1990 Ford Bronco Review - Garbage or Great?

- This is my review of the 1990 Ford Bronco, made in this body style from 1987-1991, the Bronco made strides in the style and convenience features of the model. Adding electronic 4 wheel drive control, a more powerful line up of engines with many internal upgrades, the 87 to 91 Bronco continued to compete with Chevy and Dodge in the full size SUV market.
The 5.0 V8 Engine had 180 horsepower and 270 ft. lbs. of torque. Авто/Мото
I just got done rebuilding a 1980 Bronco with 5.8M. No rust, rides great. Built like a tank
All 80's and 90's had twin traction beam suspension. 66 to 79 had soild axle front and rear
Thanks for the correction
owned a 84 Bronco for 20 years. It was the most versatile and capable off road truck in stock form I ever owned. With some mods, I drove that truck thru some seriously nasty places and pulled alot of other vehicles out of ditches and mudholes. Pull a trailer with 3 atv's at 70 all day long as well.
My bronco is a 1990 with 5.8. I have no issues with it. Runs great and in great condition.
90 with 5.0 and over 300K miles.
About to buy one. What should I look out for?
Is it for sale?
Same here I have a all white 1990 xlt with the 5.8 and it’s a very strong motor, it’s definitely a truck that turns a lot of heads
I live in California, so every summer I take the top off. I must say the Bronco look very manly with 32 all terrain. Wanted to put 35s but for that to happen I need to lift it and didn't want that. Maybe later on I will. I'm glad you guys enjoy your Broncos🐎 just like I do.
Inaccurate review. 1980-96 full size broncos have the softest suspension ever. Does not ride "like an old truck". Plus the underrated Twin Traction Beam front suspension is not a solid front axle. You say the engine power kicks in at 3000 rpm. Wrong. They have good torque and at 3500rpm their anemic smogged out engines fall flat on their face. Also the top on my 95 came off by myself in 5 minutes.
Im on my 5th Bronco. Had a 74, 77, 78, 83, and currently have an 86. FYI, you can remove the top by yourself. I do it all the time. Re installing it requires two people. The Bronco was based off the F150 chassis since 78. Not 80. Its also a shortened frame. Not the exact same size.
I bought my 1990 bronco in 91 still have it to this day
Another quick correction - International Harvester started Scout production (another direct competitor to the jeep) as early as late 1960, with '61 being the first model year.
Just picked up a 1989 ford bronco, eddie bauer, 5.0 ,140k miles and runs great! Old farmers bronco
Test driving an '90 Eddie Bauer here soon. Flat flat black, custom exhaust tune up just completed, new Master Brake cylinder, new distributor, new ECM modul, new fuel pump and lines, new steering box, new steering bushings, AC just recharged and blows cold, new Alpine stereo and speakers. 120,000 miles for 15G. What do you think about that deal? Anything specific I should look for?
My 1988 Eddie Bauer edition just hit 98k miles on it. Got it for $4,800 this year
I have a 1996 Ford Bronco. Absolutely love it. Fun drive and people comment about it just about every time I drive it.
The tailgate has a lift assist on right side making it able to close with one hand. My 88 it was broken, my 91 it is fully functional and makes it so easy to lower and lift the tailgate. My 91 XLT has a manual 4x4 system with EO4D transmission and 351w. I prefer manual 4x4.
As far as the steering goes swap the steering gear box with a red hat. Steering is tighter and response time is perfect. My 91 now has 173k and just recently replaced my 30 year old sensors with new motorcraft replacements. Alt is still original recently replaced my factory brake system. This Bronco has never broke down or left me stranded. It drives almost perfect. Tie rods are finally starting to wear out. So researching for the best manufacturer of replacements and will replace entire front end including ball joints. I enjoy this truck my daily driver. Yea gas mileage sucks at 14 city and 17 hwy but the extra cost is worth driving such a great SUV!
I'm looking to buy 1 of these can't wait
Absolutely love my 1985 Bronco II. Some issues though....fuel filters are prone to bust for some reason, a few dashboard electrical issues, and the drive shaft recently went out only to find out it's a ball joint instead of universal. And the guys I bought it from converted it to a 5 speed manual transmission, but never changed the transfer case. So it's a manual transmission with an automatic transfer case. It's like Frankenstein's monster truck.
Ah the joys of owning a 30 year old truck! 😖Keep it going! 💪
My first car was a ‘79 Bronco that my grandfather gave me. It was a beast. I now own a a ‘95 with the 5.8 Windsor that I found about 3 1/2 years ago. Will never get rid of this one. Slowly putting in wrench time and money into it to get it looking and riding beautifully.
I respect that! Built not bought!
The tops came off all the way until the end of production. The later gen just used torx heads and you had to unplug the harness for the 3rd break light as well as take off the 2 bolts for the shoulder harness's. Takes an extra 5 minutes.
