This has helped me so much because I don't think I have been consistent with my routine and haven't paid enough attention to my hair. So every week are you doing the exact same things step by step or do you sometimes skip ahead to deep conditioner or just a co-wash?
It depends on your hair type. Do you need protein? Is your hair feeling really “mushy” and too elastic? If so, then I would recommend doing a protein treatment.

I most say i haven't seen any RUclipsr so honest and detailed about hair care regime, with out talking about a particularly hair care brand. You are simply the best. I will try it and come give update.
I would like to add a few constructive comments: I don’t think your hair is naturally dry. I think you should spend more time saturating your hair with ALOT more water before cleansing. You should notice your hair looking substantially longer and stays long/stretched when it has received all the moisture (water) it can. If your hair strands are not taking in the water this means the cuticles are not opening up thus not allowing moisture to get in which means your conditioner is just sitting on top and will not be effective. Because you like to use oil for pre- poo, think about incorporating a moisturizing shampoo in your routine. Really massaging the shampoo into your hair strands. Shampoo helps lift the cuticles. The use of oils may be causing your hair to not receive the moisture it needs.
Yes! Type 4 hair needs constant conditioning and hydration! These oils do nothing but clog pores on the scalp! Oils should only be applied to ends of the hair, as sebum from the scalp is harder to reach the ends of type 4 hair.
Dawn’staste i agree. People often don’t realize that oils are deeply drying. I use oils on my hair daily, but I always make sure my hair is wet when using them. Also, I found that putting conditioner on my drenched hair and then adding more conditioner and water halfway through showering makes it more hydrated. Actually, my dermatologist told me to add water to my conditioned hair halfway through the shower. Super pro-tip that had a huge impact.
Yeah. I learned about pre poo and tried it, but every time I did it our tried the LOC method, my hair would end up dry and oily. I wasn't sure if it was the type of oil I used or if it was becauae I used oil at all. I decided to skip the oil. I have a routine now where I just wash my hair, deep condition with regular conditioner or a maske with rice water, rinse that out and I wet my hair with water, put petroleum jelly on it, and then put some curl activator cream on it. My hair becomes soft. I used to just put petroleum jelly on it with water when I learned that my mom used to use it on my hair, but when I started using the cream, my hair was extra soft. I usually just do twists or braids and that's it. Quick, simple, no crazy products. I just realized that petroleum jelly is like oil. Oops, but I guess it's the oil thay works for me. Everyone has different hair and what works for one person may not work for the next. Bit it's always ALWAYS important to moisturize and take care of your hair. Keep it healthy, whether it's short or long. Health is what we need to focus on first. I don't have 4c hair. I think I have a mix. Idk. But, our natural hair is beautiful and we need to treat it like our bodies: like a temple.
fanatsywriter 12345 I would think that using petroleum jelly is kind of damaging, if you aren’t regularly using a sulfate shampoo. There are plenty of oils that act like petroleum jelly, but allow your hair to breathe, and also add beneficial nutrients. Petroleum jelly is occlusive, and it adds nothing whatsoever. Even a nice herbal pomade would do the same thing and also give you the added nurturing benefits. There are some really well-formulates pomades around, with an oil base, maybe a mango butter or something for the base that would step things up a notch. But I wouldn’t use petroleum jelly and curl activator unless I washed my hair at least every other day with a sulfate shampoo that can get that stuff off of your hair completely. You are blocking our moisture just as much as you are sealing it in otherwise. And the buildup.
I’ve become an even lazier natural during quarantine. I do just 2 sections to wash. And wash and deep condition my hair in less than 20 mins. And 20 mins to moisturize and re-twist. (I used to wash in 6 twists, my hot water only last 20 mins)
I just started doing this routine about a month ago and noticed a difference. I work out alot so I try to find styles that can stay and I have to pin up my hair for work. Going to try the twist to the back. Your hair looks great!
Thank you! I work out too so some styles don't last long for me but i still stretch them during the week. Glad this routine is beneficial to your hair. x
Thanks so much for sharing, but holy moly this all seems like it takes forever. I'm just overwhelmed every time I even look at a 4C hair video and then I just end up leaving my hair in whatever style for months. I don't know what to do anymore, but I just can't take what's usually my one day off just to do all of this. And then it just doesn't help when any time I try to do something my mom just puts me down. Why can't we just have hair that doesn't need all this? I'm just tired.
For 8 years I have always started my routine by detangling my hair with Apple cider vinegar and water mixture, but I think I'm going to try the prepoo with oils. The thought of washing all those good oils out my hair is a little hard for me to grasp but I'll give it a try. Also I like how you keep your hair stretched during each routine, that should eliminate single strand knots.
