Damn. This is one of the best videos you’ve ever made. The story of Dom Reyes is a sad one. A fantastic fighter and even better person, his efforts won’t be remembered by the majority of the fanbase and that’s the saddest part. To lose unfairly is one thing. To lose via tainted judging to a psychopath and Narcissist made it even worse. The way Jon strutted down the octagon exit stairs after their fight was a nauseating sight. Jon wanting old man Stipe is so telling. A humiliation via a current top contender will not be allowed. Sorry Tom. Respect him as a fighter perhaps, but how someone could 'like' Jon or be a fan of his is nuts. He is a POS.
POS person and overrated fighter. No boxing game and could make the argument he lost 3 fights. They want to make him into some unbeatable legend to keep selling ppvs and such. Jon with the current pool of talent comparably is not the GOAT or that great
Jones' Heavyweight run will not be looked back on fondly, guaranteed. Fans will give him shit for fighting old man Stipe (instead of Tom) forever and given how insecure Jon is, he won't like it one little bit.
You're right, this is exactly why that "you've got to definitively beat the champ" argument is BS. You have to watch and judge title fights as if neither man is champ. If one guy barely beats the champ, he wins.
Watching the 'beat the champ' argument get dismantled recently has been satisfying to watch. Just like the 'TD's should count for more in fights because of effort' argument fans used to make for fighters winning/losing fights because of TDs and control against damage which has all but disappeared from public discourse.
let me ask you this ...would this even be a discussion if this was a non title fight with two unnamed fighters.....for instance if we call jon jones ted and dominic reyes bill and ted is announced the winner.....i could guarantee that this would go down in the books as just another fight..... my point is some fights matter more than others....therefore certain things will come into play according to this fight that happened.... do you watch the NHL (hockey).... for example some guy had taken a slap shot to score into an empty net in the closing seconds of a game....what happened next was the player got a dirty hit for doing that..... what was the difference of the player slapping the puck into the empty net vs just taking a wrist shot into the empty net. to me a goal is a goal but apparently this is some unwritten hockey rule that you shouldn't do... my point here is every scenario is different...

