- In this highly requested video, I fly the Gulfstream with Brad from Van Nuys (KVNY) to San Jose (KSJC) and discuss some of the secrets to being a successful contract pilot. As always, the departure out of Van Nuys is a hectic one (I also cut out the 30 minutes we had to wait our turn to depart). I hope some of you who are thinking about taking the leap from your full time job to contract find this video helpful. I’ve already filmed another video talking about both Brad and I’s personal experience of becoming full time contractors so be on the lookout for that. Note that we do not discuss ways to time build in this video. I will talk about how I built my flight time to become a Gulfstream driver in a future vlog.

PLEASE NOTE: These videos are for entertainment purposes only. All of my videos, including this one, have been significantly edited down from the original full length raw footage. Many radio calls, checklist steps, and other procedures have been omitted to keep the videos a reasonable viewing length.
Please speak to a CFI (like Brad) with any flying questions you may have, do not use this video as instruction.
That other guy sounds like he's done it 100,000 times before and is still making sure to do it right every time. Just wow.
Wow, another outstanding video. I don't know where the time goes. That was the quickest 25 minutes I have experienced all week. You and Brad really click together in the front office. So much valuable information to be a successful contract pilot like yourself, and Brad. Love the radio chatter as always, and I thank you once again for not double timing the audio, lol I hate that.
Have a wonderful day.
Thanks so much for watching! Yes Brad is a great colleague to have up there for sure.
what does 'double timing' the audio mean?
You guys make a great team. If you're not on the same page things can go south real quick. Keep doing that pilot stuff. 🫡🙂
@@KuostA double timing the audio means, when you put the video on fast-forward and all the voices sound like Donald Duck. Very hard to keep up with a conversation. It has become a fad lately and sometimes it can be very irritating.
Owen, you’re just the epitome of a class act. What client wouldn’t want you to keep them safe in the air. Cheers!
Great video, looks like you and Brad practice excellent CRM as well as just have a chill, fun dynamic. Thanks for the good info about becoming a contract pilot, I suspect it's gonna be a huge help to some folks with that dream.
Love your videos Owen thanks again for giving back to the community we always enjoy flying with you!
Great “how-to” video Owen! You and Brad, super CRM, thanks for taking me along in this timeless beauty…the G-IV!
Both my boys are in flight school in Myrtle Beach, I sent this video to them. I had just been talking with them about doing something like this a few years down the road after getting more experience.. very informative, great vid!!!
Good info, and having a coworker you actually like and enjoy being around makes for good teamwork!
Taking the commercial checkride next week. Your vids are so inspiring. A long way to go but videos like these keep me motivated. See you in the skies friend!
Congrats, man! That's a lot of work. Keep rockin'!!
I follow a few of you guys. I like the common theme: opportunity, continuous improvement. Just great and practical.
The refresh rate of your gauge screens really looks crazy with the frame rate of the video!
Those old CRT screens tend to do that!
Its more a thing with the shutter speed
Perfect video! Informative, fun, professional and flying! Love it!
Hey Owen, try changing the video's capture rate settings from 30 fps up to 120 or maybe even 240 depending on what gopro you are using. That should get rid of the screen flickering or strobing for the displays.
I’ll give it a shot, those old CRT screens are a nightmare.
Finally a video we can use to chair fly with. Super clean and constantly flowing. Nice.
As always, amazing content. Love these videos, can't get enough of them.
I appreciate it!
Such an awesome video as always! I fly out of Van nuys, just got my PPL about two weeks ago! Keep killing it!
Runway 16 L and 34 R has a crazy long displaced threshold!
Thank you for the video. I am just stepping foot into the contract pilot life flying the Citation XL.
Great to see Owen in the driver’s seat. He has surly put in his time. Earned his way to the top podium.
Awesome video, Im planning to become a contract pilot in a year, so this was great info for me. Helps point in the right direction🎉
23:30 - Grease cleanup on aisle 30 on the left...
Awesome and informative video.