I did the same years ago as well but I find the oils to be more moisturizing. I totally get washing the oils out, so that's why I use a simple oil like almond oil. Good luck and let me know how it goes! x
The Mielle Pomegranate and Honey line (shampoo, instant conditioner, leave-in conditioner, styling product, and almond mint oil) moisturizes my hair when I do not deep condition...I agree that pre-pooing really cuts down on tangles (I use a hair mask or a hair oil)...
Lived my whole life insecure of my “hair”. Had my first perm at 1 so what can I say? This makes me want to give my dry tumbleweed the time of day. Thank you ❤️
@@TZ2nd one??? Omgosh. I thought my mom was trippin when she got my hair permed at 6. But yeah I feel you on the insecure part...I am tired of fighting with my hair texture and decided to transition. My last perm was in January 2020. Usually around 3 months post I start getting the "when are you getting a retouch, your roots look so nappy" from relatives but now im just gonna suck it up and let my 4c hair grow out.
Enn Vee it’s the inevitable stage... the awkward stage. We’ve all had one, some can make it work with manipulation, others just have to soldier it out. I’m in the “growing out twa” phase. You don’t know how many times I’ve woken up and wanted to chop it all back off. But I’m riding it out!
ONE?! I don't think I've ever heard of someone relaxing their hair so young, I think the youngest was 4 and I thought that was bad. Definitely do embrace your hair, look after it and it will repay you the favour by flourishing ❤
I’ve always hair the coiliest hair type. I got called nappy headed and gross for putting oils in my hair. By my some of my white friends growing up. I’m 26 now and ready to grow these “naps.” Our hair is incredibly beautiful. It’s time we realize that. It’s time. It’s work. It’s money. It’s literally blood sweat and tears. But again it’s BEAUTIFUL. And no one else can grow that same magic. Thanks to you I’m on my way.
This video was everything that I needed immediately, inspiring, encouraging and more! Thank you so much!! #NewSubbie A few of my take-aways are: 1. Pre-Poo 2. Deep Condition 3. A confirmation that what worked on my shorter hair will not work on my longer hair. 4. Detangling with fingers and low manipulation styles. 5. SECTION MY HAIR! Thank you, thank you!
I would suggest a prepoo with a leave in conditioner along with an oil. It softens the hair by the morning before your wash routine. After shampooing I would suggest condition and detangle with a moisturizing conditioner rinse then deep condition. Hope this helps some one if still struggling.
This is my routine too. However I wash my hair every other week. But I do remoisturize weekly using the LOC method. I don’t use conditioners either.. waste of time.. just go straight to deep conditioning. Great video. TFS!
Thanks for sharing your routine. My issue with this is that it takes 2+ days. Pre-poo overnight then deep-condition overnight. It is this sort of thing that prevents black women from carrying their natural hair. It is the amount of work we have told them that they have to put in. Multiple complicated overnight steps. What happened to shampoo, rinse and detangling using a wide-tooth comb with a good conditioner with nice slip. A low maintenance style and keep it pushing. All takes 30 mins to 2 hours tops.
I'm viewing your channel today for the first time. I love how you break things down. Thanks for sharing your hair routine. Looking forward for more tutorials!

Hello Jenn. Thank you so much for making this video. I feel like I've finally found a role model on youtube and my hair can finally grow now. I'm Nigerian and I have very thick 4c hair and most times, I feel downcast because I put in so much and yet achieve very little but seeing your hair, those fears are all gone💝
Girls, she's right! Since I started pre pooing my hair and deep conditioning, it has improved! I normally use aloe fresh plant, castor oil, argan oil and any other available oils, cover it for as long as I can, wash, deep condition, rinse out condition! To style, I use a leave in conditioner spray, then add some oil and lotion, and plait it! I let it air dry and then I use electric comb to dry and straighten my hair! 😁 I shared my own tip too Thanks for your infos❤❤❤❤
This was my case...till I started detangling + pre-poo before washing, washing in twists and depp conditioning every 3-4 weeks, my 4c curls are defined now and super super soft. I'm still in awe
Try Ethiopian hair butter called Shuruba by shuruba.com! I'm ordering next month because I heard really good things about it for preepoo hydration, moisture and detangling!
Merilynda Phiri I had the tangles till my scalp hurt from combing. I got rid of that by changing how I wash my hair in the shower. No more bend over and keep my hair in one direction. I also sectioned and I make sure to hold each section downward. After a while I didn’t need to. My sister plaits her hair in the shower then styles later.
The reason I clicked on this video was because of the title and for tips but instead I find myself starring at your beauty. Nice tone and thank you for this video cause I had to rewatch in order to pay attention to what may benefit the health of my hair🙈🙈🙈🙈

I guess everyones hair is different. I'm 4b high porosity and I used Mielle organics over night deep condition and left in a little longer and my hair went into moisture overload. Its back to normal now.
