Disastrous Aircraft Descents | Aircrash Confidential Ep 2
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 16 май 2024
- In the rare circumstances where an aircraft pilot loses control of their planes' descent, the results can be among the worst disasters in aviation history. This episode explores why and how descents can sometimes go badly wrong.
In 1988 a plane air crash happened at a Air France airshow stunt. A Airbus 320-111 descended too low during a low fly-by and tragically killed three members of the public. Unfortunately dangerous descents don't only happen at airshows and this programme will also look at how uncontrolled descents during a commercial craft's runway landing, can have deadly consequences for everyone on board.
How on November 14th, 1970 a DC9 carrying the Marshall University Football Team was approaching to land at the airport in Huntington, West Virginia. But the aircraft doesn’t stop its descent at 1240 feet as instructed. And how on 20th December 1995 American Airlines Flight 965 crashes on its approach to Cali, Colombia.

To do a stunt like that with all those people on board is one of the stupidest things I’ve ever seen.
That is the first thought that crossed my mind especially with kids!
Yep
welcome to airfrance ahahah
Indeed. It serves no meaningful purpose and is essentially absolutely pointless. IF it MUST be done, there's zero case for it to happen with anyone or anything on board superfluous to the actual carrying out of said manoeuvre
Worse, to let a machine take precedence over a human being -- wrong.
My feeling about the Air France flight is that they never should have had passengers on a stunt flight, especially not children.
I wouldn't call it a stunt flight but definitely a demonstration flight with heightened risk. I agree though that there was no reason to take passengers on such a flight.
I believe it is now illegal to have passengers on these types of flight because of this incident
That father will likely never take any form of transportation ever again.
That 14 year old girl survive?
What a tragedy. Imagine surviving a car accident you mother passed away from only to die in a plane accident. The dad must be devastated.
You don't have to be the smartest guy in the world to be a pilot and you don't have to be superman to pass the physical but unfortunately, pilots can make mistakes and a grave mistake doesn't take stupidity.
that's what i thought too. what a sad and tragic fate 😕
as a disabled teen , the disabled teen being **left behind** makes me wanna sob and it also makes me indescribably angry. i'm not paralyzed , i probably could make it off , but the fact that the flight attendants and at least some of the other passengers **knew** he couldn't make it off on his own , and yet no one stopped to help him , not even the friend who was going with him , it's horrifying.
Disabled adult and had the same reaction, it breaks my heart. Especially knowing this is still standard practice for likes of building fires, if you’re wheelchair bound then you are to be left at a “safe point”….. and to wait, for someone to hopefully rescue you.
I use a walking cane, I could push myself and force myself down stairs to survive or the plane emergency chute, but it still angers and depresses me that we’re viewed as expendable and like our lives aren’t worth saving. He had his whole life ahead of him and nobody tried to rescue him.
Brother we don’t call disabled in India we call people like you Specially Abled..
When God takes something from you he gives more things in return love ❤ from India 🇮🇳.
Same. I’m a quad amputee. Knowing the few left behind were sort of overlooked broke my heart 🥺 Idk if you remember the flight that landed in the Hudson River a few years back, everyone made it off the plane. Capt Sully and all of the staff did an amazing job, one of the first evacuated was a disabled individual, and the staff stayed on until everyone was safely evacuated.
The airshow stunt was ridiculous to start with. Even if they were going to do it, they should've been familiar with the area and it should've been practiced with no passengers.
Just an FYI- It took years for him to prove it but the French Pilot was not at fault, it was actually the Plane! Any new 'Airplane Disaster'' type shows that discuss this flight have stated as much with the proof!
IMO a plane flying very slow and low isn’t all that visually appealing to me. It makes me think something bad is about to happen.
Time for a jolly good nap with this playing in the background.
air crash investigation was in need of a remastered version, its old but really good to watch
r.i.p to everyone on these planes
They sure stunned the audience by showing that the Airbus a320 serves just as well as a tree-chopping machine as an airplane! Who could have guessed?
Odd, it was stated the adult passenger on the airfrance crash actually didnt try to escape but rather tries to save the girl, resulting them in both trap as she fights the seatbelt....not running into the smoke
You are correct - wiki:
