There's an order in which we approach our food: 1. A very small portion of the dessert (usually payasam / kheer) is served at the bottom right corner of the leaf. You are supposed to start off your meal with this - the sweet helps activate your salivary glands. 2. The next step is to eat a small portion (just a couple of morsels) of hot rice mixed with ghee (clarified butter), salt (to taste) and dal. The ghee helps lubricate your gut, while the dal helps subdue the acid in your stomach. 3. Then you get on with the meal - the usual order is rice with sambar, then rice with rasam; you have a lot of side dishes like pickle, curry, chutney, papad / chips & veggies to go with it. 4. The dessert in full quantity is usually served after the rasam rice and before curd rice - this is to restrict your appetite and prevent overeating. 5. In the end you have curd rice - this is a coolant to your system and helps in digestion. Also to be noted is that you have curd rice for lunch and rice with buttermilk (diluted curd) for dinner, because curd is heavy and difficult to digest when you sleep. 6. Lastly, the role of salt: add water to the salt served on the top left corner of the leaf, and rinse your fingers in the salt water - this helps get rid of all the grease on your fingers. 7. End your meal with paan. @Rick: Paan isn't made using banana leaves. It is made using betel leaves. The filling in the paan is usually bits of arecanut / betelnut, sugar and a bit of limestone paste smeared on the leaves. This aids in digestion. And that's how you do justice a South Indian meal !!