My 1990 bronco is my favorite vehicle ever. I love this thing. I've had it for almost 9 years now. With all the parts I fix, this vehicle gets newer as it ages. Plus it was fully depreciated when I got it so the value is only going to go up. Reliable, easy to work on , acceptable fuel economy, the list goes on.
But it does NOT have a solid front axle. Dont spread lies
My 91 top comes off. Same set up as my 88. If your tailgate is heavy then your torsion bar is not working correctly. It is on the left side. I can close mine with one hand with minimal effort.
how do you manage the cargo area with only one door (rear-seats-down) (2D vs 4D) ?
Another great vid!
Thanks! Any thoughts on what I could do to make them better?
Great truck ! Thanks for vid.
The only vehicles that were solid axle front that compared to the bronco were the Blazers k5 trail, duster ram charger, grand Cherokee Cherokee sport, international scout Tahoe, suburban, Yukon, Land Rover d90 t110 or the
c350 7.3 4door bronco Centurion
Which was Ford’s creation of the ancestor to the Ford excursion, while of the c250 was the gas job 351 and 460
If your tailgate is that heavy to lift it just means the torsion bar is worn or broken. Cheap and easy fix.
Love it! Looking at picking up a single owner 1988 eddie bauer with 100k on it but am hesitant about being left stranded as I want to daily drive it and am not sure if these things hold up well. Whats your experience been so far? Besides fuel economy is it an okay dd?
Mechanically, it will hold up really well. if you are planning to daily drive it, consider replacing gradually or all at once the rubber hoses and plastic vacuum lines that are abundant in this engine. Icracked vacuum line can quickly cripple your engine and be hard to trace. It can quickly ruin your perception of the vehicles reliability.
@@rhynecars gotcha 👍 thanks for the advice. Ive heard a lot about people having to drop tons of money into these trucks but I absolutely love the way they look. Ill make sure for that to be a thing i drop some money into first
Own a 90 5.0 with over 300,000 miles. Was my daily driver until I got a company car.
Nice I have a 95 bronco 96 Tahoe 2 door 4x4 and a 93 ramcharger
Is the camera from the year the truck was made?
Yes, it is a betamax camcorder
I just acquired a 1990 Ford Bronco in pretty good shape, I'm new into this vehicles, do you have a recommendation for it? What kind of upgrades or facts about it? Would really appreciate it 👌
The first thing I'd do is change all the fluids unless you know they were done recently. purchase new vacuum lines or a complete set, these had a very simplistic ECU that depended heavily on solenoids for adjusting the fuel air mix, make sure you don't have air leaks as that will hurt performance and economy. For upgrades, I'd do a cat delete since most states don't require emmssions testing for vehicles 25 years old. A free flowing exhaust and headers will get you more power, and an intake will help a bit and clean up the engine bay.
That one is a nice example...... very nice
Great job!
LaSt BrOnCo WiTh A rEmOvAbLe ToP
Then proceeds to state that the next generation is just a little bit harder to take off...
Seriously dude I’ve had 3 an 80 a 95 and now a 92 and the only one that had the top come off was my 95
Yeah your Bronco definitely NEEDS some work. Get the bushings replaced and have an alignment done, replace the shocks and you’ll be amazed at how it rides.
Next time buy one with the 5.8 and you’ll have power lower in the rom range and actually get better fuel mileage
Also the front end is a Twin Traction beak set up aka TTB it was done to give the truck a more streetable drive
Brandon Candelario they all come off
I've had the top off of my 90' before. Take some trin pieces off and some bolts it came right off
the possible 1mpg better city mileage isnt a bragging point whatsoever and when are you going to need the extra power? they aren't very good for towing given how short they are
Broncos rule the world
AMEN
love that solid axle oh wait it's independent
I love the bronco i got a 95 bronco but thats independent front suspension
FYI
95 bronco is twin traction beam (TTB44) not IFS
This is my dream car. I've been doing some research on it before actually investing in one. The only reason I'm hesitant is because "stats" show that Ford is an unreliable brand and I'm afraid I'll regret changing from my 20 year old Chrysler cruiser to this
Those fourth generation Ford Broncos & eighth generation Ford F-series pickups were produced from 1987 through 1991.
Good review. Left field question: Once you fold that back seat up, do you think I could fit a Motorcycle back there?
Only a junior size dirtbike. A Honda Ruckus, maybe a trial bike. It's the length that's the problem. 🤷🏽♂️
Rhyne Cars Appreciate it. Electric bike it is. Again fantastic review.
With the top off and the tailgate down, yes.