Very informative thanks for sharing 🙏🏾looking forward to hearing how you got a full time gig with zero time and type experience. Keep up the work
You will enjoy that episode for sure
Nice one Owen, thanks for taking us along 🤙
I think this would be the coolest lifestyle.
You can make alot of money witch makes having a personal lifestyle awesome but nothing beats working for yourself while doing something you love.
I've never flown before but private contractor is the route I'd go.
Great content. Love watching videos like this, specially with guys who are very motivational. You make it easy to see the big picture. When your new and have no idea what to do or where to start. You can watch videos like yours and see where the end goal is witch makes taking that major first step alot easier!
Thanks for the insight Owen. If I was younger, would definitely pursue this as a career. Unfortunately old and retired now! Great content as usual.
This was a great video, I am an experienced 51 year old Instructor flying mostly single engines, and I was thinking about flying some bigger stuff while I am still "young" enough. I don't really want to get locked into a "full time" situation, but the contract flying might just be the thing for me. Thanks for this video!
Awesome flight and vid, much appreciated!
Great content Owen. I’m not a pilot but just love aviation. Please keep them coming.
Thanks for watching!
Great video of you professional execution of being Corporate Pilots. Thank you guys for illustrating “how it’s done.”
I really like that 3 way split screen at the end of the video.
Very enjoyable. Great flight. Great chit, chat, love it.
YES!!!! THANK GOD PREFLIGHT AND CHECKLISTS I LOVE IT!!!
Awesome video Owen always love watching your videos you inspire me to quit my job and switch to pilot training full time! Hoping to run into you one day at KVNY that’s where I do my training. It’s awesome to hear my tail number on the video! Keep doing what you are doing thank you !!
Awesome!! Keep it up!
that's what I'm doing right now too! how old are u and what did u do prior?
Hi bro , nice video very illustrative and always learn something from you
Thank you!
Great views on the tri-split screens today Owen!
Thank you!
Enjoy your video like always, and you always give out great information as well. I just hope I will be able to hire you one day to fly me somewhere I want to go that is more of my dreams. Enjoy the skies.
Nice Triple 8's in the house! Awesome vid. Thank ya!
Another awesome video🙏🏼
Thank you 🙌
Love your channel! It’s my dream to be a pilot like you one day.
this is an absolutely amazing video. So detailed.
Thank you very much
Awesome video! We need more; more frequently... if your able that is. Im sure your busy
Thanks for joining us today Brad!
Great Work! Love your videos :)
Thanks a lot!
Owen love your videos - wow you’re in first seat today!
Thank you! Yes indeed!
I dont think there is a better duo in contract aviation today. 🔥
That landing was BUTTER!!!
That landing was smooth. Nice
Great video. I spent some time at KVNY last Sept and shot some footage for a video about the CL415 Water bombers, that were there (gotta edit that soon). Great experience being on thee field!
I'm just finishing up my own command instrument rating. I'd love to fly corporate one day. Making kids videos is extremely fun and rewarding, but not paying the bills 💸😃
These 2 are next level
I am new here. Love your videos. Would love a video more in depth video on how you got here. What certs you got and etc. Great content.
Thank you for sharing life in the corporate business jet Aviation. Nice!!😊
Thanks for watching!
@@FlyWithOwen You are welcome. Be safe.
You need to do a deeper dive where you tell everyone how to achieve the type ratings as an independent. You’re probably going to have to pay for your own type rating (unless you leave a previous job that paid for a type) and then your own recurrent training and then also be sure to file your taxes properly at the end of the year because you’re independent contractor. All super important things to realize before trying to get into this kind of thing.
Do you get KCM as a full time contract pilot? I would assume so just never had to think about that since I’ve always been able to do it on the side and my full time gig pays for recurring and takes care of KCM and stuff.
Always a good video. Nice landing.
