A big reason I love Bill Bachman is because he actually has phrasing, as opposed to just ramming notes. Plus, there is thematic development. Chops are fine, but why not be musical while you're at it? That's why I like Bill. He is the Steve Gadd of quads (and he's also pretty good at drum set).
I gotta` admit, the plan was to tear a phone book in half at the end and then throw the loose pages at the camera, but I couldn't figure out the secret method of tearing the phone book. There will be disappointments in life...
I know I'm commenting on a now 12 year old video. But I just now realized that Bill's shirt looks like it's damp from sweat or water (or it could just be the camera's lightning). Either way, that is hype. Best quote I had from a drum instructor: "If you're not sweating by the end of your chop out, you're doing it wrong". Bill is a real legend.
I know i'm commenting on a comment that's now 1 year old... but looking at the sweat marks on his shirt, looks like he had his drum harness on before recording this.
@@joshuanavarro3586BOO don’t ruin the magic. Nah but for real - closer look it definitely looks like the old Dynasty harness outline. Good catch. Either way. Badass.
Thanks for the compliments! The sticks are the new Vic Firth "Billy Club" prototypes, they'll debut at PASIC in early November. Quad lines can now have the big beefy sound and maneuverability of mallets combined with the quickness and great rimshot sound of sticks!
@qbachman i saw your reffered beats video i gotta say you are one of my idols and such a beast at tenors love that 180 you do with your bmx bike over you set of tenors and you judge my school at the south texas classic and gave my school best tenor award your such a beast and your new stick the billy club is awesome
I was at one his and Jeff queens clinics and he played this perfectly. I was amazed because he said he hadn't played it in a year and was nails on it!!
@littlesnareboy My take on it is this: The second lower pitch spock has always sounded kind of sad to my ears. It can't compete with the real spock in terms of "pop" and it certainly doesn't sonically fit in with the main four drums. I've just never been attracted to it. I'd prefer a few more flams over another little drum that sounds weird.
My friend is doing this for his tenor solo this year. Ive only seen 1 other person play this and that was my brother and he was 1 point off of gold. It can be done but, but with serious dedication
Hey my cousin plays mallets in Harpeth (jacob), just wanted to thank you cause he really wants to be good at quads now. And he deffinitely has the potential!
I just had a drumline audition and I used this piece to audition for quadline, but I messed up the cross-overs at the beginning and it hurts me on the inside thinking about how bad I failed on that part...
I think he was trying to take it all to a new level, after playing drumset for a while since making a new solo, it definitely influenced this... it's more than just crazy sweeps and rolls. I'm not saying the "different" parts are amazing but I think he may be on to something.
@quadbeast11 Definitely neither, the Vic Firth Billy Club is the answer for me. It's powerful and easy to maneuver like a quad mallet, but plays more like a stick and allows you to hit rimshots on any drum. I designed it to take the best attributes of both a stick and mallet, but without the drawbacks of either.
@qbachman Totally agree. Just started working at a school with 6 drums instead of 5. I've found writing and phrasing harder than with 5. Maybe if I played 6 since the beginning it would be a different story, but for me the 5 drum set-up is still preferred over the 6.
Currently working on this for my Solo and Ensemble piece. Does anyone have any specific information on the notation used in bar 61 (beat 3)and 63 (beat 1)? My parents are both heavily involved in music and have never seen this notation. My band teacher has never seen it, a 60-year-old percussionist has never seen it, and a few other band directors have also been dumbfounded upon asking them. This is the only part of this song that really confuses me. My theory is playing the 4 16th notes in the space of 3 then rush the 32nd's into the quarter triplet on beat 4. Any advice is welcome, thanks!
Do you think that in the sheet music that thumbs up is in there? and make sure you're all sweaty before you play this?? haha jk. this is going in my all time favorites. I love you Bill Bachman
I noticed your rims were tilted slightly. Do you have any tuning tips on how to effectively tune the heads without breaking them, but implementing the tilt for better scrapes?
hey bill hey man i just cant find your billy club anywhere in stock i already checked the vic firth website and its out of stock on all the music stores any ideas where i can get a pair? please reply asap
Hey Bill, question for you. I'm seriously considering auditioning for the Blue Devils and/or SCV tenor lines next year, and I just need some advice on how to prepare, what I should be capable of on the tenor drums, etc. Thx!
I agree, I can see where he tried incorporating some of the drumset parts into it, obviously with the faked crosses, but this guy is a tenor genius and is well-known for his crazy sweeps and clean rolls. Opie's Opus is, what I think, more of what Bachman should really aim for, but If he is trying a new path, I don't think he should stray too far.
Damn. That's insane! I love it. What sticks are those that you're using? Although I'm not a fan of Dynasty drums, I must say that your tuning sounds great.
do rims exist in the world of Bill Bachman or does he magically make them dissapear while he's doing those insane scrapes and appear when he needs them
He has to write rim clicks into his pieces so the rims don't feel left out.
it's just that easy folks...
+Adrian Garcia beat me to it! LOL
the end scrapes section is the absolute most satisfying thing i have ever listened to
And the way he tunes his quads makes it soe much better. The playing was impeccable and the sound quality even more so.

