Lenovo P series Thinkstations are also very good value for a lot of the same reasons. Used professional or enterprise products are often far better value than new consumer level "future landfill."

I bought a Lenovo H50-50 Tower PC for my daughter like ten years ago. It came with a 4th gen i3 and I popped in a low-power GPU so she could play basic games as a child. I eventually upgraded the CPU to an i7-4790, the memory to 16GB of quality DDR3, installed a 650 Watt Corsair PSU (I did need the adapter cable), ditched the hard drive for an SSD, upgraded to a modern Wi-Fi card, and currently have her running with an RTX 2060 Super. It is still a beast when it comes to 1080p gaming.

You can’t even buy new from Lenovo. Bought a new monitor direct from their store, didn’t show up 2 weeks after estimated shipping date. Customer service said I had to wait a month to find out more info about my order even though it wasn’t back ordered. Two months went by, never received it. They never shipped it and never provided an update even though I contacted customer support 4 times asking for an update.

for my first gaming pc, I went down the path of buying an old office pc to upgrade since I had a fairly small budget, so I had to do a lot of research to find a suitable model to upgrade. I ended up going with the dell precision t3500. Beefy stock cooler, large case, and xeon x58 platform. One of the best things was that it uses a standard atx power supply (both 24-pin on the mobo and standard mounting holes) instead of the usual proprietary nonsense. The only proprietary part on the mobo was the 5-pin fan headers, but I found adapters online. Replaced the 2-core intel w3503 with a 6-core x5675, increased the ram from two 2gb sticks to three 4gb sticks (mobo has 6 ram slots, max 24gb), and threw in a gtx 1060 3gb.
If you go down the used office pc path and you can only find models from dell, hp, and lenovo that have proprietary components, at least make sure you can buy replacement parts (such as psu) from third-party sellers, and triple-check the form factor or dimensions of the chassis so you can make sure your upgrade parts will actually fit without any issues.

You do have to be careful to make sure you're getting what you pay for in older systems though. I started putting together a budget gaming PC build with an old HP z440 Xeon workstation. I put a 1660 Ti into it and it seems fine for basic gaming. I found an open box deal on a 4060 Ti 16GB and replaced that 1660 Ti, it benchmarks the exact same as the 1660 Ti did. Turns out the CPU is way behind the curve on keeping up, even with the 1660 Ti let alone the 4060 Ti.
That led me to a new open-box i7-14700KF gaming system. The old workstations are good machines, and I'll still use it for other duties but it did cost me a couple hundred in the end to find out that it wasn't good enough.
I've been playing with older systems for quite some time now and maybe it's my age showing but what's with all the LED lightshow going on inside and outside the PC case nowadays? Some of the systems I've seen on YT make me wonder if they'll trigger seizures. LOL!

Look into the Lenovo P520. Thinkstation. Around $200, with a Xeon W-2135, Cores. 6 ; Total Threads. 12 ; Max Turbo Frequency. 4.50. up to 256 gigs of RAM, they do come with a proprietary 900 watt power supply with two extra 6 + 2 included connectors. Yeah the issue he was talking about is if you try to use a standard power supply with an ATX adapter to fit the Lenovo board, the system and PSU fans will always spin even when the system is powered off or asleep. Meaning you need to flip the switch on the back of the PSU, or unplug it. Not a huge issue for enthusiasts trying to get a bit of used performance but it is annoying for reselling.

The newer Lenovo power supplies are just straight 12v or 12v standby. It's not that hard to modify a standard ATX supply. Just short the 'power on' wire so it's always putting out 12V when switched on. Hack or build your own cable or adapter. I have a Ryzen 5 Ideacentre right here and 12V rail is always on and that's all the board takes.

These businesses target large companies who constantly buy large PC stocks, and who also scrap large stock, without considering selling to the used market. What goes in the bin is shocking. The recycle IT industry is another to look at. The business management team have no interest on the technical side that support refurbishment or resale. Additionally being on and mining for 24/7 for 5 years is 100% going to be worse than the power and heat cycling of a card used for like 2-6 hours a day for 3-4 years. Its just simple maths to realise that an ex gaming card is the safer and therefore higher value option especially when ex mining cards are about the same price.

