@JenniferGlatzhofer , please do a react (& Analysis) to Kurt Hugo Schneider "TWENTY ØNE PILØTS MASHUP!! - ACAPELLA ft. VoicePlay"
Jussi Bjorling tenor version sung in Swedish is also very impressive and highly recommended
You should do his I'm alive
Oh and Mary did you know by Mark Lowry
One of the best live performances across any genre of music ever
In my opinion, the best version of the most beautiful song ever written.
100%
Siempre......!!!!!!! ❤❤❤❤
One of the best vocal performances across any genre of music ever
It’s the best version of this song but it’s not even the best Christmas song. Baby It’s Cold Outside called.
Celine is best.
This is like my favourite tenor performance on the planet!!! So glad you reacted to it 😍
I am too!! Just so moving 😍
The pianist is Anthony Berger, who started his career as pianist for a Southern Gospel quartet and became the pianist of choice for the Gaither Homecoming concerts, which pulled together powerhouse artists in the Southern Gospel field. Anthony was famous for his improvisational style and ability to follow an artist's interpretation in the moment, while still able to keep large groups of singers on the beat in full-choral numbers. Those are the folks behind David on stage. Sadly, Anthony passed away at a fairly early age. At this stage in David's career, Anthony was probably the better known of the two, and this is really a collaboration. Also, on a side note: the guy behind David in the dark suit with a red shirt who kind of stomps all excitedly right after the group stands up is Mark Lowry, longtime baritone of The Gaither Vocal Band, Christian comedian, and writer of the lyrics of "Mary, Did You Know?" If you have not watched Mark do that song with Voctave, I would highly recommend it! As for David, please consider reacting to the Gaither Vocal Band's performance of "Let Freedom Ring" at their 9-11 first responders tribute concert at Carnegie Hall, in which David is featured. The song was written with David in mind, and in all the GVB's iterations, they have never performed it without David. It is a tour de force.
There are also a lot of talented people on the stage behind David.
Second the motion on "Mary, Did You Know?" and "Let Freedom Ring"!
I believe it is Burger.
@@paulrobinson3213 I believe you are correct
@@nelsonhemstreet3568 Regardless, he was a great. Take care my friend and have a good one!!!!
I cannot listen to this without full body chills almost the entire time. His voice is just amazing
He has so much passion in his voice. I adore this song. He does it justice.
David is perfection. Still stunning 23 years later. Thank you for your analysis. Merry Christmas
Thank you😁
David Phelps is 53 now and still crushing it
David Phelps is of another world. He has one of the best tenor voices of all time. My favorites of his song are "the end of the beginning " and "let the glory come down." Just amazing.
David is the greatest tenor on earth..God has so blessed him & given us a heavenly gift. Praise the Lord.
You can just tell, it's soooo obvious, he BELIEVES with all his heart the words he's singing, he's not just going through the motions.....it makes a HUGE difference. My favorite tenore over Austrin Brown of Home Free
Thank you for reacting to David Phelps! He’s my favorite singer. I’ve been to many of his concerts . He’s 52 years old now and recently recorded Whitney Houston’s “I Have Nothing”. I hope you’ll consider reacting to it, you won’t be disappointed.
I listen to a lot of ppl on RUclips critiquing Phelps. Yours was the best and most genuine. I get as excited as you. He is a once in a lifetime singer.
I waited for you to respond to me, with a comment. 🤔
WITHOUT a doubt the finest voice in music. No one is close--in my untalented opinion.
It's so fun to watch singers react to this version from David. He makes it "look" so easy, but this is a masterclass in live singing. He's got it all.
This concert was 21 years ago. He’s 53 now and just as amazing, if not more amazing. Just saw him in concert twice and he’s just fabulous. There are volumes of videos on RUclips of his time with Gaither Vocal Band and his solo stuff but if you want to hear something recent (last year) to hear for yourself how extraordinary he still is, here’s his Whitney cover I Have Nothing. ruclips.net/video/h5b39F-9458/видео.html
I Have Nothing is amazing! Would love for Jennifer to react to that one!
