The absolute Flog In Chief. Turnbull at least tried to bring some kind of meaningful centrism and climate awareness to the Liberals. Abbott was an arse but at least didn’t hesitate to hold a hose in the literal sense. Even Howard for all his evil acts at least gave a sense of conviction of his actions and love of his country. But ScoMo? As a country we should be asking ourselves how the hell a man of ilk ever got anywhere near the top job.

Let's be clear, American never promised not to move NATO east, Gorbachev is on *record* as saying there was no such deal. Also by giving even a minor concession to Putin is to give legitimacy to his imperialist ambitions, so let us say it together now, *_Ukraine is a sovereign country_* .

The narrative that countries can only join an alliance based not on their own free will but their proximity to Russia is ridiculous anyway. All it does is show how unlikeable Russia is as a neighbouring country. Russia should be more concerned with repairing their relationships with its neighbouring countries, rather than force-blocking them from an opposing alliance. Russia is just being a bully, plain and simple.

Yeah, the was never a formal signed agreement about NATO er 'expanding' East. Also, expanding is a misnomer. Countries asked to join, central and Eastern European countries that didn't want to become controlled by Russia again. The process of joining NATO isn't exactly easy or quick. It is also a misrepresentation of what NATO actually is.

    • @larsalvik93
      @larsalvik93 6 месяцев назад +16

Yep, the NATO expansion story is the Russian equivalent of the German WWI stab-in-the-back myth. It also conveniently glosses over the Budapest memorandum where Russia actually signed a piece of paper respecting Ukraine's borders. To parrot Russian propaganda is not a vanilla view of the conflict.

A very diplomatic walk around Higgins and Lehreeman. I think an issue you really didn't go into but affected the Morrison Government was the excessive use by politicians of liable laws during this time. All accountability had gone out the window and people were being prosecuted for having a public opinion. Add to that the complete lack of accountability including the proper follow up by the media, The inappropriate conduct by ministers and staff be it Joyce's Office Baby, Porters dalliance with his Press Sectary whilst being married and resulting in a 6 figure compensation payout paid by the taxpayer, even his interview where he was so insincere as to use a picture of his kids on the lectern to ensure he would cry on demand. Linda Reynolds deliberate coverup by knowingly getting the couch steam cleaned the next day and her attitude towards her staff let alone the her hiding behind parliamentary laws whilst hurling abuse yet the moment it was returned from the outside bringing taxpayer funded legal action. People might be coming around to the realization that there was something rotten going on.
I know a fellow who is a big fan of Morrison and his church. When the election didn't go their way that night he said to me it was beyond his control no one could have remained with the natural disasters that were happening. In a once in a life time opportunity I replied Well that's the thing, Morrison has been so dodgy with Robodebt and his conduct in office Even God decided to do something to get it sorted. The look on his face was priceless...

Regarding the so called "Promise not to expand Nato" - Which treaty was signed? Where did the US and NATO promise to not expand east? Was Poland a signatory to it? Was Latvia? Why should these nations not be allowed to seek security through, I don't know, a treaty org or a mutual defense pact? Can you please cite it?
There was the Budapest Memorandum - the signatories to which were meant to guarantee Ukrainian sovereignty, but it doesn't mention NATO's potential expansion. Hmm so strange!

Mate, love your coverage; however it feels *a bit* disingenuous to say you have a "vanilla" opinion on the Ukraine war & then proceed to state 'Putin bad but the US kinda made him do it sooo 🤷'.
Trust me, not a US stan by any means - they're obviously a bad colonial power with some pretty, *ahem* cooked foreign (& domestic) policy. However, the insinuation that Russia is not every bit the same level of tyranny as the US (arguably, worse in many respects) & the main reason they tried to genocide Ukraine was because 'US did kinda push them into it' is so far far-left it's wild. The only people I have seen espousing that rhetoric are 'tankies' who are so obsessed with the evils of the US they can't accept that it's possibly for other countries to be equally as awful. Maybe read some less Chomsky & do a deep-dive into how the majority of ex-Soviet states view their oppressor!
I mean, just look at the polling for support of military aid to Ukraine in these ex-bloc countries...y'know, the same countries who 'made the US break the "not one inch to the east" pact' by petitioning NATO to join (not the other way around). Hmm, almost like they wanted some collective defence from an invasion by a brutal neighbour with a large land army...I wonder who that could be? 🤔
You make great videos, I just feel like it's important you don't feed your (probably) impressionable audience a, well, rather extreme view as being somehow middle of the road. Peace out, thanks for the content & happy holidays!

