Your husband is one of the Best of the Best. It is ok to cry, one of his brothers was hurt trying to save lives and the structure. Your husband taught him well, that's why Nathan survived. What your husband taught him and with our Lord being with him and making sure he lives on to do what he was trained to do. I am a 35 year veteran of the fire service, 4th generation. I cried when I saw this as did many other Firefighters and their wives. No shame in crying for a brother Firefighter who beat the Monster and is alive today, It was not his day, he has many other things to do.

Same type of thing happened my 2nd year at a factory fire, old abandoned building, fell 21 feet broke my lumbar spine, my neck at C3, C4 had burns as well, and the PTSD is real, I ended up going through rigorous physical therapy and a lot of rehabilitation and now do wildland fire and I absolutely love it. Don’t be ashamed for 1 second, you have a whole family of brothers with you forever. Safety protocol has changed a lot since 2011 (my accident). The worst part pain wise was the burns and now I have metal all over my body but my scars remind me that I survived and fought through it, and you…you saved your life that day. I was unconscious and figured as I was falling I was going to burn to death but God had you on his hand as he did me. Reach out to your brothers and do your CISD when you can. You will always be a firefighter in your heart even if your body stops. Good for you for fighting and not giving up, even through the pain and the surgery and all of the suffering. It’s worth it to be able to do what you love and live your dream. 🤜🤛👊❤
19 years on the job and never even heard of something so incredible, I wouldn’t believe it without the footage. This man got lucky, but he took that lucky break and fought for his life and loved ones. His wife is an amazing woman as well, those are the words a man putting it on the line and at his weakest needs to hear, he needs to know she isn’t going anywhere.

The mental, emotional, and physical energy that it took for that man to fall 24 feet down into a ball of fire in full pack. To then get up establish his will to live and walk through a wall of death and flames to jump up and pull himself out of the fire blows my mind. Never underestimate a determined man’s will to live, go down swinging.
@@brizzled5193 it depends on what you’re carrying. Truck team members carry at least one tool and the pack on their backs. Engine team members carry the pack and the hose. Everything that’s carried changes with the type of fire and job each person has. The air bottle itself weighs 11 pounds. With everything else on the pack you’re looking at close to 50-60 pounds
The protective gear also weighs a significant amount. I’ve seen a firefighter weigh 180 pounds without gear to almost 300 with tools and equipment that suits a particular job
As a building inspector for 41 years who has done a lot of training at the fire academy on construction types, materials and approach today v. yesterday, I will tell you that Chief Terrazas is absolutely right in his statement on 28:50 of the video. When sizing up a fire scene a fire command staff has to consider the type of construction, year built, access, etc. in addition, today firefighters are faced with reduced access, composite construction materials, lack of maintenance, etc. it is this kind of approach that can make the difference between life & death. I agree with an aggressive approach to firefighting, however, if there is not a report of people needing rescuing, I’m all for surround & drown. Protect adjacent property & and make sure everybody goes home! Very glad to see FF Espinoza is healthy & back on the job!

My father was a LAFD FIREFIGHTER back 50's, 60's and 70'S he was a Enginer for mostly in the harbor for stations 38, 57 boat 1 in harbor and the station 36. what an amazing story, what an amazing team of heros who continually put themselves in harms way to save others, this was not to be your finishing of your life on this day - you have so much to offer your lovely family, colleagues and those who you choose to save every day. Whether I'm watching an amazing story such as yours, or drive past an accident where the fire heros are once again, trying to save someone from a horrific wreck, or whether they don't get to save that person, they still remain and extract their battered remains for them to be returned to their loved ones. So heartbreaking to know that so many fire heros have lost their lives i.e 911 so many people they left behind who they thought were their own heroes but had to share them....god bless you all and what an amazing forward thinking team to realise that systems of old can change for the better, respect to you all - so amazing and uplifting for a half hour viewing.....such is the pain I can only imagine, when you wake every day, repeat the phrase, every day in every way life is getting better and better and hopefully for you it will, what an inspiration....every time you feel pain, thank those above that you are feeling, even thouggh it's pain, because that means you are lliving.....such a wonderful person, be around for your kids they obviously adore you! To think that this totally unscarred man fell into (and ran around in) a fully engulfed structure fire.....the amount of protection that gear gave him is nothing short of incredible. The difference between his face and his unprotected hand afterwards is huge. A difference of life and death really.

