  • In this episode of Tuna On Toast, Stryker catches up with 311 frontman Nick Hexum. Nick looks back at his band's early days, moving from Omaha to LA, why radio stations were initially hesitant to play 311, and how opening for Fugazi and Oingo Boingo impacted his career. Nick also recalls working with NBA superstar Shaquille O'Neal on the music video for "You Wouldn't Believe" -- and why Shaq threatened to sue the band! 311 has released 13 albums in their career spanning over 30 years, and Nick reveals that NEW MUSIC is on the way! He also details a scary RV fire in the band's early days that could have cost them their lives! Mosaic is definitely the best 311 release since Evolver. Those first 6 records speak for themselves.

    • @bafmd
      @bafmd Год назад +1

      Since Evolver...
      Don't Tread on Me is a fantastic album full of love songs.
      Uplifter is only redeemed from it's B-Sides (Sun Come Through and Get Down are top tier, imo). I seriously blame Bob Rock.
      Universal Pulse has some quality jams on it.
      Stereolithic is my personal favorite since Evolver.
      Mosaic is quality 311.
      Voyager is 50/50 for me. The whole Crossfire/Heist issue. I prefer the Ralston tracks.
      👌🤘

    • @duganred
      @duganred Год назад +3

      @@bafmd Mosaic and Stereolithic definitely separate from the pack. DTOM demo leaks turned that album sideways (strong B-sides, tho) the Bob Rock experience sucked. He normalized them. Universal Pulse was better than Uplifter, but the album was too short to rank high. Uplifter had a few songs I still dig, but the bulk was way too cheesy lyrically for me (again, solid b-sides) Voyager had the copyright issues you mentioned and that turned me off

    • @Rob_Cary
      @Rob_Cary Год назад

      They shoulda redone universal pulse with a production that knows what they're doing. It often gets grouped in with uplifter due to both having bad production but universal pulse was the bands reinvigoration after dtom and uplifter. It sounds like Bob Rock didn't even mix or master it.

I just finished working on a guitar/bass cover for tune in and I think that should be a more well known sleeper. Pnuts parts in the bridge were actually kinda tough! He was taking a break but now he isn't. Despite the talk of how it had to do with Chad, Chad walked back his regretful tweet a week later. I don't think it had anything to do with it. Out of all the speculations that were floating around out there, the most believable one to me was that he was not liking how much they had been going to outside writers lately. Who knows though. Just glad he's stickin around!

    Evolver was one of the most important albums to happen in my life. It came out the year I graduated from high school so I was cutting ties with a lot of people I'd never see again and becoming my true self. It also came out when a lot of important 9/11 truth stuff was happening and the lyrics just resonated with me. Had I not discovered the lies of 9/11 I probably would have gone along with the lies of covid and everything else they throw at us.