Everyone's hair IS different! This is why I believe hair typing/understand porosity is important. It gives you an insight on what MAY work or may not. Moisture overload doesn't exist in my world lol but I am glad your hair is back to its happy self.
I section my hair into three parts into twists. I shampoo each part separately then twist it back and I do the same thing with conditioner, also after washing it, I apply dax indian hemp and wild growth hair oil. It works really well.

This is very eye opening. I have dry brittle hair. Would you advise me to stop pre-poo? And to stop adding an oil after the leave-in conditioner?
Glad this routine is beneficial to your hair. x
I love your versatility. Those twists were the bomb. Every style was rockin. My hair wants to be like yours when it grows up lol
I just cut my hair a few weeks back and this gives me motivation to not giving up on growing it! Thank u
Came here to learn how to keep my little sister’s hair moisturized and healthy. Any and all advice is appreciated. 💕
Welcome! Watched the video and I also have another on how to moisturize 🙌🏽
Your editing and videos are so professional i wanna get to your level!
Yaass!!! finally a routine for 4C that is simple and that gets to the point!!! Thank you!!! XOXO
You're so welcome! Thanks for watching x
These type of videos have really helped me with my daughter's hair. And you are gorgeous, love those styles you did
Your mini twist were beautiful 😍
Lee Ah thank yuh love! That’s actually the style I am rocking right now 😅
her hairstyles are so cute!!
Thank you x
For 8 years I have always started my routine by detangling my hair with Apple cider vinegar and water mixture, but I think I'm going to try the prepoo with oils. The thought of washing all those good oils out my hair is a little hard for me to grasp but I'll give it a try. Also I like how you keep your hair stretched during each routine, that should eliminate single strand knots.
I did the same years ago as well but I find the oils to be more moisturizing. I totally get washing the oils out, so that's why I use a simple oil like almond oil. Good luck and let me know how it goes! x
@@JennJackson Sure will, thank you.
Thank you ❤️
Katelynn Stan do it! Shave it off and embrace yourself girl, through the good and the bad. 😁its a long walk but you won’t regret it in a few years.
I totally agree with Tayler! it is such an amazing journey of self discovery!
#NewSubbie
A few of my take-aways are: 1. Pre-Poo 2. Deep Condition 3. A confirmation that what worked on my shorter hair will not work on my longer hair.
4. Detangling with fingers and low manipulation styles. 5. SECTION MY HAIR! Thank you, thank you!
Thanks for subbing! So happy you enjoyed the video! x
Loved this. This was amazing. Especially being adopted with 4c hair. Makes me wanna cry this makes me believe I can do it for once at 22
You can absolutely do this!!
Your hair has thrived beautifully 😍
Thank you!!
Your hair is soooooo LUXURIOUS
you and your hair are besties. me and mine... we be fighting in the shower lol.
LMAO!!! We use to fight all the time too but now we cool haha
I would suggest a prepoo with a leave in conditioner along with an oil. It softens the hair by the morning before your wash routine. After shampooing I would suggest condition and detangle with a moisturizing conditioner rinse then deep condition. Hope this helps some one if still struggling.
I just washed my hair this past weekend but I already cant wait to try this in a couple weeks!! Love this video🌺 Great job
Let me know how it goes!! x
@@JennJackson Girl definitely!!😄
I absolutely love this video I really do but man I just don’t have this kind of time :/
This is my routine too. However I wash my hair every other week. But I do remoisturize weekly using the LOC method. I don’t use conditioners either.. waste of time.. just go straight to deep conditioning. Great video. TFS!
That's great! I think as long as your have a routine, your hair will flourish! x
You inspired me to stay natural after watching your hair journey video
One of the best videos Ive seen in a Long time! Right to the point! Great pics and info...thank you!
Thank you so much!! More videos coming! x
Yes, finally 4c, that's exactly how I wash my hair. My hair type is exactly the same. Finally someone with the same hair type& actually 4c. Finally someone I 'm comfortable. I spent 6 months following someone just to find out they were 4a/4b. Thank you !
Ohhhhh my gosh those mini twists are sooooooo bomb on you!! You would look really nice with some sisterlocs also. My hair always fails with mini twists🤦🏾♀️
1st off, you are a black beauty! girl, thank you yes on the whole product thing, I just sick of peoples promos and you-better-use-this-for X hair. but yea, I'm so glad to see more women talking frankly about their 4c beautiful God-given hair. I'm gonna follow this routine cuz I know my hair will grow, I just don't care for it appropriately. #lazy #busy
Jenn I need a flat twist video loved those styles at the end of the video great video as usual
Coming soon! The video is up but the flat twist tutorial i need to film. :)
That sectioning is a good idea
great time saver!!