@@Mr_M_History the promise of "not an inch further" is only communicated through diplomatic means, memoranda, speeches, meetings, etc. There was no formal written agreement such as a treaty. It says so in the source you've given
Yes you can technically argue that this was still NATO "provoking Russia" but that requires a definition of provoking that would be so vague and applicable to anyone that Aussies could use it to say "China was provoking us by cosying up with the Solomons, we have to invade them to insure our national security" It's a bullshit argument used to justify wars of aggression.
It's also very important to clarify that warming of relations goes both ways. Ukraine had codified its neutrality in 2010, asserting itself as a non-bloc country. This was completely violated by Russia in 2014, since then Ukraine has been directly seeking NATO membership since, the only major thing that has changed politically since then was that Zelenskyy succeeded Poroshenko in 2019. So no, I do not believe the West's attitude in integrating Ukraine "provoked" Russia to invade.
The only thing you could say from that is that Ukraine's internal political development caused Russia to invade, which yeah okay? That's called a war of aggression.
      www.rferl.org/a/ukraine-parliament-abandons-neutrality/26758725.html
I see a lot of people here and in the US regularly downplay Russia's role in this by saying things like "oh both sides are at fault" and "the west has compromised Russia's sovereignty". And it's fair enough, we all want to avoid an actual war, as an Aussie I held this view for all of 22 and much of 23. It's only when I talked to my family in Europe and really understood what game Russia plays.
The simple fact is that Russia's security interests and view on guaranteeing peace does not align with Europe's.
      www.chathamhouse.org/2023/06/how-end-russias-war-ukraine/fallacy-4-russian-security-concerns-must-be-respected
During the time that Europe has experienced two major wars, (Yugoslav and Bosnia), as well as several conflicts around Kosovo, Russia has invaded Georgia 4 times, Ukraine twice, Moldova once, and is involved regular guerilla wars in the Northern Caucuses which have been ongoing since fucking 92.
Europeans are acutely aware of Russia and know full well that they should be condemned every step of the way, and that any attempt no matter how small to shift blame away from Russia, will only encourage it to engage in more wars of aggression.

I actually think its a shame that Frydenberg lost his seat. The libs under him would have been much more moderate and much more likely to support the Voice, which would have given it bipartisan support, making it far more likely to pass.

All politics are local. The relationship with China had no bearing on how people voted nor could the average person give a stuff about the Solomon Islands. Just another Pacific Island country begging for handouts as they always do. Morrison was like Churchill, a victim of the end of a crisis. COVID election winner Ardern in New Zealand also ran off when her post-COVID popularity slumped to certain defeat this year. Palaszczuk who easily won an election in Queensland during COVID is heading for defeat in 2024. . They all end up being blamed for the things they did and the things they didn't do as people try to return to normality . They get blamed for things over which they had no control. Churchill made a comeback when the new broom turned out to be dud. The Albanese government in Australia is tracking towards being a one-term wonder. The other problem Morrison had was a vengeful media who blamed him for the embarrassment they suffered when they said Labor would win the 2019 election. The press gallery's most "knowledgeable " commentators were made to look stupid, notably Laura Tingle who predicted a easy win for Labor 48 hours before they lost. All local issues. Or personal.

Absolute Bullshit. All young people who understand the climate crisis were well aware of his disgusting behaviour towards Solomon islands. And 50% of voters are women who knew all about Scumo lies to the French ,abusing china causing wine, iron ore and lobster embargoes . And he told 50% of the voters they are lucky not to be shot. When we protested him covering up RAPE in Parliament house.