Outstanding video on the fortitude to fight and make it out of a heinous situation. This story transcends the profession of just firefighters and should be a case study and taught to all first responders. I found this by accident but this story need to be circulated to all persons that face these kinds of perils on a routine bases. Great job Nathan, you have set the bar for others to follow.
In the early 70's my Grandpa (a retired/disabled firefighter) invented a device that could be dropped into a burning building, and once it got hot, a valve popped open and it flooded the area with some sort of compressed gas that displaced all of the oxygen in a particular area, and it starved out the fire (just in that localized area) in seconds. It was designed to give firefighters and trapped victims a tunnel of egress to crawl out of a burning building. It worked perfectly every time he and the local FD tested it, but it could never get approved for sale/use because it starves the area of oxygen so the fire can't breathe, but neither can a person (unless they had their own oxygen tank). So if not used properly, it could actually incapacitate a person who was otherwise perfectly able to escape, and essentially suffocate them. He rebranded it as a product meant for emergency use by firefighters (like the guy in this story) only.. and he got approved for limited use/testing! Just when all seemed like it was going well and he was destined to become rich and famous for his soon to be successful invention, one of the devices failed by accidentally detonating while a firefighter was carrying someone out of a fire. The firefighter had tethered the safety pull to his kit, which subsequently got caught in something as he was clearing the building, which put the device off "safety" and made it ready to deploy when the spoon/lever was pressed and released.. well as he was carrying the victim, their leg kicked the canister and bashed into the lever, causing the valve to open, creating a cloud of oxygen displacing gas around the firefighter and victim. It knocked the victim out, and almost took out the firefighter, but luckily he heard it going off, and he pulled his mask on. Some people claim it may have saved the victims life since they were unconscious and not panic breathing smoke for that 30-40 seconds it took to get them out to fresh air, but either way it was enough to ground the invention and prevent it from ever seeing the light of day again.

I have been a Firefighter/EMT for 35 years. I have seen this type of incident many times. I lost a firefighter to this type of accident. This firefighter was saved by the grace of God. It was not his day to go home. I wear a Saint Florian around my neck and have for 33 years. he is the patron saint of firefighters. The Lord is with us as Firefighters and Police Officers everyday. It is not a job for the faint of heart. My brothers and sisters are the Best of the Best. They do what needs to be done and when it needs to be done and never hesitate. God bless you my brothers and sisters and may the Lord be with each and every one of you as he was for Firefighter Nathan Espinosa that day. LAFD is one of the best in the country, along with all other departments in this country.
“They do what needs to be done…and never hesitate.” So the Supreme Court ruled that policemen don’t have to save people, I imagine that firemen don’t have to save people either, right?
The Supreme Court can rule whatever they want for Firefighters and Police Officers, they will never take away the spirit of those two organizations. The Police will always serve and protect, and Firefighters will continue to serve and protect Lives first, structures second. Both will give their life if needed to make sure the public is safe every day. They are not in it for the pay they get, they do it because they want to make a difference and to make sure you, the public are safe from harm. God made the Firefighters and the Police Officers. Take them away and you have mass destruction .
I live in Washington state and it is so rainy here that I have been so blessed to never see a fire of that size. We have a occasional housefires, but nothing of that magnitude and I am so emotional to see what people do every day and put their lives on the line to do.
You have to be a very special person to take on the job of a Firefighter 👩🚒 especially when you have a wife and children. My friend recently qualified as a firefighter she a strong personality she recently passed her license to drive the fire truck. What a scary ordeal to go through Angels we’re with you that day. It was your time to go.
After 33 years of Firefighting, 25 years full-time, never roof ventilated, never been on the roof of a fire involved building, it's not a procedure of my department or other departments in our country - deemed a unsafe practice.

Agreed. We never heard from his Captain though. Makes me wonder if some type of disciplinary action had occurred up to possibly termination with cause. I haven't read or heard anything in regards to that. His AO (apparatus operator? ) may have been in charge while on the roof, but ultimately his Captain is the one who made the decision to go to the roof...assuming the IC was not yet at the scene, because that is what "Truckers" do. I've seen that department (and others) go "all out" to the roof on many commercial structures with similar fire conditions successfully. Unfortunately they were unaware of the building augmentation to the structural members of the roof. I'm curious why we never heard from his Capt.

