Me and my husband tried to DIY the repair. The tools were great but we end up send our Trim to Five Star Marine in FL for them to rebuild. Thanks for making the removal easy!
I saw other videos on this but I was only replacing the trim seals and not the tilt… so I had so much trouble blending it out. I just about gave up it after watching your video I went out and tried it your way and it was so easy… thank you
I believe I am now proficient in trim cover replacement and subsequent bleeding. I did this process multiple times, however I just encountered a snag and not sure what is wrong. Here is the story. My Yam (2012) F250 had a very slow leak on right or starboard trim cylinder cover. It worked fine till I opened it up and with a brand new replacement trim cover kit (Yam 61A-43821-09). The cylinder showed some oxidation, and I cleaned it and used 2500 grit paper. Assembled the unit back and bled. Somehow, motor going down get stuck at the moment the tip of the ram shaft touches motor frame and will not fully trim down. I have to apply some weight to get it going and can hear struggle on the motor. However, raising the motor up is just fine and very smooth operation. I disassembled and switched the trim ram shaft assembly, but to no avail. I also release the emergency valve but when the tip of the trim rod contacts the motor frame, it stops and wont move unless I apply some weight. I wonder if the orifice somewhere is clogging up and can be repaired or the PTT is toast? Appreciate any suggestion or any of your video which can help out.
Really appreciate this video. I was able to get the replacement parts and have everything replaced in less than an hour on a 2015 Yami 150. Toughest part was getting the dry rotted seal out of the cap. Everything else was super easy. thank you
Thanks for the walk through It worked out great. You never know the abilities of the previous mechanic until you take something apart. The guy before me was a butcher that's why the seals failed. He bitched up the bore that the seal set in on the cap. Probably he was impatient taking the old ones out. Anyway all is well thanks again!
Excellent video, really helpful. Greatly appreciated. My trim hydraulics overhaul went fantastic. And the Marine Tech removal tool worked amazingly. 5 stars.
I dunno if you still read the comments on your videos. But this was really helpful in my rebuild. You should mention that the reason to be careful not to warp the rubber gaskets in the caps is because there is a metal core there. Warp that and your screwed, the unit I rebuilt was so rusted it looked like it was part of the cap! Only this video did not depict or show a metal tab in the cap that screws back on to the unit. Thank you!
You forgot to mension that you need to take the fill-cap out before you start :D I wrote everything down til tomorrow, im gonna do the same thing with my Honda BF75 engine. Well informed video dude!
Great video. I was able to complete this repair with very little mechanic skill. I also bought the tool from Marine Tech and it worked great. The pex tubing to prevent the tool from slipping is a great tip.
Thanks for the great videos, I have a number of projects for this fall. You’ve walked me through all of them. Nice to know what I possibly might run into on my Yamaha outboard
Got one of their wrenches and one of the pins sheared off and rounded two of the holes in one of my trims caps. I had to use a punch to remove the caps and although I could probably reuse them I elected to replace them. At $67 US for this wrench, I expected better results. Buy this expensive wrench at your own risk.
Thanks for the video. Extremely helpful. I bought the wrenches from you for my Honda. They worked great. I have your bubble purge system - another great product.
I only have 1 trim cylinder cap leaking. Do I need to take apart the good one as well? Everything appears to be ok in the one I took apart, other than the leaking gasket. BTW, great spanner wrench you guys sell.
I just scratch the cap and made 2 or 3 hole broken to open the cylinder cap, it stuck very very bad and i didnt have the tool like this video shows, I break 2 of normal pin wrench and it didnt move a little, the final I using a metal hammer back flat plate place it on the cap, and using another big hammer to smash on it. After I made a pit on the cap and keep smash on it and it loose finally, I observed the cap and the cap screw thread it just fine and I replace the seal inside and the o ring too. Then I put back together and it work fine. Of course the cap just like damage.
Thanks for the video. You are very thorough. Question: Is it better to pull the lower unit off to reduce weight when you lower motor down with manual release? Will be doing on 250 SHO. Thanks
Dont know if you are monitoring this video for comments but I have a question. Had the cap seals replaced last year because the O ring somehow squeezed out of the cap. This has now happened again. Any ideas on why the o ring would or could do this? Thanks
Once on the stand trim down to get the rams out of the way which makes marking them far less likely. However, if your end caps are like mine you'll pull your hair trying to get them off!!!