In a future video Brad and I explain how we came to have our types. Stay tuned
I also wondered how recurrent training goes. Sounds like it’s out of your pocket based on a comment in this video: ruclips.net/video/ffGOsZP3f0k/видео.htmlsi=zIrMcfWkBgzusD1r
Owen you need to get with Citation Max and find out what settings he uses for his cameras to keep the displays from flickering so bad!!
You guys are living every pilots dream. But, most people do not have a clue how brutally is to get there. Congrats Gents.
If you want it bad enough God will have it ready for you, but you also gotta work and move. Sure it can take time to get it but it’s gonna be rewarding to compensate for the time
Hey Owen, thanks for the great info! You seem to fly out of Van Nuys a lot.
I’m wondering:
Are there certain airports / areas of the country that are best to operate out of for contract pilot business?
This makes me wish I had gone to CA. in the 80's. I was fresh out of the Air Force(not as a pilot) and had been in pilot training before and during my military time. I really think now that people in California would've been more helpful than where I was at that time in helping me make it as a pilot. California was ahead of most of the country back in those years and it seems like you could get more training time in with the good weather in Southern California. All of this is a moot point now 40 years later, but I wish we could go back in time and make changes in our lives so we could live our dreams instead of sitting around thinking about what could've been. I would be ready to retire in a few years or maybe I could be retired right now, just missed out on a lot of adventures not going when I could have.
That landing was crisp
1. How do You decide who is PIC/SIC and who pilot flying/monitoring. (when both pilots can be PIC of course)
2. Did PIC is always on left seat?
3. Are you pilot flying, when seating on right seat? (and how often).
4. Is a difference in pay for PIC/SIC? (when both pilots are qualified for PIC)
Great flight . . great landing . . but I didn't have any doubts.
Thank you!
Good information Thumbs up 👍
Thanks for watching
Any advice on making connections in the industry as a PPL, is just sitting at the FBO enough? Also is there any chance a PPL could look around one of these planes or even get right seat during a flight? Love the vids & TIA!
Try getting a job working line service. Great way to network.
Thanks for yet another interesting video! How does it work flying multi crew with different contract pilots for different owners and operators. Is the checklists and callouts different from operator to operator, or is it standard for the type of aircraft? How much preparation and studying is required before you show up for work?
They are standard across all aircraft. Hardly any paperwork before the flight. Most of it is done electronically, filling flight plan, etc
Jets don't age much on the outside but they do on the inside. Is new carpet super expensive? I think it would benefit a lot from new crisp black for instance. Maybe new seats. Some of Embraer's 2024 white interiors are pretty snazzy.
@FlyWithOwen when is your next time visiting Fresno (KFAT) I’m a 17 year old private pilot and, I know you emphasize working at line services and stuff but everything around me is 18 or older requirement. I would really love to meet you one day!
Hope to be able to hire you soon!
Flawless!
Except: "Fly with Brad and ME," not "...and I" and "and my" not "I's." The way to remember is to take the other person out of the sentence. Would you say "Join I?"
Thought you might like to know.
Very nice!
Here's my question?
How old is to old to get started doing this?
I'm almost 60 and wish I would have gotten into this when I was younger.
Appreciate the content.
Do you think there's plenty of contract work and growth for a healthy career going forward? I am in tech and considering changing careers. I am not sure how many years it would take before I would be making decent money again. Your office definitely has a beautiful view. Love the videos
i don’t fly but was in tech for way too long. getting out of that BS industry was one of my smarter moves. good luck to your future endeavors.
@@user-fn9nq9wk6l what do you do now or were you able to retire from it?
Yes, you just have to know where to look. Best of luck
Nice flying
More videos please 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Owen, love your videos, how many total hours have you accumulated?
Pretty incredible how Airbus makes all those checks obsolete. Crazy workload.
1:28 that’s N51467 part of my flight school 😂
mans trying to eat the mic it bothers me lol, but fun video stumbled on your channel and found it interesting. flying has always interested me.
Agree with prior post. Your aviation content is great. Focus on that and forget talking about how much you make.
so very cool!!!! 1 day baby!!! currently 80% on ppl 😅
Keep it up!