I’m a huge David Phelps Phan and we have always referred to times like this that he is “pulling out his 3rd lung” for that note! Nobody in my humble opinion can sing this song better than David. He owns it, period. Also, his humbleness is so apparent and I love how he nods to Anthony, thanking him for accompanying him. Thanks for doing this!!
Yes! I was hoping someone in the vocal coach community would review more of David Phelps! Seems like a crazy good singer
Amazing😁
If the quality of his voice and the majesty of that song doesn't bring you to tears ... ... you'd better check yourself for a heartbeat.
He's such an amazing singer! I have always loved listening to him.
It's always a joy to watch your reactions and analyses. Anyone can tell how much you enjoy this. And you make us enjoy the same way, too.
OH! Thank you!! Thank you! Thank you!
The best live vocal performance I’ve ever heard.
Along with David Phelps the choir is composed of some of the greatest singers. The guy behind him is Mark Lowery the person that wrote Mary Did You Know. Mark Lowery is David's good friend and fellow Gaither Vocal Band member
Mark is also the one that "discovered " David and brought him to Bill Gaither. 😊
As a fellow Texan, we're all proud of our David Phelps!!!!!
David Phelps is the greatest male voice on planet Earth. ! More please
I’ve been looking forward to this one, but did not expect it on a Friday. 😊 What a nice surprise!
“O Holy Night” may be my favorite Christmas hymn. It’s such a beautifully written song on every level. “Chains shall He break for the slave is our brother!” “Truly He taught us to LOVE ONE ANOTHER!”
It’s just a challenge to me in song form. But this performance, by this man, is an experience. What a gift David has and it feels like he is humble and knows it’s a gift, not something for which he expects exaltation.
Thank you for breaking this one down. We can see that you were as amazed as the rest of us.
Couple of interesting notes: The man behind David who is wearing a black suit with a red shirt (gets very into it, too) is Mark Lowry who wrote the popular Christmas song “Mary Did You Know”. Also, if you look to the right of David, there is a woman in a teal outfit. On her right, I believe, is Vestal Goodman. You heard her name when Leslie Jordan said ‘Where’s Vestal when you need her?”
Oh that’s a lovely bit of background knowledge!! Thank you 😁 such a great performance!
You should check him out singing No More Night and also his version of I Have Nothing.
Yes! I suggested "I Have Nothing" also.
Seen lots of reactions for this performance. Best analysis Ive seen. Thank you.
If you haven't seen it, Voctave has an amazing version of Mary, Did You Know? Featuring Mark Lowry as the soloist (he wrote the lyrics)
He is being accompanied by Anthony Burger, an amazing pianist who can do things with the piano like David does with his voice. The combination is almost explosive with how powerful they make the song. Wow!!!
Yup. And I believe Anthony Burger passed away tragically at the age of 47 from Leukemia.
He makes me want to believe.
Great to see your reaction, even though you have seen it multiple times. I just cannot get enough of this performance by such a passionate singer and Christian. Loved your reaction and remarks. God bless!
Well done and good choice, Jen. Thanks!
Do you know he’s classically trained? You should listen to more of his songs-he’s perfection!
Wonderful analysis. As a musician who sings but far from being a singer, it's great to hear detail of how vocalists dig in to all the effects of resonance.
I have been waiting to see if you had ever heard this. He just uploaded Oh Come Emmanuel which sounds amazing
Jennifer, so glad you reacted to this one, I’ve been using it for my voice class. Your breakdown means a lot. I can’t do the last verse so I drop the octave! David has certainly been given a gift which he has worked hard on! Thanks low bass Kenneth!
Ah thanks so much!
We lost Anthony Berger several years ago when he had a massive heart attack playing the piano on a cruise. So what you heard again was definitely truly special! God bless! Kenneth
David just recently posted his version of "O Come, O Come Emanuel//The Singer (Let There Be Light) from O Holy Night. He can still bring it! You should check it out!
He finishes with a couple of C#5's, I'm impressed!.