Thanks for the video! What about the rings on the bottom of the trim piston? Should those be replaced as well? I don’t believe that was mentioned in your video. Thank you if you can reply
My tilt ram lifts fine but does not have the pull down strength that it had before changing seals and O rings. Thus the motor comes out of the water when reversing. I have taken it apart 3 times and nothing is missing or installed wrong. Driving me crazy!
Great video, took all the guess work out of changing trim seals I bought the MT spanner wrench I'm sure I will be using it again. Looks like my Yam 200 SX TT motor is leaking on the back side, any
this was great info do you have the seal kit # for what I need to do this job my motor is doing exactly this !! great job. please send what I nee to do this . Thanks, The Rod Father
My 98 Yamaha 60hp 2s has trim caps that measure 32mm from pin hole to pin hole (across). Seems to me the AMT0006 wrench would work but only Yamaha 115hp and up are listed as fitting that wrench it seems to me. Not sure what "Showa manufactured" means as far as my motor. They are stock. Will the 0006 fit or not?
I have the yamaha 225hp, but the tilt and trim looks identical to the one in the video. Where can I get the spanner wrench (special tool ) to remove cylinder caps from?
Hi Think you very much.you help me for your instructions put ??? have you got a video on how to do the replacement seal from middle cap trim ? Or remove hydraulic from boat ? Thinks
I replaced the seals on my trim because it was leaking out around the shaft on the left side. Replaced both sides Put it all back together now the other side leaks and i cant figure out why. Everything looks fine .
i have a yamaha f150la , i unscrewed the tilt trim drainage by mistake thinking it was the fill cap. I had the Cap, a little bolt, a filter , and a bronze cylinder with a nipple on both ends come out. Now I am having trouble putting it back in cant seem to find out the order it goes back in , due to fact that as soon as i unscrewed it it all fell out at once.
Greetings I am Ismael from Puerto Rico. I have a Yamaha engine 250 HP model S250TXRX . I need to know which tool I need to open the hydraulic bottles for the trim and tilt system of my boat. I would appreciate if you could give me the exact measurement.
The Yamaha manual states not to use a rag or cloth to wipe down parts because of microscopic peices coming off and getting in the system. My question is what the heck do you use then?
I have a trim with double actuator. I fix it and before placing it I want to test it with a battery outside and I have 3 thick cables one blue, red, black and one black that goes to an actuator asks how I connect it in the battery to test it thanks
After replacing the seals on my tilt trim and as i lower it, it start to shake and jump. As it go lower and/or stop, it make a squeaky noise. Needs help on this, any suggestions?
I can't get the Trim 2 cylinder to lift the engine was working perfect before I replaced trim 1 both seals and dust gaurd. I hit up button apply oil the two small Trim cylinder pop out but the main isn't lifting. I loosen the cap on resivore getting air coming out. I tried bleeding like you did in video any suggestions it's a 2003 yam 115
Hi guys has anyone had trouble getting their screw off? My screw is already a little stripped from previous owner. I had a tough time getting it off to take the pressure off the system. Any tips? Thank you!
use a manual impact screwdriver. In another of his videos, he uses one. BTW, I think this guy is on his own and had a seastar bleed system, we should try to support him. Good dude, we all need his videos.
+Leon Griffin I was talking to a Yamaha guy and he told me it's a piece of cake, yea right. Well, it said once you put the motor on the trailer lock, then back off a touch, the pin holding the cylinder will loose. Remove the C-clip and tap the rod thru the piston and it will be free. However you first have to remove the tubing going across the cylinder. Also, before all that, you have to loosen the end cap FIRST. Then he said, once you have the cylinder end cap off, you pull the whole piston out and do it in reverse of the trim . I'm going to attempt it this weekend.
I replaced my seals.... now when lowering down to the 2 trim rams, the pressure of the fluid has pushed the dust seal out and leaks all over... I have swapped the caps from right to left and vice versa, still leaks only on one cap.... no matter which side I put it on, so I bought a new cap to replace that one and it happened again..... I am now lost at what to do... could air in the system be a cause of it leaking out like that? swapping the caps with each other was just to help rule out that the "piston" rods of the trim were not culprit. thanks if anyone can help.
my engines, go up and down without any problems, but once I am on the water and put in reverse, the engine comes up and out of the water. What can I do ?
+Barrio Jon You can loosen the screw like Leon is showing you and you then can manually lift up the engine. It's pretty balanced but still heavy so you may want another person to help.
Mate you're a life saver. Tried bleeding mine for days. Gave up for last few months. Found this video and had it bled on 10 mins. Absolute legend
Me and my husband tried to DIY the repair. The tools were great but we end up send our Trim to Five Star Marine in FL for them to rebuild. Thanks for making the removal easy!