I use a hair lotion with a grease on top after I detangle
I approve this message: Moisturize (hair lotion) and seal (grease). Use what works for you x
Someone with hair just like I do love your hair routine will try
I do the prepoo with coconut oil overnight
and your hair must love you for it I am sure! x
This is why I wash my hair at the gym now. I don’t have to worry about the water bill, and sit in the steam room while conditioning my hair
I need to learn how to braid ❤️
RUclips girl! RUclips! x
All I see is HEALTH! Great video sis!
Thank you sis! x
This was well put together and exactly what I do to grow my hair...SUBSCRIBED!
Thank you love! x
THESE TIPS HAVE JUST SAVED ME NOW, I AM NEWLY NATURAL
Everyone with 4c hair instantly related to the, “This to this in 3 yrs,” comparison clips bc 🗣SAME
The way you say “dip” condition is cute and funny. Thanks for all the tips.
Hello Jenn. Thank you so much for making this video. I feel like I've finally found a role model on youtube and my hair can finally grow now. I'm Nigerian and I have very thick 4c hair and most times, I feel downcast because I put in so much and yet achieve very little but seeing your hair, those fears are all gone💝
You got this! Focus on the HOW and less on "miracle" products. x
😁 I shared my own tip too
Thanks for your infos❤❤❤❤
Thanks for sharing!! Amazing tips and I always say prepoo is IMPORTANT so I am glad that it works for you as well! x
My hair is so tangly and dry I've just learned to live with it now...
Merilynda Phiri no don’t admit defeat! Learn what it needs🙌🏽🙌🏽
This was my case...till I started detangling + pre-poo before washing, washing in twists and depp conditioning every 3-4 weeks, my 4c curls are defined now and super super soft. I'm still in awe
Try glycerin, aloe vera juice and rose water to moisturize your dry hair.
This video is so well put together and edited! Thanks for sharing your routine.
I would love to know tips on finding a moisturizer. What are your current top picks? And what steps did you take to figure out what worked for you?
Thank you! Will do! Great suggestion for a video! x
Thanks Jen I just found your channel. I wear allllot of protective styles now I’m ready to start really treating my hair… thanks for the tips
You are welcome 🙏🏽
Wow that was awesome! Clean and professionally done! Love your hair styles, I try to copy some on my own hair. I would love to see what type of hydrating products you use. I've just realized that most of my products are protein based. Hence my very dry and snapping hairstrands
Thank you so much!! and is your hair is protein sensitive, then it may not work out well for you. Try to add more moisturizing products! x
@@JennJackson Everything is a learning lesson. I started my transition 8/18. Best transition I ever made.
Representation matters, I’m so happy I finally found hair just like mine!!😍👏🏽❤️
Definitely ❤️
I section my hair into three parts into twists. I shampoo each part separately then twist it back and I do the same thing with conditioner, also after washing it, I apply dax indian hemp and wild growth hair oil. It works really well.
Your hair is so healthy I love your routine ❤️
Naturally Mati thank you love ❤️
Watching this video in 2023 and all I can say is.... We Thank God For Growth!!!! We were really wilding out here in these streets with the accidental 24 hour deep conditioning
Your hair is looong. Can't wait for mine to reach this length. How long have you had it for?
I've been growing my hair out for about 2 years now. I cut it in 2017 but have 5 haircuts before starting to grow it out
Great video! I have 4C hair, I totally agree with your routine.I decided to go natural 2 years ago, I have been doing pretty much the same steps and I am very satisfied with my results.
Thanks for sharing! I think these steps are great for healthy hair 🔥
Finally found content for hair EXACTLY like mine. Yay! 😂🌈
I like those multi colored glasses!
Thank you x
This was amazing! Now I need a video on each of those styles lol
You got it! The ones that are up I added links throughout the video x
Jenn Jackson oh sorry! Thanks!!
I really learned a lot from this video. Thanks for sharing! And you are REALLY awesome with styling your own natural hair. I wish!
you can do it as well. practice makes perfect x
Jenn!! I didn't know you had a RUclips channel. You probably don't remember me from Uni but that's okay lol. I really enjoyed this video as I have 4C hair (big chop status). Thanks for the tips honestly. I just subscribed and will definitely watch more of your videos!
I am a 4C girl and finally got a RUclipsr with 4C hair who is straight to the point thanks Jenn 🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗 i love your videos they are very helpful
I learned something in the first eleven seconds of this video.
Glad this video was helpful x
your hair is sooooo beautiful, oh my word
Thank you love x