Nice work Lucas. It's refreshing to have this mini docomentary from you from time to time. It would be a lot cooler if you do this more often 👍 Anthony Smith coudn't catch a break 😂
Thats what every one of us though. When Jiri koed Volkan in his first fight in the UFC we tought it couldnt get much worse than that, lights went fkn out. But Reyes..he was basically on the other side. Those bombs are unreal.
Actually Jones had the higher striking percentage in almost every round... Reyes hit AIR more than he hit Jones.... The whole world gassed him up like he really defeated Jones and his Ego got the Best of him.... He came at Jan like he was Hot Shit but Jan showed him that he was Nothing but a Cold Fart😅. Spann confirmed it.
Especially in that 2nd round. Jon was like Ali. Making him miss all them shots but people THINK they landed. I saw him slip at least 4 punches in that one combo
I see a lot of similarity between Dominick Reyes and Cody Garbrandt. The perfect style to beat the goat, but not to beat the other contenders, so unforgiving
That druggy had a fix-fight with Gane which was definitely awful after docking Francis for a whole year, now he's docking Aspinall. That druggy is washed.@@mmarandom69
@@mmarandom69Gane was a favorable matchup for Jones. Dude got wrestled to a decision by a one-legged Ngannou. It’s so obvious Jones is cherry-picking his opponents at HW. Just look at how Jones sat out for 3 years until Ngannou was finally gone, doesn’t wanna fight Aspinall or Pavlovich, wants to fight old man Stipe instead and then retire.
This was a very perfect example of 'styles make fights'. Reyes matched up very well with Jon. As good as Jon is he was never much of a KO threat and Reyes also stuffed seven of Jon's takedowns, minimizing Jon's biggest weapon. But look what happened in Reyes' last 3 fights. All losses by KO/TKO, something that Jon couldn't do.
Another explanation is that Jones is past his prime and stopped using PEDs, explaining his lack-luster performance not just against Reyes, but Santos as well who blew out his knees in their fight.
i believe you can see a noticeable difference in his body language after his fight with Jiri. losing to Jan hurt but it wasnt devastating. his fight with Jiri he took an absolute beating the injury report was unreal. crushed orbital KO'd face first into the canvas -- that kinda beating changes a man.
I believe he should have retire after that fight tbh. He almost died and the way he later explained the impact of those bombs was quite disturbing. Jiri seriously hurt him.
Reyes chin got completely destroyed after that fight. It explains why Ryan Spann was able to KO him with a jab. Sadly, I don't think Reyes ever wins a fight again. Doesn't help that his management is awful and keeps booking him against power punchers that'll keep cracking his already destroyed chin.
The loss to Jon Jones was unfortunate but it was not the downfall of Dominick Reyes, going into MMA with american football as a base was, starting with that much brain damage is like building a house on sand.
You missed one fucked up detail in this story. Dominik knocked out Jiri with upkick from his back, Jiri clearly colapsed totally out (even admitted it himself) but recovered quickly and the ref missed it. Sad unlucky career
I nearly cried watching this mostly because this is exactly what i have been thinking ever since that glorious night where he undeniably beat the most privileged fighter in the ufc history but was brutally robbed of a clear 48-47 score card in his favor and how his career went from glory to dread especially by the hands of a judge who presented a 49-46 score card in favor of Jon Jones, which at the time seemed so blatantly wrong that my emotions after that fight went from extreme anger to cynical laughter pertaining to the fact that to beat Jon Jones, you also have to beat the opinions of 3 or at least 2 incompetent judges, which unfortunately Dominic wasn’t able to accomplish despite clearly winning the fight no more and no less than 3-2 or 48-47 and ironically even Tiago Santos, who’s fight with Jones was definitely not nearly as controversial, was able to convince at least one of the judges in his favor, thus losing a split decision whereas Reyes was egregiously given a unanimous decision loss despite that even the vast majority of the media members and literally every MMA fan, whose opinion i consider valid, unequivocally and unanimously thought that Dominic won that fight. Little did he and all of us know that to beat the biggest cheater in MMA history, you have to get him out of there because otherwise, you’re not fighting a fair one on one fight; rather, it’s more like one against 4 or 3 if you’re lucky to get a split decision loss. Ever since that triumph that quickly turned into tragedy, I would occasionally think about Dominic and how his life could have been different had he not been viciously robbed of something he truly deserved to win… Now I am not sure what happened to his fight with Ulberg but to be honest, I don’t know if I even want to see Dominic go against that monster because you said it well another loss and he will likely be terminated from his assignment with the UFC and more likely than not at this stage in his career fighting someone like Ulberg will likely result in another KO loss and unnecessary brain damage to one of the most promising contenders that was so close to at least tasting the glory and at least some financial benefits that come with having that UFC belt. Great documentary
It could be a very different story if he actually won that decision and kept his confidence of his undefeated status alongside with the glory of officially beating Jon Jones by decision, his confidence level would be higher in the rematch, and Jones's confidence could be finally shattered as we know outside of the cage Jones is known for scandals like hiding under cage and steroids, and that inside the octagon loss after many outside of octagon losses could perhaps hindered Jones mentally in the rematch, we also know styles make fights so Reyes could potentially win the Jones rematch too with the confidence boost.
@@timurjack8773 confidence does not fix lack of head defense. reyes defense sucks. thats why he gets ko'd. has nothing to do with the jon jones fight result.
reyes beating jon is more so to do with the fact that jon has been at the top for so long and everyone who fights him has had their entire career to prepare for him.. Jones was fighting and has been dominant far before reyes was even a name.. also Jon never had KO power to knock out reyes anyways.. and yes I do believe if we can say Reyes lost confidence so he kept losing we can also say Jon lost motivation for being on top of the LHW division for so long.. Can u imagine putting everything you've got into beating the goat leaving it all in the cage clearly win the fight but 3 judges say you haven't. Must be soul destroying
i think most of the judges in the UFC to this day still judge by using the old MMA/boxing rules. theres no way Reyes lost that fight . damage trumps all by a far jog in scoring yet we still get wins from pushing the pace and take downs that lead to no damage.
Wow what a great tribute to Reyes. I always felt he was one of the most underrated fighters in the UFC. Definitely deserves more credit. I'm glad someone out there took the time to give him the credit he deserves and show the world how talented he is and the trials he has had to deal with. Awesome video!

I remember my first time betting on mma was 281 and I picked Ryan Spann by KO and another for a 1st round finish. It's one of those things that happens to someone where you just know they are finished and not the same. From the heartbreak of the Jones fight, and the way his last 2 fights ended, especially the Jiri one, it just felt like he would never recover from that streak. If he was to fight Ulberg he'd get hurt bad. Just like Tony. After Gaethje he was never recovering.
I mean, regardless of how this all played out. Jan still KO’s Reyes weather he had the belt or not. So he becomes the Holly Holm of LHW, beats the consensus GOAT and then gets starched immediately the next fight

