  • In this video, I answer a question that I get asked a lot lately: Why is it so hard to find a good jazz guitar? Well, there is no easy answer to this question and there are several factors leading to the problem. For one, the best brands are having a hard time keeping them in stock. I explain a lot more in the video but I would love to know your thoughts on the topic. Have you had a hard time finding a good archtop? Let me know your thoughts or experiences recently! Thanks for watching!!

I recently bought a 1997 ES-175 from Rich. Really love it. I would definitely recommend buying a guitar from Rich. He' great to deal with, knows how to clean them up really nice and does a great job setting them up.Mine plays like butter. Also knows how to pack them for shipping very well.

    Hi Rich Stevenson,
My love for jazz guitar sounds and feels has touched my soul since I was 5 years of age.
I started playing I was 11 taking lessons and living in garage bands.
Then I worked with local big bands in my area which is fine and good but as you know, guitar charts are mainly cords and very few single line reading so I would freeze up when my time came.
I felt I was a decent player, employable for casuals and alike however, I developed bad habits.
I've subscribed to your channel as a means to relearn the instrument not necessarily from the beginning but, the proper habits of reading, chord melody and improvisation for my own enjoyment.
"Please give me all you got"
    Sincerely yours,
    "Hank Hughes on Guitar"

So glad I recently acquired a 2002 Heritage 575 in nearly perfect condition. I bought it online from Jay Wolfe's store for $3750. It's solid Sitka spruce top and solid mahogany back, sides and neck--and a has single Rendall Wall pickup. I saw similar guitars for around $5000. It's my first and only archtop, and I think I did very well to get it, especially in today's market.

As a lefty, their are additional challenges due to availability and wiring. Most wiring harnesses use pots that are for right handed guitars and the tone knob is basically useless. Beside the sound of an individual guitar, I find that the neck is super important for how the guitar feels. Not all C type necks are the same and then there's D and slim D necks - which adds to the challenge. Most on-line sellers don't offer evaluation time periods even for $5,000 used guitars. That's kind of crazy when you talk about purchasing a musical instrument without a chance to play it.

Needs a setup, but is bringing out the jazz in me! Played a 1950/51 175 the other day and could learn to love it.

Hi Rich. Just found your channel and am loving it. Read your bio and I especially appreciate what you're doing in the church. I'm an intermediate player, at best, but really want to improve and am considering enrolling in your program. In the meantime, I'm looking for a new jazz guitar (I foolishly sold an Eastman AR803 last year) but I'm torn between a full-hollow and semi-hollow and would love to hear your perspectives. Do you have a video that specifically addresses that? Unfortunately, I live in an area where there is only a Guitar Center and one small shop that only carries PRS, so I can't just go out and check out a lot of instruments. Finally, after tone, one of my top criteria is that the guitar be easy to play. I'm 66 and I find I just don't have the hand strength or "meat on the bones" to barre like I once did. Again, appreciate your videos and would appreciate any thoughts or advice. Take care.

An excellent lower/value priced jazz box is the Epiphone Emperor Regent reissue. Find one with the serial number starting with R, which denotes that it was made in the Peerless Korean factory. The Peerless factory is reputed to be where the finest production guitars are made in SE Asia - the best guitar factory in SE Asia. Peerless-made guitars, whether they be Epi's or other brands made in that factory, are gaining reputation. I have a 1996 and love it. There are some jazz box comparison videos on YT with blind tests that pick it as one of the winners (best sounding) among other arch top electrics that are much more expensive.

Timely subject! For a month I've been thinking of this night and day. This weekend I'm going to a large guitar store, not Guitar Center, to see and hear the Eastman 403 and T486.The main reasons I want to try the 486 are it's thin and has split parallelogram markers. I hope I can get a mellow sound out of it. The single pick up Eastman in the video has a beautiful finish;I'm ready to break away from sunburst.

In my humble opinion it doesn't have to be a struggle at all. Fit and Finish is objective. You can see it with your eyes and feel it with your hands. On the other hand Playability is subjective. Some prefer a lower action, some prefer a little higher action. Then theirs shorter or longer scale lengths. Tone on the other hand is very subjective. It helps to know what your looking for as much as possible. The good news is you dont have to spend $5000 or more for a good Semi Hollow or Hollow Body Guitar. You can find a great one for $1000 to $3000. Sometimes even less. Its trial and error. Some Guitars have the Mojo and some dont. Between Guitars n Jazz in New Jersey, Gruhn's in Nashville, Normans in California and Reverb you can find what you're looking for. Great video as always Rich.