David Phelps has been a favorite of mine for many years. As usual, listening with you, and hearing your analysis has added a whole new level of appreciation for David's gift. I have contemplated giving you a couple of suggestions of my favorite songs of his to consider for analysis. Maybe I will do that sometime. And by the way, there are several amazing singers in that choir. This is a wonderful group of Southern Gospel groups and individual singers brought together by Bill and Gloira Gaither, who have done many "Homecoming" video compilations all over the world. One of my longtime friends has directed a few of them. The Gaither's are based in a small town about 10 miles from me, so I have been exposed to this genre for most of my adult life. May God Bless richly bless you and Merry Christmas.
Thank you! Merry Christmas 😊
Awesome reaction and breakdown of one of the greatest male vocalists of all time! You were spot on that he is always on point with his connection and dynamics... he is like that every time he sings. I try to tell everyone to go hear him in person at least once, it's an unreal experience... because it's EVERY song. He's always so genuine and powerful. You should do more reactions of him. There's no shortage of incredible live performances to choose from... No More Night, We Shall Behold Him, The Dream, I Have Nothing (cover of Whitney Houston, where he casually pops a D5 at age 53)... he also has lots of Christmas songs... O Come Emanuel, Joy, One Wintry Night... hope to see you do another!
Thank you. This is a favorite of mine, and your analysis just enhanced my pleasure. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I think he could have held that last note all day!! Late to the party. Didn’t not get notification that you reacted to this last Christmas but regardless - this song is timeless and so is this performance! And it was an amazing performance! Love your channel and your analysis!! Hope all is well! Merry Christmas 2023! 🎄♥️🎄
wow just wow. I mean the vocal performance is astonishing all by itself, but he's performing this song with every fiber of his being. It pisses me off actually. I've never been able to commit this much to anything I've ever done in my life. Something to shoot for!
I have to admit... for the first couple minutes of your reaction (also MY first time hearing David sing this piece), I thought I could take a nap between notes. The only thought I had was, "come ON!" Well, silly me. At 9:10 of your reaction (about 1:22 on the Bill & Gloria Gaither version) all that changed. Between the pianist just SMOKING the arpeggios, and David opening to what I THOUGHT was full throttle (Fall on your knees) ... He had me from that point on. At the key change, the pianist got a bit more prominent, and kept just SLAYING the arpeggios, with the vocals reaching NEW heights. His belts are, as you described them, incredible. With, "praise his holy naaaaame..." and again on "Diviiiiine," I was right with you (almost fainting). As always, your reactions and discussions about technique were wonderful and informative. Great reaction! LOVED it!! 6 stars out of 5.
Ah thanks so much!
Such a great reaction! You are so knowledgeable and fun to watch.
Wow! Flawless! Beautiful!
I remember listening to him in my teenage years. Very talented man
Hi Jennifer hope you are having an great and awesome day ❤️
Thank you! And you :)
Lots of compilation vids out there about "Who Sang it Best?" The male performances shown stop at David Phelps' C#5...all females after that (some cringe-worthy). For what it's worth, the compilation videos led me to Home Free when the VERY young looking tenor hit his B4 and I've been a Home Fry ever since...and Home Free led me to Jennifer Glatzhofer. Great reaction...thanks as always.
Please do more David Phelps music when you can on here. He is such a master of his voice range
I get to see David perform in Houston next month. Really looking forward to it.
Absolutely love your presentation. I now realize I actually know nothing, but that got me deep down in my soul.
Have listened to David with the Gaithers and other venues .... he has a magnificent high tenor voice. Power, grace, style, passion defines his vocal ability. If you want another voice that has equal power, timbre, vibrato, control beyond anyone THAT IS FOUND IN Home Free HIGH TENOR SUPREME = Austin Brown ! Although in A Capella rendition with the group Austin solos into the stratosphere near the ending and ends it with incredible run and finale ! Both David Phelps and Austin recorded "Bring Him Home" - a Musical Theater piece that is shear brilliance ! Choose - either is phenomenal !!! GBjj
Jen did you happen to notice that Mark Lowry [Mary Did You Know] was in the background. One great artist enjoying another great artist and a third great artist doing a wonderful reaction and analysis video. Loved it.