Santosh Raghavan I think americans and others don’t have a culture of washing hands after eating. That is why they don’t have “Hot Water in bowl” at end of meal in restaurant to clean hands. Also, I haven’t seen any american or any westerners even going to wash hands agter eating. That’s why because they don’t use their hands.
what they didnt mention is the shape of the leaf - its shaped similar to our tongue - and each food items are suppose to be placed similar to where the sensory regions are in our tongue. Like salt is placed at the tip etc
There are no such regions. It is a myth. All tastes are tasted on every part of the tongue. As for the placement, I’ve only seen desis so confidently and shamelessly make up these fake stories.
Actually south india has preserved our culture because in north we use banana leaf and other leaf plates on occasions like weddings and other cultural events. Loved this way. It's good for us and for the environment.
My mom feed me many times with her hands... And believe me... It's the best experience... You will feel the love in that food.. Weather its tasty of not.. You will definitely eat more than you should..
In European restaurants they don't serve ketchup or chilli flakes etc, because you are supposed to eat what the chef prepared for you. You are not supposed to alter the food. Indian cuisine is complete opposite of that where you are served multiple things of different flavours and textures and it is upto you to mix and match and choose what to eat. It is true for something as simple as pani puri where atleast two different waters are given (sweet red and spicy green) to most elaborate south Indian meals where you have 4-50 dishes depending on the grandiose of the meal.
Korbin you don't know what you are missing out on.... Eating with hands is such a beautiful experience... In India we learn that we should use all our senses while eating food.
In india when you feed another person with your own hands it showing immense love towards that person. Indian mothers do it all the time to their children. Its a custom in Indian marriages that the marrying couple is asked to feed each other to create a bonding.
9:10 EXPERIENCE! It's weird coz we eat using our hands for all the 3 meals. Of course it depends like if you are in a fancy restaurant, you use cutleries 😬
The antioxidants (polyphenols) in banana leaf is reported to help fight cancer. ... Banana leaves are also used in some ayurvedic medicinal preparations. @@rajnizamre7717 Yes I think so, otherwise I would've given some pretty good lectures about paan to my friends.
Me to friends - Sunlo gawar logo, Paan banana leaves se banti hai. Koi khayega nai Aaj se.
It looked a bit uncomfortable for Korbin,😂(Which is fine).
@Harshal Pathak Misconception.
We, from the south of India eat a lot on the banana leaf, especially during festivals and religious ceremonies. I invite you both to attend my wedding at the end of this month so that you may experience eating on a banana leaf 🙏 We'll arrange for spoons for you, Korbin, don't worry 😊
Congratulations! Wish you two a long happy married life ❤️
@@melaniedominick9394 Thank you for your lovely wishes, Melanie! 😊
@Suresh M I'll have to disagree with you on that, Sir I live in a metro and we ensure we use banana leaves during religious ceremonies and any other function we want to regardless of whether it's in a banquet hall or not. There are even restaurants that also serve food on banana leaves in my city.
@shri Thank you for your wishes! 😊
Yes, I have noticed this and have eaten food on a leaf (not sure if it was a banana leaf) during Ganpati at a family friend's place who are Maharashtrians. So yes, eating on a leaf is not exclusive to only South Indians.
@shri Good to learn the exact word. Yes, I'm sure other parts of the country use other types of leaves, as long as they're big in size to hold food.
Regarding your last sentence, it's probably just the way we live without us intending to be traditional :)
You know korbin.. we have this practice called kaituttu ( hand bites is the literal translation!) Usually our granny would make all her grandchildren sit around her with the food bowl in her hand. Each one of us would put our palm out and she puts a bite of food on each palm and this goes into 10 to 15 rounds.. the yummiest meal I have ever had.. oh it would be accompanied with story Or a song by granny..
Korbin how can you trust a spoon which is washed and cleaned by someone else and not trust something that you get to clean daily ..
Santosh Raghavan Americans don't have a culture of washing hands before every meal like we do.
@@ays162 bro..don't you think it's basic hygenie ? and secondly even if they don't.. surely they wash it sometime during the day and they know how they use their hands.. the same can't be said about a spoon can it ?
Santosh Raghavan I think americans and others don’t have a culture of washing hands after eating. That is why they don’t have “Hot Water in bowl” at end of meal in restaurant to clean hands. Also, I haven’t seen any american or any westerners even going to wash hands agter eating. That’s why because they don’t use their hands.
@@deeprahul bro it's not about before or after ...my point is simple.. ur hands are under your control.. not a spoon
Goodly said, washing with toxic chemicals and korbin is trusting it. Pathetic
Very informative discussion after the video.. One of your best yet
what they didnt mention is the shape of the leaf - its shaped similar to our tongue - and each food items are suppose to be placed similar to where the sensory regions are in our tongue. Like salt is placed at the tip etc
Wow..never imagined that
Oh!!! Wowww I didn't know that!!!
It is true for something as simple as pani puri where atleast two different waters are given (sweet red and spicy green) to most elaborate south Indian meals where you have 4-50 dishes depending on the grandiose of the meal.
there is always salt, pepper, chili garnishings you can add to dishes in european and north america restaurants, what the hell are you talking about
Korbin you don't know what you are missing out on.... Eating with hands is such a beautiful experience... In India we learn that we should use all our senses while eating food.
"Eating Indian food with utensils is like making love with your clothes on!" - Old Indian adage :-)
M sitting on couch and having my coffee and the notification pops..jumpe like a rabbit and clicked it ..and now watching it..good morning OSR😍😍
Nw all the coffee is spilled 😂
In india when you feed another person with your own hands it showing immense love towards that person. Indian mothers do it all the time to their children. Its a custom in Indian marriages that the marrying couple is asked to feed each other to create a bonding.
I am a south Indian and those mentioned in the video is very much true for us..it's just for fun that the video has been made in a sarcastic way.
So Rick has wet dreams about Alia.... feeding him 🤣
😂😂😂😂☠️☠️☠️
What the fuck?
rani will kill him now😂
Lol
9:10 EXPERIENCE! It's weird coz we eat using our hands for all the 3 meals. Of course it depends like if you are in a fancy restaurant, you use cutleries 😬
The antioxidants (polyphenols) in banana leaf is reported to help fight cancer. ... Banana leaves are also used in some ayurvedic medicinal preparations. By serving hot food on a banana leaf, one could get a lot of those good stuff although the leaf is hard to digest for human when eaten as-is. It is hygienic.
I hope you visit a village in India where all grandmothers and mothers are waiting to hand feed Korbin
Howdy Rick & Korbin
Since the day I stumbled upon your channel I am glued to it and each day i've have to watch ur videos or else i feel .... don't know or cannot explain how I feel but I do need to watch ur videos to energize my day. Your reaction, analysis, knowledge & most importantly ur family is amazing. Do keep up the job and I'll also try to explain most of the things that may not be up to ur knowledge.
Bye have a nice day.
PS - Korbin don't Korbinize my name.
The difference in our culture is highlighted when you guys watch these kind of videos. Come to Kerala and attend a wedding and visit during Onam festival in Aug-Sep next year (Korbin will not be able to travel though with the baby 😕). You can experience it first hand. After watching the video, I feel like eating a ‘sadya’ 😋
Rick, Indrani fed you? Aww that’s the sweetest thing. Unless you truly love the person and are totally comfortable with him/her, no one would do it. You lucky man ❤️🥳
One more thing, if u have poisoned food on banana leaf, it changes color.
Really??
@@Sats33 Exactly my reaction.
But come to think of it, probably true since it is cut from a living tree and used very soon thereafter, it might still have pigments and proteins which might react with poison- maybe. Can't say for sure.
@@aninditabanerjee2420 oh then it's really great. I love to eat in banana leaf everyday and in home some ppl eat in silver plate as it is considered good for health..
Yeah it's also rings an alarm.
@@aninditabanerjee2420 banana trees can do photosynthesis for nearly 1day even after being cut. That is the reason they tie banana trees in the entrance of south Indian wedding venues. Yes it has properties to dedect poisons food to some extend.

