - found my little black roller in the tape deck and put back on - sorted!!!
Yeah, if I remember right, Sony cheaped out on the later tape mechanisms, especially on the pinch rollers. The mounting tube will sometimes come off (but sometimes, like with yours, just the roller will fall off). Generally it's best to remove what was there and use something like the end of a pen's ink tube as a replacement mount, but it mostly depends on the severity of the situation. I had exactly the same thing happen to my TRV27 MiniDV tape camera and the end of an ink pen made the roller stay in place. Records and plays just fine now.
Great bud, cams been shelved 15 years. decided to hook to pc transfer tapes, Been smacking it all morning, found this,, Thank you again its working ,,2 more to go
Thanks, great video, but how do get that roller/spool to stay on? Did you have to press down on the roller until it clicked in place? Or it just free-falled into that stainless steel prong? I was thinking of even try to super glue it, but was scared to do so.
Thank you thank you soooooo much... It's exactly what happened to my camera and now it's fixed.. I have a lot of beautiful memories in my videos... Again THANK YOU Soooo much..
You found the cure! Thanks very much!!! But what made the roller fall out in the first place? Does it need some kind of retainer to keep it from happening again? (also, what about using a wooden skewer as a pointer?)
Exactly the fix I needed for my camera - Thanks so much!!! Mine is a Sony DCR-TRV140 Digital 8, so it's not limited to just the one in the video, but the fix is exactly the same (including shaking out the roller after removing the cassette). I had no idea there was even a loose part in there until watching the video.
Just an additional check, this happened in my case: If this error only occours for one casette, check if your tape is not torn. It will give the same errors for this.
What about the metal parts right next to that missing piece. I had that problem but the two little metal poles on the left of it also came off of the inside of the camera. Do u know how to fix that by any chance?
Hi my camcorder is a bit different from yours but I tipped it upside down and this little wide tube a bit like the black one in your video but smaller cane out and I don’t know where to put it in ??
Does anyone know what size of a roller tape that is to buy. I have lost mine for that specific camera. Want to order the piece but don’t know the mm in size. Or does anyone have a link to purchase please
It's Jan 2020 & your this video helped me fix my camcorder, I couldn't see the roller first, but flipped the camcorder upside down & it came out, it was somewhere in there.. Thank you
Thanks a lot! After some hitting and shaking, my black pinch roller came out. I placed it back on and although it sits in there very loosely, the camera works great again! Now, how do we secure it and keep it from coming off?
Tom Somers I’m not too sure but I know something gotta go on the end of it to secure it ... like how the one next to it has a white thing on the end of it I’m guessing it’s something like it.
it worked for a couple minutes until the pinch roller fell off again, so just put back the black pinch roller on the pin, and then add a small plastic peace on top (very similar as from a pen) and it will hold the black pinch roller in its place and it's not gonna come off even when shaking the cam
Ok, so question.... Everyone has the same problem and from the comments it fixes everyones camera... Not one person doesnt have the roller???? What if you do not have the roller? I have searched for one and cant find... please help
Hey bro I know this is a late comment but I wonder if you can help. I can close my tape recorder if there’s no tape. And it was working fine before but now it’s not closing when I put the tape back in. I have trv608
Ahm.. This vid was a very big help. But regarding that rubber tube thing, it's still attached to the pin right inside where it should be. But I keep getting all these C:31:22 error going on and pisses me off. 2016 and I'm still using the camcorder. Well I had it long ago but since the error occurred, I had to set it aside.
I wouldn't know exactly what could be the reason why its still giving you the code error, i would suggest trying to take it off and just re adjust it maybe that might work.
Thanks, this fixed my camera too. The black roll had fallen into the cassette compartment. I shook the camera slightly and the roll was in my hand. Then i put it on the pen and evrything works fine. Thanks.
Same here. Just bought a TRV230 today for US$40 and was having the same problem. Get solve with minutes after watch this video. Best video to save my day.

I'm having this problem but the rubber thing is still in place. It's only happening to one of my tapes in particular when I'm trying to rewind it, help me 😩At first it was playing but luckily the tape was towards the beginning already when I put it in but when I try saving it from OBS, it didn't save for some reason.... and now I'm trying to rewind it back the whole tape, now it won't let me..
Need help, I put a new roller in my camcorder and now when I put a tape in it gets stuck half way down then pops back out. Any ideas why this will happen?
Wow you have no idea, I was trying to recover some old videos and on my 3rd tape the tape pulled out and was wadded up so i pulled it out of the camera onto the floor then scooped it into a trash can with VHS tape parts and other junk, Well the camera wouldn't work so 2 days later i find your video and my camera is a bit different format but similar. So out to the trash can to retrieve the bag. I am sorting through a lot of small parts from the VHS tapes and other miscellaneous junk and i I had 4 semi crushed 9mm shell casings from reloading and was about to discard them and one of them had something inside of it that caught my eye. No way..... yep that was the roller. Thanks to you it actually works again.
thank you man, i have a similar camera with the same error, checked it and the problem is another post chrome thing on the left side that's missing. Didn't noticed, thank you!