Jennifer! You caught me by surprise with this one. I hadn't heard this performance before. I will say it's pitched a bit high for my voice. I was able to sing all but that C#, that's just too high for me. And wow, on the sections with the words "shining" and "pining", my transition point is in that 4 note drop and it's hard! I would sing more comfortably an octave lower. So this started out airy and light and at one point he became almost classical in his sound. Very nice. And a brilliant reaction and analysis as always Jennifer. 😊 Oh and the earrings ... Christmas stars?
Love that you sing along!! Such a great performance 😁 and yes, Christmas snowflakes
Hey Jen,
To get another perspective on David's dynamics and range, maybe you could react to his version of 'We Shall Behold Him'. We would be grateful to hear your erudite technical analysis.
(bet it knocks you out, too)
David Phelps is Classically trained and well know in Southern Gospel music. He has original songs as well. He does a different rendition of Unchained Melody you may like.
Best ever.
I didn't know David Phelps before watching this. And I agree with everyone else, what a beautiful redition of this song.
And regarding enjoying listening to music (is that correct grammar? Looks weird..): I guess as a musician one listens differently. Personally I have a problem with interesting background music when I am doing something that needs my focus. Some part of my brain always keeps looking for interesting parts in the music. For me listening to music definitely takes brainpower, but is enjoyable nonethless. But I am weird in that regard anyway in that I can't stand too much noise AND listened to Manowar when I wanted to sleep for some years...
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays
Oh yes! If I need to focus on something else, there can’t be any music because my attention will go to the music haha! Merry Christmas 😁
Jen, you just identified what it is that I so value about your reactions. Your approach is to articulate the ways in which the singer uses his voice to achieve each sound, in a positive way. The thought of saying what SHOULD have been done is “missing the whole point” of a reaction like yours. I learn best THIS way, as our (your and mine) attitudes are in agreement when we approach the subject. I know my comment isn’t so much about music or voice theory, but everything to do with teaching strategies (which I understand far better, as I’ve taught for 20 years). I believe it is your affirming perspective that makes you a wonderful instructor. Thank you.
Great reaction today! You should also check out his version of I Have Nothing.
Awesome reaction Jen, thanks! Not sure if you're aware, but at 3:44 in the video, if you watch over David's shoulder, you can see a member of the choir, in a red shirt, lean down then stand back up, that is Mark Lowry (the guy who wrote "Mary Did You Know" and performed it with Voctave). He is standing right behind David. I have met them both and they are talented and awesome gentlemen.
I love David Phelps and appreciate your kind remarks. I hope you will do more of David as I've watch too many reactions where they say how much they love David's voice, etc, and want us to give suggestions so that they can hear more of David's music. Well, we do, but they don't. I love listening to your "break down" of various songs and the performances. Thank you for doing this one. I would love to hear your reaction to "Mary Did You Know" sung by the writer, Mark Lowry, with David Phelps and Guy Penrod. I prefer this performance over the one with Voctave (sorry).
Thank you so much!
Excellent reaction
Thank you so much Jennifer for analyzing this amazing performance of O Holy Night by David Phelps. Loved your analysis as always. Have a great weekend and look forward to more of your videos. Still loving your album Layers. Cheers
Thanks so much!!😁
Thank you for this amazing reaction.
I'm watching this almost a month after Christmas. As usual, when I listen to you analyze a performance, I gain so much more respect for a singer's gifts. I have been a fan of David for many years, being introduced to him when he first joined the Gaither Vocal Band in the late 1990's. I think this video was from 2000. Bill and Gloria Gaither live about 20 minutes from me. David is still making amazing music. Have you reviewed any more recent performances by him?
I grew up on a diet of anything Gaither music growing up. There are some fantastic singers in that wider group, some of which I see on the stage in this video.
Please explore some of Guy Penrod's Christmas songs. At the moment, I'm drawing a blank 😒
Someone asked David what the most important part of his body he used to hit those huge high notes. He said he has always sung from his knees. If he is getting ready to hit some crazy high notes, he will exaggerate the bend in his knees.