Thank the Lord for your PPE equipment, it is amazing how it does give time and save lives. Blessing to you all, you are true heroes. You put your lives on the line for others. @@bernadettebarry3099 - I believe it is STILL listed as undetermined origin and still listed as “under investigation” by the LAFD. But I noted a couple suspicious things…(a) how long it took for the alarm to have been raised, it was made by an automatic alarm and not ever called in by people working there and (b). When firefighters arrived they observed people with soot covered faces carrying out arm fulls of clothing materials. Those certain peak my investigators triggers, but beyond that I have not found anything else ( they tend not to give anything out on active investigations). So as far as I can tell, officially it’s being looked at, but it sounds suspicious. However you can never really tell unless you get physical evidence and/or a confession. Espinosa going thru the roof was determined to have been associated with unsafe building additions that caused the truss he was on to give way under the heat and load I think.

This made me think back to Fire school where our PT instructor always told us that when you’re ready to quit and your mind is telling you you’re done and to give up. You still have 40% left in you to give. That’s exactly what he utilized and to climb up that section of roof he rode down and climb the wall back to safety!
It's a miracle he came out alive from that fire with only hand injury and PTSD the fear of losing your life instills anxiety and fatigue for the rest of your life. God spare Nathan's life for a reason that's what I think.
Buildings that size should have some sprinklers.... When those flames were shooting out of the duck work that means all the ducks inside have already hit the ground and heavy flames are everywhere. It's sad that this young guy didn't get the training he needed to be safe.

It makes absolutely no sense whatsoever to have guys on that roof. Those roof guys are literally right next to a Blow Torch. When they first pulled up it was it was pretty obvious the structure was compromised and is a surround and drown.
They were still searching inside, isn’t that why? So when they hose someone they aren’t burned alive by the steam? There were people still exiting. Hind sight is 20/20. What a tragic event. It amazes me the selfless act you all perform everyday. Yes s there is adrenaline rush, but you still choose to do it day after day.
If there are guys inside, there will be guys on the roof venting..period. I wasn’t there..but was the building occupied? If not, and it’s already advanced like we see on the video?…maybe outside ops water down the structure..tough one
Fire already ventilated through the roof, in multiple areas. No reason they should have went to the roof. All the footage before the blow out shows flames already on the roof. At that point it’s already a matter of time before more areas open up. Get off the roof, being up there will not help anything. The force those flames were coming out of the vent went to show that it’s hot and fast under your feet. That speed and heat is not slowly catching things on fire, it’s eating through what it touches. Really lucky he made it out and I am happy for him. I would have got up there, sounded it, but seen all the signs and been like nope. This is not the place we need to be. But that’s him being new and trusting the experienced guys he was with. Their senses should have been like let’s go, this is bad.
Ridiculous decision putting those firelighters in that position. You're there to save life. Not roofs. The heat was obvious coming from those vents. Should've retreated and fought from distance.
It's interesting that some of the changes they've made are very similar to what's been fairly standard practice for incident commend here in SFRS for as long as I've been in. For example, we have to put through a tactical mode to Control with every message and we use, or we're supposed to use, the decision-making framework along the lines of aim-plan-actions-effectiveness-review. Other things are very different. There are no circumstances where you'd have British firefighters on the roof of a burning building. That is just not a tool in our toolboxes at all. I'm an IC and I can't wrap my head around the idea tbh.
I can understand why you think that's a bad idea, but think about it: If your departments attack strategy is primarily interior attacks, venting is a very high priority; Furthermore if you NEED to make a push further into the structure to get to the fire, but the interior heat is unbearable, vertical ventilation can work wonders in make the conditions more tenable for hose line advancement. This all being said, there are alot of arguments against truck guys getting on the roof and it really depends on what your department prioritizes. Personally I see it as another tool in the tool box, but I hear what you're saying.
No kidding the culture is resistant to change. All respect to Nathan, his suffering should be the catalyst for change. In much of the rest of the developed world, nobody would be up on that roof. Certainly not unsupported. Has been that way for decades. Way too much fire in that building to suggest anything but bad news for structural integrity, certainly too much risk to life.
Heavy fire in a bowstring truss should have been a no-go from the jump. Fire was coming out of that vent stack like a blowtorch, that's plenty of ventilation.