The one and only time I ate off a banana leaf was at Biriyani House in Bangalore. I chose to do so just for the experience- especially knowing I was not going to eat anything liquid. Loved the experience(the heavenly Biriyani might also have something to do with my enjoyment). I have had food served on plates lined with a banana leaf cut into circles more often though.
Korbin - you're so scared of the 'germs' they might give you so you wouldn't allow anyone to feed you by hand. quick question- do you ever - ahem - kiss?
Good one🤣
And by shaking hands also more germs r passed on

Betel Leaf is used in Paan.
In India, we use Areca leaf (in northern part) and Banana leaf(in southern part).
That's beauty of our nation ♥️
And Areca leaf and banana leaf adds some unique flavour to it. And it's more healthier.
I have never seen it being used in U.P.
Confused now. Areca is Supari, no? Supari trees are palm trees like Coconut. How can you eat from their leaves? What is the Hindi word for whatever leaf you are talking about?
@@EagleOverTheSea Google it 😅
@@BishvendraSingh OK. Those are not the leaves. They are the pods in which the areca flower resides.
@@EagleOverTheSea they even uses leaves and joins them together to form a plate. Usually found in rural parts.
Wow I loved the video Banana leaf 101.....it was awesome.....also ur reaction to it was great.
1:29 no Rick, it's Betle leaf which is used to make paan
Yes but it is spelled as Betel leaf. Beetle is an insect and also a Volkswagen car model.
South indian food on banana leaf is pure bliss 😍😍😍
Banana Leaf is also known as Plantain leaf. Great you reviewed this video. You can eat anything on this plate from nature.
The sarcasm is for those indians who are ignorant about science involved eating with hands or those who feels eating with hands is ugly.
I am chuckling watching this blog after having seen our oh so dainty Korbin eating with his fingers (blasphemy!) while on his trip to India.
Korbin my fellow, you sure have come a long way😝
Come on Korbin if someone is feeding you and you say no , you would miss out on tasting love 🥰
Wah kya baat hai 👌👌👌
i Love all your videoooO's Bro.... keep up the good work
In most of the functions in South India, meal is served in Banana Leaves only. Nowadays, there will be options like whether on Banana Leaves or Plates.
It was really original and genius form of sarcasm because all the things that they told are legit table manners plus some cheeky things that people do in public gathering to get refills.
Thanks for reacting south india food i am from south india💓
Even olden days kings used to eat food in golden and silver utensils but still they used banana leaves on top of it.. As hot food served on banana leaf it gives wonderful taste and amazing flavor. There are some wonderful dishes prepared using banana leaves like roasted fish wrapped banana leaves
There is another one like this...
South Indian 101- "Veshti"
The idol which is behind Rick is natrajar. It takes more than 300 years to design. It is called cosmic dance.
Lol Korbin so white 😂 I love it
He is orange
on how to fold the leaf when ur done : My mom told me that u usually fold it towards urself if ur at a happy and joyful event Like weddings and birthdays
and u fold it away from u when ur at a sad event like a death(meaning when they do a ceremony after the person is already dead, for kinds remembering them)
Rick: You are like my son.
Korbin: Yeah, I don't like it. XD XD
In India, a child starts his/her first food with the hands of their parents or elder one and even when grown up, we love to have that moment with our loved ones.
Korbin at the Curd rice was like - "eeeeeeek!"