Sure seems to work for him. 😮
18:09-18:11! I had to rewind that! That was so unexpected from you Jenn 🤣
Hahahah I have no idea what I do until I edit 😂
@@JenniferGlatzhofer 😂
Awesome reaction. You should check out John Farnham of Australia.
You need to heard a more mature David Phelps in Water (Live) with his daughter Maggie Beth Phelps. So good.
Tell me you’re singing Holy Spirit filled, without telling me you’re singing Holy Spirit filled.
David Phelps is one of the preeminent tenors in the world. He is in his 50s and still top tier. The pianist was the amazing Anthony Burger. He fell into a floor furnace at 8 months old and severely burned his hands. The doctors told his parents he would never use them again
U are like me. Most ppl don't get it. I love breaking down a song. Most ppl can't hear the intricacies. You did fine trying to give critique on the best tenor of our time.
Please react to him singing Nessun Dorma live. Love watching your reactions and vocal breakdown.
The best rendition of this song I've ever heard. Search some of his other music and listen.
"The End of the Beginning" is another song you should listen to!!
Several people have already requested and I add my request for you to react to Mary Did You Know by Mark Lowry and Voctave. It is amazing!
I've discovered the videos of this sensational singer just a few days before your upload. Of course you know that there are many reaction videos on this version... I've took my time to watch some of them. But your explanations are really special, yes it's a really long video, but in some points it's a real treasure. Very very interesting to hear, what he is doing and what he has trained to get on such an extraordinary level. I'm a singer student myself - on a low low level, not even professional, but nevertheless I am trying my best - and so I really got some hints where I should focus on.... Thanks a lot for all your entertaining and instructive comments!!! 😃🧑🎄
Beautiful.
David. Phelps. Is. Classicly. Trained
React to Gabriel Henrique singing "Oh! Holy Night" too.
David Phelps is Not of This Earth
Oh Jennifer you really should react to David Phelps covering Whitney Houstons "I Have Nothing"
If David Phelps and Austin Brown were to have a sing off ...... I think it would be very close as to who sang best ...... each are TOP OF THEIR ILK ..... HIGH TENOR of extraordinary ability ! Because I have heard both - David with Gaither Hour Christian Music shows ..... as well as more recently introduced to Austin Brown 10 months now - I am without certainty in projecting Austin the slight edge winner ! He is an incredible "young gun" power house talent I never can get enough of ! Either way ..... we the listeners ARE THE WINNERS !
I would put that Version by David Phelps up with Celine Dion and Mariah Carey as the top 3 performances of this great worship Christmas song. No one else can touch these.
It's interesting that this song was based on a poem ( Minuit, chrétiens) by French poet Placide Cappeau who was an atheist, at the request of the local priest. It was set to music by Adolphe Adam who was Jewish. Somehow it then becomes a popular Christian song. It became popular but the Catholic Church tried to bury by declaring it "unsuitable for Christmas services" due to its lack of religious spirit and its focus on humanity. The English version became very popular during the American Civil War and the song gained contemporary popularity in the 1930s.
Great reaction, David’s is the best male version I’ve ever heard, I’d love to see you react and analyse Celine Dion’s version of O Holy Night from her 1998 tv special concert, it is sublime and my favourite female version.
Jen, I have a different type of question. Can you listen to a song and simply have it speak to you and touch your very being. Or does your very good skills and training as a singer and vocal coach often if not always get in the way? By the way, it is what it is, we are the way we are! I very much enjoy watching you and your channel. God speed, have a blessed day!
The technical analysis is interesting. But what makes David Phelps’s rendition special centers on the song’s message. Combine David’s God-given talent with the message and you have something unique.
David’s been rank as one of the top tenors of all time.
Gotta listen to his recent version of Whitney Houston’s “I Have Nothing” :)
Check out Let Freedom Ring and He's Alive and It is well with my soul
Please react to Davids version of Whitney Houston I have nothing.
Can you do David and his daughter,"Water" duet. Pls
Check out Floor Jansen sing Oi Jouyolo ( O Holy Night) at Raskasta Joulua in 2016 when she was 7 months pregnant. Awesome performance !!