"Of 136 people on board, three did not escape. One was a disabled boy in seat 4F who was unable to move. Another was a girl in seat 8C, who was unable to remove her seatbelt (her younger brother had removed his own seatbelt but was carried away by the rush of people before he could help his sister). The third was a woman who had reached the front door and then returned to help the girl. Thirty-four passengers required hospitalisation for injuries and burns. Both pilots received minor head injuries and also suffered from smoke inhalation and shock."
@@pearldragon6508 Oh wow. In that case, this video was extremely inaccurate.
The A320 should have had no passengers on board. It was for all intentional purposes a test flight. Find it hard to believe a pilot with his experience wouldn't know he was to low by just looking out the window, if you can see the ground it beats any instrument.
Have you ever flown? It is unbelievably difficult to judge the distance to the ground from above...
I agree, even at that time the 1000 ft rule above the area was in effect. (VFR rules) In ground school for myself in the 80's that was pounded in... this pilot and airshow big wigs that wanted this stunt, deserved alot more than they got. They are a discrace. Did anyone think of perhaps a touch and go ? The whole stunt at this airshow makes no sense at all.
Intents and purposes, not intentional.
@@One-Ring-To-Rule-Them-All i fly lots.... you clearly dont.
The trouble with Ground Proximity Warnings is, not unlike a Covid RAT test, it tells you you’re buggered long after it’s too late to do anything about it. Once that warning starts screaming to ‘Pull Up’, it’s really asking ‘What Size Coffin Do You Desire’?
🤣🤣🤣 the last line though
Covid tests don't tell you anything.
Maybe problem of flight without any sight, can not expect a Plane to avoid everything countering Murphys law. Bad Logistics at play and risk of travel.
Kind of like those shots they wanted you to take.
With that erroneous belief l think you should pull up. G.P.W. devices have saved many aircraft from disaster, they just don't do reenactment shows about that.
Why isn't there English translation or subtitles when the French man is talking?
because you can understand well without it
Welcome to France, where they don't speak anything except French and ask you "don't you understand" in French lmao.
@Vishal Venkatachalam only problem is its in a show that is in english. Even in french movies when someone speaks a different language such as english or german, they at least get french subtitles. Silly universal systems
I was wondering the same thing. Otherwise a good show.
Same question 😅
anthony hopkins does a great job with the narration
You have to admire the Captain for risking his own life in staying and getting his badly injured First Officer, and very close friend, out of the aircraft.
He pulled a Homer... thats all. He deserves no credit at all. He is a disgrace as a pilot. The first officer is no better, they are both idiots. They broke VFR rules .. AND had passengers on board while doing it.
Not really. He should've prioritised his passengers, not his partner-in-crime.
Mercedes is very articulate ...I'm amazed that she survived but I see why. She is a special soul for others
They left out that the Air France flight computer thought the plane was landing not doing a low slow flyby...
I seem to remember such as well. Practically impossible to save the plane when you are not only fighting against the unexpected elements but also the plane acting differently than expected during the critical moment.
@@klaseronen7535 There's a reason it's called Scarebus.
A corrupt airbus also switch black box so they can blame the pilot for the crash. Nearly as dodgey a company as boeing but nobody is that bad
@@jasonmeehan1269 proof of your ridiculous assertion.
@@watchgooseThere’s a reason why boeing is worse kid
They lied. The software saw the low pass with gear down as a landing. There was no GO entered into the FMC so the plane did as it was programed and continued to land. No available thrust, no TOGO. Software, quick and simple as low level machine language, just didn't catch up till much later. God bless the 3 who died in the crash. It's a love/hate being an engineer.
It was despicably stupid and irresponsible to have that airplane full of people and even children????!!!!!!! Terrible.🤐🤐🤐
Incredibly brave of these actor's to re-create these air accidents, so few survive
The only thing that the relatives of those who have died in aircraft crashes can take from these horrific events is that changes are made to the aircraft industry, safety is improved and there are fewer accidents and fewer lives lost.
This egregous example of inanity is so idiotic l doubt any of the bereaved could take succour from any lesson given by that prevaricating A 320 pilot and his lack of contrition.
Well, this was human error and you cant fix stupid.
@@razor6888 Uninformed glib comment from a bumper sticker fan.
The best way to test a plane new or used fly it as normal without showing off the skies are dangerous enough.
The NTSB listed 2 probable causes for the Marshall crash. The first translates into “pilot error”, the second was a problem with the altimeter. Pilot error is the most frequent cause for plane crashes. It looked like both pilots were reading the instruments wrong, which NTSB considered highly improbable. Or were judging altitude by looking at the wrong instrument. NTSB could not pin it down. Horrible tragedy.

