- This is the original review of Outland by Siskel & Ebert on "Sneak Previews" in 1981. All of the segments pertaining to the movie have been included.
Frances Sternhagen is one of the most underrated character actresses. She's excellent in everything she does!
Yeah, it’s basically “High Noon” in space but I’ve always enjoyed it. Peter Hyams did a nice job and it’s very well made. Nice visuals and Connery is good. I’ve always liked the Jerry Goldsmith score.
not sure about Peter Hyams doing a nice job...the end scene with the assassins doesn`t really make sense....why does the assassin shoot at the metal plate falling down the side?? it doesn`t look like a person? I`ve watched this part 10 or 11 times and can`t figure it out..and Connery knocks out Peter Boyle with one punch..kind of lame..The acting is great though,,,
I agree immensely.
@@babybird871 don't knock it, it's the only really good film he ever made.
it was one of Connery`s best performances in a non James Bond movie and it couldn`t been much better with a better director...
This is one of my favorite Connery movies, among many
RIP
'Outland' shouldn't work, but it does. Maybe it is the exact time it was made, where it has enough of a darker 1970's vibe at it's core. Connery is very good and so is the production design and cast.
why shouldn't it work?
It's unfortunate this movie isn't as well known as "Alien"-It was a fairly entertaining sci-fi action movie with a clever plot and a good performance by Connery.
Is it unfortunate? That a “fairly entertaining” film isn’t as well-known as an all-time classic? Seems pretty fortunate to me
Great sci-fi flick, part of a trend in science fiction films starting in the late 1970s where the future wasn't as tidy and civilized as seen in Star Trek or Lost in Space. I liked the fact that the film took place in outer space but there no aliens or ray guns, and there was no cheesy romantic subplot. Great chemistry between Frances Sternhagen and Sean Connery's characters as equals - she definitely wasn't a damsel in distress.
Wow, they revealed the whole plot in their review!
They also revealed the end of Sheppard (Peter Boyle). What an idiot Gene Siskel was.
Fortunately the journey of the movie was worth more than the destination. I own a copy of 'Outland' and still watch it from time to time.
@@blazerocker1734 At least Siskel has the excuse he didn't like the movie. Ebert did like it, and dumps a pretty big mid-movie spoiler in his opening remarks. So go figure.
Ebert always was bad about spoiling movies in his reviews.
this is why S&E was soooo great in the late 70's/ early 80's.....3 previews, each about 90 seconds long. People take trailers and cutscenes for granted now. Back in the day....this is ALL we had!!!!!! thanks for uploading.
"That's a marshal joke." Ha ha. I love it.
Gritty Space movie. More of these please!
Peter Boyle was such a great actor.
I never saw Outland back in the day but seeing some of the comments here make me interested
Roger: "I like the fact that dumb guys come in and do stupid things." LOL. Love it.
Thanks for this for the opening if nothing else. The early WTTW opening for this is one that's harder to find.
I really liked this movie at the time.Great special effects and superb acting.Connery was awesome.
They don’t show this enough on tv nowadays
Yup. I used to watch this when I was a kid on weekend nights when CBS used to broadcast it.
I'm with Gene Siskel on this one.
I've always wanted to watch this.
So what's stopping you? 9 months ago you posted that you were interested. Just buy the blu-ray already!
@@chiefscheider you're absolutely right . This came back onto my radar again . Alright I'll look for it.
👍
Roger being on the back foot on this one, I think.
What the hell, Gene? How could you not like this film?
@Ghost of Pambo - re: "What the hell, Gene"? Mr.Gene Siskel is no longer living. Do not expect an answer.
It's very good movie
Underrated
Outland is good. I enjoyed it the first time I saw it back in that summer of 81
Cliff Clavin's mom
It could have been a better film. I think the idea was for he production values to eclipse or paper over some of the film's shortcomings. Oh well.
The movie was boring, the premise is fine, but the movie is meh, Peter Boyle is fine, but he's not exactly a Tough Villian, kind of lesser Bond villians
Frances Sternhagen is very good and she and Connery are the 2 best things in this flick, but the movie is just dull
Agreed. Outland has a neat concept but it really doesn't do anything with it. The film is also imitating High Noon but lacks that film's menacing villains or any real sense of urgency. Connery, Frances Sternhagen, and their relationship are definitely the only good things about this "meh" film.
Peter Boyle was a good actor
STILL don't get the high noon/western comparison.
Have you watched high noon.. apparently not
I'm really disappointed in Ebert. This isn't a remake of "High Noon." It's a rip off of that movie and it sullies the memory of the much better film it's ripping off. There is zero scientific accuracy in "Outland" and the characters are dumb to the point of unbelievability. Read Harlan Ellison's review of the film. He skewers it to devastating effect. Full marks to Siskel for seeing it as the turkey it is. Films like "Outland" give science fiction a bad name. Just because a story is set in space doesn't mean it doesn't need to be realistic.
You can't blame Gene for his review. He's not some 21st century yokel like me that only see's the value of there being another film set in the same sort of a sci fi future as alien. To him this was just another sci fi movie charging full price for general admission and what he saw in the film simply wasn't enthralling enough to him to warrant sending everyone out to see it. Gene was a little too smart for his own good sometimes. Roger Ebert knew when to tone it down and identify with the average movie going yokel such as myself. They both hold a very special place in my heart though. RIP
can i blame him for not having any taste? yes i can.
