      Don't limit the experience of enjoying a video only to the South indians. There are other parts of the country too where banana leaf and stem is used as utensils, like the NE. We can relate to this video as much as you do.

      @@shashwat8546 depends on my preference. the food starting from southern Gujarat to costal regions Maharashtra and then proceeding to southern India has meticulous way of preparation. I have never been to Punjab and UP would love too as I believe there is lot explore in those parts but from what I had even the simplest of southern preparation leaves a mark.

    Am from Delhi..and whenever I come to Chennai, I insist to serve the food in banana leaf only .. Also the banana leaf is larger than the plates, so it becomes easy to accommodate a wide variety of food.. Through this video only i have learnt to eat rasam sorru, otherwise everytime the rasam would start flowing here and there and make the appalam soggy :P

    I'm from Telangana and I can totally relate to this eating-in-a-banana-leaf experience. My grandmother always made me to eat food in a banana leaf. Actually, this way of eating is gradually decreasing in South too. People nowadays are adapting western ways of living in every field of their life and forgetting our culture, traditions and values. This makes me sad.

    Your last part on folding the leaves is wrong. That is a old wife's tale of noncomprehension. So they just spin the story.
    There is a science behind that too. In ancient times we sat on the floor and the family would serve you, or the servers would serve you. And they do that by walking in front of the leaves while you sat behind it. And while they were at it, Whatever that was served had a chance of being spilled outwards like the curries for example. And that is a sin if anyone was to step of food served. And hence the practice of folding the leaves inwards towards you instead of outwards, where there is a possibility of the curries to flow out onto the floor where the servers walk.
    These days we sit on tables and if you folded your leaves inwards, the curries would fall into your lap, pants or dress or anywhere towards you, so to prevent that you fold it outwards.
    Understand?

  • @dnivaranamaratis
    @dnivaranamaratis 9 лет назад +16

    Nice and funny video. Some errors. 1) All salted materials are served on the top half all non-salted items on the bottom half (closer to the eater). 2) We start serving with a sweet kept on the lower right hand side (closer to the eater's right hand). Subsequent sweets are placed on left middle lower part. 3) Additional Payasam is served after Rasam sadham (rasam/chaaru/saru rice) where the Appalam is crushed and mixed by many not with the Payasam. 4) Sweets are not served last as was pointed out. Thair Saadam or Curd Rice comes last. 5) Rice is not served away from the body the way it was shown (done only for death ceremonies). For happy occasions, the rice is served from the opposite side in a natural flow of the wrist and not opposite way as done during death events. Same goes for all food items. 6) Closing the leaf is different for different communities and no set rule on how to close or what it indicates. Many communities do not close at all. 7) An important element missed out is how to indicate you don't want anymore as people come to serve you. You use your left hand over your leaf and wave it (emphatically sometimes). You do not do that with your right hand as it can spill and splatter and therefore considered uncouth.

    no one in andhra will dig into sambhar the very moment they start the meal. Dal/pappu first, then curry ,then sambhar is eaten stepwise. Also we don't powder that papad like tamils do or mix it with dessert, that is reserved exclusivly as a side crunch to sambhar or rasam. So 'south indian meal' is a little generelization.

    • @Hari-bz1mh
      @Hari-bz1mh 6 лет назад

      Asvinau I'm from andhra too but we don't start with pappu in our family. Pachchadi comes first, then Kura, then pappu and finally sambhar and rasam. Ending with perugu annam, of course. I've never seen telugus starting a meal with pappu first, unless of course it is mudda pappu and some pulusu.

    • @shivakumarvanugu3860
      @shivakumarvanugu3860 6 лет назад +2

      Yeah pappu comes first and appadam as side crunch. Curd rice is at last. Many times we don't see sambhar. It is replaced with rasam. We Telugu eat more rasam then sambhar.

    Very good concept and video. Karthik's narration is excellent and expressive. We should bring back the culture of eating in the banana leaf often at home.

    Please add seating position is important to intake enough food, when a person weak on food n taste he eat more than easy digression, seating in crisscross legs means (sukasana), why u for got betel leaves sweet Pan to clear digression, Nowadays food has indigestive chemicals so, than only its finished
