    Awesome! Who would normally take the time to try and fix something like this? When you opened up the camcorder, I was thinking "where do you even BEGIN to look?" Here is was just a capacitor. Now it works again!

    Awesome. I have a Sony GV-8 8mm Video Walkman and there is no picture when playing nor when you plug something in the AV input and output it to the TV. It suffers from bad capacitors. I also just got a nice Canon 8mm camcorder from 1997 and it is fully working, there is a color LCD screen in the viewfinder.

    I love working on this stuff. I have a little hobby electronics bench where I play around and sometimes miraculously fix broken stuff. My question is how do you not lose your temper when it becomes so fiddly and it takes longer than what feels reasonable to do a diagnosis/ repair? I commend you for being so good-natured and patient.

    Thanks for this great tutorial, will undoubtedly be very helpful. I have this exact model with similar problems, I'm hoping to attempt the undoubtedly economically sound task of recapping it and bringing it back to 100% usability - would love to have a super small yet S-Video & stereo capable analog unit.

    Great video! I had a Ricoh R-88H (the equivalent to the sony CCD-TR81 with a different brand name) that I repaired a while back with the same viewfinder problem, but a little later it totally crapped out due to other bad capacitors. I hate these cheap crappy capacitors that Sony used!

    Fantastic vid! I've had this same camcorder since new. It went back in the early 2000's for about the same reason. They replaced electrolytic caps too....about 4 of them sent back in a baggie. Camcorder still works like it did new. I'd sure like to see a PROPER way to periodically clean one of these?

    Brilliant video! I've got an old 71 - stuck 'zoomed in' but I can hear the motors trying to actuate, so I'm guessing the mechanism is jammed inside. It's also just eaten one of my tapes and is now refusing to eject it... Should keep me busy this weekend :/ Thanks for the great video.

    Apparently bad surface mount electrolytics was a problem with _all_ Sony video gear from the time surface mount started through the end of the 90s. There used to be a repair shop in LA exclusively dedicated to replacing them on high end VTRs and cameras, for a much more reasonable price than what Sony USA wanted. I read about them on a webpage years ago but lost the link.

      When I worked in the business I spent many long boring days replacing bad caps. First all the SL 5000 series betamax aluminum capacitors (replaced with tantalum) in the servo circuits. Then the surface mount caps hit. I fixed hundreds of 8mm and hi-8 camcorders.
      Back then a Hi-8 cameras were big bucks, and people would spend a few hundred fixing them .

Hmmm what do you think it might be. Also, should I get a newer Video 8/Hi 8 player that might be better for quality when I am trying to digitize all my tapes? Thanks for all your help, Will

Recording this morning (test) has a stabile clear view including in and out zooming, but playback is the same. Any ideas? Battery is damaged and working with AC adapter, which done over the years. Could the power supply be the problem?

    Hey there, great vid. Just picked one of these up at a garage sale to try and capture some old tapes. Unit played with a dirty head, so cleaned it with a bit of alcohol. Picture cleared up and played nicely, but by time I got the capture equipment out, it will only play static. It can rewind, ff, and play, but no picture is coming thru. It does sound like it struggles a bit to load the tapes, and sometimes will stop and flash the eject button. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

      +12voltvids all my camcorder needs is new capacitors I think they sell them

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  8 лет назад

      The problem with the leaking capacitors is there is an extremely good chance that the electrolytic that has leaked out has damaged the traces on the multi layer board. The reason they leaked in the first place was bad chemistry in the electrolytic. When they were stored discharged the electrolytic became slightly base (caustic) and stared to eat the copper in the leads resulting in a gap between the leads and the rubber plug. Then the corrosive electrolytic leaked onto the board where is starts to eat the copper traces. I have had too many cameras where someone said, just a simple capacitor job, and once getting into it finding the board was also damaged. These cameras use a multi layer board, usually 6 layers. When the corrosive liquid gets between the layers and eats copper, you are SOL. So I don't do cameras anymore. Cameras were one the reason I got out of the business, as they were the biggest headaches. There is a reason manufactures don't fix them. Even new ones. If they break under warranty they replace them, and toss the broken unit,

    Wrong - CCD-TR71 is the smallest 8mm camcorder model

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  5 лет назад

      The TR71 and 81 used the same mechanism, and are very close in size. The 81 however had a better sensor. The 81 had a manual focus ring on the lens as opposed to a small dial, which made it far easier to operate.

    Hi 12voltvids can you please look at this video and tell me if the distortion could be caused by a bad cap? ruclips.net/video/mQK19vA_i9A/видео.html
    I came across this Hi8 Sony Camcoder model CCD-TRV67E the listing said the video playback is noisy probably needs its head cleaned. I tried to clean the head but it did not help. I took the camera apart and only found four capacitors inside wich surprised me I expected a lot more of them. All of them look good no leaks. I tried to bridge them with a bigger cap while the playback was running but without any changes. Maybe I just did not break trough the coating idk I was very careful not to touch anything else with the cap terminals. Since there are only four caps on the video-board it is not a problem to replace them all I just want to be a little bit more sure that its a cap problem. I only have a multimeter so I cant test them in circuit. THANK YOU VERY MUCH and thank you for you videos you have earned a new subscriber.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  2 года назад

      Looks like sample and hold cap in the capstan servo. The modern cameras used mostly tantalum or other solid caps. Those newer ones only have a few electrolytics.
      Could also be a dead head. These units use auto track finding and record tracking signals on the tape that are used for the auto track finding. If one of the heads signal is low it can hunt like on the sample video.