Hostility toward the user is an easy way to damage your reputation.
I generally agree with all the points here. It's really frustrating when a brand goes from pro-consumer to anti-consumer nearly overnight across a generation. I do have to say though, that their embedded workstations and USFF machines are some of the most popular when they contain a Ryzen APU. Those things are insanely popular for emulation enthusiasts. But they don't do anything unique with those, which is where I think they shine.
Lenovo just needs to do what ALL brands need to do, and stop doing shit for short-term gain, and think about the bigger picture. Make a better reputation for yourself, price your products competitively, and make them reliable AF. People and businesses will come back.

Lenovo's biggest problem is they charge insane prices. The only time their products are near market price is when their products are on deep deep sale. Worse yet you will pay them money, they will say the product will be custom made and delivered in a month and on delivery day you will get an email saying your product has been delayed another 9 months. And don't get me started on their awful support.

🙂 sounds about right, coincidentally i'm retiring my Lenovo Haswell board and putting it in storage, she's been good to me all these years, it always posted, i bought it new at Microcenter. Yes maybe Lenovo is hurting, its the similar story over at Intel with their snake oil commercials cause they are hurting a little bit too. Hopefuly Lenovo wakes up and rite up her ship. I like the Lenovo Legion Line, they carry them at Microcenter, they need a few things changed like getting rid of those oem coolers and using tower coolers, and they need to unlock the motherboard and make it bios friendly just like ur typical asus board or other name brand board, and remove those dumb power limiters on the cpu cause the cpu doesn't get to rev up the watts like u would see on a normal board.

We have laptops from Lenovo and when something is not functioning they remove the whole motherboard or component and they replace it instead of fixing the actual issue. It's fine when it's included in the warranty but it's ridiculous when it's out of warranty service and we pay for the whole replacement part even if it's just a charging port.

Biggest issue with that generation is they were very specific with the ram the board supports. Out of all the ram i have, a single stick of 2gb 1Rx8 DDR3 works. Came with 4x2gb installed, all were very similar but different speeds and the pc just wont work with anything else but what they list on their site. JUNK.

Yes, buy new, but only when it offers a good deal. At the end of the day, people will buy if they find something that suits their needs and fits into their budgets. A new PC can break down too, and even if you get a free replacement from the warranty, no one is going to pay you back for the time, data, or opportunity lost.

Greed is so insidious. It just brings out the sleaze in people. If people could trust companies like Lenovo to make all of their PC's easy to repurpose, they would make money from the people that want to (and have the money to) make their newest models into something more, like a gaming PC or NAS or home server. Those that aren't able afford to go for the newest would still be able to rely on the used market for something that was good enough for their budget.

