    I had a side business like what you do for almost 15 years because I didn't overcharge people and I built nice PCs that worked well. Most of my advertising was word of mouth and I had so many repeat customers that most of them are friends of mine to this day. Good on you for treating people right and keeping the used market alive!

    That aside, as a former head of sales in a small PC hardware store, we had one of the, if not the cheapest markup on our products as a "reseller". This is where we as a store buy from the wholesaler, where the public cant buy.
    Throw a % on it for overheads wages and profit then put it on the shelf for the end user price point. Our markup was 38%.

      Absolutely! Going in blind to buying a PC is the worst thing you can do! It's a fools game full of scammers and people trying to squeeze as much money out of you as possible. Even going to a big electronics store, There are going to be staff that get paid commission and will say whatever it takes to get you to spend money on what they say you will want/need. If you plan on a noob journey of buying or building, Do your research! Know what things generally cost and what will suit your needs from many online content and what is a fair price for someone who may build it... And check out the reputation of any business you may think about using. Sounds an effort, But don't do it at your wallet's peril.

The previous cpu mobo was a 4590 with incorrectible error, a first in the tens of PC's i've bought since the 90s but has been now replaced with i5 8400 + H310M and 2x8gb ddr4 which costs me total 140usd. Such upgrade went from newer games in slideshow mode to playable. Zelda TOTK emulation from 15fps to almost 60fps too.

      @@MrAkaacer Off the shelf is not always a rip off depending in your needs, you just need to do your research first to know what you are buying. For example for someone who's not a gamer, and just needs a PC for basic stuff, and does not want a laptop, then something like a Lenovo Thinkcentre Tiny that does not draw a lot of power, and works well on Windows, and most modern Linux distros can be a good choice.
      However for us gamers, and PC enthuist, it usually is better to build our own from new parts if we have the cash, or buy a used PC that has some life left in it for a good price, and upgrade it ourselves, than to buy a prebuilt "gaming" PC that that has a more than fair markup with specs that might not even really meet our needs.

It is totally possible to hook up a DIY vrm cooling system on almost any board, but for almost the same price there is a board with that option available. SSD heatsinks come with pads very cheap these days. Side note that on most of those boards you will be limited to memory speed also. I like your thinking, lets frankenstein the vrm.

    I like to hold on to my builds for a bit so I can tune and stress test. Recently built a 5800X that ran beautifully on the bench with just the 24 pin and the 8 pin cpu plug. Transferred everything into the case but this time with RGB and fans. Still ran great for about 3 hours, then just shut down. Hmmm 🤔. Power back on. On..Off. The 1000 watt PSU was used but tested fine with the PSU tester…….so I used it for the bench build and later when everything was transferred into the case. Guess it just couldn’t handle any extra load. It was toast. Guess those tester aren’t infallible. That’s the second PSU that I’ve had to change shortly after an install in a new build. The first would just shut down the PC for no reason, but still works to this day. Now a bench supply. Seriously considering not using used supplies anymore. Even if they test good, there’s no real load on the supply, so it has a higher chance of failing when that load is increased. It is what it is I guess.

Larger power supplies allow for higher tiered graphics cards also and provide the user with a level of comfort knowing they won’t have to swap out their PSU when upgrading. In any event, is that all you got out of my post? It wasn’t about the size of the PSU as much as it was about the failings of PSU testers and the risk associated with buying used PSU’s.

