The pianist is Anthony Burger who, unfortunately, passed away at the very young age of 44 years old when suffered a massive heart attack after a performance with the Gaither Vocal Band on one of their cruises in 2006. Interestingly, he was severely burned as a child and his parents were told he may never use his hands!! If you enjoyed his playing here, you should look up his video when he played the Hallelujah chorus at a Gaither Vocal Band performance in Australia. David used to be with the Gaither Vocal Band, but as a solo artist is a multi-genre artist, writes songs, sings quite a few opera arias in his concerts--Nessun Dorma, O Mio Babino Caro, Una Furtiva Lagrima, etc., as well as Southern Gospel, contemporary Christian, blue grass, has covers for Bridge Over Troubled Water, You're the Voice, I've Got Nothing, etc. There seems to be no end to his talent. I've seen him in person 3 times, and it is an electric experience, and in talking with him, he is as down to earth and friendly as can be. Another of his songs to react to is We Shall Behold Him, which was part of a live performance on his own property in a large that he has converted into a concert venue. He has 2 or 3 gatherings there every year called Barn Bashes. His other Christmas songs are second to none!
Great reaction video. David Phelps is the G.O.A.T. I heard you mention, "He sounds like a baritone." I have read many articles stating, "Vocal coaches have confirmed he has the vocal chords of a baritone." This is the reason why his belted notes are so full, powerful & resonant. Absolutely brilliant man, yet so humble. He did a cover of Whitneys song, "I have nothing." He puts his own little spin on the cover, and it's truly a masterpiece. I have read many articles that state, "David phelps was Whitneys favorite tenor." He is one of the best.
Jump on down the David Phelps rabbit hole! He is phenomenal… even now at 55! Nessun Dorma, Fly Away, dead man rising & water duet with his daughter! I loved your reaction and professional breakdown!
When you said this is one of the best renditions you’ve heard…and you hadn’t even gotten to the good parts…I KNEW I was in for an amazing reaction! Haha. Loved it! 🤙🏼 PLENTY of David Phelps’s content to react to! Just follow the comments here and you can’t go wrong! Merry Christmas!
"THANK YOU SO MUCH!" David Phelps has a recent version of Whitney Houston's "I HAVE NOTHING." Whitney was reported to say that David Phelps was HER favorite singer! (Pretty high praise!!) ALSO, after 9/11 happened "The Gaither Vocal Group" assembled a "live" Concert at this same auditorium. David Phelps was part of this group in "LET FREEDOM RING!" As a music critic and a Vocal analyst you should enjoy all the male voices including Mr. Phelps's!! THANX!! From the State of Minnesota U.S.A.
I subscribed as soon as you mentioned the crescendo and decrescendo of divine. It is such a moment of this rendition that I love and nobody that I have reacted to made note of it
Welcome to David Phelps! Great reaction. Hope you do more of him, he is a true vocal master. There's so many great performances of his that are just incredible. No More Night, The Dream, We Shall Behold Him, Let Freedom Ring (with GVB), I Have Nothing... enjoy!
The End of the Beginning, also which David wrote the lyrics, music and arranged is also PHANTASTIC. One of my favorite songs he performs. You'll find that David is a "stylist". His own explanation of his work. He doesn't limit himself to just one genre. He will take a popular song and rearrange it just enough to put his Phelps magic into it. I say he "Phelpsed a song. " He loves to put a run here and there and is famous for his big belts and can hold a note for a whole day. His Phans wonder among ourselves if the Lord didn't give him 3 lungs instead of 2. LOL! You'll find tens of thousands of Phans and we're loyal. Thank you for your phantastic reaction to my favorite musician and the best tenor in the world today. I enjoyed your reaction thoroughly and look forward to your next David Phelps reaction.
David trained in opera performance at Baylor University in Texas. He had to make a decision to continue into opera or turn to gospel music and he chose the latter. That "choir" behind him contains some of the best (past and present) gospel singers in the world. Bill and Gloria Gaither gathered them together about the time of this video (filmed at the Birmingham Auditorium in Alabama) and have produced many of these "Homecoming" videos over the years. Bill and Gloria have written over 700 songs, including some of the most famous and beloved gospel tunes. They have 8 Grammys, over 40 Dove Awards (gospel music's Grammys), and have been named Songwriters of the Year 8 times. Fairly recently, David covered Whitney Houston's "I Have Nothing" beautifully with only piano and cello accompaniment. It is worth watching even if you don't review it. 😊
You've just been introduced to the greatest male vocalist in the world! This is the best rendition of Oh Holy Night by far. He felt every word he was singing. Perfection. 👌
I have Nothing is from 3 years ago. Released this year is Somewhere from West Side Story. He also has several outstanding opera songs. Thank you❤. And welcome to David Phelps.
He is Classically trained. And the pianist was one of the best in the world. At 5 years old he burned his hands and was told he'd never be able to do anything with them. But he was a child prodigy. He was the great Anthony Burger. He had a massive heart attack on stage and died in his early 40's.
David's wrote a song about 20 years that was one of his biggest successes, it's called Heaven's Shore, get the live version, it's beyond wonderful !!!!!
I thoroughly enjoyed your reaction and comments regarding David. He was classically trained at Baylor University in Waco Texas. Several others have already mentioned multiple other songs to consider, all of which I agree with. I look forward to you reacting to more of his work.
If you want to continue exploring vocal performances by David Phelps here are a few recommendations: I Have Nothing (Whitney Houston Cover), Gentle Savior, Heaven's Shore, End of The Beginning, No More Night, Nessun Dorma. Those are all solo tracks. If you want to hear him as a part of the Gaither Vocal Band check out these: These are They, It is Finished, Let Freedom Ring.
I appreciated your reaction to David and this song. Yes, you nailed it! He has classical training and is truly gifted and annointed by God! You will never be disappointed as you begin to discover more about him! He has so many incredible songs!! One of my favorites he wrote is "End of the Beginning". But it doesn't matter which song you choose, he will leave you speechless, with goosebumps over and over again! Welcome to the journey!💜🎶💜