Omg I went years back to my childhood ! Thank you guys !! 🙏 Now I have lost touch of eating with my own hands, and we always get those disposable plates everywhere ☹️☹️
Korbin, to enhance the experience of having food its scientifically proven that you should have it with hands.
Beetle leaves are used to prepare Paan and it's like a dessert towards the end of the meal. Eating in Banana leaf is our culture. Banana leaves are preferred mostly in all South Indian Marriages and functions..Thanks for selecting this video
Korbin was so uncomfortable eating with hands😅 It's okay korbin, you can use fork and spoon eating on banana leaf as well 😂
Technical aspects were correct, serious authentic information with a little bit of sarcasm....
Korbin that is the exact reaction I give when I see people eating steak- rare...eeeeek sometimes I even see blood ..
And the size of the turkey leg ! Or the chicken with all parts intact placed on the family dinner table ! 😳😳😳🤪🤪🤪

We, The Assamese, from the North-East too use banana leaves as plates.. We also consume the Banana Shoots (inner tender part) and we call it Kol Posola.. The Banana Flower is also an Assamese delicacy and we call it Kol Dil... The Kol Posola and The Kol Dil are integral parts of Assamese Cuisine...
Eating on banana leaf is a vedic culture
..u LL find this culture in every villages of India
Hahaha awesome video and korbin's personal perception👌👌
Bengalis used to eat on banana leafs too. In fact when I was a kid it was quite common at public functions. But it has gone down off late.
Maybe because if everyone do it then you conume leafs faster than the trees can produce it. Also metal utensils have years of life and can be recycled too. So it's best when only a limited number of people are doing the leafs.
Sitting in UK currently and you guys made me hungry for a South Indian banana leaf meal now!
Korbin can be so weird sometimes
That is his charm. Korbin wouldn't be Korbin if he weren't weird.

I don’t think he is weird or insulting ! It’s just that he has never done these things in his whole life, so it’s naaa for him ! It’s not easy for everyone to accept any new thing they come across ! Lol. So true. 6:12 when you ask for something extra but for the person next to you and sneakily ask the server to serve you on the leaf. Well done. Captures the essence very well of a South Indian
A lot of non south Indians probably learnt something too ..
Well don’t you eat burgers and pizzas with hands! Though it’s really an art and requires practice to eat rasam with hands..... it’s time taking but fun!
Banana leaves are also used to eat food on here in some parts of Assam on some special occasions like pujas
It's more sensible to use your own hand n fingers to eat than use spoon n forks which are used by number of people before.
If u don't trust ur own hand means u don't wash them clean.
I remember eating on banana leaves during weddings, puja feasts etc when I was younger. Nowadays its only paper or plastic plates. I still love to eat on banana leaf from my backyard garden during puja feasts.

It's a satire on how the tech Giants introduce there products. And how they categories their products according to the price. And beside the leaf which is biodegradable. I found that man himself is a great gadget than any other.
