Physiological principles: what are they and what are they for?

  • I share the link of my channel. / @mauriciogiuliodori This introductory video to the Physiological Principles video series briefly defines physiological principles and describes their main applications. That is to say, it is shown what utility they have in the teaching-learning of physiology. The six physiological principles are: 1- the principle of balance or principle of mass or energy balance, which establishes that in an open system such as the organism, input and output (input and output) must be equated to keep the system in balance; 2- the control principle or control system that is made up of a sensor or receiver that monitors the variable of interest, a comparator center that contrasts what the sensor reports with the adjustment range, and an effector or controller that executes the action determined by the comparator center; 3- the principle of ligand-receptor specificity that establishes that each endogenous or exogenous ligand acts on its own or specific receptor that generates a specific cellular response; 4- the principle of elasticity that is based on Hooke's Law and that establishes that elastic bodies such as tissues rich in collagen and elastin have the ability to store elastic potential energy when deformed and deliver it as elastic kinetic energy when returning to its normal resting position; 5- the force-flow principle which is based on Ohm's Law, also called the pressure-flow principle which is based on Poiseuille's Law which states that the flow (of ions, blood or air) through a system is proportional to the gradient (difference) of potential and inversely proportional to its resistance; and 6- the principle of capacitance that establishes that the amount stored (of charges, blood or air) in a system (organ or tissue) is proportional to the capacitance and the gradient or potential difference. The following videos in the series describe each of these physiological principles and their main applications in detail.