Great job on detailing the process step by step!! Best how to video I’ve seen out there so far.

Thanks for making this video, It helped me service my seals myself and saved me alot of money in shop time.
Great video. I was able to complete this repair with very little mechanic skill. I also bought the tool from Marine Tech and it worked great. The pex tubing to prevent the tool from slipping is a great tip.
I've watched the video twice, where does he mention the part about pex tubing? thanks
Thanks for the great videos, I have a number of projects for this fall. You’ve walked me through all of them. Nice to know what I possibly might run into on my Yamaha outboard

Awesome video! This guy explains everything in detail and doesn't over complicate it.
Great Video, I ordered your tool thru Amazon. I also ordered the whole cap assembly that comes with the seals.
Thank you so much for the video and how you explain step by step, you saved my day sir 🎩
Thank you for putting this video tutorial together. You gained my business.
Solid repair. I have a cracked trim cap on my 150vmax and will be replacing it using your tool!
Do you have a video replacing seals on the tilt cylinder"?

use your tools at y shop - gr8 stuff man. Very happy and we punish them- gotta pull 2 f250 trim pumps this week :/
Thanks for the video. You are very thorough. Question: Is it better to pull the lower unit off to reduce weight when you lower motor down with manual release? Will be doing on 250 SHO. Thanks

Thanks. Great video. Just wondering if a verado 150 pump is supposed to bind up at the top as well?
Great video.
Had a question.
When air is pushed out, where is it coming out from?
the air is pushed out of the hydraulic cylinder ram into the fluid reservoir, so then recheck the fluid level and refill to the correct level.
Thanks for the video! What about the rings on the bottom of the trim piston? Should those be replaced as well? I don’t believe that was mentioned in your video. Thank you if you can reply

Which marine tech tool for 90hp yamaha 2 stroke? Tilt and trim is 6h1-13
How do we know what kit to get for the o rings? I have a VMAX 200HP OX66 1999 Yamaha. I wish your site made that more clear. Otherwise have no idea.
You should really top it off once more when all rams are fully extended. This is the point the oil level is at its lowest in the oil tank.
Great video, took all the guess work out of changing trim seals I bought the MT spanner wrench I'm sure I will be using it again. Looks like my Yam 200 SX TT motor is leaking on the back side, any
Hey morning I want to replace the release valve that you were talking about do you have any advice
Thank you very much for the video. Well explained, appreciate it!!!
Good for trim rams but what about the tilt ram, especially as the single piston has a loop at the top
this was great info do you have the seal kit # for what I need to do this job my motor is doing exactly this !! great job. please send what I nee to do this .
Thanks,
The Rod Father
We carry the common Yamaha seal kits, check the website.
Great video. Can you tell me which spanner wrench is required for the tilt/trim caps on a 2013 yamaha 150
You are a Master. !!!! Thanks for sharing.
What are the correct tools for both trim/tilt on a 2009 yamaha vmax series2 3.1L?
Merci beaucoup ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Awesome. How much is the tool? I have a f115 4str Yamaha
Thank you very much for posting the video and the detailed explanation!
Extremely informative article
Do you have a video doing the tilt cylinder? Mines leaking so I want to try and replace it
It would be super helpful for the DIYers out there if the part numbers were listed on what replacement parts are used.
Depends on the model and year. Just do a look up on yours: www.boats.net/parts/search/parts.html
very helpful as always going to purchase the spanner tool and attempt the job thanks.
Great video, thank you.
My 98 Yamaha 60hp 2s has trim caps that measure 32mm from pin hole to pin hole (across). Great videos! Love them all. So what if I try to bring up the motor, I can hear the trim motor but the motor won't raise with the power trim?
my motor is doing this same thing. Did you figure out your problem?
@elijahmataele1459 absolutely. I purchased the seal kit and rented the tool from the guy on the video. Worked perfectly
I have the yamaha 225hp, but the tilt and trim looks identical to the one in the video. Where can I get the spanner wrench (special tool ) to remove cylinder caps from?
So I have weak cylinders, what would cause that? I put the engine on it and it just pushes it down.
Hi
Think you very much.you help me for your instructions
put ???
have you got a video on how to do the replacement seal from middle cap trim ?
Or remove hydraulic from boat ?
Thinks
yamaha tilt unit. leaky tube on center cyllinder. can i just replace that tube?
I replaced the seals on my trim because it was leaking out around the shaft on the left side. Replaced both sides Put it all back together now the other side leaks and i cant figure out why. Everything looks fine .
