Hey y`all, here's a drumworkout.com blog on the subject of ensemble techniques for all of you marching band & drumcorps folks. It's a fantastically mis-understood can of worms and hopefully my little video here will help to lift the cloak of mystery off of it.

This is the reason I put the MET in the back field on the 50... Seems to work great.

+Kurwin Forest It's more effective to have someone carry it behind the battery. That way the students get the idea of "oh, the battery's behind me right here and I should listen back." If it's always back on the 50, students will get into the habit of listening back in that direction, but if there's no battery there (as drill moves around) it'll turn messy.

Up to 10 dislikes now. Almost guaranteed 9 of them are band directors that were clarinet players when they were music majors. The other one is Ken Mazur.

Thats not really correct for me I've done marching for 2-3 years and for me it comes easy now I know everything about it everything comes nearly easy all I gotta do is practice and it comes easy for me.

Match grip across the line means you teach 1 technique, 1 type of rotation across the entire battery. Its much easier to teach concepts this way as opposed to relying on traditional.
Also possibly the best video to show to directors regarding the travel of sound. I show this to everyone.

    • @RobotRebelCinema

Lol nothing against match grip as I am a former Tenor player, but God I hate watching snare drummers use match...
Where I come from snare drummers love using traditional.

I doesn’t matter what style you use as long as it is clean. The judges couldn’t give a shit about match or tradish. Match in the high school scenario is great for transitions of marching instruments as well as going back into the concert band season after marching band.

Bit of a late reply, but the reason they used matched grip is because snare drums lay flat, now. Snare drums used to REQUIRE traditional grip, because (traditionally), snares were on a sling which caused the snares to rest sideways. So it'd be impossible to play without traditional grip. Thanks to harnesses, now it lays flat. So you don't HAVE to play traditional.