Great reaction, loved your reaction when he hit that money note towards the end! David studied voice at Baylor University, his teachers tried to dissuade him from pursing gospel music and a more classical or opera career path.
I have seen David 11 times from the front row and have followed him for the past 30 years as well. I have met him and his family several time and been to his home twice for Barn Bash events...in my opinion he is the best male vocalist in the world today and has been for the past 25 to 30 years.
It's an old video but David's voice I think has only gotten better. Here's a song he arranged, Fall on Your Knees. It's totally different than what you think with Charlotte Ritchie. I love it so.ruclips.net/video/seMRgYiT6ak/видео.htmlsi=fjhqVjzGHM2uWNCf
Yes, David is classically trained and still performs some opera selections (Nessum Dorma, Una Furtiva Lagrima, O Mio Babino Caro...) but he likes performing and arranging most genres. The distinctive arrangement here is the key change for the second verse. This change puts his final note up to a C#5! I've seen a 'comparison video' of several great performer (including Pavoratti) and David is at the end. He did a series with New York Vocal Coaching covering and discussing several vocal techniques. You would truly enjoy checking out more of David Phelps. There are some other great suggestions in the other comments!
Great analysis. I can suggest a few more of my favorites from David Phelps. While he is mostly on the Gospel circuit, he did do what is considered the difficult “Whitney Houston Song” entitled "I Have Nothing" here: ruclips.net/video/h5b39F-9458/видео.html For other religious/Gospel songs, I would suggest the following: No More Night (live): ruclips.net/video/4iPIi7sunEU/видео.html The End of the Beginning (live at Carnegie Hall): ruclips.net/video/LrhSjP5988E/видео.html He is accompanied with his (then) fourteen year-old daughter, Maggie, in performing Angus Dei (Lamb of God) live here: ruclips.net/video/CIrhABg0QgQ/видео.html He is again accompanied then seventeen year-old daughter, Maggie, in a play-in-a-song (live) called “Water”. It is the story in John’s Gospel, chapter 4, of the woman at the well: ruclips.net/video/cPcg-SBsOnY/видео.html All of these are incredibly amazing.
David is an incredible talent and was part of the Gaither Gospel group. They attracted top-notch singers, all of whom are worth looking at. As this is one of the best renditions of this Christmas hymn, his fellow Gaither singer, Mark Lowry does the best rendition of "Mary Did You Know" with the a capella group Voctave. Mark is the author of the lyrics, with the music composed by another Gaither singer Buddy Greene. In this video, Mark (who also has some comedy videos) is sitting down because he has multiple sclerosis and his legs dont always work well. ruclips.net/video/uaRpeMT1tjQ/видео.htmlsi=rHp8YII-6bBbe2eo
Agree with all of the comments about David. I have been following him since the late 1990’s & Bill Gaither’s Homecoming concerts since 1995. I have seen David in person for a TBN taping & at a Gaither concert. I haven’t met David, but I have met Bill Gaither (in 2011). David’s No More Night is spectacular & his rendition of Nessun Dorma is beautiful. He was trained in the Bel Canto style & his degree is in Music & Music Performance. At 55 he is still going strong. Have always loved David! A very sweet person, too. Anthony was also a virtuoso. He passed away in Feb. 2006. Bill knew he could never replace Anthony. Anthony’s Rhapsody in Blue is gorgeous!
Thanks for checking out David, he's the best!! You must watch "No More Night" so you can hear the best sustained note in music history, as he finishes off that song like only he can, !!
Loved your reaction. I suggest David's cover of Whitney Houston's "I Have Nothing" released a few years ago. Also Let Freedom Ring is also one of David's best when he sings with a group (and the harmonies!)
After scrolling through the comments, i agree with the many song suggestions. I just subscribed and enjoyed your comments regarding David's performance. Besides the songs already suggested, may i add "He's Alive", "Ave Maria/The Lord's Prayer", "Just As I Am", and "Heaven's Shore". Thank you, and i look forward to more David Phelps reactions.
Listen to David's video of Battle Hymn of the Republic. It will set you free. Yes, this arrangement of O Holy Night is the best you will ever hear. His voice is generational.
David Phelps isn't a baritone, he is a lyric tenor. Listen to other songs he has sang, and you will agree with me. Dude can hit a D5 with ease. He went to Baylor University, and I believe he has a master's in music. He is a trained classical singer, who is called by God to sing Gospel music.
I recommend you listen to HIDE THOU ME by the Gaither Vocal band, David is the tenor of the group, and he sings the whole song himself. You want to see what breath control is, listen to this. I'll sub to see your reaction :)
Wonderful reaction! Please also react to some of the amazing Anthony Burger's piano performances: ruclips.net/video/SRKWeeLUWlw/видео.html ruclips.net/video/Pv3pOP2GkKM/видео.html ruclips.net/video/P8xJFRQD4tM/видео.html You will be equally amazed at Anthony Burger on the piano as you were at David Phelps with his voice!
David is God's gift to the world. Please look at his The End of the Beginning and No More Night. He is truly amazing. His voice is only one factor. You also have to understand that he completely believes what he's singing and his music is that much more effective due to his faith and sincerity.
PLEASE also show this LIVE performance Music Video by: Sandy Parker singing- A Baby Changes Everything. (The people sitting behind David as he sings are The Gaither Homecoming Friends and Sandy Parker has a connection to The Gaither Homecoming Friends, she married Ivan Parker’s son. One of many of Ivan Parker songs is- Midnight Cry (Live). I hope that some of you actually do watch the LIVE performance Music Video by Sandy Parker!!
Overdone, over-hyped Six-Flags-over-Jesus tripe. When the "money notes" detract from the calm, serene reverence of the liturgical function of the hymn, it is only an ego being worshipped.
I love watching people react to David for the first time. He truly is amazing.
You'll enjoy the rabbit hole that is David Phelps.
Hands down best version of O Holy Night!! 🙌 great reaction!!
The pianist was Anthony Burger, who passed away several years ago. Yes, David's anointing is serious.
Let Freedom Ring live at Carnegie Hall is one of my favorites
Welcome to the phantastic world of David Phelps. He is amazing and truly authentic human being.Shalom Shalom!
He sings everything flawlessly.