Whether I'm watching an amazing story such as yours, or drive past an accident where the fire heros are once again, trying to save someone from a horrific wreck, or whether they don't get to save that person, they still remain and extract their battered remains for them to be returned to their loved ones. So heartbreaking to know that so many fire heros have lost their lives i.e 911 so many people they left behind who they thought were their own heroes but had to share them....god bless you all and what an amazing forward thinking team to realise that systems of old can change for the better, respect to you all - so amazing and uplifting for a half hour viewing.....such is the pain I can only imagine, when you wake every day, repeat the phrase, every day in every way life is getting better and better and hopefully for you it will, what an inspiration....every time you feel pain, thank those above that you are feeling, even thouggh it's pain, because that means you are lliving.....such a wonderful person, be around for your kids they obviously adore you! I think you are stronger than you can imagine.....much respect from NZ

To think that this totally unscarred man fell into (and ran around in) a fully engulfed structure fire.....the amount of protection that gear gave him is nothing short of incredible. The difference between his face and his unprotected hand afterwards is huge.

Outstanding video on the fortitude to fight and make it out of a heinous situation. This story transcends the profession of just firefighters and should be a case study and taught to all first responders. I found this by accident but this story need to be circulated to all persons that face these kinds of perils on a routine bases. Great job Nathan, you have set the bar for others to follow.
In the early 70's my Grandpa (a retired/disabled firefighter) invented a device that could be dropped into a burning building, and once it got hot, a valve popped open and it flooded the area with some sort of compressed gas that displaced all of the oxygen in a particular area, and it starved out the fire (just in that localized area) in seconds. It was designed to give firefighters and trapped victims a tunnel of egress to crawl out of a burning building. It worked perfectly every time he and the local FD tested it, but it could never get approved for sale/use because it starves the area of oxygen so the fire can't breathe, but neither can a person (unless they had their own oxygen tank). So if not used properly, it could actually incapacitate a person who was otherwise perfectly able to escape, and essentially suffocate them.
He rebranded it as a product meant for emergency use by firefighters (like the guy in this story) only.. and he got approved for limited use/testing! Just when all seemed like it was going well and he was destined to become rich and famous for his soon to be successful invention, one of the devices failed by accidentally detonating while a firefighter was carrying someone out of a fire. The firefighter had tethered the safety pull to his kit, which subsequently got caught in something as he was clearing the building, which put the device off "safety" and made it ready to deploy when the spoon/lever was pressed and released.. well as he was carrying the victim, their leg kicked the canister and bashed into the lever, causing the valve to open, creating a cloud of oxygen displacing gas around the firefighter and victim. It knocked the victim out, and almost took out the firefighter, but luckily he heard it going off, and he pulled his mask on.
Some people claim it may have saved the victims life since they were unconscious and not panic breathing smoke for that 30-40 seconds it took to get them out to fresh air, but either way it was enough to ground the invention and prevent it from ever seeing the light of day again.

I have been a Firefighter/EMT for 35 years. I have seen this type of incident many times. I lost a firefighter to this type of accident. This firefighter was saved by the grace of God. It was not his day to go home. I wear a Saint Florian around my neck and have for 33 years. he is the patron saint of firefighters. The Lord is with us as Firefighters and Police Officers everyday. It is not a job for the faint of heart. My brothers and sisters are the Best of the Best. They do what needs to be done and when it needs to be done and never hesitate. God bless you my brothers and sisters and may the Lord be with each and every one of you as he was for Firefighter Nathan Espinosa that day. LAFD is one of the best in the country, along with all other departments in this country.

The Supreme Court can rule whatever they want for Firefighters and Police Officers, they will never take away the spirit of those two organizations. The Police will always serve and protect, and Firefighters will continue to serve and protect Lives first, structures second. Both will give their life if needed to make sure the public is safe every day. They are not in it for the pay they get, they do it because they want to make a difference and to make sure you, the public are safe from harm. God made the Firefighters and the Police Officers. Take them away and you have mass destruction .

I live in Washington state and it is so rainy here that I have been so blessed to never see a fire of that size. We have a occasional housefires, but nothing of that magnitude and I am so emotional to see what people do every day and put their lives on the line to do.

You have to be a very special person to take on the job of a Firefighter 👩🚒 especially when you have a wife and children. My friend recently qualified as a firefighter she a strong personality she recently passed her license to drive the fire truck. What a scary ordeal to go through Angels we’re with you that day. After 33 years of Firefighting, 25 years full-time, never roof ventilated, never been on the roof of a fire involved building, it's not a procedure of my department or other departments in our country - deemed a unsafe practice.