Hell yeah let’s get to work baby
Let’s get it!
Owen, do you have to conduct safety briefings for the passengers just like in the airlines?
I will be a corporate pilot, I refuse to not achieve this dream. Great video as usual Owen, keep inspiring!
Chase your dreams.
@@jayden_frichette Thank you brother!
Beautiful machines.
Agree
I hope one day I will have a chance to fly with you 👨🏽✈️
I love everything about aviation except flying... My career was in industrial maintenance. I understand Electrical, Hydraulics,
Hydronics and Control systems and what can go wrong, that's what worries me.
Big fan, hope we meet one day 👍
Thanks! Come say hi if you ever see me at the airport
Well as a contractor you run your own profits so its quite important to know what the rates are usually like out 👍there
@FlyWithOwen Newer CSEL guy here, at what hr mark would you start to invest in Type ratings? I’m very interested in CE-525s but don’t want to get it so early that I can’t exercise it for a few hundred more hours, due to the market and insurance. #flywithowen
I would only invest in one if you have guaranteed work lined up with somebody.
Funny enough my name is also Owen. Hopefully starting flight school in August.
Would you recommend getting a G4 type rating or a G5.
Love it! I’m an airline pilot with 10.000hrs and planning on transitioning to contracting, great content here!
its nothing like airline flying...much much more demanding flying, uncontrolled airports, bad weather, gps approaches, no approach lights, 14 hours on 10 hours off and thats if you're at the best fractional place, otherwise you have no duty time limits... ect. Private jet pilots should be making $1,000,000 a year at least for that job.
Well, Joaoalves, see if you can stay in touch with Owen here. If you want to transition ove to corporate business jet flying. At least, hopefully, you will be able to make your own schedule from referrals what flights you what to fly. Instead of flying with 200 or 300 passengers in the back of the cabin you would be flying with possibly 10 or 12 passengers in the and one ir two corporate Flight Attendants. Yes, there will be pros and cons but it is what you said that you want to transition to. Again, stay in contact with Owen and his friend here as well.
Seriously? Why? You’re making more than $2K/day
I want to thank Owen for sharing his passion to fly. And if other pilots want to go from commercial airline to corporate business jets then so be it. There is a lot of travel on the corporate side of the Aviation business. And so since Owen shares his knowledge and has a lot of pilot friends who also fly on a contract corporate pilot free schedule then why not. There are other corporate pilot jobs as well. A commercial pilot my go over to a charter or a client fractional ownership company like Netjets or Flexjets and others. So, there are other ways to enjoy flying and maintaining some great income. Flying a Gulfstream or Bombardier or a Cessna aircraft is not a bad thing at all. There are some great owners out there who need pilots to fly their aircraft. So, yes, Joaoalver has to do some research and ask around to many different pilots to her a good understanding as to how to transition over to Corporate Business Jets.
thats $750,000 a year for contract pilots, assuming they fly every day.. so if an owner just paid someone $250,000 a year to be their sole pilot, they are mkaing out pretty well, and the pilot is too, especially if they dont fly all the time.
Cool !
Nice 😊
Why are the thrust levers not set the same while in cruise?
you guys are so cool 😎😎
Just curious, did you pay for your own G450/550 type rating upfront?
Are you using a factory flow/checklist?
Where did the FO get his shirt. My grandon is 15 !/2 and is in flight training.
Currently in A&P school. My dream was always to fly and my medical was delayed at 18 years old so I thought I could never fly. I now have my medical, and plan on flying during the summer once I am working full time and can pay for my PPL. Would you say having an A&P is useful in the contract world? I love jets and want to fly gulfstream and globals.
- Thank you
Having an A&P will definitely help. Yet another way to improve your value.
Yes sirrrrrrr!!!
Yes pleeeaaaaaaseee!!! Thanks youuuuuuuuuuu!!!
Is it possible to match the throttles and activate N1 sync?
Used to do it on the md80
how much would it cost approximately to get the training to be a pilot and is there an upper age limit for starting the work?