David is anointed by God. He uses his talent to praise our Lord. You need to react to No More Night and Let Freedom Ring.

I saw David in concert recently. At 55 he is still going strong! Love your vocal analysis!😊

David Phelps, in my opinion, is the best male vocalist on the planet.
I think the best live performance ever recorded

Welcome to, what we David Phelps fans call, The Green Sweater David Christmas!!!!
David's wrote a song about 20 years that was one of his biggest successes, it's called Heaven's Shore, get the live version, it's beyond wonderful !!!!!
David wrote " Heaven's Shore" after his sister passed away. I think it's from his "Freedom Concert"

This can certainly be called total mastery of your instrument! Both gentlemen! Sadly, Anthony passed away a few years ago. Our loss for sure!
Great reaction, loved your reaction when he hit that money note towards the end! David studied voice at Baylor University, his teachers tried to dissuade him from pursing gospel music and a more classical or opera career path.
My Dad’s best man was in choir with David.
Great reaction to David Phelps I really enjoyed it. I highly recommend David Phelps version of Whitney Houston's I have nothing from about 3 years ago
I have seen David 11 times from the front row and have followed him for the past 30 years as well. I have met him and his family several time and been to his home twice for Barn Bash events...in my opinion he is the best male vocalist in the world today and has been for the past 25 to 30 years.
You need to check out, "I Have Nothing", "°°The End of the Beginning", and "Nessun Dorma!"
Su voz debería ser conocida por este mundo y su mensaje hermoso al cantar!!!

Cover of Whitney Houston’s “I Have Nothing”

David Phelps the best Tenor no one hits like he did😅
❤
Great reaction! You might also check out his cover of I Have Nothing by Whitney Houston. It’s amazing. 🤩
Listen to a song he wrote, " Fly again". Beautiful song with a lot of meaning.

Read Anthony Berger’s bio. Anointed by God
David Phelps is singing to AND for The Lord Jesus Christ HIMSELF.
David is God's gift to the world. Please look at his The End of the Beginning and No More Night. He is truly amazing. His voice is only one factor. You also have to understand that he completely believes what he's singing and his music is that much more effective due to his faith and sincerity.

There is NO better version of this song. David Phelps and Anthony left all else behind.
Great reaction video! I suggest, on a secular level, check out “I have nothing “
So now who has the best vocal in the world Carl, David Phelps or Dimash Qudaibergen?
You’ve heard nothing of David yet. Easily thought to be the best tenor on the planet.
Salutări din România! Poate ați dori să o ascultați și pe cântăreața româno americană Laura Bretan cântând acest cântec 😊🙋🇷🇴👍
He’s a tenor.
Could you react to sidnie christmas also singing o holy night sidnie won BGT earlier this year it is amazing youll find it on her album called my way
Pause your pauses please. You're stopping greatness, to a fault. Lol. More please. David is the greatest male voice on earth
David Phelps is amazing, but I prefer Josh Groban, his voice is so clear and pure.