    11:17 - You should highlight this issue in your next piece about economics, ie. during times of high inflation and economic stress, businesses become more dishonest just in general, cheaping out on materials (eg. construction companies using fewer nails for roofing, it can be anything), govt people are more likely to accept bribes (because they become afraid for their jobs too), product quality declines, packaging trickery expands, advertising deceives, etc.
    The Romanian guy Vee talked about this in one of his videos, detailing how the populace there coped during the communist era when things got very bad with hyper inflation, eg. he said fast food and even restaurant food became more strongly flavoured, because businesses would try to get away with using meat, fruit and veg which was not really fit for human consumption anymore, herbs & spices disguise the badness, and they're more likely to use leftovers the next day. Food inspectors don't stop it happening because they're more willing to accept bribes, they need money aswell.
    Meanwhile, barter becomes more common as normal money increasingly loses its value, people trade directly in skills and goods, eg. you know how to bake bread, I know DIY, so you bake me some loaves, I'll fix your fence, etc. The state hates such direct transactions because it's a form of resource flow the govt cannot monitor, tax or control, it creates a shadow economy. Eventually, luxury products can become a new form of money, eg. in Romania Vee said jars of coffee would often be traded for items again and again, never actually being opened, forming chains of exchange in order to obtain a required product. He also said state provided food ration vouchers were a disaster, because all that happened was everyone would always obtain the maximum of everything they were allowed, whether they wanted to use the items or not, because anything spare could then be used for barter with others, so rationing actually resulted in even worse shortages. Collectivism sucks.
    In my local main superstore (Tesco), the size of the slices of garlic bread in their typical 9-pack have shrunk by about a 3rd, yet the price has remained the same. Vee refers to this as hidden inflation, he has a chart showing how the weights of numerous well known confectionary bars have shrunk in the last 20 years. Likewise, main brand boxes of tea bags in Tesco (such as Twinings) have reduced their contents from a standard 100 bags down to 80, while the price has gone up a lot at the same time. Standard wine boxes shrank to a smaller size a few years ago. I've also noticed that the larger size versions of some products (which were better value) have vanished, eg. I used to buy 1kg bags of Tesco penne pasta, but now Tesco's own brand only has the 500g version on the shelves. Products often disappear and then return but listed as 'new' to entice people to buy. And I've noticed that discounts on "clearance" items (ie. food that has use-by dates for the day in question) are much smaller than they used to be, often to the extent of being not remotely worth bothering with; I'm sure much of this food remains unsold each day and is just thrown away, whereas 30 years ago, unsold bread (for example) was given directly to the homeless and those on low incomes via charities, or it was sold in the store very cheaply for students (I remember buying a clearance sliced white loaf for 5p from a Sainsburys around 1990).
    These issues will apply to tech aswell, companies and of course individuals cheaping out if they can, or indeed just outright lying or faking what's sold, which in the case of PCs is an MO with considerable opportunity for dishonest practice, especially when the buyer often knows so little about the tech anyway.

    I just finished putting some older parts together into a build. The core of it is my 1st gen ryzen 1600, b350, 16gb ddr4 2800. Bought a nice looking tempered glass case on sale for $35 and found an 8gb rx570 sapphire nitro plus for $58 shipped on ebay.
    My old power supply went bad I found a new one basic 700w for $55.
    Had a slow 500gb ssd.
    Its all together looks great and running very stable. How much do you think this system might be worth if i sell it ? USD

    NGL, was disappointed that with SSD prices being so damn cheap now, that you didn't install a SSD boot drive and have a the 500GB HDD as a game drive. Would have greatly increased the user experience as you well know....

    • @PCFixer
      @PCFixer Год назад +1

      With SSDs so cheap you could probably get away with a single 1 or 2TB SSD, no more need for spinning rust. I built and sold used PCs (and hope to do it again) where I always made sure the PSU and drives were new; everything else was off ebay, RX570s and GTX1060 6GB. I still have a whole box of used parts, too... waiting...

    • @SirReptitious
      @SirReptitious Год назад

      @@PCFixer Yes, the price difference between 500GB and 1TB drives is small now, so I would probably opt for a 1TB unless a 500GB was on a great sale. But I never throw away working HDDs or SSDs, so I would include the 500GB in the build even if you put a 2TB boot drive in it. You never know what the user will end up doing with the machine. I love having lots of drives and space! I'm not quite at r/datahoarder levels yet, but it's not for lack of trying..... ;-)