I fit a dr650 back there in a pinch one time
Sure , you can get a Harley Davidson Electra glide classic back there , no prob
Not a solid axle, and not electric locking hubs
AWESOME
Use DrX rust remover it will save the floor pan and paint
Brought back by popular demand Ford Already has the Ford Expedition and Ford Explorer The Bronco was Discontinued after 1996 For declining sales of 2 Door SUVs and more focus on Family Friendly 4 Door SUV the expedition was its replacement am hoping the New Bronco won’t be a disappointment but I can see it happen as They will sell it just for its name to many classic names have been Butchered for profit the 2019 Blazer and Toyota Supra are 2 recent examples
As the market is shifting in the US to primarily SUVs, I can see another rugged option to the Wrangler, Defender, 4Runner being successful for 5-7 years. Also ,SUVs are pretty much lifted hatchbacks now, so a real off road worthy Ford will be a nice compliment to the Raptor.
Broncos after 1980 model had Twin traction beam front suspension, not solid front axles
Xlt came with electronic, vacuum, automatic, locking hubs, or you would get the worn company locking hubs and the front axle is not a true solid axle. Actually a split axle set up to run like a Dana 44.
Know what you’re talking about before you put it publicly on the Internet four on the floor does not refer to the four-wheel-drive capability of a vehicle, but the fact that it’s got four gears to shift through through a manual transmission in muscle cars and most fourth GEN and fifth GEN Broncos from 1987 to 1996 usually came with a five speed manual transmission or a a three speed automatic with an overdrive gear
Get the proper information horsepower for a 302 191 hp and a 351 came with approximately 199 to 201 somewhere around there
And if you ever talk about what the gear ratios are in the axles, it’s 355 gears in the diff
if the steering had that much going on.... deff need some front end work...... every bushing needs redone... and the typical ball joints... tie rod ends.... drag link.... steering link...... all of it.....
Better than the new ones.
Pretty and beautyfull
Noiiice rig!
Thank you!
Technically, the front suspension is independent
This guy should do more researching before doing this video. The information is lacking
yea no kidding. They didn't stop making the tops come off after 90. lol forward electric locking hubs. this guy doesn't know crap about one of the best off road trucks made.
I stopped listening when he said SUV.
Had one was fun
Yo I started on a 2002 ford ranger id kill for a 78 or a 79 ford bronco I want it so I can jack it up and look good I it I want it white with blue stripes NOT BLUE WITH WHITE STRIPES white with blue stripes I want it crome and shiny all the way around I want it for a show truck
Yeah, good luck finding one in good shape for less than 10 grand. 😏
ya I know I'm probally not ganna find one in that good but I get what u get it is what it is but that is the year even if I had to paint it my self I'd get the paint colors and have someone paint it for me I know I can also rebuild it to but that's a lot of money from there
I know where there is one exactly what I want but 32 hundred I'm 17 and don't have that money right now
i just picked up a 88 bronco thats got the 5.8 it looks like oj's XD got it for a steal though 1000$ just need a fuel pump
1990 Ford Bronco]
Does One On The Farm?
That was not a solid axel that was a twin ibeam
For sale?
Sold, sorry!
looks like your AOD was rebuilt
What would you know.
Exactly, I wish you would make a video to tell us what we all don't know!
No more solid front axel after the second generation.
Don’t do a review if you don’t know what your talking about. It does not have electronic hubs. And it is also not a solid axle. It is a twin traction beam or ttb. You can swap any mustang parts to the bronco motor as long as you use the other mustang parts that are needed like part of the wiring harness ,ecu , air intake system and the throttle body .you can convert the bronco motor from speed density to mass air flow and the truck will pick up horse power , torque, and overall fuel mileage.
Thanks for the info, while I don't know a lot about the Bronco, a review is not a technical breakdown of every detail. That would be boring to watch except for a select few Bronco diehard fans. 👍
that's a not a solid axle fyi.
Yes, thank you what is the technical name for this type of axel?
twin traction beam axle dana 44 variant. also know as the I beam.
Jeffrey Adams I beam was the 2wd front axle. This is only known as TTB
@@noahgaray7923 yeah but they are basically the same set up. Ttb is 4wd variant of that started in 80s.
Jeffrey Adams variant doesn’t mean that it is. They are still 2 very different front ends
Wrong. International scout was jeeps first competitor coming out in 1961 and ford lost a lawsuit to international for infringement
This guy makes me laugh, " the steering feels mushy" well it not a 911 ....... It's a TRUCK.
Having driven five successive generations of F-150, f250, f350, I can say that the steering is "mushy" in all of them. And that's ok in a truck.
Undercoat it with motor oil...
Is the host single? He’s super handsome looks like he’d make a good boyfriend 🤗💕
I never seen a comment but because of the off road capabilities the suspension is "squishy". So it has a lot of slop but man you take this thing off roading your eating bumps quicker than Rosie O'Donnell finishes dessert.....jk but seriously I have an f-350 and between the two it's night and day.
Awesome!
That new bronco looks like shit
K5s are better!
Too bad Chevy isn't reviving them like Ford is with the Bronco.
@@rhynecars yeah the new blazer sucks! New Bronco way better