@@plasticweapon congrats you lambasted a man with brain cancer from beyond the grave. How magnanimous of you.
Close to 40 years with this film, I now knowingly realize that everyone has the look of Harry Dean Statton in Alien.
_Outland_ was made by a lot of the same people who worked on _Alien_ and inherited the same industrialized "used future" aesthetic, leading to a plausible fan theory that the two movies exist in the same universe.
After re-watching these old clips I have come to conclusion that I NEVER agree with Siskel, LOL. Good on Ebert - OUTLAND is a great movie!!
@@frankielucero8372 That wasn't the point for my comment. Reviews/opinions are completely subjective to the viewer.
Yeah, I've come to the same conclusion. I like him fine, and RIP both of these gentlemen, but Siskel always seems to be criticizing a movie for failing to hit something it was NEVER AIMING AT. For instance, he panned 'Taxi Driver' for not fully developing the romantic plot line, which he felt really had potential. Gah.
@CM Kimciago - Good Grief! There must have been ONE film you enjoyed that both Roger/Gene agreed with. E.T? J.F.K? "NEVER," ehhh?
@@warriormanmaxx8991 "good grief", I was speaking hyperbole. JFK is most definitely one of my all time favorites.
I agree with Gene's words, but I still liked the movie, so I go with Roger's final decision.
I liked outland agree with roger on this one
This is a cool movie no doubt
I've always enjoyed the movie and in addition to Connery's excellent performance, Peter Boyle and Frances Sterhagen add great acting to the film as well. Agree with Siskel about the villains though. It would have been far more rewarding if they were tougher and more menacing looking adversaries.
When grown men could disagree and remain friends coworkers! Today one would be accusing the other of being RACUST!!!
@tent cater - re: "RACUST!!!" Did you mean RACIST? If so, how about proofreading posts.
@@warriormanmaxx8991 LOL
Mad Magazine parody of the Untouchables:
Costner: "Come with me, Malone."
Connery: "No way!"
Costner: "It'll make them forget Outland!"
Connery: "I'm in!"
LOL !
I liked Connery and the look of the movie but I could never figure out when the assassins came and Connery dropped the siding piece it didn`t look anything like a man.....The assassin shot at it and the whole section exploded. Did Connery do something to cause it to depressurize? If not shouldn`t the assassin realized that?
The assassin was jumpy and simply responded to movement without identifying the target. The depressurization was caused by the window cracking and all the air inside the greenhouse blowing out.
At 06:23, "The dome will crack!". When Jeremy Irons tries to shoot Hauser in "Total Recall ". Maybe this film was a the first "Total Recall " , that nobody remembers? Hmm. Also reminds me of "I Come in Peace ".
I like how this "review" spoils the entire movie.
At any rate, Gene was wrong, this is a science fiction classic.
He isn't spoiling much. Nothing happens in the film after a few deaths.
I think this is when they were still on PBS . Thanks for posting this . Can you do the review for HIGH RISK ? I STILL can't believe it didn't become a hit . It's one of my favorite movies that bombed . This movie reminded me of old westerns . Great movie even though some of the effects could have been better .
Yes, this was during the PBS era.
First time I saw this I thought Connery played it like James Bond which is good.
Every Peter Hyams movie features a great plot with a terrific cast and beautiful cinematography but when it's executed, you forget what you watch as soon the film is over.
not quite.
I first saw this movie on TV decades ago and have remembered it ever since. I recently watched it again on Bluray, and I enjoyed every minute of it. It's a great movie, perhaps even a cult classic.
@@Durwood71 I saw Outland again last year and again, it just did nothing for me. I like Connery, I like the relationship he had with that female doctor but the film failed to be as intriguing as it sounds.
You basically just watched the entire movie. I'm serious. Roger Ebert literally described the entire plot, the characters, and every scene in his review! There was literally nothing he left out of it. This film was nothing more than a bad Western shot on extremely claustrophobic and cheesy sets. There is absolutely nothing to this picture beyond what they reviewed here.
If I was the studio, I would have told the producers to take this script and stick it up Uranus.
Get it? Uranus??
(I just wanted to match the intelligence of this film).
you should be a film critic. you would be the king. by the way, that's not a compliment.
@MaskedMarvyl - re: "Uranus" = Ohhhhh ... you are SOOOOO funny!! (Not!)
@@warriormanmaxx8991 , It was late and I was tired.
You can tell that Ebert was a lot more intelligent that Siskel, no question about that. Also I think Frances Sternhagen absolutely stole the movie with her funny/grouchy performance.
Well I totally disagree with you regarding Siskel, but you are 100% correct on Frances Sternhagen
@@kdohertygizbur The reason I disagreed with Siskel and agreed with Ebert is because I thought Outland was a fun, interesting space movie to watch. Frances Sternhagen was so cynically enjoyable, that made the movie worth it for that alone.
@@nathanfitzgerald6651 I understand where you're coming from but my only issue was you know you said that Ebert was a lot more intelligent than Siskel only because he agreed with you and I don't think that's correct
really...really not saying much.
@@plasticweapon you want to join in the conversation junior
These guys reviews are so inconsistant that I think they were bribed to give good reviews and maybe gave bad reviews if they werent.
Roger addressed this. He considered every movie an emotional experience and never cared about consistency.
Outland?? Eh...it was aiiiiiight