Most fans don't understand the Texas State rules in MMA. The same thing happened with Izzy vs Whittaker 2. MMA fans still can't fathom effective aggressiveness and fight are control are weighed the same as effective grappling and effective striking. But casuals keep casualin'
@@MuhGlassRibs to be fair though most MMA fans casual or not hate “ring generalship” in boxing yet it’s a criteria for scoring. Just goes to show how stupid it all is.
I think coming from football can be terrible for your chin. You can only take so many shots. You come in from the world of football, there's already a lot of holes in your punch card. Brendan Schaub couldn't take a punch either. Marcus Jones was really chinny too.
I think a lot of Reyes' post Bones fight carreer can be attributed to the fact that in the 4th and 5th round he looked GASSED so bad. And he seemed a lot more reserved after that, especially against Jan Blacovich Edit: a lot of people also don't give Jan much credit for absolutely DESTROYING Reyes because of where both men ended up, but for that short period of time Jan looked unbeatable until Glover came in. Also proved to be a really tough fight for Ankalaev
6:48 watching this back, as Jones won the fight, & is now the UFC Heavyweight Champion, & Reyes went onto lose every fight since, makes you feel what Jones is saying was true now. A pawn in the story of Jones legacy
Nah I don't see Reyes as a pawn in Jones' story. I see the Reyes fight as more of an asterisk in Jon's legacy. Any poll you look at will be in Reyes' favor that he won the fight. Most if not all MMA channels, commentators and experts have Reyes winning first 3 rounds. The CEO of the company said himself he thought Reyes won the fight. The biggest shame in this robbery is we could've gotten a Jones vs Reyes 2 and 3, which even though I am a huge Dominic Reyes fan, I believe Jon would've won the next two.
@@Megavars well I thought Jones won the night of the fight, I called it before they did, you can’t be forced backstage the entire time & win, jones was landing the better % of strikes while half of what Reyes threw actually missed or was barley landing, yes he landed a lot, but a lot of those strikes where glancing, the reply of round #2 shows that Reyes actually didn’t land that big barrage that looked like he landed live but actually didn’t & then round 4-5 Jones clearly won.
The fight was absolutely a robbery but losing a decision didn’t make him a worse fighter the truth is Reyes came up in a shallow era of lhw (anthony smith got a title shot) so it wasn’t much competition for him then he fought better competition in Jan and JIRI would have killed that version of Jon Jones Reyes fought they knocked him out and took his chin from all the damage
People underestimate the impact of fighting on your career longevity. He got caught with many shots in his career, and eventually your body gives out. We are not immortal, and the persuit of greatness does not mean your body will follow.
Robberies can really derail careers. It forces fighters to attempt to fix what isnt broken. Causing them to lose another. Now theyre doubting themselves and it just snowballs and halts all momentum
Tony fell off after becoming one of the best LW's ever. He became famous and has a dedicated fan base. His downfall is sad but it's not as bad as Dom who was a one hit wonder, got robbed brutally and KO'd 3 times in a row.
Tony has had a tough downfall but it came after years of being one of the best lightweights of his time. He was just unfortunate with injuries and with McGregor's hype fucking up the whole lightweight division for a bit, as well as all the times his fights with Khabib were cancelled. His career is sad, but not at the same level.
@lucastracymma8764 nah its definitely Tony, with all the khabib matches that got canceled and him falling over the cord, 12 fight win streak to never actually touch real ufc gold and now a 7 loss fight streak.. Reyes is a sad story too though
The robbery didn't end his career. Jiri ended his career. It was such a brutal dismantling of Reyes and display of brutality. The elbow haunts him probably to this day. Making your gimmick that you failed your career, because of a robbery is pretty sad and arrogant. He should read the Book of Five Rings.
Guys please understand that our brains are biased towards what we last saw, Jon won 4-5 that's why it seems that way. The rules of UFC MMA state that you only need to win 3 of 5 rounds doesn't matter in what order. Dom did that convincingly
I'd bet some of those K.O.'s were made easier due to pre existing brain injuries that occurred during Dom's football career. It's a shame things went the way they did for him. From what the research is showing, most football players that make it to the collegiate level will suffer from some type of CTE later in life.
IMO the most Tragic Downfall is Renan Barao, Not sure if there's a video on him yet but it def doesn't get talked about enough, 30 fight unbeaten streak, P4P #1 fighter with dominance being compared to the likes of Silva & GSP, Then the TJ fight happened, And dude all of a sudden looks like an amateur the rest of his career, Losing damn near every fight. Has to be one of the hardest fall offs in MMA history of such a high caliber fighter, So hard that most people don't even recognize the name Renan Barao.

A fantastic fighter and even better person, his efforts won’t be remembered by the majority of the fanbase and that’s the saddest part. Because very few, if any, reach what he did against one of the best fighters in history. And yet, he takes nothing from it. Like you said at the end of the video, we’ll be rooting for him.

You are exactly right. Styles do make fights.

Ever since that triumph that quickly turned into tragedy, I would occasionally think about Dominic and how his life could have been different had he not been viciously robbed of something he truly deserved to win…
Now I am not sure what happened to his fight with Ulberg but to be honest, I don’t know if I even want to see Dominic go against that monster because you said it well another loss and he will likely be terminated from his assignment with the UFC and more likely than not at this stage in his career fighting someone like Ulberg will likely result in another KO loss and unnecessary brain damage to one of the most promising contenders that was so close to at least tasting the glory and at least some financial benefits that come with having that UFC belt.
I think a lot of Reyes' post Bones fight carreer can be attributed to the fact that in the 4th and 5th round he looked GASSED so bad. And he seemed a lot more reserved after that, especially against Jan Blacovich

I remember watching that fight and thought Jones won. It was obviously extremely close.