Excellent channel. Live long and prosper.👋
I've heard from somewhere else that the airbus went into flare mode thinking the pilots were landing it, therefore it was almost bringing itself to the runway. And caused it to hit the trees.
I'm from Huntington, wv the Marshall plane crash was a tragedy.. they put a memorial up by where the plane crashed and do a memorial thing every year at Marshall
If only I could speak French, this might be a bit more interesting…
Use the auto translation
Those trees likely saved many lives of the Air France demo flight by absorbing much of the plane's kinetic energy. Too bad there wasn't less fuel on it, the fire probably caused many of the deaths.
Any time I get on a plane the first thing I do is note the locations of the emergency exits and I count the rows to the closest one so I can find my way out without being able to see.
If you criminalize being part of an accident with "involuntary homicide" you now create a situation where people will do everything they can to hide information and avoid addressing it. The focus should be on not repeating the accident, not a witch hunt.
Seconded
The first thing I do is lay hands on the plane and ask God to bless the flight.
Those people sitting next to this kids couldn't help with undoing safety belt 🙄 😒 😐 🤔 😳
The documentary isn't entirely accurate. The adult passenger that died didn't just "run into the smoke", she died trying to save the little girl who was still buckled into her seat. Her brother had initially tried to go back and help her too but the crowd swept him up and pushed him out. The second kid that died was paralyzed from the waist down so he couldn't get up to walk away.
@@whyareyoulikethis2819so did the father who lost his wife to a car accident lose both of his children in this crash?
Pulling a stunt with all these passengers! Strong move!
So many young lives lost. Oh my God.
That John Cox is a right dose...
To me the Southern plane crash was due to lack of preventative maintenance because is very expensive 😢
Translation : When you see journalists on board you are proud plus that the plane is safe you're happy.
Don't see what you cannot understand.
The airbus pilot is found guilty of voluntary manslaughter but looking at his proud manner you could easily think that this guy is a hero and saved lives. This level of ignorance is one of the few reasons that I never get on a plane.
I am enjoying this new channel. These programs are better than Mayday. Mentour Pilot is very technical for when, in Petter's words "you want to gerk out on aviation videos". This channel presents the human elements without the unnecessary drama and dragging out the story like Mayday.
I have watched a ton of these investigations and it seems to me that the French pilots are never at fault, no matter what the investigations discover,
But the African pilots are at fault 100% of the time
Except AF447