Agreed. We never heard from his Captain though. Makes me wonder if some type of disciplinary action had occurred up to possibly termination with cause. I haven't read or heard anything in regards to that. His AO (apparatus operator? ) may have been in charge while on the roof, but ultimately his Captain is the one who made the decision to go to the roof...assuming the IC was not yet at the scene, because that is what "Truckers" do. I've seen that department (and others) go "all out" to the roof on many commercial structures with similar fire conditions successfully. Unfortunately they were unaware of the building augmentation to the structural members of the roof. I'm curious why we never heard from his Capt.

- I believe it is STILL listed as undetermined origin and still listed as “under investigation” by the LAFD. But I noted a couple suspicious things…(a) how long it took for the alarm to have been raised, it was made by an automatic alarm and not ever called in by people working there and (b). When firefighters arrived they observed people with soot covered faces carrying out arm fulls of clothing materials. Those certain peak my investigators triggers, but beyond that I have not found anything else ( they tend not to give anything out on active investigations). So as far as I can tell, officially it’s being looked at, but it sounds suspicious. However you can never really tell unless you get physical evidence and/or a confession.
Espinosa going thru the roof was determined to have been associated with unsafe building additions that caused the truss he was on to give way under the heat and load I think.

This made me think back to Fire school where our PT instructor always told us that when you’re ready to quit and your mind is telling you you’re done and to give up. You still have 40% left in you to give. That’s exactly what he utilized and to climb up that section of roof he rode down and climb the wall back to safety!
It's a miracle he came out alive from that fire with only hand injury and PTSD the fear of losing your life instills anxiety and fatigue for the rest of your life. God spare Nathan's life for a reason that's what I think.

Buildings that size should have some sprinklers.... When those flames were shooting out of the duck work that means all the ducks inside have already hit the ground and heavy flames are everywhere. It's sad that this young guy didn't get the training he needed to be safe.

It makes absolutely no sense whatsoever to have guys on that roof. Those roof guys are literally right next to a Blow Torch. When they first pulled up it was it was pretty obvious the structure was compromised and is a surround and drown.

They were still searching inside, isn’t that why? So when they hose someone they aren’t burned alive by the steam? There were people still exiting. Hind sight is 20/20. What a tragic event. It amazes me the selfless act you all perform everyday. Yes s there is adrenaline rush, but you still choose to do it day after day.
With that fire in that stage no one should have been on that roof. Buildings in that part of LA are in terrible condition.
If there are guys inside, there will be guys on the roof venting..period. I wasn’t there..but was the building occupied? If not, and it’s already advanced like we see on the video?…maybe outside ops water down the structure..tough one
Fire already ventilated through the roof, in multiple areas. No reason they should have went to the roof. All the footage before the blow out shows flames already on the roof. At that point it’s already a matter of time before more areas open up.
Get off the roof, being up there will not help anything. The force those flames were coming out of the vent went to show that it’s hot and fast under your feet. That speed and heat is not slowly catching things on fire, it’s eating through what it touches.
Really lucky he made it out and I am happy for him.
I would have got up there, sounded it, but seen all the signs and been like nope. This is not the place we need to be. But that’s him being new and trusting the experienced guys he was with. Their senses should have been like let’s go, this is bad.

It's interesting that some of the changes they've made are very similar to what's been fairly standard practice for incident commend here in SFRS for as long as I've been in. For example, we have to put through a tactical mode to Control with every message and we use, or we're supposed to use, the decision-making framework along the lines of aim-plan-actions-effectiveness-review.
Other things are very different. There are no circumstances where you'd have British firefighters on the roof of a burning building. That is just not a tool in our toolboxes at all. I'm an IC and I can't wrap my head around the idea tbh.
I can understand why you think that's a bad idea, but think about it: If your departments attack strategy is primarily interior attacks, venting is a very high priority; Furthermore if you NEED to make a push further into the structure to get to the fire, but the interior heat is unbearable, vertical ventilation can work wonders in make the conditions more tenable for hose line advancement. This all being said, there are alot of arguments against truck guys getting on the roof and it really depends on what your department prioritizes. Personally I see it as another tool in the tool box, but I hear what you're saying.

No kidding the culture is resistant to change. All respect to Nathan, his suffering should be the catalyst for change. In much of the rest of the developed world, nobody would be up on that roof. Certainly not unsupported. Has been that way for decades. Way too much fire in that building to suggest anything but bad news for structural integrity, certainly too much risk to life.
Heavy fire in a bowstring truss should have been a no-go from the jump. Fire was coming out of that vent stack like a blowtorch, that's plenty of ventilation.