to make it even worse, Lenovo no longer gives you warranty on new systems. they add in text which says they give you warranty, but when it comes down to it, then even for obvious factory defects they will do anything to avoid warranty, even if you buy a new laptop from them and it comes with a broken keyboard, they won't give you warranty on it.
even in the EU where such things tend to be followed a lot more than in USA.
I have a Lenovo laptop, many things where designed like crap, but lets not yet talk about that now yet.
however well within warranty it starte having serious problems due to that crap design.
to finish it off, the keyboard started to misbehave in the first year and some keys litterally died/broke before warranty ended.
while in the warranty period I opened a warranty claim,
as a response first it took long before they replied, but then after that it was also one test/instruction thing per mail so quite some time in between as many of them also where things you couldn't do if you where using the system. and I already had delivered more than enough proof of it being actually broken, yet still it went on to request me to do all kinds of test and even some of them double, or later asking if I tried something which they had litterally before asked me to try and which I had shown them proof of(this kept happening after they probably ran out of tests for people to do).
but the tests wheren't the thing they where after, since I had already delivered more than enough proof,
but they know how long your warranty still lasts, so what they did was just idle and spin around things for very long and so as to skip the last month of it's warranty and directly the day when the warranty was technically over they made the statement it was out of warranty and closed the case. despite this problem having been around for much longer and the warranty ticket being submitted in the actual warranty period, as well as the proof and such being delivered more than clear enough while in the warranty. so it should have been in warranty, the only reason it eventually fell outside of warranty was because they just kept spinning around it idling/waiting for the last month of warranty to pass.
but back to why it was designed crappy.
    1. the keyboard is designed to be broken, I litterally have laptops from 12 to 20 years old, also some thin laptops, an I have used them way more and way longer yet there is nothing wrong with those keyboards, also they typed a lot better, even a old first or second gen i5 superthin laptop, which also had a very thin/flat keyboard.
    2. the screen is so bad that you might wish you had a black and white screen just so you can see more colours, since this screen only supports grey, well technically some colour, but it is so washed out that you actually feel like something is wrong with your eyes after looking at it for a while.
    3. the screen again, but now it is the brightness controller, when you put it in lower brightnes, but also in high brightness, but it just is worse in lower brightness, you will litterally get nausious and serious eye strain from the screen flickering so much, you can actually see the pwm frequency they use for the screen, so you littrally see the screen flicker, kind of in a way where it looks like some odd noice, after using that screen for a while both my night and day vision are worse for a while, while with normal screens that problem isn't there anywhere near to that.
    4. they litterally still do not have working stable drivers for it, and much depends on propetairy hardware, meaning a lot doesn't work well.
    5. while generally actually being really good on battery life and also on performance, the idle power usage is actually terribly high, so wether you do nothing or run a light game like minecraft or minetest it won't really affect the battery usage, wall powermeter also confirmed it.
    6. IO ports?
    7. also very important to mention, is that if you connect the laptop to the charger and use it, it will shock you litterally, it will litterally shock you if you use it while it is in the charger, even though that isn't completely as rare for metal chasis laptops, since my old magnesium Dell Latitude also did that, and actually worse than than this laptop. however next to that while charging the laptop will start making random coil whining sounds where you wonder if it is okay or if something is wrong, and Lenovo has no info on that.
    8. the audio hardware actually still doesn't work, even though upgrading to Linux improves it's behaviour, the audio hardware has some serious glitches in it which cause it to sometimes not detect a headphone or to think one is still connected while it is not, next to that if you can't yet install Linux since you are still hoping to get your warranty through and since you won't take a external SSD with you everywhere just to run Linux from it without voiding the laptops warranty, if you use it in windows then if you use a full screen application it will glitch and lock the audio hardware to it's current settings, so it won't react to changes until that program is closed, even if you go to a non fullscreen program, this also means it can't detect it f you put a headphone in.
there is one exception however, it can detect when the headphone goes out then, and sometimes also glitches into that, and also enters it if you accidentally touch the cable, meaning that it will automatically switch to the buildin speakers after a while when using full screen applications. this is one of those problems which is fixed if you upgrade to Linux, note that I use my Linux install from a 1tb external ssd, since early on I already noticed things wheren't right and if I install it on the main SSD or swap the SSD(since the buildin ssd has only 512gb) then they would use that as a reason to void warranty, so I ran it from a external SSD, with Linux that till is faster than windows on nvme.
    9. the wifi card has problems simply put, actually if you seek for problematic wifi and problematic wifi drivers in somewhat recent wifi cards, then that specific wifi card tends to be the first to show up, while it can reach good speeds and doesn't use a lot of power and can sometimes reach good range, Lenovo didn't suply proper drivers with it, and it also doesn't have proper drivers actually, so you have a rather big chance that for example it will chrash when it automatically changes from 2.4ghz wifi to 5ghz wifi, next to that tends to regularly be unstable at speciffic distances from the router, and likes to auto disconnect or greatly decreases speed even when in good range since it just isn't stable and doesn't have any proper drivers either

I do think the average Joe that doesn't know anything about computers probably is better off buying from a brand apart from them taking a massive risk that could cost them more in the long run, like I asked you to do the video about pc's with GT710 graphics cards, and being classed as a "gaming pc", by the way thank-you for that video hopefully saved people from falling into that trap :-). but for a competent pc builder then I find going for parts that I can trust to be working some 8-10 years later was the way to go when buying parts used like recently bought an EVGA RTX 3090 used on an auction website we know, and yes working 5 months later without any noticable flaws. so if the person is able to change parts then buying used pre-built system that they have seen running, and with parts they can trust can be the way.