Bill Bachman Bill here’s the secret....the spine must be broken in the middle. It’s like perforating it and then some uummpphh will be required

I FOUND 1 MISTAKE at 3:00 he hits drum instead of rim
Other than that idk man
Joshua Wilcken nice
Joshua Wilcken the irony...
Joshua Wilcken when your so good your mistakes aren't rims but drums
@@0Aquamelon his only mistake is not hitting a rim lol
Normal people: I just can't seem to stop hitting these rims!
Bill bachman: I just can't seem to hit rims!
2:38-2:53 And not a single rim was hit.
The only time he hits the rim is when he rimshots
Should have ripped a phone book in half at the end to get the full effect

I heard Bill Bachman has to write in rims so they don’t feel left out
Man I like the sound of those drums
I heard Bill Bachman doesn't even know what a rim is.
He's heard of it only in legend.
seriously a legend
seriously a legend
The only rim he knows is rim shots
That’s why he plays rims in the beginning. Just to prove his scrapes are godly and he knows what rims actually are
The Billy Clubs are amazing. Huge sound, short length for quickness, and Sta-Pac for durability. Great sticks.

Those scrapes from spock to 1 & 2 are mean.
Your hands are ridiculous. Every time I've seen footage of your playing, I've been impressed. Setting the bar high!
I just now recently discovered you, and now I can't get enough of you. Your simply amazing!
@mjfpercussion I'm really into the deep shells for the fatness and lower pitch.
I love your tuning. Your playing has been an inspiration to me since I first started playing tenors six years ago.
The spock is my favorite thing on quads. I'm sold for Dynasty because you show them off so well. I want my own pair of quints from Dynasty now.
Hey my cousin plays mallets in Harpeth (jacob), just wanted to thank you cause he really wants to be good at quads now. And he deffinitely has the potential!
I'm chopping out just by listening to this.
@qbachman I agree with that. This past summer we had the deep shells and they sounded superb! It's a much fuller and bolder sound to my ears.
Damn did you hear all the Rim he hit??
Yeah me neither..
dear bill, can you please make a video about how to tune a tenor drum? because your drums always sound like the best :p

Holly hell Mr. Bachman... You make me look so new at tenors hahaha. Great stuff.

Bill, why do you always have such awesome hardware on all the drums I see you play?
That's Awesome! Sweet rolls!
his drums are tuned beautifully
idk about all of you, but I heard Bill hitting a lot of rim in the beginning and in the end... :D
@theztcampbell i think the x's are crossovers and the parenthesis are rimshots so (x) would be both i think
He used to work at my high school, it's pretty cool!

Obviously Bill would! haha. I like the cream color on the drums. Very retro.
Hey Bill, how are your new sticks? They look awesome, but how would you describe the feel of them compared to other quad mallets/sticks?

has anyone noticed his sweat!? lol how many times did you rep this bill?? your like drenched !! and then the sweat marks change @2:24
Naw what happened was he just got done mowing a few lawns before the video and then he just came into the room and played the solo
Using DeLucia sticks? 💪👍
Mr bachman would u consider this ur most dificult solo? Is there anything more dificult coming out in the near future?
does that tenor have a rim?? why couldn't i hear it when he was doing those crazy scrapes?
Was this before he had his signature sticks?? Because, at some points it sounds like he's using Thom Hannum's signature quadbale sticks
I think I'm going to play this for P.A.S. this year.
