Respectfully, I don’t consider this a “reaction” - rather, I see this as a critique. And I’m sad that you can be so detached from the music, message and conviction that you miss it touching your soul. David is not performing - he’s testifying. 🙌🏼

@@runningheartnurse exactly! This song is all about the emotion. I’m not even a Christian or religious and this rendition brings me to tears every time. This was the most disappointing “reaction” I’ve ever seen of this 😕

I like the breath choices. It added a dramatic storytelling that is atypical of the conventional. It says nothing of what he can do, but what he chose to do. I dig it.

Breath control is so low on the totem pole. David's performance is not only full of world class skill, it is full of worship and praise to our heavenly Father. This song of worship is not just a performance but a full hearted and expressive PRAISE and celebration. David's ability to convey that passion is what makes him so special. You can tell he believes every word.

I can't claim to know the first thing about music theory, nor can I assess a performer's technical merits, but I do know, having walked this earth for seven decades, that there is no other performer whose version of this song has caused even grown men to weep. If his style is not up to some academic standard, it matters not. David Phelps is an artist whose unique musical expression of O Holy Night evokes an emotional/spiritual reaction from deep within the listener.

In my 50 years of singing I have come to understand that people have different techniques, preferences and choices when delivering a song. I have also learned that all of those things as important as they are, are nothing compared to real passion. David Phelps brings that to every song he performs. He will be the first to tell you that his passion is not his own, but comes from his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. There is nothing that any of us can do were it not for the grace of God. David knows that.

David studied classical music at Baylor University and his teacher encouraged him to pursue classical music. He however, chose to sing Christian music. While his focus is on Christian music, he does sing classical, gospel and pop as well. He arranges a lot of the music, writes songs and considers himself a stylist. I had the privilege of seeing him in person, and he is phenomenal! He is the best male tenor and my favorite vocalist.

I honestly think David chose his breaths for dramatic effect. You can obviously see throughout that breath control is something he has mastered and has full authority of.. so I am sure it was done with intention. Thanks for the review, he is a male vocal Titan!

I’m not going to criticize you like a bunch of others have. It’s just your taste in music. But I will say the old man you were pointing out in the background is the late George Younce who is arguably one of the best base singers in history (no cap).

    Creative choice.
I felt the same about the early phrasing.
However, I will defer to the genius that is David Phelps.
He had his reasons. It was choice, not nerves.

Nerves? The guy is a pro's pro. Try reacting to his "Most High Resonate Notes" and you'll see. I don't think it's always about the technique or breath choices, but more about conveying the weight of the words and meaning of the song. Afterall, it is about God coming down from Heaven as an infant Jesus.

Everything David does is intentional, but often it's his emotional attachment to what he us singing. Andthis is from a Gaither Homecoming special. Bill and Gloria Gaither are the authority in Christian and gospel music for the last several decades. The folks in the background are all orwere huge names in the industry. Do some research on the genre and the choices will make sense. You are reviewing from a clinical viewpoint where the genre us about feeling and feeling the holy spirit. He is classically trained and could have been an opera singer but followed God's voice to gospel music and believers and non believers have been blessed. Knowledge is power and these people command respect for what they do but they would never ask or demand it. They do it as a missionand blessing to others.

Why? Interpretive licence. Simple. Emotion. Making it his own. Why...should he be confined to doing what every other singer must do for lack of ability to be creative? Best EVER interpretation and delivery of this not so easy Christmas song. Technique is not interpretation. Technique enables interpretation.
    Happy New Year to you.

Carrissa, I appreciate your technical ability to react to Davids training. This is a live recording from the year 2000. If you continue to react to his singing, you are in for a treat. He has performed so many great pieces of music and is still performing at a super high level today. Many consider him to be one of the greatest tenor voices on Earth.
Although his main focus is Contemporary Christian Music, He does do some Operatic Pieces and Pop genres too. You might be impressed with his Cover of Whitney Houston's "I HAVE NOTHING", and the Righteous Brother's "UNCHAINED MELODY"

David Phelps is a Classical musician and he got started because of Bill and Gloria Gaither. All glory gets given to God when he gets done singing. He will point his finger to God which proves his humility and humble. I don’t necessarily agree with you with what you said but I like David Phelps and Wes Hampton singing this song.

Just know that your immediate criticism of David Phelps's breathing, without knowing OF him, will not set real well with many listeners because they know of David's abilities and know of many of his performances. This is the only song delivered by David in this manner, but realize that with his vast experience and expertise, he PURPOSELY stretched everything out to gain emphasis!! It was pretty unusual to hear the first time, but with subsequent listenings the continuity of it sets in! I believe David's strong faith in God and the holiness of this song led him to basically sing EVERY WORD with singular emphasis, thus leading to all the additional breaths taken so as to isolate each word for its full meaning - EVERY WORD!!! I hope you will listen a few more times and see if you understand what I am trying to say. If you really like the quality of David Phelps's singing, you may want to try his cover of Whitney Houston's "I Have Nothing." : ruclips.net/video/h5b39F-9458/видео.html. or another would be his "Nessun Dorma": ruclips.net/video/pVSR4rIfBOk/видео.html. I'll look forward to your reaction to either of those! I know you'll want to sample another example of his high excellence! Then try "Mary, Did You Know" sung by David's friend and the lyrics writer Mark Lowry singing along with Voctave (ruclips.net/video/uaRpeMT1tjQ/видео.html), the excellent acapella group! Mark puts a special touch to his song and is himself an excellent vocalist!

Though David is a trained singer, and has been singing for many years, he does incorporate different styles and genres at times because, I would say for him, the correct musical choices that some classical singers might make or some rock/pop singers might make automatically are not used by him because this is not classical or pop music but rather Southern Gospel style music and hanging on a word or breathing before the last word has a cause and effect type of reaction and I assure you is done on purpose by him. Can he do it for your taste? Yes, most certainly he can and does at times...but he does not put himself in a box for the sake of classical correctness. The one thing that I like about different styles and genres of music is that we do if fact have the ability to cross over and change things to suit ourselves as singers and musicians and know that just as there will be folks that disagree with our choices, there will also be those that will love those same choices. Now, I respect you opinion and what would be your choices...I'm just glad that on this song...he didn't make them. Otherwise you did very well young lady, very well indeed!