I went to your website looking for parts. You only show trim seal kits. Id the tilt seal kit the same?
Sorry, we don't carry the tilt seals yet.
i have a yamaha f150la , i unscrewed the tilt trim drainage by mistake thinking it was the fill cap. I had the Cap, a little bolt, a filter , and a bronze cylinder with a nipple on both ends come out. Now I am having trouble putting it back in cant seem to find out the order it goes back in , due to fact that as soon as i unscrewed it it all fell out at once.
Great Video !Thank you the way you explained it was great i believe i can do it myself. again thank you
Greetings
I am Ismael from Puerto Rico. I have a Yamaha engine 250 HP model S250TXRX . I need to know which tool I need to open the hydraulic bottles for the trim and tilt system of my boat. I would appreciate if you could give me the exact measurement.
Hi,Leon
Just a quick question, do you know for Yamaha 2 stroke powerhead base gasket, do I need apply any sealer for the replacement?
Thank you
The Yamaha manual states not to use a rag or cloth to wipe down parts because of microscopic peices coming off and getting in the system. My question is what the heck do you use then?
Air
@@bradon38 Thanks
Worked perfectly, thanks
Your a good teacher.
great video - are those caps about 50 bucks each?
I have a trim with double actuator. I fix it and before placing it I want to test it with a battery outside and I have 3 thick cables one blue, red, black and one black that goes to an actuator asks how I connect it in the battery to test it thanks
This was great. Thanks
Do you sell the seals with that tool? I have the 2011 3.3 also. Would like both
After replacing the seals on my tilt trim and as i lower it, it start to shake and jump. As it go lower and/or stop, it make a squeaky noise. Needs help on this, any suggestions?
Thank you very much for these very informative videos
How much Trim fluid will I need if I drain and replace both trim pistons.
Can the barn that holds the engine can be fix too I think my motor has that problem I see sand coming out thank you
Great video very helpful.. Where can I buy that wrench at??
Helicoil is the cure for stripped threads
I can't get the Trim 2 cylinder to lift the engine was working perfect before I replaced trim 1 both seals and dust gaurd. I hit up button apply oil the two small Trim cylinder pop out but the main isn't lifting. I loosen the cap on resivore getting air coming out. I tried bleeding like you did in video any suggestions it's a 2003 yam 115
Put a piece of clear vinyl tubing on the filler (mine used 5/8") and keep it half full until no more bubbles and it takes no more fluid at full tilt.
My tilt/trim bleed off while motor is running, how do I fix that? It has fluid
what size spanner attachment do you use on a yamaha Vmax 150
how do you bleed out the unit for air if your manual release is unusable( seized)
the only other way to do it is to loosen the hydraulic line nut
Where is the motor support latch on a sho?
How much does it cost for this service? Average
Is there a specific torque?
Hm... what about to clean whole trim area before start to work on it ........
Onde eu consigo , fazer este tipo de serviço.
Thank you for the video now i know how to repair my trim motor for tohatsu 90hk.
A cor das luvas atrapalhou a visualização,
on which site can we buy this key to devise??
Nice spanned
have you got a video on how to do the middle trim?
+Ashley Lewis I would like that video as well.
+Frank Belgiovene can't find anything on RUclips it's a bloody pain.
+Ashley Lewis I will look into doing that one too. Its a pain as you need to take the trim unit off the boat.
+Leon Griffin I was talking to a Yamaha guy and he told me it's a piece of cake, yea right. Then he said, once you have the cylinder end cap off, you pull the whole piston out and do it in reverse of the trim . I'm going to attempt it this weekend.
Frank Belgiovene how did this all go? I know it was a year ago.... I need to do my main piston as well!
Where can i orden the señal and rings
anyone have a link to buy the tool, marine tech says they dont have it
I replaced my seals.... now when lowering down to the 2 trim rams, the pressure of the fluid has pushed the dust seal out and leaks all over... great video by the way!!!
To much oil in system
Thank you . Nice explanation.
my engines, go up and down without any problems, but once I am on the water and put in reverse, the engine comes up and out of the water. What can I do ?
I have the same issue, but mine are leaking. when I replace seals and O-rings, if it fixes this prob, will try to find this comment and let you know.
How can you raise the motor if it is stuck in the down position?
+Barrio Jon You can loosen the screw like Leon is showing you and you then can manually lift up the engine. It's pretty balanced but still heavy so you may want another person to help.
very well done videos thank you
exelente video