Interesting I teach guitar in a music store with a load of amazing eastmans ( in north east wales ) the John Pisano signature is probably one of the best guitars I’ve ever tried. I remember trying a host of heritage guitars and George benson signatures and a hoffner jazzica but what blew them away was a d’angelico semi hollow ( Korean ) the vintage guitars have a sound but a lot of the time they re set up badly so feel un playable in comparison to more modern jazzers

Yeah, prices and availability are definitely out of whack, but it's that way for a bunch of things. Blame it on the pandemic, the supply chain, Trump's clumsy trade war with China, etc. The prices of anything with a Gibson, Martin, or other mainline US company logo on the peghead have gotten ridiculous, which is why most of my professional-grade instruments I gig with are Asian-made. I simply cannot afford a quality American-made archtop guitar at this time, and I'm an educated professional. I appreciate Rich's perspective, his experience, and his questions which are completely spot-on. Thank you for this video and all you do.

I ve been checking online shops and guitars for years and one thing is for sure.
Since the corona impact markets are confused. I ve never seen so many models or brands out of stock. I compared the online shops in different countries. It is/was the same everywhere.
On the other hand you have some brands that flood the market. Some brands had special offers between 20 and 50 percent off.
My theory is that some factories in Asia were closed completley or work staff went part time. While others stayed open and maybe overworked their b stock guitars or worked overtime shifts.
If the Chinese goverment says harbour closed harbour is closed. Same with factories.
When I ordered guitars it was interesting to see that in the webshops there were many times just 1, 2 or 3 guitars from one model. When I got them I had to send some back due to quality issues. My theory is that factories put out b stock material in a bigger amount.
Jazzboxes are a niche product. Can one say that? It s less for a mass production market. And it takes longer to make them. If I had only some workers left I would do more solids since they are easier to build and the companies make more money selling them.
Maybe thats why it takes longer to find a JazzBox now. Just a theory.
Someone has inside experience in the field?

I loved the L4 but decided to save $2000 and get the ES175. It's a great guitar and I love playing it, and it has increased a bit in value, but not like the L4. They are now $10-12,000 and up, and now way out of my range. Should have spent that extra $2000!

Why things go up in price? Here is the answer in a nutshell. The M1 money supply is all cash, coins, traveler's checks. In otherwords the very liquid assets which are used as a medium of exchange in our country. Since 2009 and continuing every year since then the Govt just prints an amount equal to 9% of this M1 money supply and just spends it. For every $1.00 in 2009 there is now approx $2.40. Thgerefore people put a higher value on physical assets like a 1940 D'Angelico or a '70 Chevelle or a Section of good cental Illinois farmland. Wages have gone up so companies need more for their guitars to pay their luthiers.

So-called vintage guitars were once simply called secondhand guitars - because that's what they are. A good used instrument could invariably be bought for less money than a new one, and if it bore the scars of the years, it didn't matter - the price reflected this.
Nowadays, lots of scruffy and overpriced guitars which often need work such as a neck reset to put them right are touted on eBay and by unscrupulous dealers as 'vintage'. The price is usually higher than a new instrument - yet an old guitar isn't necessarily going to sound better than a new one. A ridiculous state of affairs.
Another issue is the price of archtops made from solid wood. In these days of CNC machining, why are archtops so pricey compared with flat tops (Chinese-made guitars excepted)?

In my opinión you are taking lots of risks, main one that you might no like what you bought, buying without trying even from reputable companies.
So the problem for me is not the price but not being able to try.
I think thats been solved alredy as most companies offer the posibilitty of returning if you are no convinced with what you bought. Ok, you have to pay for shipping and returning costs but considering the price of archtops and the luxury of trying them at your ease at home i think is a well invested money..
By the way, i am of the opinión that if sellers offered free returns what they spent in shipping costs would be greatly covered with what they would earn with the increase on sales.
    Sorry for the long reply.

Respectfully, it is in your heart and in your hands. There are great Tele Jazz guitarists. You know the names. How much different will you sound playing a lower priced archtop that is set up well and run thru a decent amp? We listen with our ears and not our eyes. How much difference does an Asian copy sound versus an American Archtop? What do your ears tell you? Spend more time practicing and less time buying. Disclaimer, I am guilty as well. Shally

It’s not just guitars that have gone up in price. Asset prices have increased due to central bank monetary policy. Creating money from nothing leads to inflation.

Yep! Everything is going up. Gas in California is almost 5 bucks a gallon where I live! Thanks for watching!

Let me Say this, as far as guitars are concerned DON'T BUY AT THESE INFLATED PRICES! if people stop buying, the prices will come down. The other shortages are being created by the governments inability to get the ships unloaded, that's so they can raise the prices. I'll bet Trump can get the ships unloaded.