Or one of the links in the chain?
So on the Air France the paralyzed kid's father and best friend just ran away and left him?! WTF?!
No passenger aboard was qualified, trained, ready, prepared, or accepted being a stunt pilot.
Whose idea was to bring 100+ people onboard the plane to perform the stunt? That too children and differently abled?
Funny how when I watched the French version of the same episode there are French subtitles for the interviews of English speakers….
Mtl triste acidentes
Acidentes faltou. Mais. Atenção
If its a Boeing I aint going; if its an Airbus there is less fuss, but with no margin for error I'd rather walk than face the Terror...
I think walking is probably the safest form of transportation.
…until your life is tragically cut short by the plane falling out of the sky onto your head as you stroll down the road 😮
Unfortunately not, not in towns and cities. Thanks to auto manufacturers and drivers externalizing their risks, building the occupants a safety cocoon, it is far riskier to walk for everyday transportation than to drive. Flying airlines is by far less risky than driving (but not private planes, which are more risky)
Unless you are walking on a runway.
@@tescheurich That's mostly by miles travelled, the stats shift a bit (but are still heavily in air's favour) if you look at people driving motorways. And if you look at bus/train crashes things look even less favourable. It's all about how you measure the travel.
@@marcdraco2189 This is true, and not too long ago by some measures cars were safer. But since about 2000, the safety has reached incredible levels. Just take the US. Excluding the regionals, there's been only a single death on US airliners since 2001. Not even driving a single mile in a car in this period could match that safety. My best guess is driving just 50 feet = the fatality risk per flight in this period.
well ,in America we use dummies for tests, "I think that is a good thing" lol
An incorrect altimeter setting from the ground station could lead to this happening but more likely its showoff by the captain.
Computer malfunction has caused accidents.
I was in Huntington for little we visited the Marshall plane crash site they no tree grew back the people that was alive back then said you could smell burnt flesh and stuff i,m so heart broken for those people i went too marshall stadium too before the picture of the team in there i think there names are on it

No one thought to take the children when running for their lives. I understand that you're scared, but could you imagine the thoughts of those poor kids.
I agree that there should be translation
Did they say... Fly By Fire ? I couldn't hear...had my sunglasses on.
I enjoy watching these shows to learn about history. This one's nicely done but there's two mistakes in the Marshall crash section (among other problems in the rest of the show). One, they mistakenly say the plane took off from Huntington not North Carolina. Two, that map of the route was absolutely wrong. The end point is on the Virginia/Maryland border. Huntington is on the West Virginia/Ohio border. Completely wrong state there. I am a West Virginian, no West Virginian appreciates being mistaken for Virginia, no offense to Virginia.
Well not to mention that looked nothing like a DC-9 cabin.
Very arrogant

The scene at 36:16 seems to be borrowed from the movie "Fearless". I think I recognize it
Not even a simple 40 miles per hour is impossible to survive an impact 40:00
Too little too late ,apart from the wrong initial instr. given ,the computers on board should “know”that when full pull up is applied then all air brakes should auto be cancelled giving auto more lift to a struggling aircraft to gain height and thrust ,air brakes should be automatically cancelled Victor
So the French chairman couldn’t be on his fabulous plane ? And nobody unbuckled the child who was seated next to them?
There is no such a thing as safe equipment, transportation mean or whatever. As long as humans design, build and operate a machine accidents will happen.
Good episode. Shame no one translated from French.😪
Boy, it sounds like you certainly took your life into your hands when you flew in an airplane and in the early 1970s! Airline technology was so primitive!
Yea! How come.

I just do not agree charging pilots with the death of passengers, unless they find irrefutable evidence of a murder/suicide plot by one of the pilots. Why don't they address the several weaknesses in the fuselage to make the plane crash more survivable? Pilots need some kind of protection, like airbags, just because there's nothing between them and the console!
Yes totally agree god love that pilot who was speaking I know he meant no harm but I'd still say he feels guilt everyday, yes they should have some protection

The unmitigated arrogance.
First, deciding to do a stunt.
Then, having passengers in the plane.

Wonder of night flight, dont do it in mountain areas.

This documentary is showing totally different result of air france crash by blaming the pilots but actually it was airbus fault...pilots had to fight for this and later on airbus did admit its fault...they changed some software in new design due to which when pilots pushed the throtlle to climb it didn't act quickly but there was a delayed response due to which they crashed
Airbus tried its best to put the blame on pilots but later on pilots won...there are other documentaries available on RUclips showing that..
I am surprised nobody in comment section has pointed that and how come this documentary not showing the correct reason 🤔

When u sit nearby a child ( Ariana ) and she sat at the center aisle that adult person had to step over her to escape how in the world can instep over an 8 year old child in any evacuation !?!? Wouldn‘t it be normal to take her with u it costs 2 seconds of time and in this case they could all escape then it was not like the airplane was inside ingolfed in flames already 😢
